So, when the OP got Kitkat, he can dump the system (without root), provide it to us and we tell him, if he can root - win/win.

You can
gain root flashing SuperSU - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
To root can't you just unlock bootloader.
Download superSU to /storage
http://download.chainfire.eu/372/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.86.zip
Then download CWM and boot recovery (don't even need to flash it) using the following (apologies if syntax not 100%, I'm not at my laptop to check)
fastboot boot recovery cwmrecovery.img
Then just flash superSU via CWM.
You don't really need any special rooting 'tool'. Its just basic stuff.

I know that for booting simply recovery it s not need unlock bootloader. Only for boot recovery obviously, not flashing it permanently.

Tried both flashing CWM and just straight booting it and it just restarts the phone and doesn't boot into recovery. Also tried TWRP same results.

Please understand how *all* Nexus devices work. You are free to unlock the boot loader at ANY time and flash whatever you want. All the "One Click Root" scripts do is automate the following process:
1.) Unlock the boot loader (fastboot oem unlock)
2.) Flash custom recovery (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img)
3.) Boot into recovery and flash the su zip package (installs the su binary into /system/xbin and chmod's it appropriately)
No update will *ever* break this process. With an unlocked boot loader you can flash whatever the hell you want (boot, userdata, system, recovery) and there's nothing at the OS level preventing that.
These "one click root" scripts just prevent anyone from learning what is actually happening (when it's actually quite simple) and lead to 20 threads like this each time an OTA drops.

Sadly 2.3.3 DID break root without unlocking the bootloader for those people who didn't want to have to deal with having their SD Card wiped.
Ive used one click root before just never for the nexus. I am new to this phone & just want to get everything right.
So i can use one click root on 2.3.7 with no problems?
I am very familiar with root on my previous phone (evo).
Like i said i just want to get all the angles down pat before i attempt this. Thank you for your time.

That was never an intended function of fastboot for the device (to be able to boot a recovery) - it was a loophole that was closed. Unlocking the boot loader (and subsequently being able to flash whatever you want) is not going to be prevented.

Yes, it should - at least look here (from the sticky in the NS4G development forum) so you know what it's going to do: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078213
There aren't too many angles other than unlock your boot loader using fastboot (one command), flash a custom recovery (download it and flash it using one command) and then flash the su binary package. All downloads are in that thread.

Yes, it was a loophole but it was a nice loophole but you are correct. Nexus devices are the embodiment of Google's ideals for Android. There have been a number of google blog posts which state that Nexus devices are meant to be easy to unlock and install custom 3rd party software.
Hey guy's
I tried to root my HTC one S but after I unlocked the bootloader (boot loader is now UnLocked) , I couldn't run the SuperSu zip file because When I
open the recovery it shows a red message saying:
"this build is for development purposes only do not distribute outside htc with out htc write permission failure to comply my lead to legal action ."
i cant do nothing else with the device,he's stuck on that massage ":this build...."
all i can do is go to recovery mod and that's about it,cant find nor open the supersu zip file
does any one know what to do to repair this?
It sounds like you didn't flash a custom recovery. If you can get back into the bootloader go to fastboot and do that.

dude,i dont understand why your'e saying "put it on sdcard" i dont have a slot for an sdcard it's the one s

But seriously, If you're having these issues you don't need to root. Honestly after ics there really isn't any point . You cannot root with adb. fastboot is the best way to root It gives you the necessary tools and understanding required to not only root, but also fix your phone if you fubar.
Look for stickies in General
if you have drivers installed properly then extract this

download a recovery ( .img) and put inside that folder
open terminal there (shift+right mouse button>>>select open command prompt here)
reboot the nexus into fastboot mode, connect and type this
fastboot devices

and flash the recovery through fastboot

Yes if you're imeediately going to flash a ROM, no need to root your current rom. Just unlock the bootloader, flash recovery then from recovery flash a rom
Official CWM itself is pretty antiquated. The choice is between Philz advanced CWM (See signature) or TWRP and it is users preference really.

Btw I agree to some of what you said in other posts about rooting with adn without PC. Its great to be able to root easily but this in my opinion would make everyone root and stuff while I think rooting and Roms should be for android enthusiasts and what else.
Alright decided to go with cf auto root, pretty simple to go with and no need to flash recovery..

of course there is a way to root 5.0.1.
use fastboot to either flash a custom recovery (TWRP is probably your best bet), or use fastboot to just boot into the custom recovery without flashing. Either way, once your in recovery, flash SuperSU (download here http://download.chainfire.eu/641/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.40.zip)
done and done.

actually, it does work. with 5.0.1, I'm rooted. Except when I flashed 5.0.1, SuperSU v2.40 hadn't yet been released, so I rooted with SuperSU v2.37, and then updated via the playstore when 2.40 came out. but it definitely works with Lollipop.
p.s. you need to have an unlocked bootloader to install a custom recovery (which is what I suggested doing). So in fact, my suggestion is completely valid and 100% relevant. In fact, I had assumed that you already had an unlocked bootloader when I posted.

CF Auto Root and flashing the superSU2.40.zip in recovery both root android 5(0.1/0.2). Did it myself and confirming root access.
You can root with the same chainfires files for 5.0, and then you can update supersu and twrp

I have a rooted samsung galaxy s6 edge(At&t) version lollipop 5.1.1 that i rooted with Odin.
I have no custom recovery installed and my problem is that supersu does not work, it says that su binary need to be updated.
After searching google i could not find a recovery.img for my specific model number SM-G925A.
I need help if there is a way i can install a custom recovery or how to update su binary so i can grant root access to apps.
By the way i am a newbie in the rooting world.. so simple answers will be appreciated!

I want to check if my bootloader is unlocked or not , how can i check that? Even though 70 % i am sure it is unlocked but is there a way to confirm it?

I meant that you can try to place su binary in appropriate place manually and give permissions. See this tutorial for manual install section https://github.com/koush/Superuser/issues/216#issuecomment-38354585
If this not helped you need to reroot your device. Unfortunately, I do not know the other options, it is a pity that you have no custom recovery.
