How is the GPS on the Nexus 5?? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Right now I have a note 3 and I use GPS daily the problem is it sucks on my note 3. It will lock on for a while then just stop mid route. So how is it on the nexus any heavy GPS users in here??

I've read some complaints about the GPS on the N5, but every time I've used it it has locked on extremely fast and never lost signal. It's the first phone I've had with a consistently good GPS, I've had other phones that locked on quick sometimes and other times could take up to several minutes.

My N5 GPS is wonderful. I get 10ft accuracy all the time, very similar to former galaxy S3. I had a crappy experience with Optimus G Pro which never had accuracy better then 33ft and would take 30-1min to lock in the GPS. the N5 GPS locks in immediately and has worked great even in Boston around tall buildings.

I have had 2 Nexus 5's already... and although they do lock extremely fast, they drop their lock at random... both phone displayed this behavior. i am a heavy Wazer and CAMSAM user...

Dead on for me (6 ft), also when driving i don`t loose my position.

Galaxy gps fix?

So my gps works and gets a lock, just a little slower than other phones (5-10 seconds). When navigating, it is also usually a few seconds behind (ie, I turn on road 1 and 2 seconds later, it tells me to turn on road 1).
Has anyone used the galaxy s gps fixes on the nexus?

....the GPS fix isnt needed
Out-of-the-box GPS devices typically need 15 minutes to get a lock for the very first time. The whole point of A-GPS is to shorten that time.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_to_first_fix
After acquiring a satellite signal, the receiver can begin to obtain approximate information on all the other satellites, called the almanac. This almanac is transmitted repeatedly over 12.5 minutes. Almanac data can be received from any of the GPS satellites and is considered valid for up to 180 days. Manufacturers typically claim the factory Time To First Fix to be 15 minutes.

Of course old devices get a quicker lock than factory-new devices. The old device already has the necessary data, the new device has to start from scratch.
GPS lock in less than 30 seconds is actually impressively good. If you feel that this is too long, then you don't need GPS, you need magic.
And don't even think about returning the phone (or even complaining) before you have tried to get a fix for 30 minutes without any success. Standing still, outdoors, with a good, unobstructed view of the sky.
You guys can say what you want. I have had 10+ Android phones and [besides the Vibrant] have never had this bad of a GPS experience. It is slow to lock on (~10 seconds) and is constantly behind during navigation.

Seems you're the exception rather than the rule. My Euro Galaxy S and vibrant sucked regardless. NS is immediate and accurate to single digits typically. Could not be happier with the GPS on this device.

This post reminds me of Louis CK's bit on impatient people.
What kind of navigation software?
I found this kind of lag is the navigation software issue.
I am using Sygic Aura on HTC Desire, it is also sometimes behind few seconds than the actual situation. Then I turned off the POI display (it is useless anyway on Sygic Aura), and now it is OK (much better).
In the past, certain version of TomTom also has this kind of lag on my HTC Kaiser WM.

GPS performance question

Hello, I just dug myself out of two Samsung infuse devices, Just miserable GPS performance
How's the GPS on these i727s?
Thanks for your time.
Sent from my LG-P506 using XDA
Mine always locks within seconds if I'm in the car. If I'm inside it takes a bit longer but still fast enough.
I had a Captivate and an Infuse... GPS on both was useless. Got my SR in November and GPS is rock solid. I consistently view 20-23 satellites... and lock anywhere from 9-13 sats.... within a few seconds... and accuracy within 9 ft. MyTracks is unbelievably accurate as well on the SKYROCKET.
GPS locks instantly. Probably in a second or less it is already scrolling to my current location.
I do have an issue where it will say "GPS signal lost". I understand when that happens when I'm under a bridge for a while, but I think it is due to overheating. It usually has the signal again within a few seconds.
I would say other than the annoying random GPS signal lost issue, and battery life, skyrocket works better because it locks on instantly, reroutes faster, than my Garmin Nuvi 360 which I've used for the last 6 years and it has taken me everywhere I wanted to go.
In other words, it is a 100% capable first-class navigation device, but make sure you have a charger.
don't foget you can also flash the GPS universal fix also it works great it here on xda

I have to say WOW. Just got the Skyrocket and can get GPS fix in my basement. No other phone has been able to do this.
Got a fix in six seconds.
My last phone was a Captivate with crappy gps hardware. The only way I could fix the GPS on it was to buy the Skyrocket. Works awesome on this phone.
Drains the battery pretty hard if you're using Navigation on a long drive, but if you have a car charger (or USB port in your car) you can keep it plugged in and everything's fine (battery will actually charge while using it too, so on a long drive you can use gps with car charger and finish the drive with 100% battery).
skrambled,
It was really hard for me to buy the Skyrocket after the wife's Captivate was such a disaster. I read and re-read the reviews and threads here and finally decided to get one. I got a refurb for $20 direct from AT&T and so far I am loving it.
Tried the GPS in the car today and fix time was 2-4 seconds with four trials. I would turn GPS off and leave it off for a while then turn it on and open the GPS status app to check the time to a fix. What ever fixes Samsung implemented for the GPS issue they certainly work.
I wanna comment on one thing. I'm using Google Navigation, which I believe it is up to par with the best of them, if you update text-to-speech. I'm using IVONNA (Kendra) text to speech with Google Navigation.

Weak GPS?

Just used my one x to navigate to work today. GPS seemed really fragile in that if I wasn't holding.the phone directly under my windshield it quickly lost GPS signal. It would re lock after putting it back under the wibdshield.
Anyone else? Comments/tweaks/solutions greatly appreciated.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I saw a few similar comments in other forums as well. I'd suggest you go back and exchange for another one. Any tweaks will only temporary ease the problem for a few days but a permanant solution is to get a phone that just works out of box.
Ugh, was hoping I wouldn't hear this problem pop up. Horrible GPS on my Captivate so was hoping to hear the GPS on the One X was good. Hopefully this is a rare problem...
I've seen it in using the speedtest app - where it will have problems locating a server near me (which there are quite a few) - not sure if this is an app problem or gps problem. I haven't had a chance to use gps much besides that...
I tested out the GPS last night on my way home; it locked extremely quickly and held onto it the whole time. I thought it worked very well.
For what its worth, I'm in Texas.
GPS is amazing on mine. Better than my DHD. I consistently get locks in less than 10 seconds, and most of the time it's less than 5. Maybe it's an AT&T thing, since I'm on Rogers.
Mine locks within 10 seconds in the house, I had a bunch of fc so I reset my phone to factory settings and the GPS and fc are gone. I would try factory rest then use GPS status.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
when it locks onto you, is it right where you are at or just close by? Mine seems to find me quickly, but it is always like just across the street or similar.
The GPS is definitely weaker,
My Skyrocket locks on inside of my house within 10-20 seconds and gives a very accurate reading (pinpoints my room). The One X takes about a minute to lock and it shows me inside my neighbors house..
I'll have to try this out on the road later on, might be an issue for navigation
Used mine today for something on the job. Locked extremely quick and worked fine the entire time.
Mine took under ten second to lock inside my house, but it did show me at my neighbors home. Good enough for me.

I used the GPS a bit last night to track a short walk around my neighborhood and found the results to be a bit disappointing. I don't use GPS often, and my last phone was a Captivate, so I"m not sure if maybe I was expecting too much it seemed to have lost the signal at least twice and it plotted me all over the place (road) when it did hold the signal. I had it in my pocket most of the time, so perhaps I was expecting too much for those conditions.
Did you guys enable GPS satellites from location settings? Mine would load locations before I did but only was super accurate when I turned it on.

No, GPS in Captivate is crap. That's well known fact. Everything else should be much better. My Galaxy S2 is very consistent in tracking. I don't expect HOX be any different. You should have 15 to 30 feet accuracy all the time.
Does the HOX use GLONASS?

Yes.
I tried it out a few times with gps test. I get 10+ satellites within 10 seconds indoors. That's the most satellites I've had on any phone I've owned.
GPS is a little weaker than on my Skyrocket but still good enough to get me around. Just used it today without a problem. If I had never had the skyrocket I would have said that it's "normal" for what I've seen in other phones.

[Q] Nexus 5 GPS

As I'm waiting for my Nexus 5 I'm interested on GPS performance of this new phone. Anyone can take a screenshot showing GPS signal and how much does it take to lock in?
GPS Test on Play Store
Anyone?
No one? I'm guessing it uses, glonass gps.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Mine took 10 seconds to get a lock on (19 in view, 11 in use) after clearing aGPS history in the app. This was done indoors about 5m from a window.
Hardly scientific, but hope this helps!

Is anyone experiencing long delays (2+ minutes) while waiting to get a lock (subsequent locks are faster)? And once a lock is achieved, the accuracy is about 30 meters? Lock should only take a couple seconds, accuracy should be 10-20 meters, right?
GLONASS
Does Nexus 5 has GLONASS sensor?

no problem here.
indoor lock (near a window) takes less than 30 second, 23 sats in view, 14 locked, 5-10 meters precision.

I get long delays, and sometimes it doesn't lock at all.
Same here. Very long lock delays every time.

Same Problem here.. Sometimes it only locks to five and the accuracy is bad.. Notably while playing ingress today
i went out running with mine last night, the gps was terrible, had it on high accuracy as well, nowhere near as good as the N4 or S3
I find it locks on very quickly. Fat far quicker than my old galaxy nexus

What is the difference?
So some of us are getting poor GPS on the N5 and others are getting great response as you would hope.
What is the difference? I got mine early out of Hong Kong and I am getting the slow variable quality lock.
In case it is relevant my build no is KRT16M, Baseband vers os M8974A-1.0.25.0.17 and Kernal vers is 3.4.0-g9eb14ba.
Happy to provide anything else if relevant.
Of course it might be something mis configured at my end, but there seems to be a group with poor experience.
Not as fast or stable as my Samsung s4
Very fast. About 10 secs or less.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
I noticed that mine is very slow indoors, but works faster outdoors. It still take a few seconds to lock.
I was driving in Salem, MA last night and constantly losing GPS signal. It was a clear night, and I'm not aware of anything that should have interrupted signal. I was streaming some music and connected to my car's head unit via bluetooth, neither of which should have affected it.
I used it the other day to find a hobby shop. It connected in about 10 seconds, I only had to go about 3 miles but it was perfect.
As long as I'm not hiding it under my desk of electronics, it gets a lock indoors in about 3 seconds, and resolves all the way down to about 10 feet of accuracy in less than 10 seconds. I haven't had it lose GPS once since I've gotten it on Tuesday, and I've used it every single day several times.

[Q] Any one having GPS issues?

Nexus is unlocked and rooted. I get slow or poor locks with GPS status. Does this happen to anyone else?
I've only had the phone for a day, so I can't say that it was working well before or not.
I just opened Maps to test...I'm on a moving train and it locked on to me in about 7 seconds
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Compared to my Samsung S4, N5 gps lock is not as fast or strong in hardware only mode. It's workable but nothing remarkable.
My first lock (cold fix) took 23 seconds, Hot fixes are between 2 and 5 seconds. About 24 satellites in view, locks on to 11-13. I've done these "tests" at a window not outside... I can't say I'm not happy with it
update- I was able to get a lock this morning and it seems to lock a little faster. I know it's common with some phones that the first lock after reboot is the longest.
I'll keep an eye on it.
