You cant downgrade an existing windows instalation.
If you are trying to install XP on a formatted HD, be sure to use an USB 2.0 port, i had errors doing it thru an USB 3.0 slot.
Be sure to format your USB to FAT32, unpack the .ISO to it, and just that on the stick.
I do a lot installations for friends, and that is a good start...

Hmm... guys when you move from Windows 7 to Windows XP on most laptops you need to use Sata Drivers because Windows XP does not have these drivers ( of course if you have not already the option to select AHCI/RAID mode).
If you want to slipstream ( add ) Sata Drivers into Windows XP image installation you have to use "Nlite". The google is "full" with infos about this procedure.
May be some problem with DotNet framework
If you were me i would say install Linux but you are not me so here try this
Install vmware or virtual box And then install windows xp in it while still having 7 as host machine

You must access the official page of your laptop and search in driver list, must contain something like that in its name "SATA AHCI Controller".
I cant post links because I am a new user of this forum but you can search on google for "How to slipstream Sata Drivers with Nlite".

Yes just unpack them (with 7zip, winrar,...) to the root of the USB stick and boot from the stick
Sata drivers would be needed only on some older or exotic hardware
Did you try with some other iso, are you sure its a good one ?
Also, are the latest updates incorporated....(drivers have been added also in later builds)
I wouldnt go to far in checking for errors, if windows setup starts and finds your hd its ok.
If there are errors while installing its just because the installer can't find something....
btw: are you trying the setup from within windows or a clean install ?

I know, thats why i asked about the .iso used
If its dowloaded from somewhere, most likely the drivers have been slipstreamed.
and as stated in the OP he tried with a different iso and got different errors
and they are read errors.
So nothing to do with some driver

Yeah, I understand... these days it's hard to find a "celan and stable" Windows. A lot of friends ask me if I have one but most of time the .iso was touched and full of bugs.
Personally I use dual bot with W7 and Ubuntu 12.04.
It is good to slipstream yourself the drivers into a clean .iso if driver missing is the problem of course...
I have the drivers downloaded, but i install them after windows.

check to make sure you have windows media 11 or higher on your computer. I had that issue. Running XP I had an issue but Win 7 it installed easily..
This is what I used
Motorola_End_User_Driver_Installation_5.1.0_32bit.msi
MotoHelper_2.0.49_Driver_5.0.0.exe
Windows Media 11
Also search around on google lots of people have had this issue and thats how I found my answer.. Also xoomforums.com is a good site for answers as well
OK so I installed wmp11 and it will recognize my xoom thanks for the tip. however now I cannot get ADB to work my device is there I have every sdk ever made down loaded and I have the moto USB driver mentioned installed but I can't get into a ADB to save my life.

usb debugging needs to be checked in order for the adb to work.
i was trying to root my phone by following the guide from the FAQ
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545
and i got to the step:
point it to where you downloaded the Android SDK (..\android-sdk-windows\google-usb_driver)
Make sure to CLICK "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
Then from the list 3 choices select Android Bootloader Interface

yes i did point to the folder. both the parent folder and the various inner folders.
it works fine in usb mode when the phone is on.
they are the official google usb drivers is there another source for my Nexus S.
also for reference it is under other devices - android 1.0
do i even need that step?

is there another good guide i can follow? maybe there is a step i need to do before usb install? This guide assumes the usb drivers will come with the SDK but the only data the SDK tries to update is itself to SDK15 which the guide specifically mentioned not to do.

that has the same issue
i cannot get usb connectivity in for the fast boot mode
from the rootkit the when i plug in my device even after installing the universal usb drivers i think windows is installing something else. Thus stopping me from accessing it while in fastboot mode
Not really sure what to do here. USB debugging enabled and everything all the guides are pretty easy to follow and have the same steps.

nope didnt work
just so you know when i plug in the phone with debugging on i have 'android composite adb interface' installed
i have removed all the drivers from this computer previously. i can do it again though.
after installing pdanet i have 'android 1.0' pop up under other devices with an exclamation on it in device manager...i don't know if that is normal or not?
how do i know when this is working? i always try to run "oem fastboot unlock" which goes to "waiting for device" but will i no longer see the
USB control Init
USB control init end
??
It is the same issue of android 1.0 driver which i also faced in win8... You have to install android 1.0 driver manually from device manager

so if i go to install the drivers from the pdanet folder if i tell device manager to search the winusb folder it says "cannot find drivers for your hardware" and if i dont search and say have disk - i chose 'android device' then the file in android_'winusb' file but it says "specified location does not have information about your hardware"
so i cannot get it to work.
This is on XP and win7 (2 different computers). I prefer the XP one for this though

You need to download Android File Transfer on macs. I actually find it better than windows since I don't have to fiddle with drivers to get adb and fastboot working.

You have to be in the directory where adb is and use ./adb instead of just adb.
I would really recommend using this tutorial and getting everything setup where you don't have to do that every time.

I have Windows 10 installed on four PCs (two desktops and two laptops) without a single problem. PCs, I might add, that I have torn down and replaced various bits on...changed graphics cards, upgraded to SSD drives. All rock solid.
For ADB, use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790
It is small, pretty much fool-proof (every time I say that, someone proves me wrong) and has a support forum.
Hi folks. im currently unable to use adb in cmd, only fastboot. So if anyone can help me upgrade my usb drivers to use adb with my windows 10. My device is seen currently as Kedacom USB Device, Google, inc driver. Android Bootloader Interface is using Microsoft winusb.sys (driver), wdfinstaller01009.dll(control), winusbCoinstaller2.dll(control)which are Windows 7 (old) Those are the best Microsoft and Dell can provide.
I know theres h91810 (i) LG_UP.dll floating around but Tmo is anti-rollback. So H91810( j ) LG_UP.dll would be the goto file set (i hope) Btw, the (i) is corrupt anyways? File extracted had error showing for me while it was in the .zip
Either one of these will help me with progressing towards getting my device working
