i have a surface rt ( first generation ) running windows 8.1 ( i have a 64 gb sandisk sd card installed on my surface ( with all the pics, documents, videos, and music folders linked to the sd card ) today i decided do eject the sd card to install about 2000 songs from my laptop to my sd card, everything went normal, i finished coping the files , so i remove the sd card, and i put it back in on the laptop to make sure all the music was there, but i noticed that it never copied anything ( after spending 50 min for the songs to transfer) so i went to folder setting and unchecked DO NOT SHOW HIDDEN FILES, and there it was, a folder on my sd card called SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION , i tried to do a reset on the sd card put it gives me an error " couldnt be formatted , i dont mind loosing all the files on the sd card since i hace a copy on my laptop, i just want to factory format my sd card ...can anyone help me please
i tried taking full ownership of the forlder and sd card but it resets back everytime i open the sd card ,all i want to do is format the sd card, i dont care about the files inside since have a copy of my pics and music. I dont know what else to do, and dont want to throw away the sd card since its a 64gb card
im not even able to add files to the sd card its so stressing .

System Volume Information is a standard system folder that you will find on every partition of a modern Windows system. It stores things like recovery data. Did you even do a search at all? http://www.bing.com/search?q="System+volume+information"
Did you check the Music folder on the SD card to see if the files had been transferred there? Did you check the used space on the card to see if the multiple gigabytes that many songs would have taken up were consumed? Sorry if these seem like really basic questions, but I can't make assumptions here.
Format failing is weird, but the next step I'd try would be to un-mount the card. Use Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) or the command-line tool mountvol.exe (run CMD or Powershell as Admin) to remove the drive mapping, then try Disk Management, diskpart.exe, or the format command. Use the volume name if you need to (after un-mounting, there won't be a drive letter or mount point, of course).

If you can get the SD card on a non rt PC try out this tool: Official SD
The tool also works with flash drives.

so its my understanding that when you use apps 2 sd it stores them in the android secure file on my sd . now if thats wrong all together then what exactly is that folder for ? is it my titanium backup files ? Anyway my question is if im not relying on my apps to sd back up anymore i.e all of my apps are on my internal hard drive and the apk files exist in another folder on the sd card can i get rid of those files in the adroid secure folder on my sd card ? its taking up 7.5 gb of my 8 gb sd card so i have no room to add anything and half of the apps in there i already uninstlled from my phone but yet they still are taking up all the room on my sd card....

Just delete the folder. I would back it up first, just in case. If all of your apps are on internal storage, you should be fine.
If that doesn't work, move everything on your SD card to your computer and format the card. Then move whatever you need back to the card.
Hi folks,
I rooted my phone using the S-on / unlock bootloader with htcdev /superoneclick method. Now I want to move from the original 8 gig card to a new 32 gig card with a minimum of fuss.
Different threads say you can just copy and paste, or that you have to format your card.
Any advice?
FWIW I have some apps running on the sd card but can move them back to the phone or even delete them if necessary.

What you have read is correct!
I have also upgraded to a 16 GB card from the stock 8GB card.
Just as a precautionary measure, On your Windows PC make sure View System Files / Hidden files & folders option is set as visible.
Make sure you do everything with the card inside the Memory Card Reader.
Copy all your content from the old SD card to a folder on your PC.
Insert the new Card in the memory card reader on your computer.
Format your new SD Card.
Paste all the content of your old SD Card (that you backed up earlier in a folder) to your new SD card.
Insert the card in your phone, check for Pictures, Apps.... Enjoy!

No, din need to reinstall anything.
If you wish, you could transfer the apps to phone memory from your old SD Card before you begin the process.

I did have to reinstall Modern Combat which was a bit strange but then it remembered where I was in the game. Odd but no hassles.
That game may be a one off case. . . May be that's Y i suggested you to transfer apps from your SD Card to the Phone Memory before changing the SD Card.

Hi folks, well I have a 32 gig external sd card that I recently loaded several gigs of music onto for a road-trip I have to take in 3 days.
Tonight I went to copy some files from the internal sd (not the 32 gig external) onto my computer, and it behaved strangely, so I powered the phone off to try again. Once the phone rebooted, both the 5 gig internal sd, and the 32 gig external sd cards report as being empty with all free space available, everything is gone.
I can't run recovery software from windows on the card , because when I mount the card it appears in windows as a portable media device, not a hard disk, so no recovery software recognizes it.
Anyone have any advice as to what I might try, in order to recover my music directories? I'm thinking I might be out of luck.

Who is the manufacturer of the card? Is it generic? This is an issue with cheap SD cards. Sounds like it needs to be formatted. Most likely your data is lost. Sorry.
I put the sd card in my older motorola atrix that I just recently retired from service use, booted the atrix to clockworkmod, from there mounted usb storage, and windows did assign the sd card a drive letter - I was able to run a data recovery program (easeus data recovery) and in about an hour recovered all my music to my laptop. Some of its in lost directories etc, but mostly the original folder structure is intact - in any case i've got my music back for my road-trip.
Why the newer lg ultimate 2 i'm now using only mounts the sd card as a portable media device, I don't know, and for the moment it doesn't matter.

This had me thinking: if I was able to remove the sd card from the lg phone, and put it into the atrix phone, and recover/access the data - then what if for instance, you lost your phone, someone found it and put the sd card into another device/reader, and you had a titanium backup on that sd card- they restored the backup of some of your programs (complete with data)
wouldn't they then have access to some very private information of yours?
Hi Guys, yesterday i decided to reset my xperia z5 to factory defaults because i wanted to have it with the apps i use the most and remove all of the others that i didn't use that much. So instead of uninstalling the ones i didn't use, as i said before, i did a factory reset. Before doing this i decided that it would be nice to take out my sd card to copy some pictures, without remembering that i had my sd card encrypted with my fingerprint, so i did the factory reset (with the sd card out of my phone) and after that i noticed that there was a marshmallow update for my phone, i accepted the update (with the sd card off my phone) therefore when i moved all the sd files to my NAS and i put the sd card back in i saw that all the files that i had moved to my NAS where still there. after that i decided to format the sd card with my surprise of seeing a Windows error message of "windows cannot complete format", i did a low level format, formatted my sd card with disk part, etc. None of the things i did worked, Do you guys know what i could do to my sd card to delete all the files in it?

My SD card is set as adoptable storage, but it has gotten corrupted. It happened when I was copying files from my phone to PC via USB (ironically I was doing this to backup my files from my phone). Somewhere during copying, the phone virtually disconnected from the PC, and on my phone it said that it couldn't read my SD card.
Couple of things to note:
I'm using Lineage OS.
The SD card isn't encrypted.
When connecting the SD card directly to my PC, the SD card shows as two drives, D: and E:, with D: being accessible showing an almost empty drive of 29,4 GB (which is the full logical capacity of this drive), and E: inaccessible, requiring a reformat (no idea what E: is). On D: the folders that I can see are .android_secure, Android (with the sub folders data and media) and LOST.DIR. All folders are empty.
This SD card should be filled with data almost up to max capacity.
I haven't changed a thing to the corrupted SD card. I did not reformat, used CHKDSK or w/e. The only things that I have done is attempting to make raw copies with HDD Raw Copy Tool and R-Studio.
I've read here and there that it is (almost?) impossible to logically fix a corrupted adoptable storage SD card in that I could just pop it back into my phone to resume where I exactly left off. So I'm looking to recover as much data from the SD card as possible. I'm most concerned about recovering my Whatsapp folder (I haven't got a complete GDrive backup of this), but I'd prefer to recover everything else as well.
What must I do?
