This is paranoid android's notification peek in APK format. Almost same as active display if anyone wants to try it. https://github.com/lzanita09/Notifi...1.0-20140504/NotificationPeekPort-release.apk

It looks cool but I couldn't get it to work.
Looks really cool but doesn't work on GS4 mini 9190 running carbon rom
reverted back to active display
Link is dead. I had to actually look it up on Google just to see what it was. Overall, it looks nice seems to have quite a bit more functions over Motorola's Active Display. If I can find the .apk I may give it a go.
Latest Build
Found the latest build.
Just had a chance to mess with it. It works, but not real well. The screen wakes up when you get a notification but if you don't open the notification right then and there and let the phone go back to sleep it can not be reawakened just by moving the phone like Active Display. You actually have to turn the screen on via the power button and then unlock the phone to check the notifications bar. I did send myself a bunch of notifications and thought it was cool how I could swap between them. I wish Active Display allowed for that feature. Also, the icons are a lot nicer than Moto's Active Display. Overall, I think this app will be pretty cool once all the bugs are worked out of it.

That is the intended use of Peek - it is only active for 10 seconds after receiving a notification. In theory, the screen shouldn't wake at all unless you move the device within those ten seconds since it is designed for both IPS and AMOLED screens and prevents unnecessary screen-on time.

No what I mean is that with Motorola's Active Display if you wave your hand or move the phone after the notification screen time out it'll show you the notifications again. As long as you don't push the power button to wake and unlock it you can still view the notifications via the Active Display. With the Peek display you get the notification once and then that's it until the next notification. Moving the phone or waving in front of the proximity sensor won't rewake to check notifications from the peek screen.
Don't get me wrong, I like the PA Peek app, I just wish I could check the notifications indefinitely like I do the Active Display. I wish the Active Display would let you cycle through your notifications like Peek. I'll definitely keep an eye on the Peek app, hopefully they get it sorted to where you can wake it by moving the phone or waving across the proximity sensor.

Same here, like the moto active display, hope somebody can port that one to Nexus 5?

Hi all,
If the question isn't that clear: Is it possible to let the sidepanel light up when you get a message? sms or whatsapp or whatever? only the sidepanel. And this when the mainscreen is off. so the phone is locked.
At this moment the sidepanel doesn't do anything when something is received. I checked all the settings but nothing happens.
Thanks for all the future reply's
When the screen is off, you can rub the Side Panel like a genie lamp and it will show you any missed notifications. But AFAIK, that's about it...

I found an alternate way to accomplish this. It's not exactly what you want but it comes very close imo.
1. Go to your lock screen settings and turn off all information that can be displayed on your lock screen.
2. Turn off all lock screen effects.
3. Choose swipe to unlock.
4. . Select a pitch black wallpaper of your choice and select it as your lock screen wallpaper.
5. Profit! I set my ringer to silent when i am in a meeting at work. When you receive a text message, the orange edge notification panel lights up and goes out in 3 secs. The main display stays completely blacked out, (except for the nav buttons and notification pull down menu) thanks to your black lock screen wallpaper. This much more discrete, compared to having your entire QHD display light up in all its glory, during times when more stealth is required
I too thought this was going the feature of the phone WITHOUT rubbing the edge panel
guess we either have to wait for a rom that does that or Samsung release something for that cuz that would be so SICK!!
I saw the Korean Note Edge screen lights up when receiving text message, so is this feature for some strange reason removed for US versions? Honestly to a certain point I thought this was one of the main reason to using the edge , not waste battery by reading the text message without turn on the entire device.
any updates?
Does anyone know if this will be available soon? Maybe in the lolipop update? Would love this to come out. Thought it was already on it tbh
I almost made a new thread before coming across this thread. Are there any updates on this? I'm running Lollipop now on my Note Edge but it still doesn't appear as if they have included this feature which leaves me a bit dumbfounded since it would seem like the perfect use for this Edge screen. It kinda does it already when you rub it (which takes quite a long time to load) but it would be nice if it would just light up automatically when you get a SMS, email, Whatsapp, missed call etc.
hi,
I own the flip cover from Samsung and with this when I receive a notification or a call I get only the edge screen power on.

Yes mine is possible... n915L
remove the fingerprint security...
then go to messages then setting then notifications (turn on the notification then check the EDGE SCREEN option...
Edge Screen option says
Show preview of new messages on the edge of the screen..
Then Everytime you received a message... it will show at the EDGE of the Screen.....

Damn, I already have a flip cover from a third party. I didn't like the Samsung one because the edge screen isn't covered at all (mine has a plastic cut out). Nevertheless, they should still make it possible even without the official flip cover since it can easily be a functionality built into the phone, not the cover.

Thanks, I didn't know that but after checking it, it was already ticked. I hardly ever get any SMS, mostly messages through Whatsapp and Line. What I was talking about though isn't even a preview of the messages, just icons like what you would see on the status bar before you pull it down for the notifications. The Information Stream doesn't display notifications from every app even after I select them in the settings (and even then, you'd have to rub the edge for it to appear) and the Briefing Panel also doesn't show every notification I get (I got a few Facebook messages on the Messenger app in my notifications but according to the Briefing Panel, I had no notifications). Of course, it's not a big deal and I still love my Note Edge, but this is the kind of thing that always made me stay away from Samsung in the past. A lot of potentially useful features let down by poor execution.
Go to the play store and find Augmented SmartWatch Pro and Augmented Edge. These two apps (both by the same dev) together do what you're wanting. The main screen DOES still turn on, but it's a blank grey to black gradient (kinda like the background of the quick glance from the Note 3). I'm hoping a later update gives the option to just make it completely black.

Thanks but the Augmented Edge only shows Google Music controls and the Augmented Smartwatch Pro costs $4. I don't know if I'm being a cheap bastard or not but I feel that's unreasonable considering it should've been a basic functionality. But the fact that it still lights up the main screen albeit with a dark grey/black gradient seems to indicate that it's not as easy to code something like this as I had imagined otherwise he would've just turned on the edge screen alone.

Personally I don't mind paying a little bit for a decently coded app that effectively provides a much needed feature, but I know what you mean.
Also, yes the Augmented Edge app by itself doesn't do much. And Augmented Smartwatch Pro doesn't even provide features relevant to non Wear users on its own, but the two work together and I've definitely enjoyed the benefits (I leave my edge on the desk by my bed so if a notification goes off or anything, I just have to turn my head to look. )

thanks for the tips... I enjoyed the 2 apps
I'm glad I could help. On a related note (pun intended of course) for anyone reading this who may be interested ASP and AE (the apps mentioned above) was JUST updated to support an entirely black main screen while displaying edge notifications.
For me, it'll have to be the notification LED I really miss that. Had different colours for different apps and even people, so I knew who or what it was without even picking up my phone to check.
I also miss the fingerprint sensor on all the banking apps etc but that'll be resolved in due course once the developers switch to the biometric API for Face Unlock.
What is it for you?

+ 1 on everything you have statted.
I have not yet purchased the Pixel 4 xl
And dont know if I will
Definitely rather have a LED light than AOD for sure.
Only the original quality photos and videos backup but not really. I'm actually using my 100GB Google One storage which I hardly touched. At my current rate of 1GB per 12 days, I'll be needing more space in just under 3 years. [emoji23]

Hands down the finger print sensor. ? Unlimited Full Photo Backup as well. Wide angle selfie camera. I didn't think it was a huge deal on the 3 but I ended up using it quite a bit.
For sure LED notification and fingerprint sensor. I like the face unlock but also want to have the choice to not use it and use a fingerprint instead. There's many times I will pull my phone out just to see the time then POOF...unlocked. Ugh! lol
(yes, I know PIN/Pattern can be used in lieu of face unlock)

There is also a setting to face unlock then go to the "lock screen" rather than all the way in. That's what I do. So tap the screen to see notifications or face unlock then swipe up.
Settings -> Display -> Lock Screen Display -> Skip Lock Screen toggle : On skips directly to last screen used (like your home screen). Turn it off and Face Unlock goes to your lock screen and you just swipe up to then go to the home screen.
nothing. I thought I'd miss the fingerprint sensor, but I don't Face unlock is so fast it would be unlocked before I could place my finger. I would like an ultra wide lens and top bezel to shrink but that was not on the older models either...just hoping those 2 are done on P5
I have a TB on Google one, so not a huge issue for me with photos. I save original quality. I had my subscription last year as well.
Autofocus for the front-cam, no doubt...
Biometric API is really bugging me and I bet we could wait a very, very long time before Devs start actually updating for it.
Nothing really. I thought I'd miss the LED, but I haven't really noticed it being gone much. The fingerprint sensor some, but mainly because a lot of my apps use it. Definitely miss the convenience of it. I'll be very happy once they start using the new API. I sort of miss the metal back of the 2xl. But, wireless charging is awesome, so it's kind of a toss up.
I DEFINITELY don't miss the notch on the 3. I didn't think it bothered me, until I got this phone. Now I can't understand how I went a full year with it...
At least for as long as only a few apps support biometric unlocking, it definitely is the fingerprint scanner. But I'm sure it's only a medium-term loss, and we'll see more apps being able to use biometric unlock very soon.
EdgeBlock prevents accidental touches along screen edges when you are holding your phone. This is especially useful on the latest phones with curved screen edges and very thin bezels.
I had been having a terrible time watching movies on my OnePlus 7 Pro, my fingers kept accidentally touching the edge of the screen, which caused problems like the video skipping ahead or bring up the cast dialog. another big problem was with the Camera, I kept accidentally changing focus and even closing the app. So I looked on the Play Store and found a few apps that do this, but none of them were satisfactory, so I made my own app.
The big difference between EdgeBlock and the others is you can specify different settings for portrait, landscape and fullscreen mode. Another important improvement in EdgeBlock is that it properly supports gesture modes and notches. The blocked area will always be at the screen edge.
Another huge advantage with EdgeBlock is that it does not require Accessibility Services or any other intrusive permissions. The only permission required is Draw/Display over other apps. As with all my apps, it is ad-free and does not harvest your data.
I have been using this since last summer, but only recently had the time to polish it an release on the Play Store. During that time I've optimized the app for all use cases.
Per app mode - Not needed!
I know one of the first questions I will get is about per app mode. I did create a per-app mode originally, but found it is not needed! Once you enable EdgeBlock there is no need to change the settings for different apps, it just works. You also have a lot of control using the settings for portrait, landscape and fullscreen. Some users my disable EdgeBlock in portrait and landscape, but enable EdgeBlock in fullscreen mode.
The biggest problem with a per-app mode is that it requires either the App Usage permission or an Accessibility Service. The app usage permission works, but must constantly poll for the foreground app. This is an unnecessary waste of resources and battery life. The Accessibility method would work better, but requires an Accessibility service. I do not think an Accessibility service is warranted, since the app functions perfectly without it and I want to keep the app as light as possible.

Would it be possible to use this method to block access to the top edge on the lockscreen to prevent access to the quick settings?
Thanks

not sure if you are aware, but there is an LSPosed module that does this, called 'NoQSInLockScreen'. works great for me
This is exactly what I'm looking for but it doesn't really work. If you are touching the blocked area while in app, you are unable to touch anything else within the same app. For example if you open Chrome and then place your finger on the edge blocker and with your other hand try to scroll up and down it won't let you scroll because you're touching something else on the screen. As soon as you stop touching the edge blocker you're able to scroll again.
Unless Im doing something wrong or not understanding how this app is intended to be used.
So if I'm playing a game and any part of either one of my hands is touching along the edge other movements within the game get confused because I'm touching the edge as well as trying to make a different move within the game itself.

After a little further testing three of the edges work exactly how I need them to work. But one edge does not. The edge at the top of the phone regardless of orientation does not allow you to touch it and touch something else within the same app. So this is The edge that would have the front facing camera. Basically the edge that would be the top of your phone.
Hi Guys! If you could, what Apps would you like to run on your cover screen, given that it's really small or what type of information you wish you could access from the cover screen?

I obviously can do some magic.
That's why here to collect ideas which the actual users may would like to see, I won't be super keen on AOD implementation as that would eat up battery, but sure, could be an option. I have my own list of to-dos for the first version of the Super App, just want to see what users come up with.
something can toggle wifi Bluetooth sound flashlight.....
I used aod on all my samsungs. and even on large screens it didn't add much to the battery drain. But how many forums I read, most users are at a loss why the small Samsung display, which is logical for aod, was not used in this model.
about adding functional - enabling bixby routines would be logical without opening the phone.

Well, if Samsung natively implements sure, not much batter drain, but as a third-party developer there are limited access to the APIs (at least not without root.) But yeah, I will see what I can do about it. Bixiby routines, interesting.
I second the toggles for bluetooth/sound/flashlight. Also would like the notification ring as well.. like the ring we see when we charge it.
super. I hope you will finish this soon
Thanks forbyour work is it possible to choose thé number of lines of notification liké the Google assistant message (3 lines) and an vertical scrolling and longer time before extinction for notifications ?

I have a couple days with the flip and for my confort don't spend to much effort to open and for the sake of won't scratch more often when I put on every surface close position, I semi-close pacman like position and put like a stand so the metal frame only touch the surface not the glass and that way when I have to open only use one hand to fully open.
But in that position all the notifications appear on the main screen, so no way to see what notification have, it's there a way to show the notifications on the second mini screen in open position?
