Ok so the wifey bought me a the Galaxy Gear Watch after the sales rep told her it was compatible with the S3. I researched and sure enough it is now compatible, however I use a custom ROM, specifically CyanogenMod. I am not sure if the watch is compatible with custom rom's.. Does anyone have one paired with their S3 running a custom ROM?
Thanks

I believe the S3 is fully compatible with gear with 4.3 rom. If you're running custom rom try this apk version ( http://www.mediafire.com/download/ibwt5qjpak335d5/com.samsung.android.app.watchmanager-1.apk) and cross your finger, if not you have to modify your gear with custom rom in order to make it works..

Just today, somebody has posted that ROMs complied in S4 devices are not compatible with S3 Devices. I'm getting my phone tonight. As I'm from SG, it would be an S3 device. I'd like to know which ROMs in the Dev Section are fully compatible with S3 devices.
Thanks.
I have the S3 device too.. singapore too... cheers mate! Problem is.. i dont think there are any.. and i so far as i know.. i cant root the darn thing either...
I am on S3 as well.
Looking forward to an answer to this question.
Have you guys tried some of the existing S4 roms and tested, or you just heard that they are probably not compatible?
I believe the S4 ROMs will work on the S3 versions. The only thing i can imagine going wrong is the boot.img files.
These contain the kernel and im positive that you cannot use an S4 Kernel on an S3 chip and vice versa.
The rest should be fine, all the htc files / framework will all be the same, Its the exact System as it will be on the S3 - SoC
We need some one with some linux experience to dissect boot.img's for both versions and compare them. This should give us an insight as to why CWM and Superboot wont flash on the S3 version.
Just was looking for a quick answer I haven't been able to find. I just upgraded to the Telus variant of the S3 (i747m) and have rooted and installed TWRP. I just wanted to clear one thing up. When I was using my S2 (t989-d) It was ok for me to use a t989 rom despite using the Canadian variant. I was wondering when looking for a rom which ones would be compatible? I noticed the AT&T variant is i747 and I wanted to make sure I asked before destroying my phone.
I appreciate any answers, thanks.
The phone i am looking to get is called the samsung galaxy appeal in USA, or the samsung galaxy ace q in canada.
the main draw to this phone is its design - a real slide out keyboard.
but im just confused as far as which directions for rooting i would follow? I cant find any directions specific to that phone model, only the "samsung galaxy ace" but that and the phone I want are quite different. the model number for mine is sgh-i827D, if that helps.
My plan was to play around with it and put the latest (stable/recommended) version of android onto the phone before adding any personal touches. I know its operating system is older now but i really do enjoy the physical style of the phone itself.
Any advice would be great, thanks!
If it helps, once i root, as far as i know the only thing id want to do is upgrade the android version.

Latest official Rom--> NOT AVAIABLE (or may be i'm dumb)
But i thought that was the point of rooting, so that way technically every rom is available to every phone?
Ive seen people say they got their regular ace running version 4.4

Ace on 4.4 is possible but not recommended as its just a bit too slow for KitKat. The point is that custom roms are communtity made and if there is no community, bacause of neraly no one owns the phone you have, there will be no custom roms.
I was not even able to find the stock rom for i927D provided b samsung on the internet. I would always inform myself about the abilities to mod a device before buying it.

So has anyone gotten their Gear 2 to work with a Samsung phone running an AOSP ROM? I'm currently running Hyperdrive on my Verizon S4 (MDK bootloader), but really miss AOSP. I saw this thread...

...and wondered if this would be the process to follow, but without renaming the device in the build prop. Any insight would be appreciated!
Hallo there!
I used to root my phones for making them faster and more customizable.
Today my S4 arrived and I was going to root it and install a smooth running Marshmallow ROM but learned the Gear S3 and its according App doesn't like rooted phones. After some research with loads of unnecessary information, I could break it down to these questions:
1) Is it in the meantime possible to have a custom ROM like CM13 with full functionality like answering calls on the Gear? Samsung Pay is not necessary, as it's not available in my country...
=> I guess the answer is "no", as the manufacturer has to be spoofed when installing a custom ROM. Correct?
2) Is it at least possible to install a de-bloated version of the official ROM without getting this "unauthorized modification"-errors?
3) Will applying the CF-Auto Root destroy the 100% compatibility, as it seems to be the "closet to stock"-method to get it at least a little cleaner?
4) Are there any other tricks to de-bloat the S4 without affecting the compatibility to the Gear S3?
(5. Wouldn't the topic of rooted phone with Gear S3 a nice candidate for a sticky?)
Many thanks for your help in advance! :good:

I can tell you gear s3 won't work with Cyanogenmod or Lineage, I tried it myself.
2) Is it at least possible to install a de-bloated version of the official ROM without getting this "unauthorized modification"-errors?
I have a custom rom on my s6 edge plus, as long as it is a stock based rom you won't have any problems and everything will work great.
3) Will applying the CF-Auto Root destroy the 100% compatibility, as it seems to be the "closet to stock"-method to get it at least a little cleaner?
I don't think it will destroy is, I used magisk to root and my compatibility is still 100%
4) Are there any other tricks to de-bloat the S4 without affecting the compatibility to the Gear S3?
if you root the phone, download root uninstaller. This way you can deinstall every app possible, just let everything on your rom you need for gear app.
(5. Wouldn't the topic of rooted phone with Gear S3 a nice candidate for a sticky?)
yeah it would be a good sticky for questions
I hope this helps, all answers are from my own experience using a Samsung S6 edge Plus with a gear s3 frontier.
