Hey Everyone,
Been an android user for quite some time and know the system well, but this has me confused.
I rooted the phone the minute it came out of the box.
I recently decided to install Xposed and GravityBox on my Nexus 5, and tweak a few things.
However, after installing it, I noticed that my battery dies much faster. And I mean, incredibly fast. If the phone just sits in my pocket for 3 hours, I'm down to about 40%. I leave my house at around 8, and have to top off my battery by noon.
I know that the issue is not the battery though, because if I go into Xposed and disable gravitybox, my battery lasts for almost 2 days.
I have tried BetterBatteryStats, but it didn't give me any unusual wakelock info. Only the normal powermanagerservice and wlan wakelocks.
In the battery menu, Android OS and Android System would use up a ton of battery with GravityBox on.
All help is greatly appreciated, since I really enjoy the features of GravityBox.. but not so much to have horrible battery life.
Thanks,
Dom

Alright, 2.8.6 installed.
I'll leave it unplugged over night and report back in the morning.
Thank you.
That's really odd. I've seen a few other people who also seem to be having crappy battery life with GB, which hasn't been my experience at all.

Much better than before.. but still not quite as good as without Xposed and GB.
This is me, Xposed and latest GB, stock 4.4.2 ROM. Had to reboot it earlier but it's been off charge since 7:30am. Hardly any use as I'm in work but it's not draining fast at all IMO
Just out of curiosity, are you guys running the stock kernel??? I've been running Gravitybox(and a few other modules) for a pretty good while and I haven't seen the drain you guys are getting. But I run the latest Franco kernel. With a full charge and leaving my phone untouched for 3 hours I get down to 93%. Has anyone looked for wake locks??
I've personally never had any problems with battery life on either my N7 or N5 using GB. Running stock 4.4.2, ElementalX kernel and v2.9.0 of GravityBox. Just to throw a wild suggestion out there and I have no real idea of what kind of impact it might have, or not, but I always have the newest version of busybox installed.

Yes. I stated in the op that I checked for them.
Nothing unusual.
I'm happy now though, it seems to be working on the old version.
But I would really like to find out why the battery is killed so quickly on newer versions. Eventually.. I will want to upgrade to the latest gravity box.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I recently rooted and installed Xposed + GravityBox and I'm having the same issue. Has anyone found a fix for this?
I went to sleep the other night at 30% battery and when I woke up 8 hours later my phone was dead. Before installing GravityBox I would only lose 2-4% overnight...what gives?
I am on stock kernel BTW...which has always treated my battery well...

Are you sure it isn`t caused by one or more apps you installed? Have you installed BetterBatteryStats for montoring app usage/power consumption.

So I have seen a few roms released in the last week, but I keep thinking to myself "When will there be a rom that's targeted to optimize battery?" If one of the awesome devs could come up with something that does just this that would be amazing.

HOW?!?! I get a max of 12 to 13 on heavy usage.
If anyone does do this, I find that I get great battery life now after trying the CDMA/GSM fix (cant find the link).
Might wanna be something to look into for future ROMs. (From what I remember, the glitch shows the phone as looking for GSM networks while it's connected to a CDMA network. I followed the instructions to correct this and it's had a positive impact on my battery life. Getting near double the life now).
You guys are on 3G aren't you? I don't even get 2 hours on 4G with medium heavy usage.

8-14 on moderate use to heavy is all you are going to be getting. I doubt you'll see a rom aimed only at battery life. Find a rom with sense removed (there are a few of them) or asop and further remove junk you don't use especially the social network **** and enjoy.

You really don't even need an app from the market like the guy suggests in that thread. If you just dial *#*#INFO#*#*, then go to Phone Information, then scroll down to 'Set preferred network type' and select CDMA auto (prl) from the list.

what software is that use to show the CPU and Battery usage.
Thanks
Actually that CDMA/GSM fix, can it be applied through a rom? I'm pretty sure that's a built in phone setting where you have to dial through the keypad. Regardless, think of it this way. Processors and memory run off of voltage. The more it's in use the more power it will take. Now undervolting and underclocking the CPU is an obvious fix but also the memkiller settings. The more memory that is in use the more power is being taken up. This is why AOSP has better battery life than Sense under the same circumstances. With a more aggressive memkiller you can further increase battery life. I am going to build aggressive settings in my next release of my rom but for custom settings you can always get Autokill from the Market, assuming your phone is rooted of course.
I'm getting FANTASTIC battery life on the latest Fresh ROM.

Has setcpu been updated with native evo support, or are people still rocking N1 settings?
You get OC Widget by searching "overclock widget" in the Market. However, I don't see the need for it since the EVO automatically scales the CPU clock, and we can't overclock.

I guess i should have tried spelling out overclock instead of OC (DUH).. lol, and i have heard that, and have no doubt that it is true, but some people are claiming it has given them some improvement in battery life... Maybe its just a placebo effect, but i am gonna run a few tests and see what i can come up with....
I read a post on another forum from a guy that sounded like he REALLY knew what he was talking about and said the same thing you did but with some pretty big words and tech talk to back it up. But hey.. its free, and i like trying new stuff... even if its so i can see it for myself that it doesnt do anything.
Am I the only one that realizes overclock widget and setcpu don't work on our phones? I have tried both on 3 different ROMs and checked through a adb shell the cpu usage while the phone was asleep and neither one works no matter what I set the programs to.

I have the same configuration, Skype used to eat most of my battery and I think this is because Skype haven't update their app yet. I don't use maps or location services, but I noticed that google location service is always on, I forced closed it ( it gets back sometimes) Anyway, after closing skype my battery performance is ok. I used to lose 10%/ hour even if the phone was idle, after these mods I think I lost less than 5% in three idle hours.
Most of the custom ROMs and kernels are rubbish, aren't they? I mean if people really knew what they were doing, they'd work together with kalimochoAz on the official source. Or at least port it back upstream once they've got it working...

I have done some research into the Android OS draining the majority of the battery and didn't really find anything with the SGS4G, however found the issue in the Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy SL i9003, Galaxy Note GT-N7000, and the Samsung Infuse 4G forums, and I am sure there is probably more..
Out of all those forums this is the only one that seemed like it could have a solution linking it to:
1. Google backup transport
2. Organizer widget

My only problem, I have neither of those on my phone.
I was hoping that maybe somebody here could help me diagnose the issue. For the longest time I just have thought my battery is getting old and isn't holding a charge as long, or I just use my phone too much. However after watching my Battery Usage over the past couple days makes me wonder if there isn't another issue here.
I am currently running RaverX3X's amazing Valhalla BlackEdition Final with the Booster and FBis251's bhundven's SMS KJ6 v0.2.0 Kernel. I also have installed the BraviaHack and am using the KG4 Modem. I am able to post logs or anything that can possible help. I have used thomas.raines 1-Clink Gremlin Remover following each step to the "T" with no luck of fixing the issue.
I have attached more Battery Usage Stats as well in case they might help.

Thanks guys, I have pretty much resolved the issue as I have switched Kernels and am no longer experiencing huge battery loss from anything other then the Display which is just plain normal. I still plan to update over to FBis251's version of ValhallaBlack as I have been keeping an eye on it, and debating when to make the switch.
[On a side note] I'm still not hundred percent sure why the Kernel was giving me this issue to begin with. If I had more experience with Android development debugging I'd love to dig deeper into this issue. However though since it doesn't seem to be a huge issue among other users in the SGS4G forums, and it is easily fixed by using another Kernel I don't really see the need.
Thanks again FBis251, and m0bstr.
Problems with Android OS with Gingerbread and Froyo
I have now encountered battery drainage problems on two different Samsung phones. For a long time my Samsung Captivate ATT running Froyo 2.2 was killing my battery. I was about to buy a new phone. I touched base with Samsung and decided to back up my phone and do the factory wipe.
After the reset and the loss of my apps, the phone seems to be working ok. Even a battery which constantly appeared to be dead, is now working fine and holding a charge.
Today another phone the Samsung Glide ATT running Gingerbread seems to have caught the problem and Android OS is using 25% of the the battery. This is ridiculous.
Normally, about 75% is for display and OS doesn't even show up.
Another person at work had an Android exhibiting similar problems today. This problem seems to be pretty widespread if I know three people with this problem. Feedback appreciated.
Maybe "One Power Guard" can help you downloaded from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889740

Which ROM, and is it overclocked?
Also it would be helpful get a screenshot of YOUR battery screen, you said that the one you posted is not yours, but it is similar..
There is a reason I asked for that, I will be able to help a little more with YOUR battery screen, it will help figure out what is eating the battery on YOUR phone.

Turn of Wifi unless you are using it, as well as bluetooth. Both of these will actively scan for connections while you have them enabled. Also, turn off Automatic Brightness in settings/display, and see if that helps...
Looks like you are running SCv5 or v6, and you shouldn't be having any out of control battery consumption issues with this rom.

I see that you have lost 33% of your battery in a very short time. That is an issue.
Ok two things that I can think of right off.
Which ROM is this that you are running?
How long have you been running this ROM?
Sometimes the battery stats can be off until you get SEVERAL full charges and full drains on the battery after a flash.
Also you try and reset your battery stats.
Try using this app from the market:

scv6 has much better battery life. you can just get another launcher from the market. I use launcherpro. lithium is pretty good too, but the battery doesn't even compare
I would suggest going to the market and installing bad ass battery monitor and run it for 24-48 hours. Its helped me track down battery drain before. Also better battery stats here on xda is excellent for tracking wakelocks. If you don't know what a wakelock is then please Google it.

yes. I know it's confusing because there is launcherpro and launcherpro plus. all the plus adds is the ability to change widget sizes. I have always been on free and it is great.

just install launcherpro then the next time you hit home it will ask you which one you want to use. you will have to re setup all your icons and stuff, but that is the case with any new launcher
I've been on SCv5 and now SCv6 for a while now, and I have both Holo Launcher and ADW Launcher EX installed on mine, in addition to Go Launcher...I switch 'em back and forth fairly frequently. (ADW is my current favorite) Like he said above, once you install a new launcher, it will ask you the next time you press Home which one to use, and you can pick a default. I always get the launcher set up and use it for a day or two without setting a default, just to make it easier to revert. If you find that annoying (which I do if I'm going to be working on my phone a lot) then you can download Home Switcher from the marketplace. It's free, and it works well. For some reason on my phone I had problems with FCs with the normal version, so I installed the "for Froyo" version, and haven't had any problems. This lets you switch back and forth really easily.
+1 ADW Launcher w/y0rk's white, black, or blue themes!

Battery
I Found Today Phone Started Acting Really Sluggish & Freezing
It was a little laggy after the update and ran a little hot. Booted into recovery and wiped cache. Worked fine after. Can't tell how battery is performing yet
Why won't mine install. Keeps saying it gets interrupted.
I'm not having any problems really. The only thing that's really bugging me is that SELinux can't be switched to Permissive on Lollipop. Also, the battery life isn't so great compared to Goldfiner v9 on Safestrap. It's feasible though. That's really all I can say since I've only had it for a few hours.

Battery Life and Performance
My phone has been faster than normal, all the transitions are smooth, haven't had any errors, and all my apps seem to load quicker now. Battery Life is a little better not to much but I have some Heavy Usage at time but it is still running good. Some of the old bloatware was removed but you can disable most of the bloatware you don't want. Reset your phone before you update though as it will help with better performance.
Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? Not rooted.

Weird ... my phone performs better and its much colder comparing to any kit kat build. In antutu i get 32K+ , while on KK i was getting always below 29K. Battery Life is significantly better and in a few days a can give you the exact numbers.
I'm running the stock rooted OC3.
Please Post RAM Status

Well that acutally depends on the number of installed apps and homescreen elements also seem to drain ram. Take a look on my results:
why won't my update install? Not rooted
My phone seems to be a lot faster and not as much of a drain on battery, but it seems to charge MUCH slower now for some reason.

The upside is that slower charging is better for the battery.
