How to access fastboot and recovery

Hello all, I have a Nexus S and I want to try CM9.0 on it.
How could I access to fastboot (to flash the kernel) and recovery (to flash the ROM)?
Thanks and best regards.

This. You'll need to unlock first (if it's not already unlocked), then flash a custom recovery. No need to flash the kernel via fastboot, they come in flashable zips and a working kernel is part of every ROM you will find.
Hello, thanks for the replys.
I have unlocked the bootloader. I have this file: cm-9-20120618-NIGHTLY-crespo.zip
With other devices, I use to flash the kernel with fastboot:
Code:
# ./fastboot flash boot boot.img
Then, enter to recovery mode and install the ROM and Google Apps.
Is this the way to install CM9.0 on the Nexus S?
Thanks and best regards.
Flashing the zip installs the kernel too. No need to do it separately.

Sorry for the newby question, how must I install the zip file?
Thanks and best regards.
Through CWM (or other) preferred recovery. As i said, your phone will need to be unlocked and you'll need to flash the custom recovery via fastboot. After this, boot into recovery and flash the .zip file.

Thanks again.
How do I flash the custom recovery via fastboot? Sorry, but with the Xperia devices I have no problem, I just go to fastboot mode to flash the kernel, then reboot and enter recovery mode to flash the ROM.
Kind regards.
This rooting guide gives you all the basics. How to setup fastboot and Nexus S drivers, how to unlock if you are not already (note you lose ALL PERSONAL DATA on the phone unlocking - even sdcard) and how to flash a custom recovery. Only the last part is actually rooting the phone so you can ignore that for your purposes, the rest are necessary.
The only difference is you'll want the latest custom recovery. Note if you reboot into stock android it will replace the custom recovery (delete /system/etc/install-recovery.sh to stop this) each boot. After this, boot into recovery, install zip from sdcard and select the ROM.
Thanks.
I unlock it and now I have a clean device.
When I try to go to recovery it just restart, I can not go to recovery mode.
Am I missing any step?
Best regards.
I got it, just install the recovery this way:
Code:
# ./fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
I just install CM9.0 and it works great.
Best regards.

reboot to fastboot (in one of the following ways)
- use phone shutdown menu (if reboot to bootloader is there)
- use adb: "adb reboot bootloader"
- start phone with holding down volume down + power
flash recovery via fastboot: "fastboot flash recovery <path to recovery here>/recovery.img
You should see 2 lines: writing recovery .. OK, flashing recovery.. OK.
If You already have older version of CWM, be sure to back up system first. When something happens during flash, You don't like the new CMW version or recovery image is corrupt for some reason, You can always flash Your old recovery back.
Your phone must be rooted and bootloader unlocked.
Check out more detailed instructions at http://www.androidauthority.com/desire-clockworkmod-touch-recovery-55857/ (in Instructions paragraph)
And as always: do it on Your own risk! Happy flashing!

I think this shouldn't be a problem, since this is a standard image and I think that flashify uses DD or similar to write appropriate partition. You should check with the app developer, though!

This is not the right place to ask questions.PM me and I will help you root or open a thread in general forum.
If you have unlocked BL just flash a custom kernel to get root like this one

Well, copy and paste the guide to my PM box as well please. Or make a new thread because there's really no one central and up-to-date thread about what exactly you need in one post. Everything seems scattered around and thus I haven't too figured out what and how because I guess I'm probably missing some stuff.

New ROM ?
1) Enter fastboot mode
Flash TWRP
Code:

2) Flash Kernel
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
3) Boot kernel via fastboot and enter TWRP
Code:
fastboot boot boot.img
4) During boot of the kernel press vol up (once the notification LED changes) -> color changes to deeper orange -> you enter TWRP
swipe and skip forward --> Reboot -> Recovery

[QUESTION] Problems flashing a rom

I had a Xperia L, its pretty old now but i wanted to do something with it like trying out Android Nougat feel on Xperia L
So i googled much (I don't have much knowledge in phones and flashing), I tried installing this https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-l/orig-development/rom-cyanogenmod-14-alpha-1-t3469162
Lineage OS on Xperia L(taoshan) by corphish
I read few of the blog posts about flashing a custom rom on Xperia L, and I got to know that the steps to install a custom rom are:
1. Root your phone
2. Unlock Bootloader
3. Install TWRP/CWM or some custom recovery
4. Flash the rom from SD Card or Internal Storage(Clear Cache, DALVIK CACHE obv)
I did root my phone with KingRoot APK
Did unlock bootloader with the official SONY Technique, but the thing happened was my phone went into a bootloop (boot animation didn't stop) although i fixed it by flashing the official stock ftf and when i turned my device on my Root and Bootloader was gone again
Could someone recommend me a solution to this issue
(Might be a way to directly flash the lineage rom from the PC/or some flasher app which takes all the load to flash a rom/
Or just a possible fix)
Thanks ! (In Advance)
~Haji
Hi Haji joon
Maybe you should try unlocking your bootloader with flashtool v0.9.18.4 , Then turn off your phone.
Then extract the "boot.img" file from the custom ROM's zip file and use adb&fastboot (you can get it from here: https://androiddatahost.com/bnjkh ) then copy boot.img file to the installation folder of adb&fastboot and connect your phone in fastboot mode (volume up + connect to pc) and type the command below, in fastboot app:
" fastboot flash boot boot.img "
Now you can turn on your phone and press volume up to enter recovery, and install any custom ROM you want

In order to flash Nougat ROM, you must have latest TWRP recovery (v 3.0.2 for xperia L)
So, you should either flash TWRP image or the boot.img of any Nougat rom( because they have latest TWRP in them) and flashing boot.img is somehow safer in xperia L (but no difference in them)
And about boot.img, it is in the ROM file that you've downloaded. For example, in Lineage rom's zip installation file, there's a file named boot.img . You should extract and use it in the process I've said before.
And if anywhere you encounter with a problem, simply you can flash stock ROM and start again
And sorry for my long post!

Actually, I'm not sure about Lineage 14.1, because I've only tested it on RR Rom. But you can simply test it with no worries! Or just use the first method that I've told you before.
And about kernel, unfortunately there is no usable kernel developed for XL Nougat ROMs till now :crying: . You should use the ROM's default one.

Here you are:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120743168
Use this one. It's latest stable version of RR 7.1.2 ROM (2017/06/20). It has no bugs (but install some other file managers, default one can't access sdcard0)
There was a problem in last one (2017/07/06) but developer is working on it and maybe release an update soon ( I hope).
So I'll try it out today with the boot.img of the RR rom
Also for the ROM updates do i need it flash it again or is there some OTA updating feature ?
Ok, I again did unlock the bootloader and its in bootloop state again, will i start the flash mode (volume down + usb cable insert) and then load the boot.img of RR with
" fastboot flash boot boot.img " ?
Then i can power + volume up to start TWRP and install it right ?

No, you should press volume up and use fastboot mode to flash boot.img
Then type fastboot reboot and disconnect cable and press volume up when LED lights on.
Also, for recovery mode do i need to press the volume up button continuously or just long press it

Quickly pressing one time when phone vibrates is enough, but it's better to press 2-4 times continuously.

Can't boot into twrp recovery

After rooting Xperia m2 dual model I unlocked the bootloader through official Sony developer website. Then after it I installed twrp through twrp manager. Installation was successful but now I am unable to boot into recovery mode(before installing twrp also). Even I have used fastboot to reboot into recovery mode!! Any idea about what is the problem?? As per some solution I tried to upgrade the bootloader via Emma but the service was not available for Xperia m2 dual. I need to flash Lineage ROM! For this I need to boot into recovery mode! Any solution to boot into recovery mode???

Try updating your bootloader via Emma (Emma is Sony official flashtool.)
After updating download FlashTool (not Emma! Search in Google Flashtool 0.9.23.2)
Open Flashtool and click BLU icon (BootloaderUnlock)
Get your serial and unlock code from Sony Developer World.
When you done try flashing TWRP via fastboot using command in cmd :
fastboot flash recovery [drag TWRP img file to cmd)
It shoud work
I guess you have not read my Post completely! I hav e done all this process. Especially while updating bootloader from Emma it's showing that service is not available for my mobile! I have already installed twrp through twrp manager! Installation was successful but I am unable to boot into twrp recovery! I have the same problem, can't access TWRP...
To flash the ROMs LineageOS 14.1 and Resurrection Remix-N RC2 (in use), I did...
Followed the ROM installation instructions (IMPORTANT!)
In the TWRP step.... I made this:
*** I am not responsible for bricked devices, etc....***
*** AFTER THIS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO INIITIALIZE DE S.O. ANYMORE ***
*** YOU'LL ONLY BE ABLE TO BOOT S.O. AGAIN AFTER THE ROM FLASH ***
Step 0 - Before anything, copy the ROM zip and GAPPS to external sdcard
Step 1 - Connect your phone to your pc in Fastboot mode (Turn off your phone and connect usb while pressing vol up)
Step 2 - Open Flashtool (0.9.18.6) > click on Thunder button > select FastBoot Mode > click OK
Step 4 - Click on Seletct kernel to Flash > in the window Kernel Chooser, click on *.sin and change it to *.img, Now Select twrp-3.1.0-b2.img and OK.
TWRP WILL BE FLASHED and will be the only thing that will work...
Step 5 - Flash the ROM and GAPPS (if you want)
Enjoy the new S.O.!
Edit: The above method works, but its better to do the right way...
I thought I had updated the bootloader, but actually I didn't... After following this, specifically this, TWRP works!
Sorry for the confusion!
