non rooted Nexus 5, how's your battery ? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how's your battery doing guys when you go heavy use with this phone ? with or without wifi.

My battery is doing well, thanks for asking
Sent from my Nexus 5

before i rooted i had great battery life. Unless your playing games for a while with the screen on full brightness. I saw about a day to a day and 1/2

Rooting alone does not make a bit of differences to your battery life

Um y'all know that rooting has nothing to do with battery life, right?

My battery life increased 10 fold after jailbaking my phone...

I get 4 hours screen on time with average use
Total on-time varies with what I do. Could be 10 hours could be over 24
I'm usually listening to music, texting, playing the DS emulator, browsing, or just social media
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app

so anyone ever reached the phone from fully charged with standard SOT 3-4 hours from your nexus 5 and the battery still runs good ?

For me the key about the N5 battery life is two fold;
1. It loses very little juice on idle, even with all of the radios on.
2. It charges exceptionally fast.
Now, if you run screen brightness up and use google navigation the battery can go fast. Real fast. But for me, what is important is that if I know I am going to be away from the charger for a while I can easily tweak my behavior to get me there.

Verizon battery life

Want to get an idea of battery life with Verizon LTE on the S3. When voting in the poll please include the following of what type of user you are 1) heavy user 2) moderate user 3) barely use the phone aka mostly on standby.
I'm interested in the screen time on, not standby, and only those with LTE access.
heavy user days I get twelve hours
moderate days 15
not at all 2 days.
Heavy user I get 12 hours with 3-5 hours talk time and heavy Internet usage about 2 hours, 14-16 if I cut my talk time and Internet usage down 30% . my rezound with extended battery would last longer larger battery obviously, I think the s3 would have even better battery life if the antennas were better they are very poor compared to my rezound which makes a difference in battery life. But all in all there is noticeable difference in battery advancement with s3 I hope all phones will have battery life like s3 and better

Moderate days, after 16 hours, I will have 45-50% remaining. (Approx. 2.5 hours screen time)
Low usage (mostly standby), I will have 85% remaining after 16 hours.
I don't use FB though.

I am a new GS3 owner I am curious if these are stock battery figures or with Extended batteries?

I'd say I'm a heavy user. If its fully charged before i go to work, i dont need to charge it until after i get home(8 hr work day) and i usually plug it in at 10%. 4g, internet, Facebook, YouTube, Kindle, a lot of Google Talk. BUT I do have my screen brightness set extremely low.
Get about 18 hours. Moderate to heavy with screen on 2-2:30. Use phone for some calls, texts, check email, browse Internet, some games on occasion

If you're only interested in screen-on time, then the effects of LTE should be pretty much negligible.
Over 4hrs on Ics and 3hrs with jellybean.
Usually after about 15-16 hours off the charger I am around 45-55%
my mind is blown seeing all of your battery life's.. i get to 10 hours if i'm lucky...
on stock i would get to 12 hours (charged the phone half way through the day for like an hour)
Now that i've rooted / unlocked and flashed Liquid smooth RC7 my battery is dying so much faster.. i have sync, locations, LTE, etc off

I get from 6am to 10am and have anywhere to 15% to 30% left. Moderate to heavy use. I do charge it on my way to work for 25 minutes. Whats weird is the phone lasts longer if I do this. If I use 8-9% before I go to work then charge for 20 minutes on the way it lasts all day. I love the battery life.

If the screen is on because you are using the LTE, you are going to sap the battery much more quickly. I love the LTE, but it is not battery friendly. If you aren't using a lot of network, then you are correct. Most peoples on screen time is because they are using their network though.
Heavy use -about 1 day with 8-9 hours on screen time
Medium use- 2 days minimum
Light use- don't ever use lightly

Battery Life Complaints?

I was just wondering why there are so many complaints about the battery life on the s3...right now I'm on aosp pure Google and with 18 hours on the battery for the day I'm at 87%...This is pretty average with most of the aosp Roms I have used...I turn of WiFi and 4g unless I'm using them and I have a few battery tweaks in my init.d and build.prop that are on just about every site that is android related and are pretty easy to apply... If .7 % per hour is really something to complain about then get a junky flip phone...you should be able to get like 3 days out of that...battery drain is going to happen when you basically have a handheld laptop with the power and capabilities the s3 has...Just sayin

A lot of people here are considered in the 'heavy usage' category, which the stock battery drains quickly. For me, I could drain the battery in 5-6 hours easily. And fyi the time the phone is on matters very little, it's all about screen on time. With my extended battery I get 8-10 hours of SCREEN ON which is the most important aspect, glad the stock battery works okay for your usage, everyone is different.

Unfortunately I believe you're confusing uptime with the amount of time the screen is on, I can guarantee you do not get 8-10 hours of the screen being on in a single charge with the stock battery, even at the lowest brightness setting. Post screen shots of those two screens when you get that much, I'd love to see it! That was only my 3rd cycle with the 4400 mAh battery, it's even better now, I just haven't taken any new screen shots.
Oh, and my brightness was at 50-75% that day.

Expected SOT

Hi,
recently I bought N5 and I am very pleased with it. I could say that I love it. But I am worried about my battery. When I was buying it, the dealer at my carrier store, was hiding the box when opening it from me. I think that the box was not sealed any more ( i dont know if it is only in my country but here it's usuall that when buying a new phone they cut the sticker on the box infront of you). When I called at my store they said that they had only one more. And I am worried that the phone was used befor me for showcasing in the store. My battery usually lasts for two days ( I also have N7 so when on university i use N7 for heavy work) but barely get 3 hours of SOT. Wifi and 4G mostly off and brightness at minimum or max at 30% if on sun. Assistant of, gps of, ART on, using snapdragon BatteryGuru. I would really like to know what SOT should I get with this settings. And if you guys think I should go for warranty and hope that they replace my battery. Is there any way of seeing if the phone was already factory reset? Also I saw guys getting 5-6 hours SOT with wifi on here on XDA. Don't get me wrong I love the standby time but when using it (FB, twitter, messaging, browsing Chrome, 2 mail syncing) the battery drains like F1 car drains gas. If this is somewhere answered close the thread and point me there . Thank you

screen on time is totally dependent on personal usage.
the best thing to do would be to root it and install 'better battery stats'. then you can analyze your battery properly. feel free to let this run for a full discharge and then post your screenshots
Yeah the problem with SOT is purely personal and that is why I posted here to see what you guys think. But still it is interesting to see how different the time can be from user to user. Will post screenshots in the evening.

remove this. It doesn't help and if anything, it makes it worse
The battery drains whether the screen is on or off. If you're getting two days of use with 3 hours sot I would say that's ok. You might get 5 hours if you drained the battery in a day. Does that make sense? It does in my head!

Ok so I removed Battery guru. And here are my stats from today (this was not my normal day of using it). Through the day the screen was almost constantly at the same level of brightness. And a lot of wifi and even 4g usage. But my battery could be draining a bit faster too because of not that good cellular coverage.
As pepdavies said with my normal use probably I would get closer to 4 hours if I would draind a battery in a day. .
Can I aske one more question? If I charge my phone over night and phone is off, will it overcharge my battery the same way as it would if it was on?

ive always charged my android devices overnight while they are on, nothing bad comes from it. you will be fine. i do it on my nexus 5 every night, yet still see at least 5 hours sot every battery cycle(5+ hours sot because i use lte exclusively, it gives better battery life than 3g/2g).

You can leave the phone plugged in 24/7/365, on or off, and it will never overcharge, whatever that may mean. Nor will it overheat, slow down, melt, or explode.
I got 7 hours of screen on time by having the screen on a low brightness but that is only practical in a dark environment. I've also disabled a lot of google stuff and uninstalled google+ which was destroying 20% of the battery regularly. Generally 5 hours of screen on time using lux to lower brightness levels but to a point where the screen still looks nice
4 hours sot is typical for stock

i dont really see how anyone can enjoy using there phone at minimum brightness unless its in a dark room i keep mine at 25% and it looks damn good using a tweaked gamma profile. Regarding battery i average 4.30 hours screen on time and 23 hours total with wifi only mostly web browsing and as said already there will be no harm in charging your phone overnight when i wake up its at 100% and battery temp is at around 24c

you are right that it will never overcharge, it is not optimal to keep your device with a full charge of battery for an extended period of time. by extended period of time i mean 5+ days

there are many people in this world and we all have our own likes and dislikes.
when im outside I enjoy being outside and do not use my device except to check a notification or two. so when im inside and in an average lit room, I can drop the brightness to about 15% and that is enough for me. remember, lighting the screen is the phone's biggest battery hog. any decrease to this will increase your SoT. I enjoy getting an extra 2 hours out of my device before i have to be tied to a power cord
that said, im waiting for my zerolemon battery case to ship and can't wait

is battery that bad?

i read a lot of post before getting Nexus 5 last year during summer about his terrible battery life
when i got the phone i could still run a normal day usage
i was reading this article and i add in "PhoneArena.com's custom battery benchmark" a nexus 5 and the result is
S6 7:14
Nexus 5 4:50
PhoneArena.com's custom battery benchmark
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Batt...flagships-stack-up-against-each-other_id70173
not sure if this is realistic or many users has tons of app that drain S6, but if S6 has 25% more battery life that Nexus 5 i would say that is not that bad
Battery Life on the Galaxy S6 is about average at worse... but it is good... right now I have 10h 30m off charger and 2h 38m screen on time and 49% left... people just say that because it has the most powerful processor and best display on the market but the second smallest battery on any flagship... but it is more than numbers you know... and I have to say this thing charges incredibly fast... Dead to 100% in an hour and sometimes even less...
Battery is at most acceptable for daily use.
Acceptable, but not an issue because it goes from 40% to full so darned quick!
I have no idea how folks get such good SOT. I have never gotten more then three hours on any device. Some of that is that I have bad vision and I like it at least halfway to full brightness. I also have a great aversion to turning off any features. I paid to have a full featured smartphone, not a gimp!

the only way to compare battery performance of different phones is to do a maximum screen on time test with a comparable brightness, everything else just compares software wakelock bugs, most caused by 3rd party apps at that
(edit: or do screen off music playback like this test did)

I have mostly everything on except NFC, Bluetooth and GPS (only on when I need them) and I have brightness always either 50+ percent or 100 percent and get 5 hours SOT every single day. I do stream about an hour a day music through bluetooth and 4g to my car, and the usual, Facebook, Whatsapp, Camera use, Texts, hour os so of calls. The phone lasts a full day.
The only reason this phone will have lower than 5 hours screen time is if you're using your camera, sat nav software, or games all day.

Camera! I'm always shooting... I do use bluetooth a lot, but that doesn't appear to drain it much. I also turn my brightness all the way up if I'm shooting outside. I hear that Samsung has research going that could double battery capacity, but it's a little way off. That would be wonderful. Until then, I am happy to be able to recharge so fast...
It's not great but good (enough?) (and perhaps pretty damn good regarding the battery size), and indeed charges hella fast. I came from the Z3 which lasted very long though so I might be spoiled...
I actually achieved 5hr SOT yesterday (and total usage of 2 days) but it depends so much on use. After recharging to 100% and using whatsapp a lot the battery drained a lot faster for example. Now at 35% remaining with 2:10h SOT (and whatsapp and google services being the top spenders).
But yeah
this fast charging is not going to kill the battery really fast?
The battery is ****. Very similar to the Nexus 5, if not a bit worse. I use my phone quite a lot during the day. From full charge at 7am, I get the 15% battery notice at about noon. I charge it using fast charger till it reaches about 45%.. By 5pm I'm getting the low battery notice again.
I had the G4 for a week. Nearly full day of use out of that thing with same usage patterns I have on the S6.
The battery life was designed as either a secondary device or for people with a boring social/work life.

I decided to keep mine because the build quality on the S6 is on par with the iPhone 6. I enjoyed the battery life in the G4 but didn't feel I got my money's worth in quality compared to the S6. The moment a higher capacity battery is released for the S6 is the moment I'll be completely content.

Battery is surely not the best. With email sync using MailDroid, I had to charge the phone twice within the day. I don't use Facebook app, so that's a saviour. I stopped using MailDroid and battery life improved.
My usage is low to moderate, and am always on 4G LTE. Last 3-4 days I'm charging at morning 8 AM to 100%, it comes down to around 45% at 9 PM. I switch off Data at night and battery stays constant (maybe 44%). But again, if I keep screen ON for a while, then the battery is gone!
Battery is about as good as the S4, but worse than the HTC m8. Overall, it's awful considering you cannot swap it out. Unless you don't use the phone much during the day, you will need to charge it overnight and then once more during the day minimum.
This is pretty damn good in my book...
About 30 min of real racing and 10 minutes cs portable... the rest is browsing texting and youtube... half LTE and half Wi-Fi. I also had location services running on high accuracy the whole time sucking up battery life
Is it normal that Google service is always that high?

hi guys, would like to know if you are happy with the battery life or not.. can you get a couple of days battery life with moderate usage and 4-5 hours sot maybe? that's what I use to get with my xz2c... i know experience may vary from people to people and usage etc but with moderate usage it should be pretty clear what I mean... I rarely look at sot but in general, after 4 days, the battery life is perfectly fine. Not stellar but I haven't hit 50% yet after all day use. I'd say easy 5 hours sot simply because I use Strava which is a battery hog while biking and running. With my P2 I'd come home with about 75% or less. With the P3 it's mid 80s and I still last the whole day without a charge. I tend to look at overnight drain AOD but face down so I guess that doesn't count, but I'm either getting 0.5% / hour or 0.6. On my P2 it was about 1.2% / hour. I'll check sot today and edit.

if someone can post also the overnight drain with airplane mode ON and AOD always ON too (that's how I would use it at night), that would be fantastic!
I got just over 5 hours of screen on time yesterday with heavy usage. 6:30AM to 11:30PM.
Adaptive screen brightness set to favor higher brightness. AOD enabled (this turns off when in a pocket or face down on a table, BTW). No gaming. On Wifi for ~70% of the day. Did not top off the charge at any point.
5 to 6 hr on lte. 6 to 7 on wifi. Like the pixel 2

I have only had it for a couple days, but I would never expect it to outlast an Xperia device. Those things go forever! I use LTE all day at work and then WiFi in the evenings at home. The phone stays on vibrate mode from 8am-5pm, and is primarily issued for occasional texts and checking XDA. I leave work with about 70% battery.
YouTube handles the rest of the load from 6pm-10pm. I don't track SOT but the battery percentage drops below 20% regularly with this routine.
Saturday when I put it on the charger at bedtime, it was at 51% with 4 hrs & 10 mins SOT. I thought that was outstanding.
I have super light usage and I get about 4 days. I didn't take a screenshot sadly.
Better than pixel 2 was...6.5hr sot on lte and 7 to 8 on wifi

That is normal. All of these high sot numbers are on WiFi only with special use cases, probably no cellular calls either.

I'm happy for those getting great battery life.
On mine it is definitely worse than my pixel 2 with the same usage.
I can get maybe 4.5 hours screen on time before it goes dead. Mixed LTE and wifi usage.
Hopefully it will improve after some updates.

My battery life is also noticably worse than the P2.. was running flash kernel on it and I know the P3 has a higher resolution screen but still.. If usually end the day with 70% left on my P2 whereas now I'm left with about 50%. All good signal LTE.

Lol, then you have no worries because you are clearly a light user. ?
It's still early days since I'm doing all the set up still which means more screen time than normal, but the fast charge is ridiculously good, even when connected to a PC.
Battery life is okayish. With normal use like browsing, some videos, light gaming, fb, insta, WA..etc it will go through till the end of the day. I get around 4-4.5 hours of SOT with WiFi, AOD off. I'll test it out more, probably.
