[Q] Xperia J - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys, I have xperia j, i love the stock launcher, but i don't like the stock rom because its sometimes slow and its sound is low, so i installed a rom instead but i want to keep the stock launcher here because i dont like the rom launcher, Understand me?
Simply.. i want the stock launcher to work on the installed rom, how can i do that?
Please answer me as fast as possible, Thanks! =)

Ok, providing you are root open root explorer( download it from playstore) go to /system /app and find the launcher ( usually home.apk ) and copy it to your sdcard. Then flash your custom Rom, copy your launcher from sd to system /app and set permissions to rw-r-r-.Then reboot. For activating your launcher press the home button. If you getting fcs ask from a dev to port the launcher

Use ES file explorer or some app like it to set permission, in es file explorer press options key then you'll find root explorer in tools press it and grant superuser permission to it and mount r/w, select rw for all 3 options and then copy home.apk to system/app and select it goto properties, you'll find permissions there click change and make it rw-r-r. That's it.
PS- you must have root access for it

yeah i've done that but after all the steps nothing happens, and when i try to install it, it says "App not installed"
sorry for bothering but im still a newbie

Don't try to install the app manually. Just put it to system /app , set correct permissions and reboot. After reboot finished press the home button.

done, nothing happened :/

Did you pressed the home button. You must press it after unlocking you SIM and screen. Also, a window may pop up asking you with what app you want to process and you must select your stock launcher. If none of the above worked then go settings>applications find the launcher that comed preinstalled with your Rom and select clear defaults. For further help you can ask from someone to do a proper port. I can't help further.

I will work, only if the rom is stock-based. If it is cm-based, or aosp-based it won't work.

[Q] Phone.apk

Hello all,
I did some searching around and couldn't find the answer. I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to pull the Phone.apk file from a CM build and use it in my rooted, but otherwise stock NS4G. The reason I want to is because CM's builds have a built-in blacklist app, that I want.
So what did was copy the Phone.apk from the latest nightly (22), and tried to installing it on my phone. It didn't work, and I just got the error 'application not installed'. And simply dropping it in the /system/app folder (overwriting the old phone.apk) didn't work either. I just got a lot FC's whenever I tried to open the call settings.
Is what I'm trying to do even possible, or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Well. Contacts.apk is the one you want. And yes it will work. But you have to be deodexed also.

Didnt work. It still told me that the app was not installed. Is there an official process for this?

Are you deodexed? If so flash this
http://droidfiles.us/downloads/mikeyinid/Transparent_Dialer.zip
Its transparent but its the CM dialer. You can grab the contacts.apk from CM if you want and put it in the .zip instead, I personally have had issues when using the one from cM, not the transparent one though.

Failed again. I tried flashing it from recovery and it just says 'installation aborted'. I am running the deodexed build of Gingerbread, that I got from Pete's site.
I use system app remover you can get it in the market. After you install it you will find a folder called /SystemAppBackup. Drag your cm apks and copy them to this folder. Open system app remover app, click the menu button, and press "restore app" choose your apps and boom. Rom manager doesn't always work for me on this phone even when you set permissions. This has worked for me. Hopefully it will bring you luck

Didnt work. System app remover let me copy the modified apk over but once I did I could no longer open the dialer (app is not installed on your phone error). So instead of messing around this, I'll just wait for CM to go final.
Thanks to everyone for your help.

make sure the app has the right permissions when plopping it in the right folder. Root explorer is good for checking and setting permissions

You don't install this like a regular app. Use root manager and push to system>apps. Make sure to adjust permissions.

Here's a new black app that's worth trying out, no grey and looks killer:

Look for an app called custom ICS search, it allows you to create a widget go any color you want.

[Q] Launcher Problems

I would like to start by saying this is entirely my fault but I would be very grateful for any help.
So, I downloaded a custom launcher called touchwiz 4.5 onto my phone and everything was working perfectly until I decided to open up root explorer and try to change the name so it would run in the background instead of TW3. So I did it but when I pressed home it asked me which launcher to use and I selected the wrong one and the set as default was checked. Now, I am stuck without a launcher so I can not open anything at all to fix the problem.
I will be extremely happy if I do not need to buy a new phone and thank anyone in advance.

Left Soft Key -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Find & select the TW4.5 launcher or whatever in the list -> scroll down to Launch by default -> Clear defaults.
Thanks, but there is one thing I forgot to mention earlier. I cannot access the main screen because I receive force close messages while the phone is on, and there is no delay between them so I cannot even use it. I was thinking maybe there is a way through the computer.

You have a root so you gave cwm recovery, correct?

Look up Odin in the Bible. You can use it to restore the phone. If you can make a backup of your micro SD onto a computer. Other than that if you deleted your launcher your phones gonna keep FCing on you. Cool thing to try to delete though.
ADB Push the apk(s) back over?
Your best bet would be to just go into CWM, create a NAND backup, Odin a new ROM, and advanced restore your NAND's data. That should clear up everything.
Using ADB is not that easy, especially when you're new to all this stuff.
Everyone should be forced to learn.basic adb commands before being able to root their phones for problems just like this.

[Q] Replacing default android launcher

hello xda
i have an lg c800g (or lg my touch q) and i absolutely hate the default home screen or launcher and i was wondering if I could switch it out with another launcher (my favorite so far is adw EX) unfortunately my phone is needed everyday and i don't want to spend 250$ for a new one. the reason why i haven't just used a ROM is because i'm having a lot of trouble with clock work mod so roms aren't an option. however I've found a way to keep apps installed to the firmware using an app called link2sd one of its features is to install and remove straight to the firmware as I've just tested sucsesful. so if it was possible can anyone take an old 2.3 android and use this app to install a launcher and see if it works after system reset it would be great to never have to deal with this ugly home screen again. any feedback would be appreciated i am rooted but no clockwork mod or roms can be used.
From my experience, I believe you can simply install a launcher from the Playstore and start using it (set it as default too).
If you want to remove ur stock launcher, root ur phone and then use a root explorer to delete the launcher's apk.

if you have seen the lg c800 with 2.3.6 its impossible to boot into recovery mode it just resets you phone and i haven't found a way around it so i've just been manually removing bloatware and upgrading basic apps :silly:
There is no way that you reset the phone and it would return to your ADW by default. Resetting erases the usbale memory on your phone, and makes it like new, of course if you haven't done any hacking onto it, like rooting and stuff. But if you want that, I would suggest a custom ROM, and edit the zip file, replacing the launcher2(that's what HTC Desire ROMs have, if your ROM doesn't have that, try looking for an alternative) with your ADW launcher in WinRAR or 7-Zip. That ought to do the trick.
i have done this to my phone, deleting the default launcher from /system/app folder (using root explorer), then i copy the launcher that i want to the same folder, change its permission to rw-r--r--, and reboot...

If you do all this though, all the removing the stock launcher, then moving a new launcher into the system root, what would happen if i reset the phone, would it start up on the launcher that was added?

It depends, but yeah, it will probably load up the stock (default) launcher - and your launcher will be deleted. But you can redo the entire procedure to set it up again...

[Q] Stuck on a launcher

I just flashed a firmware that came stock with Holo Launcher HD launcher, and I have used this ROM before and successfully killed it and replaced with Trebuchet or TouchWiz. Well, now I killed it in Titanium Backup, and it still shows up when I press home, completely intact. However, It is no longer in the Titanium or Settings menu Apps list, and when I try to install a different launcher it does not ask me which I would like to set as default when I press home. I would just clear the defaults but like I said it doesn't show up in any Apps list on the system or Titanium. So now I am stuck on junk Holo Launcher HD launcher with seemingly no possible alternatives. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
