Stock Pulse Notification Behavior? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can someone please once and for all confirm what exactly makes the pulse notification light flash when running stock 4.4.2 that came with the N5?
I've searched all over an nobody seems to know for certain what conditions activate the light without the use of a 3rd party app.
Every Android device I've owned always had a notification led for Missed Calls, New Emails, New SMS, New MMS, New VM, Charging the battery etc.
I find it hard to believe that you need an app such as Light Flow to enable these standard features.
Any help would be appreciated as I'm considering RMA'ing it as I can't get it to work for the life of me.

Missed calls, new email, texts, and voicemail: yes (just white). Charging the battery: no.

Make sure Settings->Display->Pulse notification light is checked, and that the Notifications you want are enabled in the individual app Settings (e.g. Gmail, Hangouts, etc). Also the light only pulses when display is off.

Thanks guys
I've already tried that among many other work arounds out there.
The only thing I could get to work is with text messages and even then sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

[APP] Light Flow - Control your LED notification and reminders

Just found this app and thought I would share. I wanted an app like BerryBuzz that I had on my old Blackberry (that is the only thing I missed about my blackberry This app works great. Don't give up right away when it doesn't work right off the bat. Took me some time to figure out what needed to be checked etc in different apps to get it working properly and without double or no notification. I had my gmail, sms, missed call, and google voice all flashing appropriate colors and sounds including the reminders!!! I love it! The dev is awesome and responds to emails. Give it a try, its worth the buck. There is also a free version.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rageconsulting.android.lightflow&feature=search_result
It's not working with LG Optimus 2x ROM FR17.
Just purchased this app. Unfortunately I didn't read the forums before I purchased the app. LITE version would have been more than enough for me.
Right after installing I turned on LED notifications for all of my apps (skype, mail, twitter etc. etc.).
Didn't change any other settings. Just enabled LED notifications for my apps.
After 7 hours of sleep my battery went from 90% to 35%. And this is more than 60% down !!
- Has anybody experienced this?
- Should I enable just the most important notifications (like missed calls)?
- Could anybody provide a list of best settings and number of notifications to set?
- Maybe it's better to set to blink rather than always ON? Or maybe LED doesn't consume battery much at all?
So I love this app BTW, but there is one request I have for a potential upgrade, able to change the led light on incoming calls. as well as making the incoming alternate all colors really quick!!!

Notification LED...

First, I know there is NO notification LED on the Charge. I'm sure some of you are tired of requests and want to yell at me, and others want to say I told you so, there is a notification LED.
I want t see if there is an app that would allow the bottom hardware buttons to function as the notification LED. Similar to how the HTC Touch Pro 1 notifications worked (pulsing for e-mail, fade in/out for sms, etc...).
Any ideas?

NoLED. There's a workaround to get only the backlit keys working.

there is a way to enable BLN (backlight notifications) but it must be done through some custom kernel work, which afaik right now is not possible since we don't have kernel source code to work with

Yea, I forgot to mention in my original post I've tried noLED. It worked fine except the whole power button thing was annoying. I had to turn the screen "on" with the home button (even though technically the screen is already on. The app said the power button feature is buggy). Again, this just goes to personal preference, and some people may not understand why I have trouble when it works for them, but I have my own preferences as that's just me. I don't like the screen bright at night, so I changed the icon colors, then I couldn't see the icons well during the day, so I had to change them back. I don't like that the icons flash around the screen (even though that's to get my attention - hence the whole purpose of the app), but it didn't completely suit my needs. It is a good app, and I'll continue to use it (I'll have to reinstall it), but my main problem is I couldn't configure it to show Google Voice notifications. I don't use sms, I only use Google Voice, and this didn't work as well. Same with the puzzle lockscreen; it doesn't show Google Voice notifications.
If you monitor google voice (in settings) it does show google voice notifications because I do it. The little google voice pops up.

Not completely true... We have the kernel source for Froyo. We (TeamGummyCharged) worked on BLN's for the charge but failed on first try.. The BLN also requires a binary for the lights one that is not compatible with the Charge.. Maybe after 2.0 is released and we have more time we will pick it up again by reaching out to the original dev for that project but at the moment it is shelved.

nice, good to know you guys can work on it... I personally don't see a use for it as the hardkey lights don't seem bright enough, though it'd be nice as an option (I'm coming from a Fascinate where they were bright and actually useful lol)

[Q] Light Flow/notification LED issue - keeps flashing

Hello everyone!
I recently replaced my 3 year old Nexus S with a Nexus 5. It's my second smartphone and I love it. Naturally, I rooted it and everything.
One of the apps that peeked my interest was Light Flow. It's a bit mind-boggling what you can do with it, but I'll figure it all out. However, I noticed one issue straight away...
Notifications in different colours seem to work. I did a test with whatsapp and it blinks green: perfect. However, after a couple of "blinks" a white light flashes "through" it if that makes sense. It doesn't alternate between green and white, no, they just flash through each other, the white light slightly before the green light.
I don't know what is causing this white light to flash, but after I turn off Light Flow and close the app entirely, it keeps flashing. I have to restart my phone to make it stop (or disable notification LED in the Android settings menu).
Does anyone have a similar issue? Or can someone maybe tell me what boxes I have to tick in the Light Flow settings? It could very well be one of the settings is causing this issue. If someone has a certain set-up and it works fine, I'd love to try it and see if it fixes my issue.
Thanks in advance!

Do your notifications work by default? Like, your stock notifications? Mine didn't, but do with light flow. Weird, no?

Yes, notification light works as it should

I tried another app (Light Manager), and I had the exact same problem. Don't get me wrong, the app is working fine, but once I set everything up and I do a test notification, a white notification keeps flashing even after I turn Light Manager off. The only thing that helps is to disable LED notifications in the Android settings, or to reboot the device.
Something is telling my device that there's a notification, but I don't know how to fix it.

Thanks for the personal reply, andrew! I really appreciate that
However, for some reason my phone keeps flashing this white light, even after I turn off Light Flow. I have to turn off the notification LED in general or reboot my phone for it to stop. The white light notification starts after I do a "missed call test" like described in that link (that works perfectly fine by the way), or after any test I do with Light Flow for that matter. And it doesn't stop no matter how often I clear my notifications.
EDIT: NEVERMIND. Totally forgot that I don't have a sim card yet. That's what was setting off my notifications. Weird though that even after disabling Light Flow it keeps flashing, and weird that it was white instead of cyan like it's supposed to be.

Sorry for wasting your time. I totally forgot I didn't have a sim card so Light Flow was making the LED flash because it thought I had no signal.
Still weird that it keeps flashing even after I disable Light Flow, and that it's white instead of cyan like it's supposed to be.
Anyway, thanks a lot for your help! It works fine right now. I'm not too sure how the cycle thing works yet. I've tried it with a red slow flash for low battery and a green fast flash for whatsapp but the result is the LEDs flashing kinda "through" each other. Naturally, with different flash rates, I guess.
Quick question for people. For the last couple of updates I've been getting quite a lot of reports of certain notification types not working. Hangouts, emails (not gmail), whatsapp etc
I know that all the types that people are having issues with have been using the notification listener (quite a few stock apps don't use it), has anyone else been seeing this. I'm trying to track it down, but I can't recreate it and the beta testers haven't been able to either. Just interested to work out how much of an issue it is as I've never had reports of this before.
Hey Andrew,
I tested the color cycle for textra app, and google voice. I purposely got both notifications with the screen off and waited for the colors to cycle. It started off cycling both colors, but the cycle was not consistent. For example, the colors were red and blue. It would show like this- blue....red....blue..red..blue..red....red....red....red....red
The time between colors was not consistent, then eventually one color took over. I have the setting to 'cycle all - medium' under battery settings. Have not tested under charge settings yet. I am not using the 'highest priority' or 'show latest' options.
This isn't a deal breaker, but would like to bring to your attention.
Thanks!

I use it for WhatsApp, BBM, Hangouts all w/o issue on my stock N5. My only complaint is the perma-notification in the notification tray. Can't seem to get rid of it with any of the options in settings. Wasn't an issue with older versions (I'm using the latest)
Ive been using lightflow on my N5 and it's working well
I have multiple notifications set up - all set for 'permanent' rather than flashing. I have turned EMAIL notifications OFF
however - sometimes, I am not entirely sure when, I notice a white (slightly bluish?) blinking LED. I can't figure out what causes this. I suspect it MAY be email (exchange email, not gmail) - but I am not sure - I can't reproduce consistently.
Also, sometimes when I do a 'test model' on SMS apps, no LED lights up. I've stopped using "SMS Apps" and now am using "Hangouts" as a notification instead and that seems to work
Had 2 hours full wakelock on lightflow this morning -from the minute I unplugged from charge
very strange
Isn't the white light you're seeing the default LED color? Whenever I get a Gmail or Exchange mail it blinks white. I don't have Light Flow installed.
Yes I think it is the standard light. however with lightflow that's not meant to occur.
either way it appears to have stopped now.. not sure how/why!
Try turning off your LED notifications in each program and just have Light Flow control them. That should stop the default white light from showing.

Hey Andrew, Great work on this app. It is fantastic and I was happy to upgrade to the full version.
Just wanted to share that I have the lingering notification scenario also. essentially I get a few notifications and once I clear them out and the screen turns off, the light continues to blink. It is usually the last notification that came in (I have different colours set and I can tell that what sticks is what came in last).
To be honest, I wonder if it is Kit Kat not clearing out the notification and the issue has nothing to do with LF. Interestingly another way to clear the issue is to bump the notification with another real one, and then accept that notification (i.e. light still blinks without any active notification, I call the phone and miss the call, it blinks for the missed call, I clear that, and we are back to normal)
Hope this might have helped.
Anyone able to get the Camera Light LED/flash to work? The one on the back.
I enabled it in setting and I've tried all the other ones not officially supported too with no success.
Also had the notification light not dismissing problems too. But I'm thinking I got it figured out now. Hasn't happened since.

No LED indicator for missed calls

Apparently there is no blinking LED indicator for missed calls, i.e., you have to wake up the device to check for missed calls. I guess we can't be too picky at this price point, but does anyone know of a 3rd party app that would provide notification?

Not surprising actually, since the same situation holds for google phones like the Nexus 4 and 5 for example.
Try the excellent Led Blinkerapp which allows to configure the LED for various events including missed calls. The developer has an app thread here on xda.
The app allows you to even configure the LED light blink rate (or can set it to continuous). Please try and post back if this feature works on this phone!

Actually both the nexus 4 and the nexus 5 have colored led's that can be set using lightflow. I never really used it as much as I should.
Thanks guys. I installed the lite version of LED Blinker and it actually worked! It apparently uses it's own blinking light on the center bottom of the screen which is ok. So, this is at least a solution for the Idol 3 until something better comes along. By the way, "Missed Call Reminder" didn't work. "NoLed" did work, but I didn't like it.
Re you saying LED Blinker uses the home button in the nav bar for the blinker? If so that's pretty cool. I may have to try it.
Actually, I think it's right above the home button if I recall. Give it a try.

LED customised light not working...only "default" blue light

Hi
Does anyone know how to set up custom colour led notifications on s7? All I get is blue light. Tried light flow and light manager. It looks like Samsung made it difficult for some reason to set your own customised led notifications. Tried the recommended (by these led apps) "Samsung walkarounds" but still nothing. I tried
disabling notifications in Gmail, system's led notifications on ...nothing. Is there a fix for this?

Probably not. I corresponded with the LightFlow dev last year for a while regarding the issues with the S6. Basically Samsung has implemented their own code controlling the LED and it does not play nicely with LightFlow. He tried to implement some workarounds and there were some custom settings in LightFlow to try to get it to work but ultimately it was super buggy and never worked correctly. I ended up uninstalling LightFlow and just dealing with the stupid and unintuitive stock colors. :/

Thanks for reply. I wouldn't have a problem with keeping the stock led but it's pretty close to being useless. Blue light only for all notifications and even that is not reliable...and don't even start with red and green lights...I'm going to stop reading "professional" reviews because nothe even single one mentioned that led notifications on Samsung phones are screwed. Why Samsung decided to mess up this great and highly usefull and practicall feature is beyond me. This is exactly why people stick to Apple. Am ranting a bit, sorry.
Wonder if rooting & flashing custom rom helps with this.

I contacted the Dev in the weekend and this is a temp. fix.
In Lightflow, enable "Switch screen on" on all notifications that's not working, ex. phone, email, twitter, etc. Restart your phone and it should work. It works for me.
I swear by Lightflow. My favourite app.
So you have to have the screen come on every time you get a notification and then lightflow works as normal?
This is bringing back bad memories of hours messing around with this on my S6 lol.

Thanks but having screen switched on and off every time I get a new email isn't really an option for me. It would kill my battery in a few hours.

Hmm, it actually seems to be working for me too, although I did get a message to install LightFlow Legacy app for some reason I can't remember now? And it said to disable the full version which is odd. All these strange workarounds thanks to sammy.
Eh it's partially working now. Blah.
So it seems to be working fairly well, except for Hangouts. It simply won't blink green as I have it set to. It seems to still use the default blue color and slow blink. Anyone else have this issue?
I use led blinker pro... No issues... Have full control over led colors, length of notifications, blink rate etc...

I already had that setup with the exception of the "device default" for the screen on time. Still doesn't work for me but I guess it's due to the fact that I have the always on display option turned on. This is reinforced by the fact that I get the blue LED until I turn the display on, and then the color I'd set after that.

Yep, that's the sign of the AOD issue. I decided LF gave me more useful information than AOD, so I turned AOD off. The LF developer is getting an S7, so hopefully he'll be able to figure fixes for these issues.
Light manager has been working almost perfectly for me with my exynos S7. The problem I am having now is that I can't find a way to stop gmail from causing the slow blue blinking LED and this always supersedes the light manager LED so if I get an SMS notification and then get an email the blinking blue light will cause the SMS notification to stop. So annoying. If I can figure out a way to stop this from happening I will post it.
i installed light manager today to...and different led colors seems to work
I actually just ended up freezing gmail in titanium and installing blue mail.
