froze wrong app! help! - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I froze google search and now my nexus 5 wont boot up. it just sits at boot logo. any ideas how to undo this? I have TWRP installed so I can access the files thru its file manager. is there a way to undo that setting by deleting the settings file for titanium backup?

Just sideload the stock system in twrp
Also Google search shouldn't stop the phone booting :-\
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

You definitely did something else, google search did not just magically decide that it wanted to freeze and not work.

I've been looking into this. Titanium uses the native package installer using "pm disable" command but I haven't located a database that pm uses to store this.
The command can be done via adb but not via recovery (At least not on my rom). You must be booted into android (not much help).... So it looks liek factory reset would be the only real way to undo it.
That said, like others said - freezing google search is unlikely to cause this issue.

Try and find a launcher in .zip format for installing via recovery

That wont help.
However I think I have the answer.
mount /data via recovery menu and connect to PC and open a command propt
Code:
adb pull /data/system/users/0/package-restrictions.xml c:\users\rootsi\desktop
Open package-restrictions.xml and locate your package that is probably enabled=3, then set as enabled=1
Code:
adb push c:\users\rootsu\desktop\package-restrictions.xml /data/system/users/0/

It might work because only the stock launcher requires Google search and settings to work
Try this - https://www.dropbox.com/s/cbpu826n0x2fzz7/nova.zip

It would do if the phone could boot
Anyway it's academic since he can simply unfreeze the app

[SOLVED]Android has no launcher

I ended up unistalling all launchers in my p500, now everytime i turn it on it gets stuck at the android logo screen, simply wont go any further
is there any way i can install an app from my computer or flashing it?
thx ahead
It is in boot loop because your phone has no launcher to boot into. Only way to install is via adb maybe or doing a fresh install of your ROM.
Swyped from my LG-P509 using XDA App.
check this or this
i still have spb 3d installed on this phone

ok heres the problem, even if i have to do a fresh install of my ROM, how can i set my phone into debugging mode first?
the only way i can access my phone is when i hard reset it then it boots once even with no launcher, but i cant go to configurations or anything
I do have recovery in this phone, is there any way i can flash a zip to install a launcher or something like that?
this is really starting to worry me
You are not telling us what ROM are you using. But since you have a custom recovery installed, I suppose it's not an official ROM. So, as a last resort, you can flash your ROM once again. You won't lose your apps, contacts, settings etc., but the default launcher of that ROM will be back on.
Also, for crying out loud, if you have a custom recovery, why don't you have a backup? It would have saved you a lot of trouble.

I have an official unbranded version from LG, v10a_02 if I recall correctly
when i try to flash the ROM from a zip file i get this message:

the reason why i dont have a backup its because it was all a huge accident, i had launcher pro installed, then i wanted to try spb 3d out but it only worked as soon as i installed it, it kept coming back to launcher pro so i uninstalled launcher pro and thats the result

No info about which recovery you are using, no info about what ZIP you are trying to flash either... eh.
Anyway, what on earth are you doing here. Just adb push some launcher APK to /system/app from recovery.
Anyone kindly give him a flashable zip.
Or
When you boot up, press search button and type the name of file manager installed on your phone.
Your file manager should show up. Click it and go to SD card and install any launcher apk from there.
Play with search button. Look for file manager, settings, any other app by long pressing it and find your way to reach SD card.

Good. Now, do not do it again!
Two more things for you to do:
1. Optional: edit the topic's name to begin with [SOLVED]
2. Mandatory: make a complete backup using the recovery

Actually I got this problem of no launcher on my galaxy mini, deleted samsung launcher and all other launcher also by mistake.
Search for "[GUIDE/DOWNLOAD] Install apk files quickly from computer to your device" thread on XDA, I follow that, installed GoLauncher using usb,
(I was stuck at Samsung logo, no notification bar, opened Kies, it automatically connected phone, still on samsung logo)
disconnected using kies, problem solved.

Upgrade launcher? in custom ROM

Hello!
This is my first post so please don't throw stones on me. I was interested if, for example I run CM7, how can I replace the built in Launcher? it has ADW but it's outdated, so I want to put in for example the latest version.
As I see, if I install launcher for example X on the phone, this will be installed over the built in one. You know what I mean, the bulit in is there running and my new launcher is there to... is it possibile to remove the original one and put a new one in?
I don't think it's possible because it's essentially the same as a stock launcher, you can't just remove it and have nothing there. This is what I believe to be true anyway.
As you know, you can run another launcher over the top, why don't you just do that? It doesn't cause any problems for you.

I don't want to do that because the RAM. This is the main reason... as I saw I got only 128 which is almost insufficient for running any other app on the phone...
You can try intalling a new launcher then uninstalling the system launcher.
Or you can install a new launcher as a system app. And uninstall system launcher.
Or install a new launcher as a user app and convert into system app and uninstall system launcher.

UPDATE
seems like I can't boot into CWM recovery with power + volume up + volume down
it says something like firmware upgrade failed... and dies... remove battery, put back and boot normaly... If I remain withouth a launcher and I won't be able to boot to CWM recovery to reinstall rom I'll softbrick my phone... :-S
Try using anttek app manager or titanium backup to freeze adw once you've installed a launcher you want. That will keep it out of memory, but it's easily undone.

Yap, you may want to try this, and since you're on CM7 I believe you have root acess.
So, install the launcher you want (it's not obligatory you use ADW)
Install Titanium Backup from the market.
Open TB and select 'Backup/Restore'
Scroll until you find the stock launcher (ADW in your case), select it and then choose Uninstall. You will have some warnings since it's a system app, no problem there.
After that just open the new launcher with the home button, it should do the trick
Cheers
I'll try this as soon as I got home...
But right now, how can I boot into recovery with clockworkmod?
I mean, from poweroff...
pressing those keys just boots into firmware upgrade...

In terminal emulator type "reboot recovery" without the quotes and hit enter. As long as you have busybox this should work.
Also, I said to freeze the app because it's easier to undo than if you uninstall it. Plus, you don't have to keep a backup on your SD.
Don't know about busybox. It said something about it while I rooted. Don't know if it's still there.
I'll try freezing it.
Still didn't figured out how to boot into recovery from power off.
Update:
Launcher frozen. Restarted. Everything works as expected. Maybe I'll uninstall it later.frozen with link2sd.
Same think can I do with android keyboard if I have another one?
UPDATE2:
If I don't have a launcher I can't even access terminal emulator. So, how to boot into CWM recovery from power off? Do I need to have USB cable in my phone connected to pc?

Can't help you on the recovery, sorry different device, I think it has a different way to boot :/
On the keyboard one, yes, you can do it to the keyboard also, but why deleting stock keyboard? It's good for having a backup when the custom fails.
But why do you lack a launcher? You should always have a launcher, of course without it you can't access anything.
You should first install the second launcher and then delete the first one, not the other way around :/

Yeah but I like to play safe so until I don't know how to boot into recovery I won't delete it...

You install another launcher BEFORE freezing the stock launcher.
Read my original post in this thread and you'll see that's what I wrote.
You'll need adb at this point. Install it, install the driver for your phone, use adb to push a launcher apk to either /system/app or /data/app. Also, you can use adb to enter recovery by typing "adb reboot recovery" without the quotes.
it's just that I don't trust myself
I've installed another launcher already...
Now... can you be a bit more open for the ADB thing?
I'm at work, here I can't install usb debugging...
as I understand, with ADB I got something like a terminal or thing like that and I cand send command to the phone

Correct. Install adb (google is your friend). Find the usb driver for your phone and install it on your home computer. Connect your phone through usb. Open a command prompt and cd (change directory) to the adb folder. Type adb devices. If a device number is returned, you can go from there. There are tons of useful commands.
One thing... I have u8180. But about phone says u8160. Since rooted and cm7 it's recognized as u8160 even by Google play. Hm as I see there is a work around. U8180/u8160 shares the same hw. So if adb will recognize it as one of them it will be OK?

By you giving a lot more info
You flash TWRP via CWM - TWRP is an alternative to CWM and is touch based. Put a launcher on your SD card, reboot into TWRP same as you would CWM, go into the file explorer, copy the launcher apk and paste it in your system/apps directory.

You can turn you phone on. Let it boot and leave it... even if seeing force close prompts. And try going on your computer and logging in the Playstore and install a third party launcher from your computer.
I'd leave to phone sitting for a bit to give it time to try and install.
Background: I deleted my only launcher once but was still able to access some apps. Example - long pressing search soft key with Super Manager installed - it would prompt to choose Volume Controls or Super Manager. Or long pressing the home soft key pops up recent apps.
Your phone should still be working, it just does not have a GUI interface or desktop for you to see.
Give it a shot.
-----
Or you can flash one of bhundven's Kernel One-Clicks, then flash a launcher or TWRP.

If you don't have cwm, how are you going to flash?
All stock apps are stickied in the themes ands apps section.

ROM manager problem on nexus 5

Hi all,
I have rooted my nexus 5 for some time already and have learned about some really basic understandings regarding ROMs and android. I do realize the usefulness of nandroid backup so i made one with the help of ROM manager and its clockwork recovery. A while ago i flashed cyanogenmod and It all worked out quite well but I eventually decided to have my stock android kit kat back by restoring the nandroid backup. Everything worked out and i was happy.
I copied the backup files from the "secure location" /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup and to the sd card using es file explorer and eventually to my computer using the USB cable. Today i learned about xposed framework and i thought i would give it a try so i intended to make a nandroid backup again using the same procedure with rom manager (since i did make a few tiny changes to my phone since the last backup).
Here's the problem:
The rom manager app failed to backup or do anything as nothing happened after i pressed the "Backup Current ROM" button and clicked ok to the backup name popout.Even the recovery setup and reboot into recovery choices at the top of the app don't do anything after i press them. And i was stupid enough to delete the first backup files from my phone so currently i only have the backup on my computer. I tried to copy my first backup files back into the /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup folder but the path is gone as the /mnt/shell/ folder is empty.
I am desperate for some answers and support regarding this issue. I realize this might not be a nexus 5 problem so i am willing to move this thread to anywhere that's appropriate.
Don't use ROM manager. I've seen a lot of people bootlooping their phones after using it. Flash Philz Touch recovery and then make a nandroid backup from the recovery. See whether /mnt/shell/emulated/0/clockworkmod/backup/ has your files or not?

If rom manager takes a backup using cwm recovery, then YES. You can restore it via Philz Touch. Copy the backup folder and put it in /sdcard/clockworkmod/. This is where all my Philz Touch backups are stored. If philz is using /data/media on your phone then clockworkmod folder will be present over there. You can toggle these paths in Philz Touch.
Philz will detect /data/media/0 as sdcard so need move /data/media/clockworkmod to /data/media/0/clockworkmod
