[Q] What ROM are u using now? and give me ur review please :) - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi GUYS, i am going to get Nexus 5 this month.
And i gonna change it to CUSTOM ROM when it arrives, (Since this ROM is PURE, nothing special).
I went to XDA android development thread and original 1 to check some ROM.
OMG, there's so many many ROM. Not like my Old Galaxy W.
I am really confusing and curious, WHICH 1 is stable enough?
So, I would like to know, which ROM are u using now, and ur experience on that ROM. :silly:
-I HAVE NO INTENTION TO COMPARING ROM, all i want is to know ur review-
and NO FANBOYS ROM please. :highfive: THanks you~

Well i havnt tried custom roms yet.. but i am satisfied for now with stock ROM + Gravity Box(gives a hell lot of customizations )

Hi,
Currently on stock 442+Gravity Box+Franco kernel. Works perfectly for me.
Custom ROM Im waitin' for is AOKP. Will flash once it has the customizations which I have now with Gravity...

Stick to a stock rom. Most features in aosp roms are available via xposed modules such as gravity box.
I dont think these threads are useful.

And yes, it works fine with the Nexus 5

I recommend Unitato and GravityBox and Xposed,

Lol at the above comments.
I've unlocked, rooted, flashed Cataclysm ROM, then flashed back to stock. I missed the camera. Seems like it's better on stock :/

Oh and to stay on topic im using CM11 right now with Linaro Kernel r30, I can play DT2 Ultra High GFX via .xml mod and their are no stutters, not even kidding, seriously...
Im just updating to the new nightly realese like 2-3 hours ago, :3

I am not a fan of ROMS.
There is always some issue with them. They optimize the heck out the software but the take away is issues.
I prefer stock.
You honestly cant beat stock + xposed + a custom kernel (i use francos)

Stock 4.4.2 ± Xposed + Gravity Box + Franco Kernel + Dalvik optimizations + Sound mod.
On a very different note, I totally find this thread reminding me of the new ways scams work nowadays. Plus a loophole and scammed find new ways. Is this the new way for people to ask about beat threads now?
To OP: Get your phone first. You might not root at all. And if you want to try ROMs then try one by one and see what is stable in your opinion and what makes you happy. As far as reviews of each ROMs, you will find those in their respective threads from users who have installed it.
Read and search.

Cataclysm is awesome. Its stock feel entirely with minor extras. I've been on it since release. Only ROM I really enjoy. Combined with some Franco action.

I was very happy to help, Scott. I know from experience the ROM is worth the wait! Thanks again for looking out for us T-Mo folks!
Being the guinea pig, I can confirm 100% that everything works perfectly. It does take about 5 mins to wipe and 5 mins to install so don't freak out!

The biggest thing is he now has a base. I sent Scott our system dump and boot.img files and he put something together, and while he couldn't test it, I did at the risk of bricking my phone so we can all have a clean base for ROMS. You're welcome

There are zero advantages to the "average" person. None at all...
Unless you fall into these categories...
1. Screwed your phone up and half the things just don't work right because you "read something on the internet to make your phone (battery last longer, speed it up, random useless failed feature here)" and it didint quite go the way you expected it to and you cannot send TXT messages (just a random made up example). This would be a great way to fix that...
2. You flashed "Dev A's" ROM and you realized that the color (random color here) is not for you and you are about to go insane but are on the road so you can just flash this back to get back to a stock look.
3. You want to build your own ROM for personal use and you really dont know where to begin but you know what apps you DONT want in the phone. Yo could use this base to get started.
4. Your another Dev that doesnt have the experience of setting up a stock rooted ROM and may need to use this base to get started. Many people use my stock rooted ROMS across a MULTITUDE of devices because they trust that they are as close to perfect in all aspects as possible. (I was a newb once too and needed to use other stock roots).
If you dont fit into those categories... Then this rom has no value to you.

[Q] I need some ROM recommendations?

I recently installed PSX v2 and PSK and the ROM + kernel is great.
Sadly, the creators of the ROM is disabandoning development of the ROM on XDA.
So when Android updates to 4.4.1, I highly doubt I can continue using PSX if I update.
Which is why I am asking for any good recommendation of ROM and kernel combinations to replace PSX (unless they return).
I am looking for a ROM + kernel that is not bloated, not feature heavy, and fast with good battery.
I can customize the phone to my liking after installation with Xposed framework.
pls leave me your opinion for good ROMs and kernels. =]

[Q/Possible Req?] Xposed + Stock

I'm liking this stock android but its mini-downfalls like being unable to unlink the notification sound from ringtone bugs me. Is it possible to build a rom with xposed+stock Google build? Would anyone be so kind to point me to some guides if it is possible or even better, if a beautiful and talented developer out there would like to have a go at this  lol.
Eh? Just install xposed. What's the big deal?

By install, are you saying theres a flashable zip out there I can use on my Nexus 5? If theres no other method other than using a flashable zip, I will most likely not be able to do this lol. Which is why I'm asking for help either with some guides or letting me know that there is a zip out there.
Just read the xposed thread. It comes as an app that you install that then installs the framework. This is the normal method of using it

I just installed it on mine a couple days ago. It's really easy. In on stock now but still have a lot of the features I used to only get with different ROMs. Including the volume thing you mentioned.

You were asking for a stock ROM with xposed, how did you think you were going to install the ROM if not through flashing? But as was said, as long as you are rooted it's an easy install and gives so much control over your stock rom. Check out the xposed thread and go for it. You'll be happy.
Yes, just found it. Didn't realize it was just an apk lol. Thank you everyone.

Download & install Ubuntu, the android source code, and compile. Then make your changes.
Evaluate your skills, if any, you might be better at Kernel development than Rom cooking.
At the end of the day, simply put, if you want to create a custom ROM, no whatever what base you use, straight up source or someone else's, you have a lot of reading to do, A lot of friends to make and definitely not post a thread about how to even start.

[Q] How can I change the colour of my battery & network to the LG G2 ones

Hi guys,
I'm new to Android, in fact I just got my Nexus 5 today. I would like to change the colour of my network and battery icons from the default white to the same colour as the ones on the LG G2. See attached image.
Is this possible, and if so how do I go about it?
Thanks in advance.
Regards.
Edit: I don't have enough posts to post a link to the colour of the LG G2 battery and network icons
Root + xposed framework + gravitybox mms xposed module.

Haha. I really like those colours, what can I say lol. I'm a little apprehensive about rooting my device though. As I understand it, if I root I'll no longer get the OTA updates. And one of the selling points of the Nexus 5 for me was the fact that it gets all Android updates straight away.
There's an ota helpdesk thread in general.
Quick ota updates also means quick updates to full roms...

You're not going to be able to do what you want without changing the system and giving up easy ota updates. But they're easy to apply through a custom recovery.
OK, so it looks like I'll be rooting :fingers-crossed: Is the cfroot the best way to go? Or I've seen another thread all about rooting the Nexus 5, which seems to assume you're using Windows. I'm running Linux Mint.

Personally, I would do it by myself using adb and fastboot instead of letting something else do it for me. But I guess cf auto root works as well.
Thanks for the help and advice guys. I've decided not to bother rooting, it's just not worth it just so I can change the colours on 2 icons. Thanks again.

Indeed, but recently coming from iOS I'm very happy with kitkat I just wanted to change the colour of those 2 icons. For me to do that I'd have to root. And if I root I lose my OTA and then have the hassle of having to flash the updates myself.
Actually, you don't. Unless you make changes to system files. Stock rooted would have no issues with otas..

Did you unlock your bootloader yet? Do that at least. It won't affect your device's OTA update or anything and locking it is extremely easy.
---DO IT IN CASE YOU DECIDE TO ROOT LATER---
it'll pay off trust me.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I've done a bit of reading and from what I gather even if I root, unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery, I can still install all the very latest Android updates simply by boot to custom recovery and flashing the update. Is this correct?
What are some of the benefits of rooting? And would a custom ROM be better than the stock vanilla on the Nexus 5?
Sorry for all the questions. I'm just trying to get things clear in my mind.
Thanks again.
Also - Is there a way of rooting without wiping all my info on my device?
No you cannot root without unlocking the bootloader which wipes device.
Benefits of root are in the faq stickied at the top of this forum
