Hey all. Normally I use a Bluetooth headset for all my calls, but occasionally I don't have it on me. When I take a call using the phone's regular speaker I can barely hear the person on the other end. If I have any background noise, it's impossible to hear them. I've got my sound turned up to max. Anyone have some suggestions?

Since 4.4.2 both speakers on mine get incredibly loud. The N5's earpiece speaker is small (small circle rather than a long slit) so you do need to play with it some to get it set properly on your ear. Call someone and talk to them (indoors and quiet preferably) and adjust the phone on your ear till you hear it best. That's the position you'll need to use. I got used to it quickly and use about 40% volume even while in car at highway speeds and it is loud enough for me. Maybe clean your ears with a q-tip?:laugh:jk
See if that helps, if not maybe something is going on with your earpiece speaker?

I just did an echo test and I sounded okay. Maybe it's everyone else that calls me?

Hard to troubleshoot when you're running custom software (rom +kernel +old radio). If to really want to get to the bottom of it (imo) you should go back to stock 4.4.2 with NO mods and see if it does it. Otherwise you're just shooting blanks (again imo). Anyone in the PA/faux/radio thread experiencing similar?

trickster mod
Install trickstermod kernel settings app and go to kernel settings, see if you can increase the gain for the speaker. If there isn't an option, you need to change kernel to one that allows sound tweaking (elementalx does) and then boost the gain through trickstermod app, or another free kernel settings app of your choosing. Changing the gain is a kernel setting that gives a very good boost to sound levels.
Figured it out. My screen protector had a cut out for the speaker, but I never popped it out. Took it off and I can actually see the speaker now!

I believe he meant why do you say its blown. Weird is a completely non-descriptive term. If you provide a better description it would be much easier to help you. Also, I'm not aware of spare speakers for the SNS.

Normal. Blown would be heavily distorted sound from all volumes. The crackles are normal> If you aren't happy with that, go do a swap. Or get a whole new phone together... Seriously, if I continue to have problems, I'm gonna drop it completely and go back to BlackBerry.
I. May wait till another android phone attracts me thence ill swap

I think mine just blown today.
My text rings started crackling.
Then all my sounds would stop, then little keyboard ticks would be fine, shutoff sound fine. then again rings crack etc.
Well I go play music and it's crackling like crazy, then goes on/off.
I BLOW into the speaker while music is playing and it "works" better.
Anyways now, it's really dead unless i use an air can to blow on the speaker and it'll make sound.
Blown.
Guess I'll make a claim for my SquareTrade warranty
Running stock 2.3.3. Even with call volume maxed out I can barely hear the person on the other end. I have tried with multiple calls to multiple people and get the same thing.
Anyone know how to fix this problem?
Anyone experienced something similar?

i have that problem, i tend to use speaker more. hopefully a mod comes soon
I'm running CM7 RC1 with Voodoo kernel, not sure if the Voodoo sound patch has any part in this, but the volume on my phone is quite loud when using Skype. But in a noisy environment, I'd rather use a pair of noise blocking earphone or headset.
Yea i can barely hear the other person as well. I dont know if its just in my head but it almost seems like it started after the 2.3.3 update

During a call turn the volume down and then back up. When you turn it down you won't notice much difference but you will when you turn it up again. It seems that the volume settings thinks it's at max when it isn't and you need to reset it by turning it down.
Hmm ill give that a shot

Don't think so. The same issue was present with the N1, kernel developers implemented an audio boost feature that really helped this issue out. Hopefully we will see the same for the NS soon enough.
I would LOOOOOVE for an audio boost similar to the N1 to be implemented for the NS.

[Q] volume of the front speakers? Help please
hello all
does anyone know the phonecodes for the nexus s (service mode)? I want to increase the handset (speaker to the ear)!
in the galaxy s, he is **#*#197328640#*# but not work
nexus s CM7 netarchy 1.2.7
sorry for my bad english
does anybody know how to raise the volume of the front speakers?
I'd like to do this also. Default max volume is too low, sometimes hard to hear what people say.
exactly!
It must be possible to increase the volume
with the voodoo kernel only the speakers on the back work
I have the same problems, in call volume is too low :-( and its not the provider because with my Galaxy S the volume is okay.
Phone speaker is quiet but with my bt earpiece I can get it loud enough to hurt my ears.
Sent from my MattedBlues CM7 Nexus S from the XDA Premium app.
i don't know about you guys, but i have no problem hearing the call even in busy ( noisy ) streets environments.
using any of the 3 methods:
normal ear speaker
back speaker
BT headset
on 2.3.3 stock, no mods of any kind
temporarily solution:
During call set volume to min and then to max and then it's OK. After reboot problem is back.

I would check your speakers, because I was having the same problem and it turns out one of the bottom speakers is blown!

Never really paid attention until I noticed that I couldn't really hear you tube videos and music! Which was fine before, it was loud enough! So it was then I realized sound was only coming out one side so dunno!
I'm getting a replacement either way and I'll compare the two!
...
it's been confirmed numerous times that one is a mic and the other is a speaker.

i use a program like total recorder to boost the volume of my ringtones, then copy them back to my sdcard. there are a couple of free apps online that do the same.

How is that lame? You would prefer two speakers and no mic? Then it wouldn't be a phone, would it?
2 speakers and a Mic would be nice. Other than the noticeably low volume I love this phone.

volume+ seems to let you do some audio tweaking i had the same problem where my audio was all the way up and wasnt very loud i downloaded and installed Volume+ i think it is on the market not sure but this allowed me to run my volume at 1/2 up and its loud as heck
it sets speaker, headset and as well as bluetooth volume levels
This doesn't allow me to boost past factory settings

It doesn't matter the app. No matter if I'm watching a movie, listening to music, or checking out YouTube the volume level is extremely low even when maxed out.
I'm currently running the latest CM 10.1 nightly if that makes a difference.

Someone posted a little while back that a soft toothbrush can get dirt out of the back (and front) grills that can cause sound to be low.
Maybe give that a go?

Toothbrush seemed to work once I got over being gentle with it. I also worked at it for a few mins rather than just a quick brush over.
There definitely is a noticeable difference in the back speaker volume. Thanks!!

The only thing I really hate about my HOS is the fact that the speaker volume is so low!. As I work in a noisy environment I regularly miss calls as my phone is unheard by me.
I used to have a similar problem back when I owned a HOV but fixed this by using volume+ from play store, unfortunately it doesn't work with the HOS, neither does any other volume boosting app in the market and I've tried many.
It's a killer problem for me and if I can't resolve it I'll be ditching this phone which I love for a nexus 5 early on the new year.
So if anyone has any tips or mods for increasing system volume output then please help.

I don't think you will have luck boosting the speaker volume.
Maybe think about a smartwatch that vibrates your wrist when a call is coming in.
