I have the opportunity to get a Nexus 5 that was on T-Mobile. Is it possible to activate it on Sprint. I'm not familiar with phones with dual bands therefore I don't know it it has to be an Official Sprint Nexus 5 to be activated on it.......Or, even better, can I flash it to Boost Mobile or is the T-mobile version strictly GSM?
Yes, you can activate the phone on any carrier. You'll need a LTE Sim card from sprint to activate it with them. There's no differences with the phones on any carrier

Thanks for the input, I'm not familiar with the LTE Sim but what would I do about the LTE Sim if I want it on Boost Mobile?

I contacted Boost and they said they don't have LTE Sim cards.....Hmmm.....will it work without one or will a Sprint one work in it while on Boost since its the same network?
Actually sprint may work. I'd ask them first though

My assumption, based on history, is that the Nexus 5 sold by Sprint is SIM locked. Has anyone confirmed this?

If you look at the thread you referred to, no one actually says that they got the phone and it was unlocked. Two people say it is unlocked, but don't state how they know.
Also, I asked about Sprint, that thread is Best Buy.
It comes unlocked. I popped a T-Mobile SIM in and was good to go

As have I. I started a thread before my Nexus from sprint was delivered. Then after I got it I tried a att straight talk sim and it worked without issue

Amazing, that is a first!
Are the sprint, tmobile nexus 5 locked to the networks or are they like the google play store versions
unlocked for any carrier?
Can I take my sprint nexus 5 and put in a ATT sim card?
same goes for the tmobile version.
As below

The box for the one sold through Sprint says it has a sim software lock and can be used on the Sprint network only (I forget exact wording) but there have been plenty of reports of people swapping sims and it working just fine.
I believe that TMOs policy is that any phone it sells is unlocked. The exception is that if you finance the phone through them, it will be locked until the phone is paid off.
tmobiles nexus 5 is completely unlocked, whether you pay in full or payments. same with the nexus 4. at any moment you can insert a sim from another provider and itll work.

LG/Google sells the Nexus 5 as a factory device - regardless of branding, the device is unlocked and available to use. There isn't yet any kind of blocking or locking of the device in this nature.

How can you be sure about this? While it may be true in North America, it may not be true in other parts of the world. People have said the same thing about every Nexus phone since the Nexus One, but evidence has shown that there has been locked versions of every Nexus phone prior to the N5.

Well all above carriers had been north american based carriers, that's what I was referring to. Clearly I can't be sure for every model of the device outside of the U.S.

all nexus devices are always unlocked. and the bootloader is very easy to unlock as well, since google made it as easy as a 3 word code to do(fastboot oem unlock).

perfect! ive played around with a nexus 5 before great phone! just wanted to make sure it was unlocked before i pulled the trigger on it!
I bought the playstore version and am using it with Tmobile. I have issues with connecting to tmobiles LTE. It takes 5-10 minutes to connect and is always switching from lte to h+ to 3g. Tmobile told me it is because it is the playstore version. They also told me Samsung does a better job than LG with their WiFi modem.

Your LTE issue might be a defective, settings or regional issue. I have been a electronics seller and I left the job because I hate telling lies to customers. Whenever I hear of a representative misleading a customer, it reminds me that freasking job
There's a huge chance also that the Representative doesn't know anything about what he is selling/supporting or the tech involved with it. Even on google customer service...
There are only 2 different N5 (D820/ D821) US models are D820. A hardware difference implies a variation on the model # and yours is D820.
i bought the phone and LTE is working like a charm! success!

My brother recently got a tmobile nexus 5 on craigslist, and it turns out it can't be activated on tmobile. My question is could he use the nexus 5 on sprint or does he have to get it carrier unlocked. I've read around and some say that the phone is carrier locked and some say it isn't. Just wanted to get an answer from the reliable xda community.

its not carrier locked, but you might have to get level 2 support for them to add the IMEI to their system.
he cant activate it on tmobile then it must be blacklisted. if its blacklisted, it goes on a national registry. i know att and vetizon are part of the registry, if sprints on it as well then you wont be able to use it on sprint.

This. Not to mention the fact that there is no such thing as a carrier locked Nexus 5. If you want to take a Nexus from one carrier to another, you simply add the IMEI to their system when you activate the new service. If you can't activate it, then the phone must be blacklisted which makes you SOL. All the more reason not to buy a phone off of Craigslist.
you can check if its been blacklisted, for free, here http://swappa.com/esn
Almost positive that the tmobile nexus 5 doesn't have CDMA in the phone. Try an att Sim in the phone. If att and t mobile don't work in there, then nothing will.

there is only 1 version of the nexus 5 and it does have both GSM and CDMA radios.. i did a quick search and it looks like sprint MAY activate your phone if you give them the imei minus the last digit (MEID).

Proof - tell me what you want to see because the 'About Phone' screen shows model Nexus 5 w/ Android Version L. Also, during the update to L previe, Google only proviedes one firmware update for Nexus 5 hammerhead on their preview dl page.

Yes it can be done but there is a different situation here whereby the phone cannot be activated on tmob, presumably because it's blacklisted.

Hi,
I can't find an answer here so i will ask my question.
Is it possible to unlock the network (sim lock) ?
Because if i understand well, root and unlocked the bootloader will not remove the sim lock ?
thanks by advance
As far as I know, the nexus 5 is not sim locked, even if you buy it from your carrier store...

Nexus 5 comes sim unlocked.. I'm on sprint and sprint CDMA fones even when u unlock the sim, will not work on any other gsm network like t mobile or att in the US... But my sprint nexus 5 works even on att or t mobile... So basically to answer ur question just insert any sim and it will connect to that network...

If your n5 is sim locked, its the first ever one that is sim locked because every other n5 here is NOT sim locked.
Put your sim in and test for yourself.
I can confirm that a Nexus 5 bought and activated with Sprint becomes Sim locked. I have tried several different sims with several carriers. It will not read any of them. I'm stuck with no service on my Nexus 5 unless I go back to Sprint which I will not do. Not a big deal to me, just an annoyance. Sprint just has crap for coverage and isn't really much cheaper anymore.
That isn't right because I got my phone through Sprint and it works on American GSM just fine. What exactly is it doing?

No Nexus should be sold locked. It's against policy. Get on Sprints case and make them unlock it FREE
