I recently updated to 4.3 and when i turn on or reboot my device the first screen says Samsung and has an open lock at the bottom with "custom" under it. Anyone know what this means? Also going in to my files it says "emulated", is that normal? i cant recall before the update. Thanks for any help

I'm pretty sure the "emulated" thing is a new feature introduced in 4.2 which has to do with multi-user support.
The custom is probably from your flash counter being tripped. Triangle away from the play store would fix that.

The flash counter persists through flashes/ota's, so if you ever flashed a custom ROM/recovery, it was tripped. You need to reset it manually. Boot into download mode (hold volume down, home and power at the same time) and see what it says for your device stats.
It showed "bootlaoder ap swerv 1” that what you're talking about?

I tried to update from a rooted stock room. The upgrade downloads then reboots then suddenly goes into recovery and asks if I want to flash the unrecognized file. It will fail if you at yes and then gives you this. Any idea what to do?

I'm not sure if there's a different download mode screen in 4.3, but it it's the same there should be a big android symbol in the middle with "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!" underneath and a little menu in the top left that has all your device info. The flash counter is "custom binary download." Also if you made any changes to /system (i.e. rooting), it would say "custom" next to "system status"

You need to be at 100% stock MF1 to update, so you'd have to ODIN to a a stock MF1 unrooted or a previous stock/un-rooted ROM and take all the OTAs.

OK. Custom binary download is a 0. System does say custom, i kept superuser after update but it can't download binary or whatever and root checker says I'm not rooted. Superuser is also not uninstallable.

Yes you will. Do yourself a favor and wait for a rooted version. I didnt and am regretting it.
Why exactly are you regretting it? Did you download from the ota and it mess up the phone? Cuz i've tried flashing the 2.3.5 update in the thread that says link straight from google, and I go to flash it and it aborts. I even uninstalled rom manager but it didn't work. Am I doing something wrong?

Push in the power button and hold, then tap the vol + key. Your custom recovery is gone, that will get you into stock recovery.

You need to either delete or change permissions to 000 /system/install-recovery.sh. This file rewrites stock recovery upon reboot. If you get rid of it, your custom recovery will stick

I was rooted the ODIN way and had different roms (bean, synergy, and CM10) for the past 2 weeks. Today I lost 4g on all roms and could not get it back. So I ODIN back to stock thinking I get my 4G back but no luck, still stuck in 3G. I'm going to take it in tomorrow to see if I can get a new sim or a replacement.
Triangle Away app said I had 0 flashes. Anyway to check the flash count not being rooted? TIA
Restart phone while holding power+home+volume-down

You'll need to remove battery to get out of it when done. Alternatively, you can also look for triangle away app program on XDA and use that to show the flash count.

thank you boys. I have bought the Triangle Away app from the market to support the dev but that is for rooted devices. The ODIN/Download mode tells you of the count? Never new this, will try now.
edit: I don't see a count but the custom binary download says NO. Is that the count?
Yes. After 'Custom Binary Download' it will either say "NO" or "YES (x counts)."
Thanks. FYI, while in unrooted stock *2767*3855# fixed my 4G problem. This will reset to factory setting. The data/factory reset from the stock recovery didn't do it.
So, yesterday, I had a perfectly functioning, stock 4.1.1/rooted unit.
Got a little frisky and decided to try out Liquid Smooth. Flashed that through recovery (it's a 4.2.1 Beta 2) but forgot to do the bootlocker.
The latest LS has a Bluetooth sound problem that's pretty bad. So, I thought I'd switch over to CM10.1, their 4.2.1 effort.
Well, without the bootlocker in place, you can pretty much guess how that worked out.
So now, I've odin'ed a variety of roms and so forth; no clue what happened to my backup.
My main focus has been what I call the dunce-cap routine, of going back to stock and starting over.
The problem? I did that and now I'm stuck in roaming mode and my calls don't work.
I'm dead without this phone (considering how long I've been working on this, since 8 pm or so yesterday except for a couple of hours of sleep, I might be dead, period.) and I've got to have one functioning. It's so bad that I'm considering just trashing it and buying another one, even thought THAT would hurt.
Almost everything I try winds up either getting the yellow triangle or the odin fail.
Now, thanks to some help I've gotten here that focused me into understanding this total screw up is MY fault completely, I believe I know what has to be done.
The plan was to go back to stock, root and DO THE DAMNED BOOTLOCKER, then go back into CM10.1 and make some changes in subscribing to CDMA or something (don't have that in front of me this second) to get the phone part of the phone operational but I can't get there.
In the guide here I have completed step 1, flashing the factory image.
The next step is blowing me up. I have used the file I have for the Recovery: CWM6023TouchVZW.tar.md5.tar, maybe 4 times.
NOW when I try it, odin fails and the phone tells me "secure check fail : recovery."
And help would be appreciated. Before I feed this thing to my Doberman Cavalier Spaniel. Or something.

Yup. Completely stock rom is installed. The next step was installing the recovery... and using a file that I had used before, that's where I'm running into the problem of the secure check fail.
That very file HAS worked before, 3 or 4 times with no problem.
Why does the file end in ".tar.md5.tar"? It's supposed to end in ".tar.md5" Since owning this phone, I've never seen a file with ".tar" twice in the file name.

Update: OK... have gone through the guide which went brilliantly.
Now, do I just boot this thing into recovery and flash the CM10.1?
Is there anything I've overlooked? Anything else I need to do?
And do I do the factory reset/wipe dalvik and the rest before, or after?
I presume I have to use ezlock to unlock the bootloader again after this, right?
No, you still need to unlock bootloader and backup your IMEI. You may want to do quite a bit of reading, CM 10 is not as easy to fix some of the potential problems that you could possibly encounter.
I am not hating on them, but don't think it is as simple as one of the TW ROMS.

When I try this method to back up the IMEI it doesn't do anything after entering the *#7284# and if I hit the phone, it just sends me to a Verizon intercept operator.
The only reason I'm trying to get into a 4.2.1 ROM again was this:

Just flash cm10.1 and fix your mobile settings. CDMA subscription > ruim/sim and toggle airplane mode.

4.1.1 doesn't have this capability, and up to now, I haven't seen any other way to address the original issue.

Kind of a dumb question but I was wondering if I lock my bootloader (using ez unlock) and flash the Odin file in the subject line isn't it the same as using the ics file that automatically locks your bootloader? I need to return my phone to stock and have the blk3 file downloaded from previous adventures. Anyway, I'm on Cleanrom. Thanks for any help.

Okay, don't do that then hit reboot. It did lock my bootloader but when I rebooted the triangle of death appeared. Anyway, all is well and my phone is back to stock. I would suggest not doing it this way :silly:

Lol well that's the expected result when you lock the bootloader via EZ Unlock then reboot. You're supposed to Odin flash next and the yellow triangle warning let's you know, as a user, to Odin flash back to stock. That's perfectly normal.

Yea, that doesn't surprise me haha when I first got this phone I was flat out shocked about the speed coming from a Droid Incredible. I would say lighter roms like Cleanrom and Bone Stock would keep it quick. We are dealing with unofficial software after all. I prefer the rooted/unlocked lifestyle way too much to go back except to upgrade my partitions with OTA's though.

i think it does happen due to your binary going up but rooted the device gives it custom status, you would be unable to receive official updates if the device gets updated sometime soon. if you want to remove that your going to have to unroot it, flash the stock rom in odin again.
