I rooted my Verizon Galaxy S3 in desperation to enable wifi tethering, using the saferoot root method.
after finding out FoxFi patch was availiable, I don't have to root the phone.
Is there way to unroot ?
Thanks in advance.

Kind of strange that you don't like root...To remove root just open up the supersu app and in settings/preference of the app there is an option to remove root and uninstall the app.

The biggest one is Titanium backup which can backup all your system apps and user apps and can be store to any android device or when you need to perform a factory reset which save you a lot of time to re setup your stuff. Second, you can side load app like Adobe flash, Ad blocker etc...Third, you don't have to wait for foxfi to update, you just side load the rooted tethering app and done, or you can remove or freeze bload ware apps to keep you phone running faster....just named a few...

thank you for the info.
i used to use titanium backup...but nowadays...i just find myself not using it as much..i guess cloud backups like dropbox and google drive may have affected me a bit.
but thank you for showing me the other aspects.
i do have a one more question on the phone...
how to i lock it up again from custom (unlock)?
i haven't done much for rooting and unrooting with the galaxy s3...

Once you flashed the 4.3 successfully, you're locked. The unlock (custom lock) display is a bug with the s3, you can just ignore this. My wife first phone is using a pure 100% stock and it shown as custom (with the unlock lock icon) and she had a gps issue with the phone and exchanged for a second one and this one also shown custom. Verizon knew this too, that's why they exchange another one without issue. You can tell if your phone has being alter by boot into download mode and you should see the legit status Also you could do a search and should find this is very common on the S3.
Are you saying that the root on a 4.3 updated Phone is un-doable?

Now why you think that's what I said? yes you can unroot the 4.3 updated phone. You can uninstall the supersu or reflash 4.3.

ya, unroot is possible. it's just that custom unlock show up in the booting sequence...not a big deal..
but unrooting works.

Yes, you need root access and "Titanium Backup" is a great app for these purposes.

Its the same as you modified the system by uninstalling stock apps. You will have to flash the stock firmware via ODIN before you want to sell it as "stock" in ANY case...
Here you wil find rooting instructions. Make sure to READ and UNDERSTAND everything before you modify your device

by all means, if you're traveling to Canada then update away haha
Lmao wow. That's the most pitiful update ever. Seriously, couldn't they have waited until there was something more substantial and then included Canadian roaming in THAT update. As always though, Verizon is dumber than a bag of hammers...

Hey guys, I have a question about this update,
My friend has the S3 for whom I safe- rooted, debloated and whatnot. Now that this update came, my friend tried to update but to no avail. She is adamant about the fact that Verizon definitely has something important hidden in the update, despite me trying to tell her otherwise, and figured that she couldn't install the update because she was rooted.
Naturally, I fully unroot her entire phone, uninstall root-only apps, and try the update, but it doesn't work. When the phone reboots for installation, the installation bar loads for a bit, hangs, then just says "error" and does not update.
Anyone know what the problem could be? Normally I wouldn't care so much, but if Android 4.4 is actually coming to the S3 then I don't want her not to have it, and I can already tell it's not going to work if this update doesn't either.
Thank you so much in advance.

Some of the bloatware you removed likely had to be present on the phone in order for the update to take place. Unless you are sure someone is never going to go back to stock without flashing an ODIN tar image and wiping their phone clean, best to just freeze bloatware with Titanium Backup. That way you can just unfreeze it in order to go back to full stock. Unless you have a list of the bloatware you removed and can somehow sideload them back in, you will unfortunately have to flash her phone to full stock VRUCML1 and wipe it clean.

Ah, I see, next time I'm around her I'll re-root it and backup all her stuff with titanium backup, flash the VRUCML1 and factory reset, then restore everything and see if it works.
Strangely enough, when the same update for my Verizon Note 2 came out, I was able to update while rooted even though I unsinatalled theexact same system apps I did on her phone. How strange.
Nonetheless, thank you so much.
I have a question for you all. I took the OTA update for 4.3 when it came out but after that I rooted my gs3 Verizon phone again successfully. Now I also took this last update and now lost root on my phone. I tried to reroot the phone but it fails now. There error I get on safestrap is something about the addresses not being able to be found. Can anyone help me reroot my phone so my apps like titanium will work again?
Thanks

I did the same rooting it with Towelroot, yet quite a few things are blocked off for some reason from supersu access.
I can't use titanium backup nor root explorer with root privileges.
The camera shutter sound doesn't work like the old huawei phones. Apparently, when you snap a photo, the phone turns the volume up to maximum volume, so silent mode nor using apps to turn off the shutter sound doesn't work. I had to manually delete the shutter sound file. Replacing the file wasn't possible as well.
There is a way to go into recovery, but doesn't do much.

Edit:
After reinstall SuperSu and BusyBox, I instaled Titanium Backup 2.1.5.6 free version (Play Store) and backup work!
Edit 2:
Atention!!!
I used the backup folder of SD ext. After I backup all applications and restart gave were deleted data !!! I have not found any backup !!! Titanium Backup not work!
I am using supersu with towelroot though.
Can I root again with RootGenius? Would that break anything?

I was going to use the SuperSu to do the Full unroot. If I did that, then installed the current Verizon OTA, could I then re-root using pingpong? Or does this OTA disable the ability to root again? I've read so many posts and articles from various sources, some say yes, some say no. The more I dig the more conflicting info I find.
The only reason I rooted in the first place was to swap out the mixer_paths.xml file. I'm curious if the OTA will wipe that moded file out. But that's probably another discussion.
Thanks
I rooted first and a day later took ota. After ota pingpong root just needed to "download data" or whatever then root worked fine.

I think what you are talking about is you were rooted and tried to take the Ota and it wouldn't install correct? If that's the case, yeah you have to unroot or Odin the new version then reboot.

That did the trick! Thanks so much. It worked just like it should have. Afterwards I did have to rerun pingpong, but that took about 2 seconds and I'm back to normal now with the update. Thanks a million!
I did that, as I usually do when I sell my phones.... It bricked it and I could reinstall stock.
Unrooting options
To summarize the unrooting options:
1. Unroot with SuperSu - By some reports this method does not work
2. Odin stock rom - Wipes the device and data, ?trips knox?
3. Use the Verizon Update Utility - Upgrades the devices to latest OTA
I am on 5.02 Stock (AOC3), rooted, Knox not tripped.
I am really not interested in wiping my device or updating to the latest OTA.
What I want to do is *temporarily* unroot to see if I can get Android Pay working again.
Has anyone had any luck with method 1 above? If android pay and your credit cards are activated/verified while unrooted, can you then re-root and still have Android Pay work?
I really miss using Android Pay... but not enough to lose root!!!
If you go into the superuser app and click the enable superuser to turn it off you can activate a card with android pay. You won't lose root this way.
I did that with my bank card and once my card was listed in Android pay I reenabled superuser and everything works fine.
I'm also using root cloaker but I don't know if it's needed.

Awesome!!! That was too easy.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
@dobosininja
Is your android pay still working? I was able to use Android pay for only a short period ~1 day. Now I get the message "This card cannot be used right now" It doesn't matter what card I use or whether SuperSU is enabled. Maybe it is detecting SuperSU itself.
What app / procedure did you use for cloaking? Did it trip your knox?
Thanks!

My knox is not tripped since I rooted with ping pong that didn't trip it.

If I'm correct, the Token needs to refresh from time to time. It may be that that process is detecting the root.
I'd try the Root Cloak he mentioned.

With TI you can freeze System Update 1.0 to stop OTA from loading. You might need to remove the update file if you already have it to stop the notice.

Go to system/app. Go to SDM and rename the apk inside to SDM.apk.bak.

My S6 is on AOC3, stock and unrooted. How can I disable/block it from taking the OTA?

You need to be root to do that, not aware of an unrooted option.

Will this permanently (at least until one changes it back to "SDM.apk") prevent my S6 from automatically downloading and installing the OF1 update?
EDIT: I just tried this and it said "task failed"

Never heard of that. You rooted? Is your explorer a root explorer?

Not rooted yet. Does that renaming process only work if you are rooted?

Yes. No system file can be messed with without root.

Gotcha. I am gonna root just not for a few days til I get some time.
If I "No thanks" the OTA for the time being it's not going to download and install behind my back is it?

I had a bad experience with a s4 I had once where it jumped on without my giving it the okay. What firmware are you on? It doesn't take but a couple of minutes to root.

OC3. I know but I use my phone a LOT for work and need tethering to work more than anything else and already have foxfi working alright while being without root which is good enough for the time being......not sure how to set it (tethering) up once I am rooted without digging into XDA some more to find out.
Plus I have to set up all my apps again coming from my S3, and settings and such.

That's cool. Need time for that. OC3 roots the easiest but OE2 is easy too. Just one more step.
Here is what you need to get native tethering to work when you are ready.

If you're rooted just delete update.zip from /cache/fota/
And/Or
you could try on unrooted/rooted devices going to Settings>application manager>all>Google play services and untick "Show Notifications"

Should I take the OTA to OE2 first before root? Just worried it'll OTA straight to OF1 and skip OE2 then I'd be screwed. (Actually started a thread on that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/veri...o-of1-t3176197)

Have you ever used odin? You could update manually. Or use smartswitch. I always use custom roms myself. Most of those have tethering enabled built in.

I've never used SmartSwitch before. Have used Odin a few times in the past but definitely wouldn't call myself "savvy" with it. On your link whats the difference between "Stock OE2 Tar" and "OE2 Retail Firmware" ?
The entire rooting process on the S6 freaks me out more than than the S3 simply because the battery is sealed and can't pull it if I need to....

The firmware one is like an update. I've never used smartswitch but it is supposed to be a safe way to update. There is kies too.
Rooting the S6 is simple and safe in my opinion. Ping-pong is a snap. No need for a computer. Instead of pulling the battery, you can always go into maintenance mode to reboot or turn off your phone. Just like going into download mode (except your phone is still on) you hold the volume down-home-power buttons for about ten seconds and let go. Gunthermic has a rooted rom that is stock deodexed that is really nice. Misterxtc has an OC3 and OE2 roms. You need to install flashfire. That is our only way to flash roms or mods. It works great (also does backups).
