[Q] Request for Coby Kyros mid7042 tutorial - General Questions and Answers

I was wondering if I can upload a tutorial for Rooting, installing CWM(ClockWorkMod), and flashing Google Play Store through to the Coby Kyros mid7042 tablet, which apparently isn't getting much love.
:fingers-crossed:

Root, Recovery, Google Apps, and debloating of Coby Kyros Mid7042
Root, Recovery, Google Apps, and debloating of Coby Kyros Mid7042
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Backup any precious data from your tablet somewhere safe, like your PC. Atleast until the operation is done. This is easy as s**t....lol Just follow this to the letter. Tested on Windows 7 32bit, and 64bit.
-Extract the folder 'Kyros-7042-Root-CWM' onto your desktop.
-Double-click the 'adb.exe' file, it will quicky install some extra scipts for the tablet.[It won't actually install anything on your PC]
-Make sure your Coby tablet has atleast 70% battery power.
-With the tablet turned on, plug it in your PC.
-Let/have your PC install the latest drivers for the tablet. When done, safely eject.
-Turn on USB-Debugging on your tablet.(located in Settings>Developer options)
-Reconnect tablet to PC. If need be, it will install more drivers.
-You will need a microSD card, microSD card adapter(so you can insert it in your PC).
-So go ahead, and place the microSD card into your PC, and then you'll need to copy the 'gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip' file onto it, aswell as the 'Titanium_Backup_root_v6_1_4_1.apk' file'.
-Insert that microSD card containting the 2 files into the tablet.
*!!!IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A MICROSD CARD ADAPTER!!!
Unplug tablet, and insert the MicroSD card into the tablet, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in to your PC. On the tablet screen, select 'Turn on USB Storage' from the prompt. After a minute or so, a dialogue window should pop up on your Windows PC screen, close those, now you should be able to copy those 2 files into your tablet via StartMenu>Computer>whichever drive your extSD card is, if unsure which is extSD drive, copy to both. After copying files there, close all windows.*
-While still being plugged in, double-click on 'root_recovery.bat' file. A dark window shoud pop up, and do it's thing, and when done, will say 'press any key to finish when done'. This will install a recovery, and root the tablet, this is needed to push Google Apps Store.
-Close the black pop-up window, and safely eject your tablet from your PC.
-If you check in your app drawer, you should have 'SuperSU' installed, that's good, now open it, and it will want to install extra binaries, install them, and close it.
-Now, power off your tablet.
-While holding the 'Volume +', and 'home-key' button, press, and hold the 'power button', and hold them until it turns on. It will now be entering into the custom recovery you just installed.
-Use the volume button to navigate through the options, the home-key to go back, and the power button to select.
-OPTIONAL~This is a good opportunity to make a rom backup of your current rom. Never know.~
-When done backing up your rom(or if you don't want to), Select 'Install zip from SD', choose 'gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip'.
-It will now flash Google Play store. When done, your phone may reboot autmatically, if not, then choose reboot.
-If your tablet restarts to a frozen dark screen, fear not, just hold the power button to turn off, and try again. If still no luck, go into recovery, and use that to reboot. Took me once or twice to see the Android is optimizing notification.
-Now that you also got Google play installed, you should keep in mind that Google play needs to be signed-in in order to use, and that you might get '.com.gapps...not responding'error message, just go through it and complete it as best as you can, if you can't get the screen to go away, just keep pressing the back/home screen button, or if you can, the home icon.
-To fix the annoying error, go to 'Settings', then into 'Accounts & Sync', be sure NOT to sync Contacts, Photos, and People(Remember, there's no phone on this device, hence the errors). You only need to have 'Sync App Data'checked.
-Now restart the phone, and you should be golden.
-You may also notice, you still have GetJar, and a bunch of other apps you want to unintall. If you want to get rid of these, you'll need 'root uninstaller', that you can easily get free from the Google play store to do the job.
OR
-you can use the 'titanium backup.apk' file that you placed on your MicroSD card. You find it by opening your ES File explorer app, scroll down 'til you see you it, tap it, install it. Hit done. Exit out of ES File explorer.
-Open Titanium, ignore offers, etc..., tap 'apps', and there should be an extensive list of all things installed. Be careful what you uninstall, if you do not know what it is, leave it alone. When you are done uninstalling what you want, uninstall Titanium, and you should now have a minimzed unbloated tablet that you have free reign over.

File corrupt
rrowe1980,
Thanks for the tutorial it looks pretty straightforward. I am having difficulty with the file. I'm unzipping with winzip and it says it is corrupt. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
SH
Just finally downloaded a good copy. Not sure what the problem was. Thanks again.

Still no Google Play

I was able to root the MID7042 android version 4.03 however when going into CWM there seem to be no zip files present to load Google Play or any update. I've copied them to both the internal SD and external. I can see them from the PC but cannot find them in CWM. I,m starting to believe there is no real solution for this device.
Could someone confirm if this level of OS can run Google Play? If so what am I missing? I don't know why I'm wasting my time on this...
Many thanks,
SH

[Q] Attempting to root

So I have spent the last hour unsuccessfully rooting my samsung captivate. I have watched the video, that is sticked . Once I use the once click root button, and it sends my phone into the restart menu I get the same error every time I get E: in /sdcard/update.zip (status7) instillation aborted. I have also tried directly downloading the file onto my phone without the use of a computer, and the phone is unable to download the file cannot download. the content is not supported on this phone. I really need to be able to root my phone so that I can unlock it because I am travelling abroad, and At&t refuses to give me the unlock code.
Ok I'm going to try to make this as simple as possible for you. I will assume you have proper drivers installed.
1. Connect your phone to PC. (Phone has debugging mode)
2. Open the One Click Root folder on your PC and you should see a file call "root" in it. Take that and drag it into your internal sd card of your phone.
3. Rename it to update (or for some people, rename it "update.zip")
4. Now click the root button on the "One Click Root" program and your PC will attempt to push the root (update.zip) file into your phone. If it succeeds great you are now rooted!
5. If it fails then no problem, your phone will go into recovery and you can manually select the update.zip file you transfered and simply go to sd card and choose that "update" file and select "yes," you should now be rooted! This will probably solve your issue since you keep getting the abort message.
those seemed like very simple instructions yet somehow i managed to do them and still not have it work.
Connected the phone to the computer Debugging mode was on and i clicked mount to allow computer acess.
copied the "root" file into the SD card, where it was subsequently renamed "update" I run one click root, it fails, the phone then goes into recovery mode, and i click reboot, goes to home screen where i go My files --> Sdcard--->update and it then tells me that no actions can be preformed with this type of file.
Where did I go wrong?
try naming it "update.zip" then.
You could just use the AIO program that's stickied in the Development section. It generally works well.

Great tool and easy to use !!
ok that worked thanks a lot guys.

[Q] questions about root

I've been reading here at XDA, I can find the instructions - no problem.
However, in the WIKI there are a few things I don't understand.
The problem also is that all the posts assume you know what's going on and they start in the middle of a thread.
Then there's advice to use Odin, not to use Odin, use this, don't use this.
Some say unmount the SD card, some make no mention of SD card.
Then there's different backups. I've seen Titanium mentioned.
There's advice to get the latest drivers from Samsung - The phone isn't even in the dropdown list of phones, and the letters for the model don't match.
There's the custom ROM advice. Since there aren't many for this phone as yet - and all you want to do is remove crap, what do you look for?
I have to get rid of that stupid Doubletwist and airsync before I toss the phone!
Z
It is rather confusing isn't it...
In a simple answer....
Find the SuperOneClick zip file in one of those threads in the Dev forum & root the phone. Then go get TitaniumBackup ( Pro Recommended ) & you can remove the bloatware. I'd recommend the Pro Version so you can freez the apps you don't delete.
That's what i did on my SGS4G ( and i am not a experianced modder myself )
One problem. I downloaded superoneclick and NET can't find the runtime file.
I'm using XP and ver 4 of NET. I turned off NOD32 and Online Armor.

Uninstalled NET 4 and put in 3. I can open the file, but NOD32 keeps quarantining RAGE. Says it's a trojan.
I don't really want a custom ROM - but would like some more information on Titanium Backup. The Market won't download to the phone, but going to the market on the phone will let me download.
Thanks,
Zuben

Let it scrub the RAGE file, you need the other one actually to make it work
Which one? PSneuter?
Also some confusion about the Samsung driver. I also have a Galaxy 3. I downloaded Kies and the driver. I downloaded the new driver (did not install it)and stuck it in a folder named Samsung on the Desktop. Kies is in the Samsung folder in programs and I assume that the original driver is in there, too. The driver is listed in Add/Remove programs.
I can either delete Kies or rename that file to something else, and stop Kies from running. So there's 2 drivers, and I suspect they are the same.
Since I can't send a download from the Market on the PC to the phone, I have to download from Market on the phone. I can't install Titanium unless I root, but can I get to Titanium from the phone if I do root?
Thanks
Z
I use linux... so i have no idea what Kies is or does..

So which phone are you trying to Root? Samsung Galaxy 3 or Samsung Galaxy S 4G? If your rooting the S 4G you can find the drivers here http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/c...728034640796/SGH-t959_Vibrant_USB_Drivers.zip
I have no experience with rooting with XP but I assume it would be essentially the same steps.
If your looking to do stuff on your Galaxy 3 then please go to this forum

and do your research over there.
It’s not that difficult to root the SGS 4G Phone. The first thing you need to do is make sure your phone is communicating with your computer. Install the Samsung USB drivers.(make sure you have the right drivers for your O.S. either 32bit or 64bit) In your phone go into Settings/Applications/Development and make sure you check “USB debugging”. Connect your Tethering cable to your phone. On your home screen you should see “USB Connected” popup on top of your screen. You should be able to press USB connected button from the drop-down menu on the home screen and see the external SD card on the computer now. If that works then Turn off USB storage. (leave “USB debugging” checked) Open NOD32 application from your system tray. Go to Settings and select “Temporarily disable antivirus,” put your password in if prompted. Then Download SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse, expand the file and go to SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse Directory. Run the SuperOneClick App. When it opens don’t change anything and just click “Root” and let it run. It should say rooted when done. Then go to the Market on your phone and get Titanium Backup and install it. It will ask for SuperUser permission and accept that on your phone. If that fails press “Problems” button, Then “Get Busybox”. Install the new Busybox. You may have to close and reopen Titanium Backup again. I would say to download and install ClockworkMod after rooting and before getting Titanium Backup, Except ClockworkMod currently does not work for the SGS 4G Yet. So, skip that step for now. You should be able to backup your phone after this.

This is good information, but what about for Mac users? I was previously able to root my Samsung Vibrant just by installing the update.zip file via CWM. Should Mac users wait for this course or can we make it happen now?
Also, what's the benefit of rooting right now? Just to remove bloatware? There's no custom roms yet, right?
Look at the Unix instructions about associating the USB ID with the Mac. I haven't tried it, but I suspect that is the missing step.
Update: Nope -- According to Google, http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html#setting-up
Setup your system to detect your device.
* If you're developing on Windows, you need to install a USB driver for adb. If you're using an Android Developer Phone (ADP), Nexus One, or Nexus S, see the Google Windows USB Driver. Otherwise, you can find a link to the appropriate OEM driver in the OEM USB Drivers document.
* If you're developing on Mac OS X, it just works. Skip this step.
* If you're developing on Ubuntu Linux, you need to add a rules file...
(Emphasis mine)
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
I'm wanting to root the 4G. The Galaxy3 was bought unlocked so it doesn't have the crap on it. Like I said, the ROM seems to be ok, it's just the stupid bloatware.

[Q] I think I bricked it??

I think I bricked my Viewsonic G Tablet. I was running VEGAN perfectly then I decided to jack around with Ubuntu the Karmic link found here on XDA under "Ubuntu on G tablet" Did everything the best I could, failed, failed.. booted into clockwork, went to factory reset, no back up found anywhere, formatted EVERYTHING (data, cache, rom) If I plug the USB cable into my laptop it reads as H drive but when I click on H drive it says "please insert a disk in H:" if I put anything on the sd external, I can't get my tablet to even read the external. Every time I click on "mount SD ext" it just says failed. Without clockwork, I just get big red letters "Magic value mismatch" Please tell me I didn't brick it good...
I can get the roms or the zip files etc on the external SD but without being able to boot to or from it, I'm lost.
Thanks

Start there. If you need more help search for "nvflash" and you'll find lots of helpful posts.
Thank you for your quick reply! I am afraid to say that I am SOOOO ignorant on this stuff. I followed the link and it had a lot of information on running the nvflash (I think when you didn't have clockwork installed??) It said stuff about lots of stuff I don't understand, I am SO SORRY to be so basic. I do run Linux Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 on a dual boot with my machine so we can work in either environment. I donwloaded the prereqs from the drop box so I have the files along with two different ROMs, but I can't get the Viewsonic tab to even recognize (via my laptop) the internal SD card. Then the External SD card either so I do not know of a way to get any of these files to the tablet?
Please continue to help me in the MOST basic way you can, if you will. I would be so VERY grateful and give kudos, thanks, or whatever needed. I just want to make it work.
If you are able to boot into recovery then go to advance, then select the option to partition your sd card then select 2048 then 0. See if that helps to get your internal sd card recognized. That has helped me before.
Just an idea. No guarantees it will work.
Start by relaxing and taking a few deep breathes. The instructions there are about as basic as you can get. Main thing istonot get ahead of yourself or read more into it than it says.
I find it easiest to use Linux.
Create a directory to hold the nvflash package.
Extract the nvflash_linux_2010110500.tar.gz archive into the directory.
Extract the nvflash_gtablet_2010110500.zip into the directory.
Put the gtablet into APX mode. From off turn it on while holding the volume down button. You should see the splash screen then it will go black. Plug it into your computer with the USB cable.
Open a terminal window and confirm that your computer can "see" the gtablet by typing "lsusb" command (without the quotes). It should respond with "0955:7820 NVidia Corp.". 7820 means the device is in APX mode.
If all is well at this point change into your nvflash directory and type the following command.
./nvflash_gtablet.sh
Now let the magic happen. In a few minutes you'll be back to factory specs ready to go.
THANK YOU THANK YOU A MILLION times thank you! I can donate to you or XDA via paypal, please let me know how to repay you all! You are wonderful!
No problem. Here to help when I can. If you really feel the need then donate to roebeet (the author of the original instructions).
Have a great day.

THANK YOU!!!!! Man, I thought I had a $400 brick on my hands! I couldn't even boot into recovery! I'll donate to whoever I need to at this point!
These machines are incredibly hard to brick. I've tried ;-)
If you'd like to donate pick one of worthy developers from the GTablet Android Development section and support their work. I use Roebeet's TnT Lite and those instructions above were first written and posted by him as well, so...
Glad you got it working. Have a great day!

[Q] Best regards to greatest wizards; any idea for dead rooted Garmin Asus A50 ?

Hi all you wizards,
I had this now brick rooted and jiggling around it with uninstalling some preinstalled apps, but when I attempted to replace some fonts which was my main goal, it turned out that it was not really rooted!!! probably the rooting method and app was malicious. Then none of the apps could fully root it. Z4root followed by Superoneclick and Universalandroot have been tried, no chance but slow and unstable device. finally I decided to master reset. After this, a strange virus like fake warning sticks to the screen saying the battery cover is open and asking to restart! when I really open the cover another warning comes up that battery cover removed. phone is working in background. It responds to USB connection, even detects an update of ROM I copied to solve the problem but no chance.
Has anybody any idea to get it back to life by using PC as there is no direct interactions with the phone coz of the virus?
basically I prefer to get rid of the virus through SDK and ADB if possible although I am a mushroom and Dono how.
Is it possible to wipe off some infected data or I have to wash out all the ROM and install a new one?
I have another phone handy exactly the same thing, should I copy all data from other one to this one or the update version of original ROM would work?
it is Garmin Asus A50 nuvifone with built in full GPS and navigator; 256 ROM, 256 RAM, 600 MHtz CPU, ARMv6, android 2.1 update 1
Thanks so much in advance for any participation even your experiences without useful result
here is some more information about the matter;
I needed to install some fonts for other languages which are not supported by android
So I tried to use information and files to get my device rooted and replace some fonts in system/fonts directory and some files in system/lib directory to use other languages in my android.
1- I started with Z4root , I downloaded through device and installed it, and I uninstalled my antivirus as it always said it is not safe, so I activated USB debugging and then permanent root and I had the super user. I installed some apps and used them to uninstall some preinstalled app and similar issues. When I tried to replace fonts and files, my file explorer with root ability, it said I don’t have enough authorization or something to access the file, I tried more root file explorer but same result, even a root checker said my device is not rooted!
2- Then I tried UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta5. Again I downloaded it through my device browser but it could not help as it said fails! I thought it is because of Z4root so I uninstalled Z4root but failed to root again.
3- I wanted to use pc method and root my phone by PC, even though this method was for android ginger bread and not my brand but as much as tried, my device did not show a recovery mode in start up by pressing power button and volume key but when I pressed middle key of arrow keys went to safe mode. so I ignored it.
4- Finally I downloaded the oneclick app through my device from the net. It was a zip file with so many files and super user, I just installed superuser but not helpful to replace font, then uninstalled.
5- Again installed Z4root but my phone was freezing and unstable so decided to master reset to factory setting. I did it once but after reset, nothing changed so I did it again. This time a warning sticks on the screen says;
” close the battery cover, and restart the device to complete first time set up.”
and asks for restart.
There should be something wrong as when I really open the battery cover, another warning comes up and says; battery cover removed!
Phone is working in background, even I copied a factory update of my ROM and its been detected but the crazy warning does not let to do anything but restart!
Now I need help to show me how I can use my PC to reset my device as upon a usb connection it asks for interaction and lets me to work via usb cable, and then how I can go to recovery mode in start up?
Otherwise it is a brick, lol
it does not let me to do any interaction cause of the crazy warning. it asks for restart, thats all I can do, or other warnings like asking to do update or usb connection option or battery cover removed, but no more. it means I can not activate usb debugging if needed or follow update process through mobile UI. besides in this kind of phone there is no recovery mode but just something like "USB polling mode" and "safe mode." the warning is in safe mode too and I dono how to use "USB polling mode".
however the only option is ADB, and I do not have an backup of the rom but another simillar phone to make copy or the update file, if possible to copy them via ADB which I am dono how; like which commands and where to copy them?

found this but dont know how to adb .
but for sure on giving a missed call and following the idea in link u can use the phone but annoying error wont go away
I have the same problem but I cannot receive calls
Hello
A couple days ago I got a Garminfone from a friend, I use it mostly as a GPS only, because T-Mobile does not have any coverage in my country and I don't have the unlock code.
Yesterday I wanted to make a hard reset to start over, holding the D-pad left while powering on the phone, **WIPE USERDATA** appeared on the screen.
Everything was fine until it restarted, after the restart it showed the following warning: "Close the battery cover, and restart the device to complete first-time setup", the battery cover is closed and it does not let me do anything, the official ROM update does not install and If I do another hard reset the error persist and the phone does not make or receive calls.
Before this issue I got it rooted using z4root
Is it there anyway to update the device without using the update launcher from the phone?, or reinstall the 2.1 update using the usb cable via command prompt or any tool?.
I just want to get rid of this error and keep using the device as a regular GPS
Anyone can help?
I really appreciate any help you can provide.

[Q] T02A internal memory says 0, no install

ok so this is my first post, ive been messing with android for a year now, first rooted about 2 months after i got my first phone(verizon lg vortex which is also screwed up(boots up but doesnt go past the verizon logo after the lg logo) anyways i thought id save money ordering a "non-branded" tablet Model: T02A (It is the same as EKEN T02 i think)
7`capacitive touch screen 800x480
4GB NAND FLASH
512 MB RAM DDR3
ARMv7 A10 Cortex A8 1Ghz
0.3 mpx front camera
Kernel 3.0.8+
OS - ICS 4.0.3
but after installing titanium backup i simply used the reboot the device option, come to find out it basically factory reset itself and now shows 0 in the internal memory but 37.7MB of apps, it wont let me install apps and there is no way i can find to direct it to install in another location, i can download apps from anywhere but the market but no install, is there anything i can do to get the int. mem. back or somehow flash the original os? ps i have aalready tried hard resetting both with vol down and power and the settings>backup&reset>factory data reset>reset tablet.
as it is i can use it as basically a video screen with stuff on my sd and surfing the net, but i bought it with a bit more in mind. if anyone can PLEASE help i would appreciate it, and im sorry if this post is a bit long...

Dear Friends,
I am a newbie to android.I also faced the same issue after rooting my T02A tab(Telmoco tab,a Indian company but Chinese re-branded device).
I bought it for my wife and did some experiments with it(rooting).Later its automatically doing factory reset in every booting. Also every time I need to login to play store after turning off the device. So she is very upset with the tab as I bricked it.So I did lot of research to bring it up as you guys are trying. After googling I found a support website of EKEN tab (eken.com/support/) and downloaded firmware for T02A and a livesuit(firmware update utility) from another website.
First download both links from below mentioned websites.
Please note that I am not an expert so what ever you are doing please do it on your own risk.
Also these steps and all I found from diffferent google searches so I won't be able to help you if you ask me any questions.
I am happy to answer but no idea about it..
Lets start
Firmware link from eken site for T02A is f t p://202.105.131.8/t02.rar
Livesuit link whatisandroid.me/LiveSuitPack_v1.07.zip
Extract livesuit rar file to a folder and run LiveSuitPack_v1.07.exe and it will extract all the contents to same folder.
extract the t02a.rar(downloaded firmware)and yo will get the following file "sun4i_crane_t02a.img" .Later we need it for firmware update.
Run "LiveSuit.exe" inside the livesuit folder(run as admin)
Now the livesuit user wizard will popup.
If the popup didn't came automatically then choose "wizard upgrade" manually
I prefer you to use the upgrade guide.
so press yes
Choose Mandatory upgrade mode as it is recommended
It will tell you to remove all connected usb devices from your PC as it may interrupt your process.
also remove the power source from the Tablet.
press next
then select yes for to select image file
choose the "sun4i_crane_t02a.img" (extracted firmware file)
The livesuit will tell you to power off the tablet by pressing power button for 10 seconds.
once the device is off press and hold any button except power button .
Then connect the tablet to the computer using your usb cable.
press power button 10 times quickly.
The device will now go to recovery mode(If I am correct)
Then the usb will try to find the driver automatically for upgrade(I am using windows 7 so it found driver automatically)
Then it will update the firmware if you are lucky.....
Sorry for my bad english.....
Fix From Another Post
I found a solution, hopefully this can help someone in the future
The problem was i installed busybox using an installer which causing some file discrepancies.
To fix it :
1. Install Android Terminal Emulator, this app can be installed even if storage shows full. If you cant install the terminal use Uniflashv2 (open uniflashv2 and connect your device with the debug usb on, go to rom modding, then file manager)
2. copy /system/xbin/busybox to /system/bin, if busybox is installed the code is "busybox cp /system/xbin/busybox to /system/bin"
3. power off then power on (reboot)
When I did the above, all my previous apps and setting came back to normal
jeewa19 posted this fix, and it helped/ was my exact problem. I hope this helps others as well :cyclops:
