No Charging Light? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Phone just arrived!!! woooooooooooooooooooooot
quick question... havent turned it on yet, just have it plugged to the wall and charging. but I noticd the LED light isnt on at all... no colour... im used to all my phones having an LED light on when charging.
when I tap the power button, it shows me that it's charging (a white battery that fills up animation)...
is this normal? dont care much, but would just be good to know for the future...
thanks! tried looking, but dont see an answer

It's normal. Apps such as lightflow can enable a charging light but there is no stock charging notification light.

Why didn't you just turn it on and use it? No need to charge the battery prior to usage.

No worries. Anytime.

There is no stock charging light unless you download an app like lightflow.

Do you happen to know if Lightflow enables a change in color from red to green upon the phone being fully charged? Thanks

You should be able to as there is a separate setting for"charged". Just set charging to red and charged to green.

Yes it can. This is exactly what I do with Light Flow on my N5. There are three different settings for "low battery", "charging" and "fully charged". So I have it blink red rapidly when battery hits 15%. Then, I have it solid yellow when charging. Finally, when it hits 100%, it changes from solid yellow to solid green to let me know when it's done charging. It works flawlessly. Obviously, you can set whatever color you want for these different settings.

Lightflow is pretty awesome. You can have different LED colors for different notifications from various apps and control their pulse rate. Paid version lets you customize for 3rd party apps.

So has anyone done any research to figure what the battery drain, if any at all, is caused by the LED. Curiosity got the best of me and i had to ask.

I don't think the LED causes any noticeable battery drain. They use extremely low amounts of electricity.

I dont have a NS yet...I have been reading the boards and trying to decide if I want one but I have a Fascinate and since its been rooted and debinged its a good phone but stock it was crap. I use something called BLN to notify me when I have a text or email. It lights up your buttons at the bottom. Its in the market but I think your rom has to be made to use it..I'm not sure about that but you might want to investigate that...it works better than NoLED.
I have no led running now. It works. I have it set to blink So it flashes the TV off animation which is cool.
Honestly. If You already have a galaxy s phone don't bother with the ns. I had my n1 since the day it came out I needed a new phone. There are many things ivwill miss about it. Like the desktop doc.....
More threads about this? Really? Can we have a mod lock this please...

Best buy couldn't get my upgrade info so I paid full pop. Was on phone with t mobile and bestbuys system couldn't get it happening so I can still get another phone suplimented. Tried a mytouch 4g but returned it. So much t-mobile garbage on it plus gotta pay for wifi teather
BLN ftw, wait for a kernel that implements BackLightNotifications and then download Blinky which makes your softkey's blink ever few seconds when you get notifications.
So awesome. 3 out of 4 calls ended with the phone restarting
Sounds you guys are having even more trouble than Galaxy S phones, I hope it gets sorted out soon.
I can deal with a dropped call but having the phone restart wtf.... I may un install everything and go from there adding one app at a time

Left hole (circle) is the proximity sensor. Right hole (oval kinda) is the ambient light sensor. Hope this helps.
Does this phone even have a led notification light? thats the dots next to the earpiece right?
I ask because on my phone, i never get any LED flashing notifications when i receive a text, email, miss phone call, or etc.
Ive searched all throughout my settings but to no avail.. help?
Thats not an LED. It doesnt have one! Search. Its been discussed over and over again

Is something wrong with my Nexus S?

I just got this thing yesterday, so I'm not sure if it's a defect or supposed to be like this, but:
1) When I plug my phone in, no light comes on to confirm that the phone is plugged in. (Usually on every other phone I've had, as soon as I plugged it in, a small green light comes on to let me know it's plugged in.)
2) When I get a text, e-mail or missed call, again, no light comes on.
(Usually a green light would blink constantly until I check it.)
That's about it.
Can anyone please confirm how it should be?
1. There is no Notification LED. So no lights can be lit. The way to check is to plug it in, and on the top status bar, if the battery animation is going.. it's charging. This is Android 101.
2. Same thing as #1
-- A way around this, if you REALLY want it is to root and to flash a custom kernel that supports BackLight Notification (BLN), most (if not all kernels) have this feature. Out of all of them, I'd recommend using Netarchy's kernel.
There is nothing wrong. Nexus S does not have an LED light.

Thanks my friends.
Yes, I will now root and flash kernel/roms.
I just didn't want to go through the trouble of rooting/flashing if the device itself was bad. I feel much better now. Thanks.

what's the point of the notification LED?

It lacks brightness and is hidden behind the speaker grill, I can barely see it light up most of the time. What a waste.
It is duller than I'd like but unless it is in direct sunlight, I have no problem seeing it. I wish it wads a little brighter though.
At least is has one. A lot of android phones don't.
I want to know if anyone has figured out how to make it stay on longer than 5 minutes

Green has been HTC's standard notification color since the g1 first came out. Once the device is rooted you'll be able to use LED color changing apps.
I was wondering, there is another whole on the opposite side of the front reading facing camera and the notification led. I wonder why htc put that there it seems to have no purpose. That probably could have been a nice place to put the notification led.

It's most likely the ambient light sensor, or the motion sensor that shuts the screen off when you place the phone by your face.

If rooting will allow me to change the LED to something a little more noticeable (red might work well I would think), that might be ideal.
So far, the green barely stands out, especially since my desk is next to a window with ambient sunlight.

I believe that we only have 2 colors to choose from, the green and the abmer, the one that comes up when charging phone. I always had the amber on my HD2 and it was always visible. Hope we could do the same on this phone later.

The LED light can actually produce multiple colors but like someone said. It's not possible until it's rooted unless the application your using gives you the option.

If you use a 3rd part text messaging application like Chomp or Hancent it gives you the option to make your LED multiple colors plus the option of how long you want it to stay on.

I hope this isn't the case. The Thunderbolt can do Red, Green, Pink, Blue and White.
i like having a notification led, as opposed to the Vibrant, which didn't have one. I just wish it lasted longer than 5 minutes.
There is an app for the g2x that pulses the four bottom buttons for notifications. its pretty spiffy...i wrote the developer he said it's possible it could work on the sensation but he doesn't have one to try it out.
It would be a pretty nice option to have because I agree, the led as is is pretty much invisible

Notification Led diode

Hi guys!
Iam having a problem with notification led diode. It doesnt work. I havent seen the light yet.
I just tried Light Flow app but it also wasnt able to light the led up.
So i assume that my phone is broken in that part and the diode just doesnt work on my Nexus 5.
Does anyone have some the same problem?

I installed Light Flow. Took a few minutes before I got any lights.
There's a test mode in light flow. Might be worth trying that too.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk 4
Test mode in LF didn't work for me. I was going to uninstall but then I noticed the battery charging light came on. Now all of the programmed lights in LF work for me. I have not retried the test light feature.
light flow might have just glitched up the led for a bit. If it stops working again, try clearing app data, or reinstall, or uninstall light flow altogether. It has been known to have some issues.
In light flow you have to turn off the screen after turning on test mode, if you haven't tried that already.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Yes, the screen MUST be off for the notification light to illuminate. In addition, at least for Light Flow, it can take several seconds for the notifications to light up, even when performing a test.
Same problem here and it's going to back for a refund. It was actually a replacement unit for the first one which had speaker issues.
I tried everything and never saw the light come on once while the first unit worked fine with the same settings.
try this

Are you saying you dont get a blinking light when a notification is received while charging? Or are you saying you dont get a light INDICATING that a charger is connected? Your wording is a little confusing.

You could see if Light Flow will let you do that. I'm not sure honestly.
CyanogenMod (and I assume other ROMs) has that built in.
Ledblinker app is better than lightflow in my opinion

Latest Gravitybox module allows you to set how often the LED light blinks for notifications. I set mine to blink every 3 seconds.
