[Q] Nexus 5 issues with 4.4.2 update - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
After i got the 4.4.2 update from 4.4 i noticed some issues with the nexus 5.
First issue is that i can't play video's on some websites while i could play them perfectly fine on 4.4. I get the following alertdialog error:
In titlebar: cannot play video
message: sorry this video cannot be played
Second issues is that for me the camera image quality is actually alot worse than on 4.4. Yes it does focus more quickly, but the image quality is worse. I get alot more noise in the foto's if the lighting conditions are lesse than outside during noon, and the images seem to be less sharp. When i make a photo of something containing text on it, the text seems alot less sharp than on 4.4.
I did try factory reset, but that didn't help much.
Do you guys experience te same issues as me?
I am considering going back to 4.4, is that possible? I could really find any tutorials on it.
Thanks!

Yup. Read the return to stock thread. Its helped me with all my software related issues. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513701

So you had the same issues with the update? Why are all the reviews positive about the camera quality after update while it's gotten worse?

No..no camera issues, just letting you know you can revert to 4.4

I'm not aware of any current fixes. Switching Roms built from source may fix the issue. I am running pure stock so I'm not sure. And its a bug. Because when using a third party sound recorder. There is less or no rustling noise. It may be fixed in the 4.4.3 update.

Actually the problem didn't appear with 4.4.2, it already existed with 4.4.0.
Some users report that it disappeared with 4.4.2, others say it was diminished, and others say it is the same.
As far as I know, google still didn't acknowledge this problem as being software or hardware related, so we will have to wait on it

Camera dark!

Hello,
I received a nexus5 few days ago but I just noticed that the camera application is very dark whereas the photo app works great.
I am on CM11 but i restored to 4.4.2 stock and it's still the same.

On auto, I tried with a fixed value, it's still the same. It's seems to have like a grey veil.. Very weird.. :/

do you have root or a custom recovery running?
That's known issue, and there is one quite lengthy thread on official Google groups (if you are talking about when shooting in low light, right?).
Google is aware of it. They even contacted few of use to recreate this issue and send a bug report to them, and that was like 2 months ago.
This happened after 4.4.1/4.4.2 update affecting all users (as far as I know).

Yeah, I was also a bit confused, but he is talking about camera and photo mode (app), so I guess he meant video mode .
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I'm not sure if this is really a bug though. All phones I've used have darker videos than photos. Most likely because the camera isn't capable of longer exposures while taking video. I might be wrong though.
well, if you are running a custom recovery, heres a flashable 4.4.1 full camera/libs. video camera works perfectly for me, its not dark http://goo.gl/orWkC0
But the strange thing is that it was not like that before the update. Maybe they just decreased exposure gain to remove noise.
There is one more weird thing happening withing camera app that I came across trying to "fix" this underexposure issue.
I pointed camera to some dark area and then I was toggling between modes there (eg. From camera mode to PhotoSphere, and then to video mode). Exposure issue fixed itself (in video mode), but picture was unbelievably wide and stretched. And as soon as you start recording, it reverts back to original underexposed video mode. So I guess that is just some weird glitch.

I have CWM touch with CM11-M3 on my phone.
I will try the 4.4.1 app this evening, I keep you in touch.
Thank you for your help guys :]
Yea its a known bug with android 4.4.2 and also the static noise while recording video.
.
My nexus 7 2013 has also been effected with these bugs.....hope google fixes it soon.
I just flashed the the camera but nothing changed :/

Are you sure that you are talking about the same issue? As far as I know, every phone has this issue after 4.4.1/4.4.2 update...
Here are my screenshots of camera app while pointing it to spot with poor lighting condition s...
Note that difference is even more noticeable in darker scenes...

So you are saying that it's normal for the nexus 5 to have an app camera less brighter than the photo app since 4.4.2? I received my phone a week ago so I didn't noticed it, it was already installed in 4.4.2

No, I am not saying that. Read my previous posts in this thread. It is known "bug". Google is aware of it (bug reports have been sent), and it is up to then to fix it or not.

Nexus 5 stutters and has audio distortion when using only YouTube

I'm on my third Nexus 5 that has had issues, and every single one of them have had this one. When using YouTube the video is jerky and stutters, and randomly there will be audio distortion and pops from the speaker. This is the third Nexus 5 I've had with this issue, and nothing I find can fix it. I can barely find any info on the internet about it.
From what I can tell it is limited to YouTube. The thing is, my old S2 on 4.1.2 had no such issue. None of my other electronics have any issues with YouTube to the degree this does. I'm past believing it is an issue with my phone(though it might be), because as I said, I'm on my third Nexus 5 with this issue.
Has anyone else had this issue? What are my options in trying to fix it? I've had such a bad experience with the Nexus line I'm close to giving up and buying a different phone. This is driving me crazy.
I hope someone can help. Thanks.

App is up to date, and my internet speed is at least 10mbps. I have 30 at home and have the same issues. It does this at home, here at work, and on 4G. But it couldn't be the internet connection as it works fine on my old phone and other devices.
Here's some more info.
Stock, unrooted, stock kernel, 4.2.2. I've been tempted to root and unlock the boot loader to install a new kernel and see if that helps, but I'm not used to rooting Nexus devices and don't want to make it difficult to upgrade to 4.4.3 when its released. Hopefully that will fix this issue, but Google has been radio silent on it so I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket.

I assume by 4.2.2 you meant 4.4.2
Try clearing data and cache on the YouTube app, if that doesn't help try uninstalling/uninstalling updates and reinstalling/reupdating.

Exactly. It's why I've ruled it out being a hardware issue, because this has happened to two other Nexus 5's I've been in possession of. It's so weird.
I've unlocked the bootloader, rooted it, all the fun stuff. I'm gonna try a new kernel to see if that will fix it.

Hiya,
Im having this issue as well. Some of the videos have disortion and stutters, but its not in youtube app. When I play videos form the websites it happens but, not in all of them. Dont know why some are ok and others dont. Sometimes its really annoying, especially when it stutters a lot in the playedback video. I do not know if its a hardware or a software issue.
EDIT:
Just checked the same video in Android Authority app and in Youtube app. In the first app audio stutters and being a wee bit choppy, in Yt however, everything is fine. Audio is clear, no stutters at all. So I assume its software issue and maybe audio codecs dont play well with third party apps. Also, I dont think there is a solution to this problem.

[Q] [FIXED] Camera sound Nexus 5 horrible after update 4.4.3

Hi there,
Recently i've updated my Nexus 5 to Android 4.4.3. (from stock 4.4.2 rooted)
Every time after updating to 4.4.3 my camera sound is horrible (like it's recording underwater).
I've used zip files (after wiping) to flash without any succes.
When i used my backup of 4.4.2 the problem was gone again. So the hardware isn't broken or anything.
Now i've sideloaded the official factory image (4.4.3) after a full wipe and still the problem exists.
How is this even possible? Is there any way to fix this?
Thanks for helping in advance
PS: i've contacted Google but their e-mail in bad translation didn't help me. They told me to do a factory reset lol

Do you know by any chance if there is a way to fix this? This topic was hard to google/search since I only got stuff about the previous camera bug. Or maybe my "tech English" isn't sufficient.
The issue is ongoing. We thought 4.4.3 was going to fix it but evidently not. There are no other real fixes

I never had this issue on previous android versions and I've had my Nexus shortly after the release. I honestly think this is a new bug but I could be wrong.
If there are no fixes I need a new phone or my money back.

The noise cancellation bug has been around since day 1, when I got my N5. Not everyone notices because it acts differently depending on the environment the videos are recording in. It also effects calls.
There's no fix right now. Try and get your money back if you like.

Yes, this is new bug, no discussion. I've made more than thousand vids with my N5 so I'm familiar with "old" sound bug, but this new one wich came with 4.4.3 is much worse than issue from previous one and make my Nexus completly useless as camera.. It sounds like underwater.

It's the same bug alright. I have no doubt. Perhaps it sounds different to you on your phone because they made it worse.
I can say with a strong degree of certainty that it is the same bug though, because the "old" bug you refer to was due to a poor noise cancellation issue. This bug went away for me when I fitted a slickwraps skin that covers my noise cancellation mic. ...and after upgrading to 4.4.3, I still don't have any issues whilst that secondary microphone is covered. My videos are as expected.

But how come it wasn't there on my 4.4.2 or as you described it, wasn't hearable?
I am a music producer. I always use my phone to film my latest creations to send them to friends via whatsapp. Never had any issues. First was good, now it's absolutely useless. I film exactly from the same spot in my studio. There should be a way around to get the sound back from 4.4.2 right? Some custom rom or whatever?

Just got a N5, camera disappointing

Hey All,
Just got a N5 and I'm a bit disappointed with the camera. Seems like this issue isn't new, but the camera has a really tough time autofocusing and even tap to focus.
I saw that there was a fix for older versions, but is there any update in 4.4.4?
Just as a curious note: most of the custom roms have this problem or not?
Thank you,
-Siroes
If you are disappointed with Nexus 5's camera performance, you should consider selling it away and get a phone with a better camera..
Agreed. If after 4.4.2 you think the camera is disappointing you must be a professional photographer. I'd highly recommend a Nokia WP as a phone camera or a quality camera.
Using Google Camera on 4.4.4 has a pretty decent shutter speed and also using different dalvik patches can increase the speed.
The camera works amazing when it does focus, but it takes quite a while sometimes. I never used 4.4.2, so I can't speak of that experience...
Just wanted to see if anyone else had similar issues.

Is this with or without HDR+? Without HDR on, I find 4.4.4 with the Google Camera will focus pretty quickly. With HDR on, it's obviously going to take a fair bit longer to take a snap.
Either you're doing it wrong or you're a professional photographer.
If you're the latter then I don't know what you're trying to do with a phone camera lol.
Camera works fine for me, better than the Note 3.

honestly, i have that and it makes very little difference. The camera quality is only good when using HDR mode which in some roms doesnt even work properly. If you are a photo takin/lovin person, this camera will be a disappointment.
A minute to focus? 60 full seconds?? I'm doubting that.
Anyway....camera phones are very cheap cameras....no phone will compare to even my 99 dollar Kodak camera.
I see comparisons with guys comparing this phone to that phone and they are all inferior to the cheapest of dedicated cameras.
If people are that concerned with getting consistently decent pics....carry a camera with you. They can be quite small and light, and will put all phone cameras to shame.
Just my 2 cents. ?
---------- Post added at 03:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:56 PM ----------
And.....if you rely on your phone camera to take your pics at a special event that you want good pics to capture the memories..... Its just silly to show up with nothing but your phone.
If it truly takes 60 seconds to focus I think you might have a problem with your hardware. Otherwise you should check out this thread if you haven't already http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...tos-post-pictures-videos-share-4-4-1-t2477920
Shouldn't take more than a couple seconds to focus unless you're moving the phone a lot. Perhaps your hand is too shakey? OIS helps but won't fix shakey hand completely.
At the worst it should take about 2-3 seconds to focus. Manage to get consistently clear pictures. If you update past 4.4.2 and still experience an issue, you've got a problem.
