[Q] Custom Hostapd.conf for cm 10.2-apexqtmo - Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G

Hello, I am typing this thread to ask the XDA community the following questions-
#1-Is it possible to port hostapd config from the Relay's stock ROM to the CM 10.2 ROM?
#2-If the above is true, then could it result in better or worse functionality?
#3-I have attached a PDF saved from a website that has the potential to explain this process, but it's a handful for even my brain and I need a little help breaking it down. It's 17 pages.
It essentially explains how to modify and what not to do when configuring hostapd.conf and its surrounding files and dependencies.
According to the similar threads list, this starter is one of a kind.
Please feel free to pipe in and help out.

Well, I actually liked my hotspot configuration and setup from 4.1.2 'BMC5, but I also enjoy the perks of CyanogenMod. I'm just trying to find a way to get the best of both worlds, if that's possible in this case.
in android 4.3, the hotspot setup is constricted compared to my stock ROM. But the disadvantage is that the ROM is bloated and I hate it for that reason. i had CM until recently, but plan to reinstate it on Christmas day after a disaster with my Wi-Fi amid other issues in a cm11 nightly.
I hope this answers your question, and it's certainly nice to get a reply from Team ApexQ so quickly.

In the end, T-mobile doesn't want to allow tethering freely, so the Stock Image is built around that -- This means that the methods in use between Stock and Cyanogenmod are essentially incompatible. Sure, you can go through a lengthly, 17 page process to hack it in, but to be frank, your time would be likely better spent getting us logs and descriptions of this 'disaster and other issues' with your cm11 nightly so that we can work on the problem, especially since using Cyanogenmod is your end goal Also keep in mind that nightlies are going to have problems from time to time, it's the nature of nightlies.

I understand, but...

About the t-mo tethering, I have a plan that perfectly satisfies me. I'm using it now. T-Mo was aggressive about this until about one month after I joined. (I joined 8/7/2013) They've become more flexible, and I am grateful, as I can use an unlimited data plan with my hotspot now. Combined with my UA Switcher, I can keep it longer.
Also, the code in the t-mo hostapd file is so simple, I chuckled. It's got only 8 lines of code. The CM variant has almost 3 screens or more of code. Please help me understand this difference.
Aboit CM11, I'm not going to get it. CM 10.2 is fine with me and my hardware/software items (BT Headset, apps, etc.) I am currently unable or unaware of the ability to create a log (yet). I'll read up on it.
And don't worry, I realize the nature and danger of nightlies more than ever, now. But you seemed to throw it in the bag with CM 10.2 (in a good way).4 Months for a stable? Genius efficiency! Let's hope you can do that for CM 11, too, then I'll definitely be on board!
Again, thanks for your replies.:fingers-crossed:

Another way of saying this is: We're not going to attempt to reconsile the differences between the CM config and the TW config. They're two different animals. You can try to drop in the config from TW on top of CM, but you're on your own. Thankfully, if you take a proper backup before starting, it should be easy to revert if this does break for you (And likely it will) The PDF you've posted is irrelevent. Linux and Android have moved on from the versions being discussed there.

What exactly do you mean by this?

Stock hotspots are always better and...
I mean that it has more features than cm. Examples include channel select, n compatibility (to avoid crossing BT wavelength) and a Mac address filter, plus the ability to know who's on it.
And, by the way I am back on cm 10.2, effective two hours ago. But I salvaged the WiFi folder from my old ROM. I'll attach it upon getting on my laptop. Also my dialer had failed to start. just can't win can I?

PS here is the attachment in zip form. It contains all the files (except wlan0 and the like) required for an awesome hotspot. Again, I will re-state that despite its history, T-Mo has eased on hotspot restrictions. I have a $70 plan with hotspot, by the way, and am using it to type this response.
Thank you for your interest!:good:

What you are looking to do then, is to use the T-mobile tethering app, which only works on TouchWiz, and only on the T-mobile tethering paywall. It, as far as I recall, uses Samsung specific frameworks, and cannot be ported As for the caveat you have listed with n compatiblity there, that's resolved in the CM-11 builds as near as I can figure what you're talking about. If there's a specific problem with with CM 10.2 or 11 you're trying to get fixed, get us logs. Google 'How to take a logcat', that should get you started.

Eureka, I've got a LOGCAT!
Here is the logcat. I do not know how long they are supposed to be, but since it kept going, i cut it off at at about one minute. If there is anything this can tell you (or me, for that matter), then I am grateful. I just hit "THANKS" to Mr.Gentleman for his picture-perfect help pages for installing the JDK and SDK.
Hope this works.

All right. If I cannot create a perfect hostapd file, can someone from Team ApexQ tell me how to safely edit the existing file in /system/bin/hostapd? There must be a middle ground somewhere.
Thanks so much for your feedback once again!
I hope Nardholio still isn't upset from earlier...I'd really like to hear from you again on this issue. I promise- no more irrelevant attachments!

[Q] Latest Stable Rom? [Galaxy S Relay 4G]

Hey guys,
With the communities help, I've rooted my phone, and have begun experimenting with roms, I'm pretty excited about all this -- but so far, I haven't found one yet that meets my needs.
The only roms I could even find are the ones linked to by this thread. But I can't comment there because I'm an uber-n00b. **** yeah, n00b status! XD
So here's some of the issues I'm having, maybe someone can point me in the right direction:
I'm using CWM to flash roms, and I can't flash the "Debloated Jelly Bean stock image" linked to in that thread, CWM tells me there's an error in the zip halfway through. Though if I do an "unzip -test" on it from the command line, it verifies okay -- so I'm guessing the package is either borked, or intended to be used differently than how I'm trying to use it.
That being said, I've had great success flashing the unofficial, and experimental Cyanogen 10.1s -- but none of them that I have tested have all of the features I want working. Is there a recommended version? The features I want are pretty basic things:
First and foremost: Wi-Fi tethering (I'd pay for it if T-mobile had an option for it, but they don't -- not on unlimited anyway -- and I always hit my data-cap even without tethering, if I went on a non-unlimited plan, it would cost me $20/more a month and for about the last 10-15 days of each month I'd be stuck on EDGE/2G -- to me, that's unacceptable.)
Being able to connect to Wi-Fi networks (obviously not at the same time as tethering, but I expect both to work).
GPS
Bluetooth!! (The latest "stable" the Unofficial 13-03-09 does not appear to be able to connect to my headset.)
The Stock Clock: Alarms App (Also seems to be broken in the 13-03-09 release.)
And obviously: Calling, Texting, Camera, Flashlight
Basic Battery Stuff (Latest "stable" and nightlies both have issues with determining if the battery charger is connected or not, reboot seems to fix it most of the time).
The one thing I don't use (that I know about) on my phone is NFC. I like the idea of NFC, especially to pay for things, I just have never bothered to **** with it to set it up.
So, Is there a list of the nightlies and like some quick indicators that say which key features are working or not? If not, I might be willing to set one up for the most recent ones (at least until I find one that has features that I want all working more or less). If this already exists though, it would be a great time saver. If not, is anyone willing to help me set this up? The testing will go a lot better with >1 person testing things.
I figure stock does almost everything I need except tethering, but I can't figure out how to get the debloated stock rom on, and installing the tethering fix for regular stock (or Cyanogen for that matter) just makes the phone not boot.
Thanks for reading, any thoughts / comments -- and even moreso: answers -- are greatly appreciated. [And hopefully, none of the above is taken as criticism to anyone, as it's not meant that way, clearly, I'm a little frustrated, but I'm also very much excited to be finally modding my phone, and it wouldn't be possible without all the community support that has gone into this development!]
DERP
OH MAN! I just flashed the MC5 modem; BLUETOOTH WORKS NOW ON THE UNOFFICIAL 2013-03-09 RELEASE!
I haven't tested everything yet, but pretty much everything seems to be working now it seems!!! :good::good::fingers-crossed::good::good:
Man, I wish this was all in a guide somewhere so that I wouldn't have to stumble around in the dark like this. :silly:

KitKat 4.4

Sssooo.... According to what I read last night, KitKat is supposed to be able to be usable on pretty much all Android phones, all the way down to those with 512mb of RAM.
Any thoughts as to whether the Charge is gonna get some love with this (certainly, I know, NOT from Big Red)?

Just because they say it could run on lower end phones doesn't mean it will run w/o lag and so on. I heard the chez won't be getting kit Kat so what does that tell you about the older phones.

The only thing that will run on lower end devices is the new launcher and Google apps. The new ui is supposed to be included in the new launcher and make lower end devices feel and look more like newer ones.

The problem with an upgrade to any newer OS on the Charge is the radios. I don't see KitKat and an exception.:crying::crying:
Interesting how they had it where you could use Hangouts as your default SMS App with all the Emoji smileys on phones with Gingerbread including the Charge on the leaked version from the Nexus 5. It was fully working and I tried it. However, now that it's released to everybody through the Play Store, the SMS option is for Android 4.0 Only.
just got kitkat on my razr.... wish I knew how to port, b/c then I would attempt to port this great ROM over to the old Charge....
I'm interested in doing a CM11 build for the Charge or atleast a CM 10.2 build. I have a Galaxy S4 now but I would love to get some use out of the charge. I just want to turn it into a kickass media player since the RIL situation is never going to get solved. If anyone knows what is involved to make this happen it would help me greatly. I've never built CM before. I've read the CM developer wiki. A lot is over my head. I am trying to learn though

I think you're on the right track, though I think I'd stick with CM11 rather than CM10.2.
Well I am really interested in learning how to build. So I think I will run a few builds for the Fascinate and then see what I can do for the Charge. My programming experience is intermediate. I feel confident I can learn the process and at least get a semi functional kitkat build up and running and then maybe others could help work out the bugs

good luck brother... i'd be glad to test for ya.
some tips that you may/may not already know:
my understanding is that OS 4+ require EXT4 rather than RFS, so it might help to start with a kernel that allows this conversion. there are a few floating around that work.
someone (JT) has successfully (and I guess relatively easily) ported ICS and JB to the charge, the key aspects not working though were mobile data and camera.
I'm told the key road block is the RIL for the kernel in order to get those aspects functioning properly.
as for me, I'd be happy with just a working camera, as the Charge is used by my son as a WiFi-only media player/gaming device. he likes to take pictures/videos, so this is the only thing preventing me from converting it the latest JB port.
again, good luck, and let us know how the progress goes!
Well I just started a new job and am settling into that so time will be scarce for a bit. I wouldn't even know how to start with the RIL. I would definitely want to get the camera working provided I can even successfully build CM11. I want to make it clear that I am new to this so it is a big undertaking for me and I have a lot to learn. Once I get a build enviroment set up I will see if I can make some fascinate builds for practice since it is very similar to the charge. Then i will reach out to sbrissen or jt1134 and see if they can give me any pointers. I forked their code on github already.

OK, I've got one that's been bugging me. I have a LOT of apps installed and if I have moved a number of the larger ones to the SD Card (to free up /data), once I get to greater than 1GB in android_secure, my phone fails to boot completely and just locks up. It's not the SD Card (32GB Class 10) that has errors (scanned with both Windows and 4Ext), just seems to be too much for the OS to handle.
I'm still running ShiftHackedA05P 2.8 (CM 2.7.3) from days gone by. Suggestions welcome. Thanks.
Edit: And I use Autostarts (Advanced mode) to turn off receivers for apps that I don't want to load, and LBE to disable permissions.
You might try using a Rom that has ext4 support since it supports larger file sizes.

Thank you for the reply, expert one
The folder has ~87 files of sizes 3MB to 40MB, which causes the lockup after booting at random times (sometimes it makes it further and ultimately boots, after MANY battery pulls). Once the folder is pared down to a lesser total size, the phone boots more rapidly and doesn't lock up; seems to be a linear relationship between how many files and the total time to boot until the CPU usage drops.
It might also be that most apps are moving away from app to sd since it isn't used as much anymore.

New issue, perhaps?, I am noticing that when LTE/CDMA mode my connection is showing as LTE only where it used to use ehrpd for transport and thereby still keeping 3g radio enabled. Normally no big deal but at times I am unable to send/receive texts or make/receive phone calls. Has Verizon stopped using this middle transport for LTE? I am unsure why I am always showing LTE only and if this is causing a problem. Switching to CDMA (auto prl) is the only remedy that I have found. Any thoughts?

Not really a problem but I noticed a thread that mentioned A LOT of older devices getting a port of KitKat...any chance that could happen with this old relic? Other HTC phone with some sort of working KitKat are: Sensation, Desire HD, Vivid, Raider, Evo, Amaze and Incredible S...or at least that is what this site claims.
Oh, sorry, I'm new here so I can't post the link.
Santod was working on a KK ROM but since he has newer devices as many of us old bolt users do he puts it on the back burner because the demand for it just isn't there anymore. Be patient and maybe eventually you will see one. Or you won't....

I just saw where Droid Incredible 2 has a fully functioning CM 10.1 rom. Just wondering if that could be possible for us since DINC 2 has same processor, same resolution, same manufacturer, same everything except 4G. I'd love to have CM10.1 if it meant sacrificing 4G (or even all data).
I'm new to all this, but if you think a port is possible or maybe some other way to get this on our device I will give it 100% effort.
If it can't be done then crush my dreams now and I will somehow learn to live without my TB.
Thanks.
Porting the dinc2 ROM breaks data for the bolt since the bolt has an svdo radio setup. I have ported from it before and I either had calling with no data or just data. I'm not saying it couldn't be done but it is out of my area of expertise. Go to infectedrom. com and there is a cm10.2 build made by Santod that has working WiFi. Since data doesn't seem to be an issue for you.

It could be closed for any number of reasons. Cjen isn't a developer by any stretch of imagination. He's the same guy that kanged CM, and liquidsmooth code in the past in roms he called "liquidsmooth remastered", etc. He basically kangs roms, adds and removes apps, then rereleases them himself as though he built them, all without providing the source that would show no commits made by him. The irony is, liquidsmooth 3.2, CM7.2, And thundershed actually worked perfectly for the most part, his so called rom doesn't... If you're interested in gingerbread AOSP roms for the bolt, i'd stick with thundershed and liquidsmooth. At least workshed's and team liquid are real developers and their roms worked...

Lollipop, KK, Ics, JB, TW, AOSP, CM, Recommendations, & Opinions for a dying Device

Lollipop, KK, Ics, JB, TW, AOSP, CM, Recommendations, & Opinions for a dying Device
Well I haven't seen a general lollipop thread so I wanted to start one. The Pub seems like a nice place but since there's so much talk on there about everything in general, info could become hard to find. I do like the pub and read it every so often.
That said. I may or may not update the op with links posted. But most know where to find things if they look hard enough.
What I've found so far are AICP, Liquid, Mastamoon's CM, and a Slimpop build. I've tried AICP and Liquid. Thus far I've not been impressed with Lollipop, to each their own though. It looks okay, seems to run great, (I didn't do any benches, rather relying on the seat of the pants feel), I realize our device is getting at the age where not a lot of further development may happen. But it's still one of the few newer phones that you don't have to jump though hoops to install a rom.
What I'm asking if anything, is what have you tried, and why do you like or dislike it. Again, I know it's early especially for the d2vzw, but builds are out and are fairly stable, on AICP I never had a single reboot that I can recall. I'm going to try the latest Liquid tonight. I don't understand the new DD layers or whatever it is. I think it's a new way of theming possibly used by slim and maybe now liquid since I think they're using slim as a base now according to their thread in original development.
I'm backing up my favorite KK build now. Don't know if I want to try slim first or liquid. Both have builds dated 02-07 and 02-08 respectively.
If you dislike it I assume you're still running KK, or JB. In this case, I'd like to know if you're running a custom TW JB rom such as alliance or Moar or Wicked or anything else. And why. I am in an area where signal is ****. And although I'd imagine TW should get better signal, I'm not seeing a huge difference here. Maybe if I could get 3-5 DB/m better I'd stay on TW JB, but I'd have to make some measurments first. Signal on Lollipop seemed better but it can't be because I'd assume they're using the exact same RIL as on KK. Again, if I'm wrong on any of this please fill me in.
If there is another thread to follow that has already addressed all this let me know. I'm loving lollipop but can't find one namely AICP my current favorite that's releases regularly besides Masta and liquid, that have camera and video working if you have lollipop installed with these things working please share. I've tried freezing camera, then installing OPEN CAMERA, VIVAvideo, CM Camera FIX w/ the added apk for resetting the camera drive without a reboot to no avail. And I can't seem to make VIVA default to 640*480, maybe it does it on it's own but I've looked though all the settings I can find and can't seem to figure it out for the life of me. I've read damn near every thread and q&a thread to no avail.. I didn't read Masta's in it's entirety because it's so dang big. But I did browse the last ten-twenty pages or so. Once you stop keeping up for a few day's you're just lost... Which is what I wanted to make this thread to try to shed light on things without beating anyone up, and without downing any dev's they all make these things possible.
SO PLEASE if you don't mind let me know what rom has worked for you, with camera and video working and what you did to get it going.. WITHOUT STEPPING ON ANYONE"S TOES if at all possible. Thanks and have a great day/night/evening/morning.
Ain't getting a bite. Oh well. I saw a post about the slim ROM like a day later. Haven't ran it but that post has detailed data on what works and what doesn't in the op. I did try the newest liquid from 02-08 I think and it ran fine. I couldn't find how to change which settings though. A lot of features were there some weren't. Tried AICP same deal except I found the quick settings modifier in this one.
Both ran very well but I did use dkp's excellent kernel. Tierservative governor and clocked at 216-1728. Using his voltages.
I did try sending a text with liquid and I don't know if it went or not. I had read receipts checked but didn't get one. Someone else had this same issue in the liquid thread.
I'm back on KitKat but will n be testing new builds as I find them. Please give the developers some love and support or if you can donate. These guys work on this for fun and experience and some are in college. I've never known many wealthy college students. I was thrilled to have a case of naddy light or ughhhh beast ice.

I ran LS and mastas LP roms and loved em both on my S3 (I still have it even though I upgraded) and while I was impressed with the rom itself in both cases the battery life for me at least was horrendous. I've since learned a lot about wake locks and having too many apps can be a bad thing. I'm running slimkat on the S3 currently but I think I might just try out another LP rom seeming how it's only a wifi device now

Thanks. I think my battery may just be getting old but I do have a few wake locks. If your using the s3 as WiFi device then use airplane mode to help battery. Turn it on then turn on WiFi. That should help your battery life a lot. At least on my dx2 it does.

Out of curiosity what did you upgrade to? I'd love a nexus six but I'm not sure they'll work with CDMA networks or a new moto. Since my old motos DX and x2 are bullet proof. Built like tanks. But I need to get something that'll let me scratch the flashing itch.

Yeah I really can't afford one, but unlocked devices from major carriers seem to be few and far between. I mean without jumping though every hurtle out there to try to root and rom and device is getting harder and harder these days..
On the lollipop note, I really want to run it and have received advice from various forums on how to get the camera and video to work using A better camera, which i haven't tried, to open camera which i did try, and vivavideo which i just couldn't get to work for me at all. I might try another tonight maybe liquid maybe CM, I'd try Slim which was once my absolute favorite, until I used nameless. It had the features I wanted with none of the bloat I didn't.
I've been trying every aicp that I can get my hands on but have yet to get the camera or video to function.. Of course lots of people are useing Mastamoons CM and he probably has the biggest following of all the rom's out there at the moment. Maybe I should give that a whirl just to see how things fare with using the camera and video. But I can't imagine that other dev's haven't picked up on his tips, tricks, and cherry picks to include in their own roms to make them work just as well, but then again, maybe they're going their own route.
My question to everyone is which rom are you running lollipop that is, that have both camera and video working... Any kind of camera and video. I'm not too worried about resolution at the moment as far as video is concerned as I understand it, VIVAvideo only works at 640-480, but I can't for the life of me find a setting in there to get it to work.
I've found an app on the app store called cm camera fix or similar that is supposed to get things going without a reboot using another apk called camera reboot or simlar, but didn't have much luck with either.. Again, this is using AICP which I love. If anyone can suggest a rom and I've read through all threads except for the massive mastamoon thread, please do so. and please share your experiences
your not so on the spot op

People seem to forget our builds are still alpha builds. Its unfortunate, but the truth. Doesn't seem like we will get any unofficial love until the camera API problem is hacked & working. My favorite devs aren't building for our phone yet because of all the camera issues. Hopefully these issues will be resolved before I get my new phone. Looks like I'll be making the switch back to HTC

Sadly there aren't many devs left for the VZW S3 either. A lot of them have moved on. Now that mine is only a wifi device I might just run a LP rom on it. It runs pretty well on my N5, I've yet to have a random reboot which is great

Thanks guys, yeah dev's are getting few and far between and many don't use the device and rely on users for feedback and logcat's and debugging information.
Here's something I posted in AICP and thought I'd post here as well.
Just an FYI. Using suggestions from here and other threads, I've been able to successfully take both photos and video. I used A better Camera as suggested by Pyrite123 so thanks for that suggestion. I first uninstalled the stock camera using ROM Toolbox, I'm sure Titanium would do the same or just removing the apk. Anyway, after doing this and installing A Better Camera (Which is quite nice I must say), and VivaVideo I was able to both take pics and record video. I do not care for VivaVideo, but ABC wouldn't take video... Been thinking about trying LG Camera, this used to work with all else failed back on the DX when dev's were trying to get the camera working on a particular build. LG Camera includes LG camcorder.
On another note, having used DKP, BMS, and KT kernels for sometime now I was afraid those may be inferfering with getting the camera working. Not the case. I've used DKP which should probably be updated to something newer since it's from around the middle of Jan. I like it because of the stock undervolting and many governor options. I usually underclock using the stock voltages to 216-280 and sometimes up to 1728 down to 1350 on the high end. depending on what I feel I need.
Another thing, I noticed my KitKat Rom wasn't locking GPS so I re-installed a stock based rom to get a lock as has been suggested a zillion times over a zillion builds and roms.. Getting a lock in Alliance Rom 23, then immediately installing AICP fixed gps locking.. I got 6 sats locked inside my home tonight with a metal roof, and a huge metal shed outside. I'm certain I could get 10 or more standing still outside.
Just wanted to update and say thanks to not only the AICP dev, but all dev's who are and have been working on lollipop for this device.
Shapesblue mentioned on his GN5, I too have never had a single reboot. Which is one reason I've been so hell been on getting the camera and video working somehow someway.. It may not be working correctly, but it's working.
Looking at masta's thread, it looks like his next build will have the camera fixed. I guess we will wait and see.
Thanks sjpritch25, I saw that. Something about PA having it working but not having anything in Gerrit or something and them possibly just including a third party camera.
My camera works most of the time. I'd say 80-95% of the time.. Yesterday I installed the latest AICP just because it was there, did the camera freeze, and Sometimes Open Camera and A Better Camera would work and sometimes not. usually using the Camera reset apk linked in the CM Camera Fix app in the Play store fixes it in a jiffy so that I can take photos again. I think I even used the front facing camera on one app, don't remember which one. And since another user suggested trying Camera Zoom FX I did that and it worked as well as the others.. All in all the pic's turned out fine with flash, and although one user mentioned that using flash screwed up their Torch Tile in Quick Settings, I experience no such issue.
I had a crazy issue where hangouts would crash and burn horribly upon launch. After installing the latest release, I didn't restore my version from TiBu instead installing it from the play store, and all was right again in the universe.. Again, I'm using the DKP kernel from 01-10 or so what seems like ages ago, but it works and as I've mentioned I like the stock voltages, governors and being able to underclock on the low end, and overclock on the highend if necessary.
Just wanted to report in.
Question, and I should read the BMS thread for this and the G+ community, but Ed has released a couple kernels and I think they're for lollipop, I can't confirm this because nothing in the name of the file says anything about it, but it does say 34, so perhaps KK uses the same version. I just checked and those kernels will probably work, looking in about phone in LP, I see that it's still a 3.4 kernel so I'd say, but I'm just guessing here, that the BMS kernels will work at least the ones release after the date he mentioned including CM12 stuff. Maybe they'll work with both KK and LP. And I'm almost 100% certain this is the case but YMMV. Don't come looking for me if it doesn't.. I'll try one whenever I decide to try another build. I'm itching to try Slim, always loved slim I have, And I reckon RRO Layers are supposed to work theoretically according to the OP. But even though I've read up on that next gen method of theming, I'm still in the dark and need to just dive in I suppose and get my feets wet. I know "feets"
I was on aicp, but flashed mastas build to test the camera. I wonder if PA had video working too? Open camera works great with the latest build. Still no video
I WANT YOUR VOTE!! Opinions Wanted! Not spam... LOL

Latest Build of what? PA?
As one might have noticed I've changed the thread title. I know a there are a ton of resources about how to do this or that, and listings on what's available for Big Red's S3. Which I will probably own for the forseeable future. I have been unemployed for over a year now, Have had prospects on a few good well paying jobs, but they didn't pan out (One Network Admin Position, I should have landed easily, but didn't have the pull of the board like the other person, but I digress)
The S3 thanks to the hard work of a lot of developers and the community has had a great and exciting life. Hopefully people will continue deving for it well into the future like the DX, or the S2 etc.
My S3 runs great on most any rom I install be it TW, AOSP based, JB, KK, and now pretty dang good one Lollipop. The only problem for me with lollipop is that the moga universal driver doesn't work with L-Pop. This has been noted in the thread, but I don't know if any more work will be done to fix it. So I'll probably go back to TW or KK or JB.
I went from AICP which I have to admit is progressing nicely with their L-pop build. But since the moga universal driver doesn't work I'm going to use something else. And I've got that itch to flash something new again. All the KK's I've ran have been pretty dang good, SlimKat, Carbon, Liquid, Omni, and others but I've always stuck with nameless for whatever reason. Well, one reason is the adjustable timeout to kill apps via back button. Kinda like MIUI used to have.
My question is, for those of you who've flashed a lot of toms and can remember the details because it's all about the details. is what rom did you like the best and why.
Also aside from the massive drawback of not being able to install AOSP roms, is there any benefit to being on the TW 4.4.2 or 4.4.4? I can't remember which one they releaased. Some of the TW roms, Alliance, Moar, and Wicked are great roms and have a nice selection of theme's available. They run pretty good and are running JB.
The JB/KK, mostly KK, roms I've ran run absolutely awesome, I'm currently working on eliminating the play services wakelock without loosing much or any functionality, some say you can use the privacy manager (a big plus for Slim, Nameless, and Other users) to block the app staying awake. I haven't tried to use DS battery saver, Greenify, or many of the other zillion "Install me and I'll magically double or triple battery life using a method called "Using the Force!" At least that's what most ammount to or killing off apps blah blah blah.
Some users I've noticed are Die-hard TW fans and some Die-hard AOSP fans. I strongly lean toward the latter. I like being able to theme my rom I sil love MrDSL's Mixer series and DustinB's Cobalt series. With the new Lpop Roms this isn't possible. I have used the theme manager with CM12 themes in lpop but they're all flat and I don't care for that I do like aesthetics, but to each their own. Maybe the new flat method of lpop makes for better battery life?? It certainly makes for a duller looking rom. I do like the all black ones with white text however. Even they get old compared to the themes for CM7-11.
And TW roms are almost, and I stress almost as themeable as the the older CM varients. So many combinations of this or that and the Ultimate Icon Them or UIT is pretty slick IMHO. The themes for Wicked are almost as Wicked as the ROM itself.
If you made it this far, or just skipped the middle, congradulations you win.... well an opportunity to help myself and others answer a timeless question... Not the chicken or the Egg question.. Not Are we Alone in the Universe, Not is there a God and is he a nice guy, But rather you can help myself and others by giving reasons as to why you prefer one rom over the rest.
Please be detailed or as detailed as possible. Most who are in these forums know the jargon or should, and if not it's past time to learn.
Oh I've posted extensively about the 03-15 ish to 03-25 ish AICP if anyone wants to hear how things are going with that rom. It has quite a lot of the old features many of us miss and now includes the option to adjust the delay in killing apps too a'la Nameless and MIUI (I know the older MIUI did this on my X, DX that is)
So go on kick off your shoes, put your feet up, and write a post about why your running what. I've asked this in the past but opinions change sometimes quicker than it took me to write this short story as one guy used to tell me. Oggie I think it was..
Before I run, I wanted to wish Mastamoon all the best in his future Nexus 6 endeavors. That's probably my favorite phone at the moment, since I used to want a note anyway. SO thanks Masta for all those builds, cherrypicks, news, and releases you whipped up for us over here in Big Red Country, (NO not China, but rather VZW China's more Capitalist today anyway), I've left Verizon for an MVNO called Selectel because of their 15 dollar a month plan using big red's towers, but they don't offer data roaming. Here it's either Big Red or a Regional Carrier (which is probably more expensive than Big Red).
To read my massive off topic thanks to mastamoon press teh magical button.
Since I got way off topic, Here is is: THANKS MASTAMOON for all the work you've done the past few years working for free or next to free I hope someone bought you a beer or beverage of your choice. I can't afford a KitKat right now.. ha ha bad joke.. But thanks man, THANK YOU and thanks again to everyone who's worked on building and maintaining ROMS for this aging device. I for one appreciate it to no end. I used to be a distro hopper, I still am (remember the Mitch Hedberg [RIP] Joke?), I'm still a distro hopper but using Android Distro's for my phones. One an aging DX2, A DX with a screwy, Screen, and my baby the S3. Thanks to the community too, because without their feedback, bugs and stuff may never get solved, and many people wouldn't get the help they need, and just give up with their phone soft-bricked.
So one more for the road Thanks to the Dev's, Thanks to the maintainers, and Thanks to the community. Many don't thank the community enough but I can remember back in my DX says which I was a bit younger but still eager to learn all I could about Android and Customizing the DX. Without the community, I wouldn't have had the guides that get stickied, I wouldn't have got out of my softbrick situatiiiions, my re-activation woes which by the way, with the help of RazorLoves, I was able to re-activate at home which I was told by Big Red that I needed to drive 45min to one hour away to activate because the only towers in my home location and surrounding area belonged to Appalachian Wireless, a more expensive than big red regional companuy, Razor gave me the codes to get into the stock dialer to program the phone. Just one example out of many where the community has been very vey helpful. Kinda like the Dev's are the Doctors in the operating room, the Anesthesiolgist and nurses are maintainers and builders, with the other nurses and guest docs being the community. Probably a terrible analogy. But really. thanks to everyone involved on there. Just wish they got thanked more often and users didn't haggle them about stuff like "when will this be fixed" or "how much longer on the new build" "Rom X dries my dishes while yours only washes and scrubs them", "Rom X is better then Yours" Crap like that gets on my nerves. I'm sure my massive posts and continuous thank yous get on some peoples last nerve, But I'm trying to work on the massive short story length postings. I could care less about what people think of the latter, because the least I can do is thank someone for their hard work.
Back to the rest of the story. Let me know and others for that matter, why you've settled on TW and if yor're on TW, which build and why. If you're on another custom AOSP rom, again, why? What makes it better than any others., and if you're on the new KK locked down one why unless it was an acccident. Because I've even considered takeing that route but I doubt it's that much better than TW4.3 plus there would be no way to go back to lollipop or KK built from CM or AOSP.
I already know most people will say try them out and see for yourself. That's just it. I've tried 95% of the TW stuff, and almost all of the aosp/cm based roms. From Slim which was my DD for a long long time. Slim and I had a serious relationship but we broke it off because after JB she quit doing a few things she used to be able to do very well and I needed them only for my own pleasure. I know not funny, but true.
Just looking for others opinions, whethers its about battery life, signal (I live in a rural area with little signal if any), performance, looks, stability (of the OS not apps), if the Camera/Camcorder works well, so on and so forth.
Thanks for reading something that contained little to no information Also, if you use Xposed, which modules do you use and why?
Thanks in advance, I'll be checking in every day or two until I get my new work schedule.

LineageOS 14.1 for N920C installs on N920P just fine. Now, how to address cellular?

Howdy friends!
I was able to install the SM-N920C Lineage-14.1 ROM by RaymanFX on my SM-N920P Sprint device.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/orig-development/rom-lineageos-14-1-t3572047
To make it install I simple unzipped the ROM, and edited the file "META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script" and remove the top line that starts with "assert". This line is basically the part of the script that makes the ROM abort in TWRP if your device isn't nobleltejv. Then I re-zipped the contents of the ROM, pushed via adb and flashed per the instructions in RaymanFX's thread.
It seems to run really well -- it seems more stable than the CM 13 ROM that I tried previously. However, like the CM 13 ROM, cellular doesn't seem to work.
I got a good deal on this device primarily for hacking on it, so I don't mind trying some things (although I'd prefer to avoid bricking it). My only limitation is that I am a GSM user so I can't test full CDMA functionality while I go. That being said, I don't mind grabbing a cheep prepaid CDMA SIM if I actually make any progress.
I'm looking for resources on how to diagnose why cellular doesn't work. I'm fairly new to hacking on Android, but I'm an experienced software engineer and have a strong Linux background, so I'm pretty confident that with docs I could get to the bottom of this.
If anyone with more experience in this realm can point me at the appropriate docs/examples/forums etc. I be happy to take a swing at it.

Not a bad idea. I don't really have time to be a project maintainer right now -- hoping if I make progress I can just submit a patch against Rayman's work and occasionally make any needed updates, but I don't really know how ROM projects are typically managed.
Like many folks on XDA, I love Samsung's hardware but don't care for their implementation of Android. I generally prefer something closer to stock like Lineage or AOSP. Sprint doesn't get a lot of love (although Moar is a pretty nice ROM) and I'm sure those folks who prefer something closer to stock would benefit.

I completely agree. I have no complaints. MOAR is an excellent ROM. I would like to run Lineage or an AOSP ROM just for a change, but I knew from the beginning what I was getting myself into.
I'm not sure what all needs edited, but AFAIK the RIL needs to be. How or what needs to be changed is beyond me.

Moderator: should this thread live in one of the development sections?
Had a quick exchange with Rayman. He seems like a nice guy!
My objective is to get the modem working to some degree, but no promises about things like proper CDMA configuration, band selection, etc. Not really sure how all that stuff works, TBH. If I can get he modem to go, though, maybe someone who actually knows a thing or two about wireless can help with the other stuff?
Seems like the first order of business is to discover what modem hardware this thing is using, and what drivers it wants. I'll need to get root and dig around in sysfs/devfs. I'll post what I learn.
My day job is as a web developer and I'm an embedded hobbyist. Many of the ROM devs on XDA seem to work as embedded developers in their day jobs. I expect this to be a slow-going learning project for me in my limited spare time.
I'll do my best to document my progress (and foibles) in this thread in case anyone can learn a thing or two from it.

It seems like talking to him has steered you in the right direction!!! Take your time. If anything you'll learn something that you can apply later in your career or personal projects!
Have u tried flashing the sprint modem?
@jnovek if you could provide the zip you put together to flash I would try something in my spare time to help. Doesnt seem to be a very busy thread.
Long time no chat. I've been busy .
Could someone post the output to "getprop" from a stockish Sprint device on 7.x? Among other things I'd like to see what magic incantations are used for the ro.telephony settings.

Not totally sure how to use the hosting that everyone here uses and I have limited time this morning to play around w/this, but I can give you brief instructions on how to roll it yourself. It's super easy.
1) Download the n920c rom linked in the first post.
2) Unzip it.
3) Edit the file "META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script".
4) Remove the first line -- it starts with "assert". You can just straight up delete it.
5) Zip everything back up.
6) Flash using the instructions provided in the linked thread for n920c.
Any headway here?

What that mean "No service tho"
It means the RIL and APNs need to be edited and added I believe.

S Pen works?
I flashed the rom, but S pen is not working anymore. And has anyone figured out how to set up the network?
The developers of the ROM are working on it. But as of now this ROM is not for our phones unless you're going to only use it on WiFi. Cellular connections of any sort are out of order.
