Who else loves the stock keyboard? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have a Nexus 5 since yesterday and compared to Sense 5.5 keyboard this thing types like a dream. Seriously. Not to say that the keyboard on the One was bad, it is fine, but this one is just soooo.... GOOD. Not to mention the satisfying feeling of the pop sound if you choose to have that on.
Who else likes it? also INB4 Swype keyboard.

I love it, too!
I also tried Swiftkey once, but I don't need any of its additional features: the stock keyboard is just what I need, and its Swipe function works like a charm, not only in English (which has the best spellchecker), but also in Italian.

I also like the new stock keyboard, does what I need.

I still prefer SwiftKey. I mean I paid for the app so I have to use it otherwise my money is wasted.

Meh, I don't like predictions anyway, always have them turned off on every phone I have.

I have SwiftKey in my apps list too, but it's not installed. For some reason I don't trust it, probably just me being paranoid.

Once you start to swipe type, you'll never go back. The stock swipe just isn't as good a predictor as Swype. I found myself having to slow down the swype for the stock kb to be accurate ( especially when you go horizontal with the wider kb). Tried swift key when swype was acting up (patched up now), but didn't feel the predictor was as functional as Swype's.
But if I didn't swipe type, the stock KGB would be more than adequate.

I'm surprised by how much I like the keyboard. I tried Swype a year or two back and it just felt like an unweildy gimmick so I gave up almost immediately. But with the N5 I started playing with it (Nexus variation) and really got into it. When it comes to writing text I find it's almost perfect -- and I've tried to see if I could screw it up. But in Google or the Chrome search bar it becomes awkward & dumbs down considerably, even seeming to miss letters altogether; most of the time I end up typing my search terms and definitely my addresses.

I have Been using SwiftKey for the last two years so when I got my n5 I tried the stock Google keyboard, and it only lasted a few hours before I went back to SwiftKey

Try swipe typing Suriname Suriname sortilege Suriname Adirondacks Suriname Suriname Syrians Suriname... good Dan it.... AIRPLANE!!!!!!.... on the stick keyboard, it ducks quit badly.
sometimes it feels like when swiping on the stick keyboard nearly every word needs correcting afterwards
edit, everyone should post using swore typing with the stick keyboard without correcting anything.. a nice experiment to see how good it really is

I love it. The vibration feels so good haha

i love swiftkey!

Yup love stock keyboard and also because there is Cantonese input which is useful for me too

Swift key is amazy for me.

I like it as well and if you're on cataclysm you can do...this

Swype is really awesome, much better than stock. I'd recommend to everyone to at least try it, there's a free version out there too. Has useful and very intuitive shortcuts, awesomely accurate swipe and predictions, bilingual predictions - most of the time there is no need to change languages.

Swype for XOOM??

I know there were some grumblings about Swype on the XOOM around release time and the team at Swype haven't returned any emails so I come to my community.
Is there any word on the XOOM getting Swype? Soon? Ever?
Anyone have a way of hacking it on? I've tried but keep getting the error "Screen resolution not supported".
Have you tried installing the beta?
http://beta.swype.com

Last i checked the beta didn't work on the xoom, that was the day i got my xoom too, so not sure if a new beta has been released since, but i also heard that swype had no intentions of making a swype version for the large tablets (keeping to the 7" of the galaxy tab) but those could have been hear say, just lending my 2 cents! I'd love to see a mini-swype that takes ups just one side of the screen and you use one thumb, that'd be sweet...
Still not working on the Xoom, but last I read on their forum they still intended to make it work for us.
Just go to themes and apps in this sub forum and you'll find thumb beta. It works pretty flawlessly for a beta
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
I just tried loading it few minutes ago. No dice. But I downloaded Thumb Keyboard last night and it is a massive improvement overall the stock keyboard. I love that it splits for thumb use in landscape mode and that a long press allows numbers and symbols on the main board without needing to jump back and forth boards like on the stock.
I figure if they can't get to market, there's always the competition.
I use SlideIt. I like swype better, but it's not a bad option. It's not free though, but pretty cheap.
Thanks for all the good info! Looking into it now.....

I have both swiftkey and thumb keyboard. They're basically the same concept but I find it easier to type on the thumb keyboard thanks to its responsiveness and functionalities. Nevertheless, swiftkey interface is tron like which is wohoo nice. Though it still has more bugs to ve worked out than as of thumb keyboard

Phone keyboards won't fit very well on a bigger screen. I be tried smart keyboard too. The keys are squished down to the bottom of the screen and are longer.
I doubt that flext9 will work. But still 4.99 is still a bit too much for testing lol
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
Actually I'm using the flext9 keyboard on my Xoom to type this...
It does work Swype style, but not sure if typing is faster or swiping.
I guess it depends if you are using two hands or one to type. In portrait it seems better to swipe but not necessarily in landscape, if you have the tablet on the desk.
After 15 minutes of use I decided to keep it and still using it as my default keyboard so it can't be bad
I like the word prediction bar and the long press for punctuation... haven't tried the voice or handwriting recognition though.

What is the perfect keyboard?

I've tried them all stock, SwiftKey, swype, SwiftKey x beta, smart, better keyboard, an all are mediocre. Does anyone have a really good keyboard? It seems that wp7 and apple hav flawless keyboards right now and its upsetting android is letting me down with quality.
Edit: notice how the spelling isn't even perfect when making the thread. (using SwiftKey x beta)

After getting used to it, the stock gingerbread has quickly become my favorite onscreen keyboard. I've used them all and I like Swype and Swiftkey as well, but I really dig the speed of the gingerbread keyboard. It's a personal choice of course, I hope you find your perfect keyboard!
Sometimes I find it hard to click on the right letter, but the stock keyboard is indeed the most responsive you will find.
Ultra keyboard also seemed ok to me, very customizable and has a tool bar on top of it that offers quick acces to basic actions like copy, paste, cut, settings etc from a single touch. It also supports gestures. I really enjoyed typing on it but it has this small issue that was a deal breaker for me: typing on the enter button requires a small pause to be clickable, I think the space button as well. I think its there to prevent accidental typing on them while you are typing words, but it really pissed me off.
The keyboard from HTC Sense also seemed to be very ok, I found it to be the most accurate on suggesting words, just google HTC_IME mod and give it a try.
Other then that they are all the same for me, except that the stock GB keyboard is definitely the most responsive one.
Swype and swiftkey are a no-no for me, people just think they are faster but its just a new type of typing, something new. Typing with 2 thumbs is much faster then swyping with 1.
I tried Swift Key and Swype, nothing beats the stock keyboard, really zippy
Tried everything. Stock is the best, except for the occasional ddouble lletters.

I have tried a few also. Ever since gingerbread keyboard on the market came out it been my favorite. Don't see what's great about iPhone / windows keyboards? Same stuff.
My one gripe is the android keyboard sound. I hate it. I know better keyboard has the iPhone sound which is much better.
I'm using the gingerbread keyboard. I think is the best for fast typing...
thanks for all the responses and after fast texting with all the keyboards I find stock to be the fastest but it does still have some bugs like the double letters idk if any of you have experienced that but hopefully ice cream sandwich fixes that! (if we even get it haha)

Smart Keyboard Pro
Stock gingerbread is the best then the 2 best would have to be
HTC sense
I used to use stock Keyboard only
But one day Amazon App Store gave away Flex t9 keyboard app for free and I've been using it ever since.
You guys should all try it, I fell in love.
on an interesting side note, Nuance is the developer of the keyboard which is a company in which apple is interested in acquiring. not that I favor apple, but shows the quality of what this keyboard can be.
It's like swype + swiftkey put together
I just had to mention it since I guess I saw nobody else did.

A. I. Keyboard

I have used swype, swiftkey, t9, better keyboard, even that ridiculous rotary keyboard.
I am a keyboard geek (among other flavors of geek).
I gotta say, A.I. Type keyboard (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.aitype.android) is simply amazing.
It seems smarter than swiftkey and is completely customizable. (Background images, colors, layout, even keyboard type (iphone, windows 7, gingerbread among others).

I have to admit to being a keyboard whore. I have since early 2009 bought almost every keyboard out. I have better keyboard, perfect keyboard, smart keyboard, swiftkey long before it became the X version. I had been using Swiftkey until a few days ago when I tried the latest version of Go Keyboard. The predictions aren't as psychic as swiftkey, but the keying on Go Keyboard is much more accurate for me so I have to depend on correction and prediction a lot less. And, the correction is VERY accurate. As far as the keyboard in the OP, it looks like another gingerbread recompile. What makes it stand out from the crowd?

I love that it has themes and different sounds for space, tap, accept. However it doesn't do autotext which I cant function without now nor does it correct conjunctions and the comma is a pain. Promising tho
Loving it so far ..def promising ...

So far it seems decent. Predictions are good (for both what's currently being typed, as well as guessing the next word) and I like the how the long-press for period brings up the sub-menu of common punctuation keys.
In spite of it not being perfect, AI is certainly a beautiful piece of work.
I have been using it from ages......!!
The best undoubtedly among all

Gingerbread 2.3 i think its called. Much better then stock Samsung. Hate how that either has auto complete or if you turn it off then you can't select a word from the list.
SwiftKey 3, easily the best unless you like to Swype.
swiftkey 3 is best imo
A.I.Type keyboard. BEST hands down IMO
I love the jelly bean keyboard. Fast and free .. Do a search on the market.
its gotta be swiftkey for me. so much customization a great keyboard and easily the best prediction software out there. takes up like 17 megabytes of ram but the s3 handles that fine. swiftkey ftw imo

I was beginning to think I was the only one that hated the Samsung one. I like the plain old stock keyboard. Whatever was on my Bionic with the leaked ICS was a great keyboard as well.
Swype Beta, so much better than the stock keyboard.

I like the SmartKeyboard PRO ! it has hundred themes that can be used and nice dictionary for every language
Depends on what I'm doing. For longer thoughts and messages like this, I use Swype Beta since its by far the fastest form of typing on a mobile phone, but for other things like web browsing, I the use jelly bean keyboard. It's easier to type passwords and URL's.

Having always had hardware keyboards it never occurred to me that I could install a different one. Trying swiftkey now and it is several orders of magnitude better than stock samsung.
I'd be willing to bet any aftermarket keyboard is better than stock.

Best Keyboard to Me...
I feel the best keyboard is between the Go Keyboard or Thumb Keyboard.
Currently the new Thumb Keyboard is my favorite, I can't find any drawbacks except not able to use swipe.
The new Thumb Keyboard uses the new text as you talk feature that is embedded with ICS.
It just works so good and if you pay for it, you will see that it works very nicely with ICS.
Furthermore, it has clean looks and customization based off how big your fingers are and how you prefer to type.
Go Keyboard is nice because you can use swipe as well as a voice input option that works pretty good. (the main drawback is that it sometimes is glitchy when using google products and the adds if you haven't paid for the app)
Another vote for SwiftKey 3 here. It's been my standard for a long time now.
SwiftKey hands down.

Best, most responsive keyboard

Right now I'm using CleanROM. The keyboard it includes is pretty awful. I've replaced it with Kii, but - and I'm not sure if this is the keyboard or the ROM - the keyboard simply fails to show up on the screen for random 5-15 second intervals.
I'd like to replace the keyboard with something else. I really like the stock Android Jellybean and ICS keyboards.
Is there a way to get rid of the built-in keyboard entirely and replace it with the stock one?
i will never use any other keyboard besides swiftkey flow.
if you use your phone in landscape often, keymonk is interesting also.
Tried and didn't like the whole word prediction thing. Or swipe thing for that matter. I want something simple and barebones and fast/responsive as possible.
were the opposite lol. i only use swipe style keyboards.
hopefully someone else can give you a better recommendation.
before i switched to flow, i used the stock keyboard.

4.2 aosp or Swift key all the way.
Though I have to say that when I was on CleanRom I never had that much keyboard lag. Your installation may have issues especially if you restored apps using titanium.

I did not like swiping in the beginning much. Now, it is a must to have swiping capability. I found Swype beta to be the "best" right now, imo, just wish they have more themes to pick from. Or try Swiftkey.
I pretty much exclusively use a real virtual keyboard. Tops out between 65 and 70 words per minute. I just couldn't get down with the fake stuff.
The Gnote2 keyboard is pretty good.

There is a link in the theme forum to download. Just be sure to download the language before you try to open the keyboard, and don't install it with the ROM or you will be screwed upon activation. But once it's up, it's sweet.
