Every time I reboot my Nexus 5 (which isn't that often, but I do also get the occasional crash) the radio seems to default to LTE only mode. I simply get no signal at all as my network doesn't have 4G where I live (yet). Going into *#*#INFO#*#* I can then set it back to LTE/GSM auto (PRL) and everything is back to normal.
At the minute, its pretty obvious because theres no signal at all - but when LTE does rollout I feel I won't notice the radio has locked itself back to LTE only as I'll see signal - just no one will be able to call me? Is there a quick fix to this (I'm new using Android full time) or is worth getting in touch with google?

So I work in midtown Manhattan, and in my particular building, ATT's service is very spotty, specifically where I sit. You'd think the 28th floor near Times Square would get great reception, but I don't. Oftentimes my network connectivity will go completely blank w/ absolutely no service, then turn back on. I've called ATT, switched to a 4G sim card, they pushed updates, rebooted my phone, etc. all to no avail. I still get very spotty service.
EXCEPT I just figured out if I have an app w/ streaming data running (run once there is an initial connection of course), it actually maintains the connection (currently using the streaming music app "di.fm" and "sky.fm", Pandora would prob work as well). I'm assuming this is because the phone locks onto a specific tower and doesn't let go as long as the app is accessing the data continuously.
Is there a way for my phone to stay connected to a specific tower and not jump around without running a streaming app? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
I hate to say this but it's your area during peak times. I work downtown near the Brooklyn Bridge and experience the same thing. Until AT&T finishes the backhaul this is what we're stuck with. Build props and other mods are shots in the dark but won't help much.

Unless they give him a microcell.
Since they know you've been having issues, they might give you one for free.

But why am I able to maintain connection when running a streaming app? If traffic was the reason why my connection was dropping, wouldn't it still do so?
I think the tech guy said something about how my phone would try to connect to a tower 20 miles away when there are half a dozen right around me. When my phone does have reception, it's probably because it's hooked up to one of the close local towers, and running a streaming app forces it to stay locked onto that one...

When idle it's easier to drop connections as the phone switches frequencies. Here's a couple of things to do if you haven't done so already.
Make sure you're running the stock radio, if you haven't flashed another radio you're running the stock one.
Change to usa bands only. Open the dialer, press: *#*#4636#*#* Go to phone information. Press menu then press select radio band. Then select USA only. Give it a few seconds while it reconnects.
OK I'll let you know if it maintains network connection any better.
Also, what about the preferred network type? The options I have are:
- WCDMA preferred
- GSM only
- WCDMA only
- GSM auto (PRL)
- CDMA auto (PRL)
- CDMA only
- GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
- Unknown
It was previously on WCDMA preferred, but should it be GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)?
I'm on bamf soab 1.03 and I dont think anyone else is habing this problem but I'm wondering if anyone knows how to fix this issue. When I get 4g signal the phone will use it but won't use 3g. It drops out of 4g and then just stays without data. So basically its only using 4g or else its just not connecting to 3g. There is no data problem in my area because people I live with are getting 3g just fine....any ideas?
Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Radio Info > Change LTE only to CDMA/LTE mode
if you don't have the radio info option there, download LTE toggle from the market and do the last step.
heh. i tried out the new 1.03 and market just kept crashing on me(even after force stopping/clearing data) and uninstalling updates. so i just thought "to hell with it" and switched back over to shiftao3p
No such setting as LTE only. And my phone has always been on LTE/cdma so its not that I already checked that. I'm not a noob user.
do you have EHRPD on under modem settings in ##778? It should be. Past that I sometimes reset if it has issues locking on to one and that will resolve. That's all for my ideas, though I'm still on SOAB 1.02

This is what i was going to suggest. Here's some information that might be helpful. I've found that with the network testing and stuff the past few weeks in my area, sometimes revision a enabled is better, sometimes eHRDP works better. Try switching revision A and see what it does.
Try dialing ##778# on your phone, hit call if you need to.
Choose edit mode
Password is 000000 (six zeros)
Choose modem settings, go down to revision A, and change from e HRDP to "enabled"
Press menu and commit modifications, phone will reboot.
After it settles you may need to go to *#*#4636#*#* and choose phone info then change your preferred network settings to get a solid signal.

I was messing with it last night and seems that the issue is fixed if it happens again ill follow those steps. I'm a pretty advanced user but I'm not so familiar with those settings so thanks for the help

I'm running a version of 2.11.605.3, de-bloated and rooted.
I lost 3G on October 21st. I would either get 4G, or nothing. On occassion, I would get 1x. Selecting CDMA only gives me NO data
If I change the REV-A option under the ##778# menu from EHRPD to enabled, the 3G comes back and the toggling between 3G and 4G works fine.
Switch back to EHRPD and 3G goes away. Seems like the problem is with EHRPD. I don't know why all of a sudden it stopped working correctly and I don't have enough tech skills to identify the possible cause.
VZW has had trouble with their Data network the last two weeks, could be a VZW problem. I have not had any 3G problems on my phone and I am running SoaB v1.03 on my phone.

I am having the data switching problem (stays in edge - wont switch to 3g/4g) on my Infuse when I install CM7. I have seen the 1 APN suggestion to fix this issues with AT&T but was wondering if there is a similar solution for Rogers.
as a work around I tried switching my preferred networks from WCDMA preferred to WCDMA only (i live in Toronto - so no issues having access to 3g/4g network at all times) but it reverts back to preferred, data switches back down and gets stuck in edge.
I am having the same issue. All I am getting is edge.
I have a nexus one though.
It only just started though. Probably within the 2 or 3 days..
Not sure what's changed
Same here.
It only runs on Edge. If I put my N1 on 3g, it works intermittently. Only when it wants to, and even though it shows it as being connected, it is not, as text messages come in hours later, and calls go straight to voicemail without showing anything on the phone .
I checked the APN settings, called Rogers, they confirmed all my settings were correct, but still, nothing.
some time ago i set the phone to LTE in the testing menu to see what LTE networks it could see. it saw them fine but not for the network i use yet.
the thing is ever since then everytime the phone reboots it seems to default back to LTE only. soi have to ga back in to the test menue and set it back to LTE/ GSM to get the signal back.
Help! why is it still doing this and how can i fix it?
Go to Settings, More... under Data usage, Mobile networks, Preferred network type. Make sure the radio button for 3G is selected.
so i cant leave it on 4g preferred? 4g should be coming to my location in the next coulpe weeks so id not want that to be perminant.
or will setting it to 3g reset things?
ooooooh, did as you said rebooted, 3g locked on. sat back to 4g preferred and rebooted, 3g locked on.
yey! thanks, i dont get why it worked but much appreciated.
Hello,
This morning when I woke up, I noticed that when I switched to data on my Z5, it wouldn't work. Normally the signal strength icon in the status bar at the top will display a small "4G" next to it. However in my case it seemingly connects and then disconnects in a set pattern. The "4G" appears, and then disappears. The same thing happens when I switch to WCDMA/GSM preferred. I'm on T-Mobile.
I just did a factory reset on this phone so any setting I could have tweaked should be back to normal and there are no apps/Stamina Mode or anything turning it off. It's straight up frustrating to see 4G literally flicker on and off my screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you're setting it to WCDMA/GSM preferred it should should 3G no? Do you have an LTE preferred option?
Could be your towers are being worked on.
