[Q] Is there a way change Auto brightness behavior without 3rd party apps ? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tried several different apps (the one I currently have is Lux Lite) but they don't always work right, even when they are in the notification area (which I hate). So I'm wondering if I could manually override the auto brightness behavior without using an app.
I'm already running n3oHammer_v16 custom Kernel, so I'm open to kernel based solutions (any kernel with good battery life and S2W or D2W is fine). I had a HTC One X with a custom ROM which had support for overriding Auto brightness values, so I'm guessing Nexus 5 should have something similar. But a quick search didn't turn up anything, hence the post.

Bump, no one ??

[R&D] Settings Screen Brightness API Issue

I am writing an application that changes the brightness, and I noticed that the Skyrocket does not return the proper values.
Using the Settings class if I call:
Settings.System.getInt(resolver,Settings.System.SCREEN_BRIGHTNESS);
25 is returned the first time regardless of the system brightness. If I call it again, then the proper value is returned.
Can you guys confirm or deny this issue? I've tested on another phone and emulator, which work as documented.
wrong thread somehow. wat.
My screen doesn't keep it's brightness settings when I use another program besides the built-in brightness changer in the Settings menu. If I set it low and I lock it, it always comes back up to full brightness after I turn it back on. Weird.
Seems that the T989 t-mo variant has the same issue with CM7's display tweaking utilities. Something in the hardware seems to always make it come back on at a hardcoded predefined brightness.
Hi,
As I recall from poking around the kernel source, there are some routines that intercept the value passed from the ROM and tweak it a bit before actually applying it to the screen.
Take a look at ./drivers/video/msm/lcdc_ld9040.c in the kernel source, IIRC there are some hardcoded values in here that might be resulting in your reading of 25 (I think there is a minimum value of 24 set somewhere in there, been a while since I looked)

app suggestion .. using back and menu buttons as noticication LED

coming from htc legend and xperia mini, the led notification lights was an important feature, now i really miss it in the note, and using noled app is not the same as having actual led lights.
so i was thinking if there is a possibility to use the menu and back buttons lights as notification light ? i found that they are separate from the screen light .. so can this be done by an app or a custom rom or it can't be done ?
This idea has already been implemented for many Samsung devices. Just find a custom kernel with "BLN" Support (BackLightNotification) and then download the app (info HERE) and away you go.
Hope that helps mate

check bLED
after i posted this i found out about bLED and bln kernel (i didn't know what bln means) thanks for your help
There is also noLED. Not one i use but you might aswell know all the options
I've read that they all hurt battery life
i tried noLED but i didn't like it
i know that bln might drain the battery faster but it's important for me, and maybe with further development some of the current problems might be fixed
NoLed is good, doesn't require root and only uses about 3% battery when enabled (and nothing if you switch it off). You can also customize the settings for additional power saving and I managed to get it down to 1% by setting the notification to flash on and off.
My only issue with NoLed is that from time to time it gives me the sleep of death. Disable it And my issues go away - haven't had time to test whether or not SoD is down to the power saving settings.

Cm7 Automatic Backlight Settings

I wrote down 2 pages and hit post but xda logged me out and now I'm really, let's say it, mad
Hello everyone.
Shorter version:
CM7
Pros:
1. Amazing battery life.
2. More options and settings (after all it is cm).
3. Nicer user interface.
4. Flash player 11 for arm6 is working perfectly.
5. No bloatware.
6. Fast enough and stable (not one fc so far).
Cons:
1. Front cam. Although back one is working fine it would be nice to have a front one as well. Minor issue though, I don't use it anyway.
2. Fm Radio is always turning my bluetooth on when I start it and use it. Don't know if it is supposed to do that but it is a real battery drain and I don't want to use 3rd party apps if that is even possible. This is a minor issue since I don't use it often.
3. Led notification turns green at 90% and more when charging and my phone tricked me to unplug quite a few times Also a minor issue.
4. Default automatic brightness is just terrible. I know that they can be modified through cm settings>display>automatic backlight but I am not sure what values to enter to get the best and optimum results. I just cannot get them quite right.
So, to conclude. Cm7 is just great and really ready for daily use. I only need to set up the automatic backlight properly and this is where I need your help. If anyone knows the best values for these settings, please, write them down in this or the original cm7 thread.
Best wishes
I've set the status bar notification for backlight to 25/50/75/100. I feel that these values suit every possible condition.

Hi Alex, you must have misunderstood me. I'm not talking about those settings. I don't want to adjust brightness manually. I'm talking about window length, reset threshold, sample interval and custom light sensor levels so my phone can automatically adjust brightness. These can be found in cyanogen settings>display>automatic backlight
Regards
Ah, ok then.. Unfortunately I did not have the patience required to set/tweak them.

Lux affecting touch response

Is anyone having issues with Lux affecting touch response? When Lux is running, some of my inputs are completely ignored. For example, when I installed a 3rd party app, I couldn't click on "Install" until Lux was disabled. Another example was when I tried granting Titanium Backup root access; however, when I clicked the "Grant" button, nothing happened. It wasn't until I disabled Lux again that I could select it.
Is there a solution to this issue?
and why are you using LUX? The auto brightness works well in my case (6045Y EU version).

I use Lux and have not encountered those issues. I also use TitaniumBackup

Some of us prefer Lux over the built in method. The phone has battery saving built in as well but I still prefer to run my personal choice. Lux does alot more than then default allowing Auto, Day, Night, Car and Cinema light profiles in addition to full tasker support which lets me pretty much do whatever I want with it.

of course it does, but i think in end effect your batter lifre will be max. 8% above mine
I use lux on every phone. On Idol 3 (4.7) it worked very odd but no troubleshooting. I could not get the light right so I've switched to front camera source (luma). Maybe this could help you too

I like using lux because I can lower the brightness beyond the default value and I like the nightmode.

Thanks for the reply; I found an alternative overlay option that I think addresses my issue.

Does the front camera work better than the light sensor?
So i used a nexus 6 with a custom rom and luxinstalled. I have the exact same issue, it only seems to happen when manually installing an APK or granting root access to a application. This has happened with every rom ive used. I think it is something with Lux. Not sure what though...

Sory for the late reply. For me, it does.

Question Adaptive brightness on GSI?

My concern is adaptive brightness not working on GSI ROM (not even one)
I have LineageOS 19.1 and adaptive brightness ain't working (had Pixel Experience and AOSP, but doesn't work either).
I have also tried "force alternative backlight scale" - that only enables brightness to be changed
I have read and found the one way about overlays' /vendor/overlay stuff, but overlay is already there, folder permissions are 755 and APK permissions are 644. And mo matter how much reboots or termux commands still nothing... Also found treble-overlay-samsung-galaxy-a53.apk in root files but that one also doesn't seem to solve the problem.
Night Light works perfectly, still don't get why adaptive ain't working.
I've seen people on GSI roms on this forum, so help would mean a lot.
Same problem here. I heard that overlay require root so I didn't try it since I dont want to root my device.
Any help would be appreciated
If its the same as my other Samsung phone and if I remember correctly then its due to the adaptive brightness being custom implemented for Samsung's official rom that isn't compatible with unofficial roms. Something like that.
Either way, its just how it seems to be with custom roms. You can set low brightness if you want it and less battery usage and if low brightness is offered.
Since I'm not working on the rom, I could be wrong for this phone. But, since you bring up its not working here, it seems like its probably it.
