My Nexus 5 gets hot - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all!
Today ive noticed that my nexus 5 gets really hot while playing graphic intense games such as real racing 3 or asphalt 8.
I downloaded an app which shows the cpu temperature and while playing it was 75-76°C...
While charging it can go up to 79°C but i have a spigen ultra hybrid case on the phone at all times.
I am a bit worried. Are these temps okay during games?
While browsing with chrome the phone gets a bit warm, the app shows 49-50°C but while its on charger it can go up to 55-56°C.
Is it normal?
Is it okay how it behaves?

its normal.
when playing intensive games it will get hot, especially in a case. and 50C while browsing is normal as well. the phone doesnt have a fan to actively cool itself down, like a laptop, so it relies on a passive cooling system, transfer of heat. the case will slow that cooling down a bit.

Thank you very much for the answer!

Wow my nexus 5 never goes above 45 degrees whatever I'm doing whether that be playing graphic intensive games, web browsing, you name it. These temperatures would be considered abnormal to me..

are you checking battery temp or cpu temp? if you are talking cpu temp, it surely will go way over "45 degrees" when doing anything intensive. and if you are still denying that cpu temp goes over "45 degrees", then you just dont know whats going on with your device or are just in denial. enabling your phone for ART, rebooting, then letting it build ART will take your phones cpu temp over "45 degrees".

We were talking about cpu temps, NOT battery temps. My battery temp is max 45-46°C too...

then your cpu temp monitor is not "live" and very inaccurate. get a live cpu temp monitor, with a live notification in your status bar, then watch the cpu temp go up, live, as you are playing an intensive game.
---------- Post added at 02:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:25 PM ----------
so you are saying that your cpu and battery temp maxes at the same place? lmao! a. theres something wrong with your phones temp sensors, or b. the app that you are using to check cpu temp is very inaccurate. with use, its NORMAL for the cpu temp to go above 50C, above 60C, and sometimes above 70C. thats normal and expected.

hot, warm, melting.. its all relative. hot nor cold describe a temperature, they are describing how it feels to their hands. if you hand is cooler, the phone will feel hotter, if your hand is warmer then the phone will feel cooler.
try this.. grab 3 cups of water, one hot, one cold, and one room temp. stick one hand in the hot water, and one in the cold water for about a mijnute. then stick them both in the room temp water together. the hand that was in the hot water will feel that the room temp water is cool. the hand that was in the cold water will feel that the room temp water is warm. both hands are in the same water, but they will feel it differently.

Now I tried without a case and while NOT charging and i had 75C cpu temp after 10-15 minutes of gaming.
Is it still okay?

i play games and stream movies, reaching those temps can be very normal. i even push my device to the limit occasionally(nearly daily :angel, the limit being 100C. 100C is the safety shutdown temp, once you hit it the device will automatically reboot or power off to cool off. if you are below that temp, you are alright. imagine, a quad core device, with a 2.3ghz cpu speed, and an awesome gpu, it will get hot when being pushed
it can also be that the game isnt very optimized for the nexus 5.

im a 311K, bought it the day tmobile released it. everyone i know with a nexus 5, many, and online, all have nexus 5 that get hot when pushed, regardless of what rom or kernel they are running, or when they bought it. this heat "issue" was around the nexus 4 as well, for months after its release. it also is a quad core, that gets hot when pushed.

What kind of heat can the g2x take?

I'm trying to set up a profile for setcpu. What would be a good limit for heat on the g2x before it overheats?
I say anything above 110°-115° I live in phoenix az that's under stating for most places though lol
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Honestly 110 is kind of low. When I had a g2x (during winter) I never saw over 108, but my other phone has been as high as 127 while playing a CPU intense game plugged in in the middle of summer. Shoot, I know all that's measured on a phone is battery temp, but on a laptop 140 processor temp is perfectly acceptable.

My profile is set for 45 degrees C which I do hit on occasion but I am a little paranoid about battery damage so I keep it low.

Tegra does not thermal throttle itself until about 70°C IIRC
now, letting it get that high on a regular basis is not the best thing for the cpu or the battery.
If your gonna set a profile, I'd recommend 60°C
my phone used to hit that every day when i was doing some hardcore multitasking.

That is a omg my phone is 1337 haxxor pwning multitask your mom and my mom fast. Running any electronics at or close to their maximum heat/mv limits for prolonged periods of time will cause your phone to live fast and die young
Side note: My 3500mah and 1900mah batteries maximum temp is 50°c and when using them I adjust my setcpu profile accordingly although they tend to run cooler anyways...

Agreed, that just sounds like asking for all the cheap glue and poor solder job to fall apart. I wouldn't get that close if I notice my battery is any where near 120° I take the battery out and let it cool down...

When I first got my g2x I went through 2 lemons with bad hardware before the one I use now.
Even being counter active and setting your temp limit a little lower and then setting the profile Max CPU frequency a little higher may be a good idea you get a audible warning when you hit your temp limit (in setcpu) so might as well take advantage
Pin it to Win it.

That's cpu temp, allot of that dissipates by the time it gets to the battery. Yeah, running hot causes the life of electronics to shorten, but I'm not keeping this phone for more than 2 years at most, and batteries are cheap
Like i said, tegra is alright till 70, i get nervous around 60-65 your battery temps should not be any higher than about 50-60 (but that's just a guess)
I'd your setting up an emergency overheating profile I'd still recommend 60° but if you're hitting that too much you might want to tone down the oc in general
Don't worry about the solder tho, that won't melt till around 100° or higher
Note: all temps in °C
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk 2
While Tegra is alright up to 70°C, I get skittish when I am required at some places to leave my cell phone in the car, which (in Houston) can get up to 60-65°C inside when parked in full sun. I personally recommend keeping it below 50°C as much as possible.

Battery Temperature problem

I've been having some problems with my battery temperature...
Usually when I'm not using my phone the temperature stays around 27C. But when I use a small app like messaging for a minute or so it shoots up to about 35C or more.
Another thing is that when I keep my phone for charging it's temperature rises upto 55C or more. Once it went to 60C.
Is this normal or is my battery faulty?
Btw for the battery stats I use Minimalist Text.
I'm on the MIUI ROM by TheFrankenstain. Overclocked to 1.2ghz.
Any input will be helpful. Thanks.

My battery goes up to 55 degrees during charge .. That and the other temperature's are fine.. But touching 60 is abnormal..
Heavy usage during charge is not recommended, and specially with overclock will screw up ur device..

When your phone is not in use and not charging: around 33C and below is completely normal.
When your phone is in charge but not in use: around 40C and below is normal.
When your phone is in use but not charging: then 40C and below is normal depending on what you're running. it may go up to 45C depending on your kernel and max CPU frequency and also how heavily an app consumes resources e.g high graphic games (it also depends on the weather ).
In Summary: 35C and below is completely normal when NOT in use, 45C and below is normal when in use, 50C+ is quiet dangerous in any condition especially when not in use, 60C + Immediately stop using your phone and you'll wanna head to the freezer fast and change your battery or phone.
Always remember: NEVER use you phone while charging.
Ok thanks for the replies... I'll keep the things in mind.

Actually it got automatically Overclocked when I flashed the MIUI ROM. Any Overclocking app was not installed, so I installed setcpu to make profiles for charging. But problems started to occur after that. So I uninstalled it and those problems disappeared. Well I checked with an app. It remains on 1.2ghz only 14%.
Maybe the temperature is due to the summer. 33C outside.
Anyways I've come up with my own way to keep my phone cool. I place it on a wet cloth. And that does help.

Ok. But i don't keep the cloth that much wet. Anyways it was due to the overclocking. I flashed the stock rom back and everything was back to normal. Except one little thing. Well that thing needs another thread. I'll not discuss it here.
I'm having the same problem. Just this morning, I was charging my phone and left it under my pillow. I wasn't even using it and when I came back to check my emails it was hella hot! My phone usually gets hot when I'm using it heavily and even more when I'm charging + playing games but this morning was different. I almost thought it's dead lol. [Q] Is it normal for Nexus S to get hot in Hot Temperatures??

The temperature in my city is around 40°C.. But real-feel is around 42°C...Summer has just started and my phone is getting hotter than usual... However, the phone is not so hot in idle mode... Its around 31-33°C.. However, after playing few games or browsing for around 20-25 mins, my nexus s is getting hotter and hotter.. I can feel it in my hands... But still, the battery temp is showing 36-37°C only... I've never even seen 38°C on my phone... But still, I can feel the touchscreen is getting very very hot...
After opening the back cover, I began examining myself.. I noted:
The battery is not that hot
The sim area is very hot (I even started my phone without the SIM card, but same result)
The area beneath the camera and flash is also too hot..
The touchscreen itself is getting v.v hottttt.... I cannot play touch games anymore... However, the lower part of the touchscreen is absolutely normal...
When charging, the temperature doesn't goes more than 35°C... However, I can feel the back side is warmer...
2months ago, when the temp was around 30-32°C, I've never had this problem Everything was fine and running perfectly... Still now, everything runs smoothly without lags
I've never heard that touchscreen is hott... I've had many phones and my city's temp remains mild mostly... So, what could be the problem?
I am using:
Carbon unofficial
Marmite 8.5cm_bigmen
No over/under clocking
Vooodoo sound with +5db (Hardware highest)
Ondemand with cfq
Battery timings: 1.5day with normal use (4-5hrs of screen time)
1day with heavy use (6-7hrs of screen time)
Should I revert back to stock ROM?
Is there any IC problem?
Battery problem?
Processor problem?
Or is it normal for the phone to get hot in hot temperatures (42°C)???
Should I see a doctor?

Its normal dude. If you want to keep it cooler than don't keep the brightness too high.
One thing that can REALLY heat up my phone is playing games at 100% brightness on a hot day so try to avoid that.

And yes, it also gets hot in the processor area, not the battery.

Now, my phone is getting very hot while playing Asphalt 6 or even Fruit Ninja... Only the processor side (Top portion of touchscreen and its back portion) is getting hot... Battery is definitely cool (Not more than 38degree)...
What could be the problem? My processor has gone mad or what? I've even tried undervolting as well as processing speed to 800Mhz max... But overheating remains
My phone gets hot only when I'm on full brightness and a game I usually put it at half brightness and it never happens even when playing mc4

This is absolutely true. I have Nexus S since 4 months... There was no problem at all then.. everything normal and running fine and never overheated at all no matter what i play...
This overheating problem started few days back when I tested overclocking and overvolting NS
Seem's this is the problem..
I think I have roasted the processor and it will always remain like that.. I will have to sell it soon now

is it still over heating on half brightness?
It is... I am on 3% brightness...
Should I give a try to a new OEM battery?
Will it resolve the overheat issue?
Why is the processor heating up too quickly? Has I finished its life by overcloking it? Or it is a battery issue?

I went to the local market for some inspection of my phone. The person said that your phone is not giving maximum current and the charging ic is getting very hot and has to be changed... How is this possible? I've never had any problem with my phone like this... 100% charging was always OK for me

[Q] Nexus 5 gets hot

Hey guys, Im new to XDA but i have a quick question for all nexus 5 owners. Okay i was just wondering if anyone else's Nexus 5 gets hot. I remember my nexus 4 would get so hot i couldn't touch it. I haven't had that kind of heat from my nexus 5, but it is there and i do notice it. It gets hot near the camera on the back, and it gets hot on the front at the top of the screen. I have a CPU temp monitor running on my device to check if my device is running to warm. I found it averages/hovers around 50 degrees celsius. When i open chrome and do some light browsing it goes up to 60 degrees. So my question is.. Is anyone else noticing their phone gets hot? And does anyone have a cpu temp monitor running and could you let me know how hot your phone is running at?
Thanks
Mine gets hot after a fair amount of time of gaming. Nothing terribly uncomfortable, but noticeable nonetheless.

Yeah mine is warm after just 5 minutes of normal usage non-gaming situations. Not hot but warm. Its starts to get hot to the touch after 15 minutes of heavy usage (ie. Browsing, gaming, etc) . I don't know if this is worth calling Google about and having them replace it, or is everyone's phone like this and I just need to get used to it?
I gotta stop reading on this forum the more more I read about this phone its make me not want it does all the things my Galaxy Nexus does. too not while browsing the internet. Low speaker volume. No flash. Questionable battery life. Might go iPhone...smh
Chrome is the problem. Its resource heavy for no ****ing reason.
I've been using chrome and my phone doesn't work hard at all with the same amount of browsing and tabs I always have open.
So its not the phone. You can expect it to get warm when doing CPU intensive stuff. Gaming would be it. But not hot.

Ew no
guess what. youre using a 2,3ghz quad core device, ots gonna get hot when you use it. and itll cool down quick when you arent using it. thats how its supposed to be, thats how it works.
Okay i think it might be chrome as well. When playing temple run, my device only got to 58 celsius. But when browsing on chrome my device went up to 68 celsius. So now I'm thinking its just chrome?

As the other person stated - Chrome is a resource hog and definitely is part of it. Fully utilizing Google Now with the voice search activated (*okay Google*) can definitely do it. Try Chrome Beta, it's much better.
Does it get too hot to the point it won't charge? That what pisses me off most about my g-nex

i think its normal for the 'warm' touch at the back, it doesn't get quite as hot as the nexus4 becuase of the glass backing
i use tempMonitor app, i get around 47c cpu temp when its warm
im running r12 franco kernel UVing to 920mV at 1.95max ghz
Im using TempMonitor as well. When under normal circumstances (i.e. texting, calling, etc) my phone is running at 45 celsius. But it gets hot as soon as i go online or play a game for like 3-5 minutes. Im sure it must be chrome then. I understand the gaming part and how the processor works, but i didn't realize chrome was that bad. Ill try chrome beta. Anyone else know what temperature there cpu'c are running at?

my cpu is anywhere between 0C and 89C, depending what im doing with the phone. its normal to get hot, especially when doing something taxing. itll get hot, but itll cool down fast when the work is done. thats how its supposed to work. anyone complaining that device cpu temp is hot at 65C just doesnt know any better.

Lol well thats why I was asking and looking through the forums on XDA because I've never experienced a hot phone before. Im coming from the moto x which never got above 40C. That phone wasn't a snapdragon 800 though. I just wanted opinions of if it was just my phone or if everyones phone was like this. And if not should i send it in for replacement.

I know that this is BS because my note 3 which has the exact same processor never goes above 38-39 degrees Celsius even if I'm gaming for over an hour. If you think 89C is normal you're crazy.

So some people say its normal and some don't? Sigh. I hope everyone is talking about CPU temp, not battery temp.

what i see in this statement is pure ignorance. human body temperature is 37C, youre telling me that your cpu NEVER goes more than 1-2C over human body temp, even while gaming? do you live in the antarctic?
your only saving grace will be if you meant battery temperature, not cpu temperature. 39-40C would be normal then.
It's very easy to get wrong temperature readings from sensors btw. Trying to find a good app that reads them properly is not.
Parts of the phone warm up quickly but luckily the bottom bezel area does not.

nexus 5 overheating!!!

From yesterday, my nexus 5 is overheating. I controlled CPU and Battery temp with "Trickster mod" app, WITHOUT APPS RUNNING battery temp is 35°C and CPU temp 47-49°C. I cannot understand what's happened??? Until yesterday it wasn't overheating. My n5 is rooted but stock, with Default Franco Kernel (the same configuration i had in past months).
Can u install this app and control your TEMPS, please?
Can u say me if i should get an RMA and change my n5?
I live in India where the temperature's always between 30-35*c and hence, so is my CPU and battery temperature as well. During the night the average temp drops down to 25 when the device isn't being used.
Room temperature and weather around you play a major role in the average temperatures you get. Could be this case with you.
I would monitor the temperatures for a few days and if it doesn't settle down, I would flash back full stock and use the device for a while to see if it changes.
1) Room temperature is about 19°C, so it isn't the problem.
2) I already made all stock this morning, but nothing changed, it was overheating the same
3) If rooted, can u install Trickster mod app and tell me your n5 temps, pls?

My battery sits at 27-30C when idling. The room temperature is around 24C.
Are you noticing unusual battery drain as well? If so, my guess would be that something is keeping your phone awake and running in the background. Try BetterBatteryStats and see if there are any wakelocks stopping your phone from sleeping.
And CPU Temp??

33C, but I wouldn't worry much about that. It's too transient to be of any use. If I open Chrome it spikes up to 45C+ very quickly, then settles back down.

You don't need root/trickster to get cpu and battery temperatures. Anyways, I'm on a custom rom (AICP) with ElementalX.
I am currently using whatsapp and the CPU temp has gone to 42*c and the Battery temperature is showing 33*c.. Room temperature is about 26*c.
As stated above, could be a app which is preventing the device from sleeping. Install wakelock detector and see the culprit.

lmao!
overheating? what world do you live in? you do realize that your body temp is 37C on average? so your battery temp of 35C is still cold! and a cpu temp of 47-49C is pretty cold as well. the safety shutdown for cpu temp is 105C, quite a bit away from 47-49C. your temps arent even halfway there! what you should stop doing is freaking out, and start enjoying your phone. speaking of, you own a quad core phone, when you use it, it will get warm. and if you use the cpu intensively, itll get flat out hot! and thats normal. our phones do not have anything to cool off their cpu, so it relies on the surrounding air to cool it off. unlike a desktop or laptop, which have active cooling systems.
Sorry, but now with 2 simple apps, battery is 40°C and CPU 65°C. When i call, my ear is boiling!!!

safety doesn't mean good. If laptop is a little overheating it doesn't matter, but smartphone overheating is unconfortable....

boiling, i doubt it. boiling point of water is 100C. yes, 65C for a cpu temp is warm, but very normal. and feel, doesnt measure temp. all feel does is give you a difference between what you are touching and what you used to touch. feel is very inaccurate when it comes to a temp reading. boiling is an exaggeration by you. when dealing with real stuff, exaggeration is looked down upon. the cooler your skin is, the warmer your phone will "feel". but that says nothing about temperature. when talking temp, your phone will never be cooler than the surrounding air temo, unless physically cooled down. itll only be warmer, if screen is on, and even warmer when in use. and if plugged in and in use, expect to see temps up to the 70s-80s C.

theres no such thing as a little overheated. its either overheating or not. just like a woman is pregnant or not, shes not a little pregnant. again, i know that you are refusing to believe it, and are looking for someone to confirm your beliefs, but you wont find that confirmation, bwcause your phone is normal. if you want a cooler device, sell your quad core phone and buy a lower cpu speed single core phone.
Maybe 65°C is normal in a laptop, no in a smartphone. Before yesterday it wasn't warm, now yes. Why? Wasn't it normal before yesterday? I don't think.
Configuration is the same, apps are the same, all is the same. I think there is an Hardware problem. I wish see u phoning with a warm display on your ear.

guy, quit fantasizing, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR DEVICE!!!!
it was warm many times over, you just didnt pay attention to it, thats all. and dont tell me it was never warm, unless you live somewhere in space near absolute zero. IT IS NORMAL FOR THE PHONE TO GET WARM, AND EVEN HOT, WHEN YOU USE IT! why do you think no one has told you that your phone is not normal, that the heat is not normal? because that is not true. you can believe whatever you want to believe, i personally dont care. but in reality you do not exist it appears. lol! anyways, here is my phone, its much hotter than yours(99C cpu temp, -1 degree C from boiling water), and its one of the top n5 in these xda forums..

ok, your cpu is really hot. And your battery temp? Maybe battery is the problem. Don't u feel very unconfortable phoning when your smarphone is so hot?
@simms22 I feel where you are coming fom. I know these devices are supposed to get hot. However 99 C is a bit too high considering you don't appear to be doing anything with your phone in that screenshot. I would expect those temps if you were gaming or using G Maps and streaming Pandora at the same the or something.

Im part of trinity kernel, and I do all the testing. part of my testing is pushing it as much as I can, so I can try and "break" the kernel. i actually spend a lot of time around that safety shutdown temp, trying to break things
under normal conditions, you won't ever see 99C. but seeing it in the 70s and 80s occasionally, especially while gaming, is normal.

My N5 dose the same as you
Please, so why trickster mod say to me that "battery is too much hot"? Now it's about 45°C, and I have only 2 light apps opened, no games ( chrome and play books).
