I tried using the Google hangouts messenger app that came stock with the Nexus 5 and it has the option for group messaging so I tried that and noticed that I don't get any of the messages that people reply with to that group chat. Is there any way to fix this? Like allow me to group message with iPhone people and stuff?

Has anyone gotten group messaging with iPhone users to work correctly on the stock hangouts application? I can send group messages but do not receive any responses. No individual messages and nothing in the group window. I also tried textra and had the same results.
Suggestions?

Do you guys in the U.S get free MMS?
The fact that Hangouts sends Group Messages as MMS makes it an expensive proposition here in the U.K?
in the US, every text plan i've had makes no distinction between SMS or MMS, plus i can't remember the last time i encountered anyone with a limited amount of SMS/MMS per month anymore...
Good afternoon all. Before I pull the trigger on the N5 purchase, I'd like to see if anyone has used it with a group chat with iPhone users?
My current ROM on my S3 supports it and I've downloaded the new hangouts app and enabled texting, but in the group chat (myself and two iPhone users) all the responses show as one users name / contact photo. I'm hoping that it's just a compatibility issue with my 4.3 ROM and hangouts.

I need to text a group in my contacts and I would like to select certain contacts within that group. I used to be able to do this in jelly bean, but can't seem to do it in kit Kat. I know GoSms does it, but I find that app way to heavy and it generally slows down the phone. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

It is similar to the stock 4.3 messaging app, but does groups.
Thanks for the reply, but with Textra, you can text to a group but you can select certain members of that group. That app is so close to being perfect though. Any other suggestions? This is impossible with hangouts I guess?

Try Smart Messenger.
I'm not sure if you can do what you're describing with Hangouts, but I do know that group SMS in Hangouts are automatically sent as MMS. If you or anyone else you text with gets charged per MMS, that's going to be an issue.
Looking to send a group text on my Nexus 5.
I created the group in People, it has 7 people, but how do I send to them?
The group doesn't show up in hangouts, any ideas?

I don't think the groups in contacts work for sending messages. You can add multiple people to a text to create a mms or you can send a text to a circle.

So I am new to this whole hangouts thing but I am on Nexus 5 so hoping I can get some help here. I am just really used to the AOSP SMS app.
I have been in a group text with 3 friends for about 2 months ago.
Now on Nexus 5 whenever I get a group chat from one of them, it just shows in their individual thread instead of a group thread like it did in the old SMS app.
In Hangouts go into Settings > SMS and make sure "Group Messaging" is checked.
What phones are your friends using?
