Back to stock - Nandroid - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So I while back, I rooted a co-worker's VZW S3, but then he left, so we never did anything more than that.
When the 4.3 update came out, I emailed him, warning him to not take the update. I recently asked him if he needed me to help him unroot or load the recent 4.3 rom. He opted to unroot, although we haven't gotten a chance to.
Last night, he messaged me, freaking out because his phone said it was song the update at 1am. We msged back and forth, in which I got him to delete SDM.apk and FWupgrade.apk to avoid the update.
Anyway, every guide says to Nandroid before you Odin back to stock. Is this just a "just in case something goes wrong, or you change your mind later," or does Nandroid have a purpose on an unrooted phone with a stock recovery?
I know how to backup other this, like call loss and texts. But can you restore data in user apps with TB when not rooted?

Nandroids have no use without a custom recovery.
Titanium backup won't work without root.

Not sure what guide you are referring to, but doing a nandroid then Odin flashing a stock rom is unnecessary unless you're doing it for troubleshooting purposes. Doing a nandroid serves no real purpose if you return to stock and intend to stay on stock cuz you can not use that nandroid unless rooted with a custom recovery.
No you can not use Titanium Backup or any root app if you are stock, unrooted.
Edit: lol ninja'd, I need to do a ten minute wait rule or something

[Q] Official update while rooted?

Okay I am staring this thread because there are mixed answers in the official update thread and this might give one spot for noobs like me that are not flash addicts a place to find the quick answer.
Here is my setup:I am rooted, running a bone stock JH7 rom, ROM Manager installed, Circle Battery Mod installed, other than that no custom kernels, modems, radios, etc. I do have a couple programs that require root access like ROM Manager, AdFree, and ClockSync. Already installed kies mini and have it all set up per the instructions on samsung's website. Just waiting for the update to go live.
Here are my questions:
1) Do I need to unroot?
2) Do I or should I uninstall any apps that require root access or change the recovery image (ROM Manager/Clockwork Recovery)
3) Should I remove both my external SD and my SIM prior to flashing?
4) What data will I lose and how do I back it up? (I have read that SD cards are left alone just system data like call logs, sms, contacts, email setup, saved passwords are lost) I have Lookout installed so I know my contacts are backed up.
5) Could someone way smarter than me please do a quick write up that is more detailed on the steps needed to complete this update AND keep all your data? I don't mind reinstalling apps (just hope I don't lose all of my angry birds progress )
All of these questions are not address in any of the "official" information other than "you should back up any data you don't want to lose" but gives no steps on how to do it.
Same question here, I'm rooted with TiBU and voodoo lagfix and that's it., well besides deleting all bloatware. Still on eclair jh7. Wish I had done lagfix months ago, but I don't have a computer.
Hey guys, what's this button d....
same here, anyone guys help us out?ill add mine, I also installed OCLF by ryanz, do I need to undo the lagfix? or better to restore factory reset the phone before the update tom? ty, nooobs here >.<

If you have a modded phone the smart thing would be to wait at least a few days before installing the update in case the rollout doesn't go as planned. These are the kind of things AT$T has probably been dreading as far as Froyo is concerned because I'm sure that come tomorrow their customer service lines are gonna be blazing like a CA wildfire due to issues with not completely stock phones and thousands of different configurations causing update glitches. I wouldn't be in such a hurry to update until I see how it goes for the "gotta have it now" sheep taking the first plunge.

Remember OCLF is bad, Mmmkay? Better lagfixes such as Voodoo and ULF
All lag fix should be removed. Otherwise, you will very likely end up with a bricked phone.
You can install Kies Mini now and connect your phone. If your phone is recognized without problem, you're good to go. Kies Mini is your only way to update the firmware.
I can't answer most of your questions, but I will recommend getting Titanium Backup. You can at least backup your app data since you're so concerned about your Angry Birds score. I think you can probably restore that after flash.

Did you copy the TiBU folder to your PC after doing a batch backup of your apps? That's the only way to reliably save a backup.

No. lol. I was going to, then my phone just stopped working in the middle of the day. But ima deff do that when I get home b4 froyo.

Not to be a negative Nancy, I understand some want to stay as close as possible to stock, but I'd just wait for a custom ROM to be built that de-bloats, adds speed, better GPS, etc... Cog 4 has a really stock look, and works really well; check it out. And with time there will only be others that will improve on the great ROM's we already have!

The other smart thing to do would be locate the TiBu backup folder on the external SD card. That way even a brick requiring reformatting the internal sdcard partition can be fully recovered from. Just take out the external card while restoring to stock, then root, get TiBu, point it to the reinserted external sd card, and boom, back in business.

You should use OCLF app to remove the lag fix. Don't do factory reset or flash another ROM. You may brick your phone that way. That's why I don't use any lagfix.

Yes You should be a bone stock when updating. No lagfixes, custom kernel, nothing.

[Q] Nandroid backup tutorial?

hi I rooted my phone yesterday I want to do a nandroid so i can revert to original state if i ever have to return it back to samsung, I seen guides online but didnt want to try them incase something is diferent
It's really quite simple. Open rom manager, scroll down, click backup current rom. Don't touch anything till it reboots.
Oh and restoring a backup of your rooted rom won't revert your phone to being unrooted. If you are going to send it in you may need to unroot and lock your bootloader. I've never sent a phone in so I'm not a 100% though.
Yeah i heard about needing to lockboatloader etc i might just use my free phone insurance from my bank and claim a lost phone. Is this the same for kernals i think i had read something as i want cyanogen mod and kernal so i can get voodoo

which model do you have?
they are all safe

Quick Question

This might be a dumb question but does flashing a Kernel still have the risk of losing IMEI or just when flashing roms?
EDIT: Also if i make a nandroid backup will it replace the stock backup i made?
bump
1. Back up your imei if you decide to root PERIOD.
2 NANDROID BACKUPS wont overwite eachother . Just keep a healthy backup of each rom/kernel setup you use. So you can go back and forth .

Thanks, I do have my IMEI backed up but i was just wondering if there is a risk. Kinda on the edge about flashing more stuff since its working good but wanted to try some kernels.
There's always a risk. From what I've read - losing imei is so random it may or may not ever happen.

This.
If you follow the steps on this thread though (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852255) you should be fine. I lost my IMEI flashing CM10 without a backup, and ended up having to re-inject in using QPST. I was stuck roaming for awhile, but was able to fix it doing this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31028642&postcount=115). Bottom line, you'll probably be fine if you end up losing your IMEI as long as you have a backup.

[Q] Whats the best way to...

Ok so Ive decided to head back to stock. While all this is flashing and what not is fun and maybe invigorating to some, its gotten me worried that my phone is going to explode in my hand or something. I just dont want to cause any problems with my new shiny phone. Can you tell my noob-ness level? lol So Im running CR 2.5 and LiquidSmooth before that. While there is nothing wrong with CR im just too nervous every time I see something unusual.
I have a nandroid BU of Stock with root and unlocked BL and CWM flashed. If I format system, Format data, Format cache and restore that nandroid. Im back to stock ROM and everything with root, correct?
If I choose to unroot, do I have to use ODIN, or is there another way? I pretty much want to go back to getting OTAs but dont want to loose all my Apps. Can I stay rooted, then lock the bootloader and accept OTAs?
Now I also have BUs in TB and MYBackup. If I choose to unroot how do I get my backups restored if Im not rooted?
What are my best options? Suggestions, links are greatly appreciated?
Anybody?

Yes me! So first of all there are the OTA's in the development section I believe. And you can just flash the OTA to your rooted device description is in the forum. Second If you would want to get back to stock non rooted the best way would be to ODIN also don't forget to reset the flash counter if you needed to return the device to verizon or anything.
Also you can find the latest stock rooted in the development section with all OTA's included. I wouldn't un-root if I were you just because of all the good stuff that is possible with root.
And I just want to tell you that your pretty safe your phone won't explode or anything like that. just make sure you follow the instruction correctly and your phone shouldn't over-heat or drain the battery so on. And even if something drain's the battery check the section where you downloaded the ROM from and you will find the solution easy as 1-2-3.
Use the little search button upper corner on the right hand side if you have any questions in the verizon GS3 section of course and you will find everything you need.
If I have a little time later today, I will link you the OTA's and the latest stock-rooted ROM if you can't find it.

bricked my phone
So I am pretty new to the community and have only rooted my phone for use of ARliberator. I recently took the MD3 OTA and the signal was crap, now I get the new update this am MF3 and it bricked my phone with the message "system software not authorized by vzw take to store" blah blah. I tried this using voodoo root keeper with out un-rooting first.
Guessing my only option is to flash back in odin mode or is there some recovery that I can try? I have everything backed up with titanium pro. how would I reload all of that after I flash?

How small ? The previous update that they pulled was just under 130mb as I recall. This one should be very close to the same size unless it's a firmware update only and the "premium suite" will come later.

ODIN back to stock OEM , then take all the updates before rooting again. Make a full backup in recovery before using Titanium Backup to restore. Restoring Apps + data with TB can cause issues.

So after trying about 5 times my phone booted back up and is working. The update did not go through but my phone is working as it was before. I dont know why the recovery wouldnt boot at first unless it was the update blocking it for a few minutes.
Might have made the rookie mistake since I didnt do the temp un-root with voodoo, but I was trying to be innovative and see if it worked with out it like it did with the MD3 OTA.
Thanks for everyones help on here, teaching a noob like me new tricks.

i used rootkeeper and ezrecovery, flashed to stock recovery and then updated
lost root and had to reroot and unlock bootloader again...............just restarted phone
all good now with mf1

I tried just temp unrooting with voodokeeper, downloading and installing the update, and it worked and the phone loaded up phone and I was able to turn root back on with Voodkeeper no problem. I have two S3s, one is a mistake I made in getting a phone for a now ex that was supposed to pay their share of the bill, etc and didn't and I took the phone back. That's the one I experiment stuff with and tried it there with no problems. I'm afraid to do it without ODINing etc though on the phone I always use. The ex's phone never seems to have any problems with updates and re-rooting though.

Glad to hear that method worked for you. I just tried it again and I get to right after it shuts off and get past the Samsung screen with RECOVERY in the top left in blue, to the yellow triangle saying "you have unauthorized VZW software...turn off device and take to store..." with SECURE:KERNEL in red in the top left...i think thats what it says.
Guessing flash method is all that will work for me, owell.
Thanks again.
