WTF is wrong with my phone?!?! - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It started about a week ago when I downloaded the "myfitnesspal" app. My battery started draining really fast, prior to the app I was getting 2 days of battery life, and after I am getting less than a full shift at work. I tried freezing the app and it didn't fix anything. I downloaded the better battery stats app to see what was going on, and it seems like my phone never sleeps, but I really don't know how to use the battery app. I'm attaching some pictures if anyone has any a advice, i'd appreciate it. Thanks..... Only 39 minutes of screen on and it killed 75% of my MAXX battery!!!

Something is holding your phone awake (over 5 hours from what Better Battery stats is saying) Try downloading Wakelock Detector and see what app is holding your phone awake.

Some app is keeping ur phone awake and using the WiFi continuously in that process... Maybe that's why your phone doesn't go into deep sleep mode... Are you rooted?!? Try Greenify... Its pretty good.. It helps hybernate apps that you aren't actively using....

Got it sorted out. It was the"myfitnesspal" app, Just as I basically knew. BUT..., freezing the app didn't do anything. I had to actually fully uninstall it and reboot.
Thanks for the suggestion of the wake lock app. I never heard of it, and it could be useful later also

major battery drain any ideas its ridiculous

hello guys,
I have the wifi model xoom rooted with stock rom. My battery life after the first week having my xoom has been terrible. So last week I rooted it and my battery life was tremendous because i didint have many apps on it. I've been slowing adding apps day by day and monitoring so that if I use any battery killers ill be aware. Well battery has gone to crap once again. Last night I charged it to 100 percent, i then took it off the charger and turned airplane mode on. I let it sit there untill around 10am. when i picked it up it was at 69percent charged with 70% of the battery being used from "tablet idle". I freaked out so I downloaded a screenshot app but by that time the tablet idle went down to 44percnt and 34 percent was screen on. anyone have any suggestions as to why those are percentages are so high when my tab is just chillin... btw i just downloaded baddass battery monitor. Thanks.
I'm using a custom rom as you can see in my signature and my battery life is quite good and I have many apps installed. It takes any rom a while to settle down. I can't speak to stock rom because I haven't run stock in over a year. It sounds like you are doing the right things though...pay attention to whatever might be syncing in the background...that can be a big battery drain.
Checkout betterbatterystats. Its free on XDA (somewhere). It gives you a breakdown of exactly what is waking your device.
*edit* just noticed you downloaded something similar. Just comb through that and try to find out what is waking your tablet so much.

One of the thing that I always try to be careful about my Xoom is having wireless disabled at all times I'm not using it. I've notice that since I've been doing so, my battery life has stretched further and further than when I leave it on.
Apps usually check for the network state, but this doesn't consume as much battery cycles as if the wireless would be on searching for signal while your not using it.
OP...it sounds like a rogue app of sorts.
Purchase Autostarts from the market and disable processes you don't need running at startup. It could help.
I've noticed that a lot of certain apps like to be started even though I don't need them running all the time. It could be an app running during different circumstances as well.
Let us know if this works.

1) root your device.
2) follow the steps in the below link to flash the best rom ever made for motorola xoom 3G. if you have a wifi version, then install the wifi version rom only.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459641
3) go to market, buy startup Manager app. and install it. remove unwanted apps from its GUI but keep superuser / supersu.
4) go to market and buy juice defender ultimate. install it and configure it as aggressive mode.
Only then, you will the difference. if Motorola promised you with 10 hours battery life, this will give an extra 2 hours

[VERIZON] Absolutely Horrible Battery Life

My only concern when buying this phone was battery life compared to my Razr Maxx. I was expecting it to be shorter...... but not this much!
I have tried restarting and clearing cache+dalvik. It seems to keep happening.
Eesh that is definitely not normal. I have the Verizon GS3 and get far better battery life.
I would suggest a factory reset. That seems to work for some people. Otherwise I'd suggest getting a replacement.

I love these sort of posts. You obviously have a wake lock that is keeping your processor active when not in use. Download "BetterBatteryStats" from the market and check out your wake locks and partial wake locks. It will be petty obvious at that point. It's most likely a rouge app.
It isn't a systemic problem with the phone. I get around 20 hours with slightly more than moderate use.

can you elaborate more on this? i downloaded the program and I dont see anything irregular at all. when i go to "partial wake locks" i see audioout only taking up 2.4% TOTAL TIM, 7M51S and the next one being dropboxcpuolywakelock
next one being backup, so on and so forth, none above 2%....
I am experiencing the exact same battery life drain as the op...except i have the tmobile version

I had the same issue the other night. Took it off the charger and fell asleep.... when I woke up over 1/4 of my battery was gone. Android System showed the same high percentage used. I went into apps, android system, force stopped it, rebooted.. Hasn't crept back up since.
From my understanding, under idle, android system should be in the 5-10% range.
I did a full system reboot, pulled battery and restarted - all better. Something was tripping my battery up as well. It's not the phone, somethings causing it.

I have Verizon GS3 and battery life is great. I too had an issue with battery drainning fast on my GS3 but found out it was Enhanced Mail Apps that I was using that killed my Battery so I uninstalled it. After the uninstall, my battery life has been great. You really can't compare battery life between Mot Raze and GS3. GS3 is far superior.
There must be an apps that is draining your battery.
Here is my battery stats. This is with moderate use.

That is far from normal.
100% LTE. Moderate with periods of heavy use. I would run a few cycles to see if your battery performance improves. Also, as other users have stated, keep running BetterBatteryStats for a few days and it will keep catching the wakelocks you're getting. If you still can't figure out the problem, I would seek a replacement battery from Verizon just to be sure.
Edit: Forgot to mention this before. If you haven't yet, plug your phone in and charge the battery to 100% with the phone powered down completely. Then let it run all the way down before charging it again. Doing this once effectively "trains" the battery to better read its full capacity and won't hurt the overall life of the battery. This is something that I find is often missed with new batteries, but I have had great results with.

Thanks for the replies... i did a factory reset and did not use Titanium to restore the apps in case one of them was causing the drain.
I'm still getting random drains by "gsiff_daemon" (which i'm seeing others having issues with this too). Fortunately this drain is fixed by a simple reboot. Yesterday I was able to get just under 15 hours of what i'd call light'ish use (under an hour of cached Spotify, WiFi all day, 10 minutes of phone calls, 30 SMS) and was at about 5%. Keep in mind I had about an hour in there where good 'ol gsiff was suckin down the battery (It took about 20% in 45 minutes).
The final test for me is this weekend. If it can last a whole day with my moderate/heavy usage.... i'm keeping it. Otherwise, its back to the Maxx.
This doesn't address the root cause of something preventing the phone from sleeping, but I thought I would mention an app that helps extend battery life. Personally I get great battery life regardless of any "saver" apps, and have never gotten less than 12 hours on a full charge, and that was very heavy use. I probably average closer to 20 on moderate-heavy use.
Anyway, as some know there are apps that will automatically turn off your data connection while the screen is off. Most turn the connection on for 1 minute, every 15 minutes while the screen is off so that you still receive email, ect... This does not affect phone calls and text messages, as they do not use apn and would be received immediately. These products can significantly extend battery life with little complication, particularly if you stay connected to LTE all the time. As an example, overnight I might lose about 20% of my battery or more while sleeping. With one of these apps I lose only about 4-6%.
I personally like the BatteryDefender app, very simple to use, and very reliable.

P6210 - Huge Battery Drain on ICS

Anyone experiencing battery drain on ICS? I upgraded, rooted, and removed some of the bloatware to help. Thought it was fixed but my tab is dead again. Says the Android OS is taking up my juice. Was never a problem before. Could leave it on standby for days with HC. Now its dead in a day or less.

I initially saw similar behavior, but once I killed the cached processes once, and since have shut down to charge and started new, I haven't seen that behavior.
Do you have WiFi on? Could it be you have apps that are checking to be updated? I know in the past on my phone my Amazon Appstore has a habit of starting itself up and continually checking for updates for itself and for any apps I got from Amazon.
Tried it both ways...wifi on and off.
Try using CPU spy (free in market) or betterbatterystats (free- search for it here on XDA) to see what is eating up your battery exactly.

I noticed that I had a conflict between "Power Savings" settings and the "Display" settings. Putting them both at 1 minute resulted in an always on screen I had to disable the Power Savings to correct the problem.
I did have something odd happen yesterday that seems to have kept my screen on for 4 hours. When I got home and opened my case the tab was very warm, and shut off. And all but entirely out of power, before that it has used about 10 % in 17 hours of standby with about an hour of use, or so.
I think it is possible that an app that previously didn't keep the screen on is now for some reason keeping it on, and I didn't notice when I closed the leather cover.
No issues today, but I am going to try and see if I can find some release notes to tell me about the new download for ICS for the P6210, perhaps this is addressed?
Just to update I installed the betterbatterystats. I showed a couple of things that were keeping my tab awake. Once I fixed those I thought that would be it but it was still draining. I then installed juice defender and had it turn wifi off every time I turned the screen off. That did it. Was never like this before the update but at least its good to know I fixed it.
i suggest checking better battery stats for AudioOut_1 Partial Wakelock. its been draining my phone fast when i upgraded to ICS.
check it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1629346
now my battery is working great.. i just left my tab for 10 hrs in the locker when i got the tab its still have 97% battery.
for me i just checked and changed my wifi sleep policy from never to when screen turns off and its fine now. :highfive:
I thought about this very issue; I decided to wait.

Did you download the ICS as opensource? Myself, I am deciding to wait for the OFFICIAL verson to be released.
I had the same problem. i even went back to HC to make sure
the issue is not there (it wasn't) and upgraded to ICS
again (full wipe all the time). No luck something keeps
my device unable to go to deep sleep.
Now i'm back at HC again

The version is OFFICIAL .
It's just available only for some countries.
i had the huge battery drain issue while in stock ICS..
the tablet simply refused point blank to go into deep sleep.. in HC it would but not in ICS.. i would take the tablet fully charged to work and not use it much there.. by the time i was travelling back it would be 60% drained in not using it througout the day...
recently flashed to aorths CM9 build and all my battery woes are gone.. now when i get back from work the battery is at 96%!!
battery drain during usage is the same but the CM9 build has awesome battery conservation stuffs for when you dont use it..
would suggest everyone who has these battery issues to move to CM9.. really helped for me.

Early results show Juice Defender is helping a lot with mine too. Thanks for the tip!
Next morning: Just the free version of Juice Defender using the default profile took me from 35% overnight drain yesterday down to 3% overnight drain today. That's not bad. It should be even better tomorrow because I've turned off all location services after seeing that BetterBatteryStats says Google location is the worst single offender at keeping wifi going overnight.

Could you tell me how you "killed cached processes" please?
I am having similar battery drain. I am in the process of completely charging battery after it drained 40% in sleep mode last night, wifi off in sleep mods, notifications off, sync off.
I have already done a reset to factory, tried draining battery, and recharged in off position.
Nothing is helping so far. I have installed better battery stats, and CPU spy this morning, and will have data tomorrow morning.
thanks for any help

I had the same exact problem ever since the stock ICS update. My Tab Plus is all stock, no mods at all. The battery would completely drain after one day, and I have very little on the Tab Plus. Nothing helped at all, so I finally bit and did a factory wipe. The battery drain stopped immediately, so I started changing the settings back to the way I like it.
Then, next day the battery went completely dead again! I back tracked and figured out exactly what it is which makes absolutely NO SENSE - turning off wifi in sleep was what was draining the battery! See my screen captures. Notice on the first screen shot, as soon as the wifi stays on the battery drop bar stayed almost flat.
I observed a similar behavior on my 100% stock AT&T GS3 phone also, turning wifi off during sleep causes more battery drain.
I'm getting "suspend backoff" under kernel wakelocks which is preventing my tab going to deep sleep when unused. Everytime I wakeup in the morning my tab is dead. The only solution I found was to turn off wifi if I'm not using it. Anyway fixing this?

Snapdragon Battery Guru app. Any good?

I came across the official Qualcomm Snapdragon Battery Guru app in the Play Store the other day. I've installed it but it's still in "learning mode" so I can't comment on it's effectiveness yet.
Is anyone using it with their Razr HD? Any feedback yet?
I was using Juice Defender Plus but it's become a bit unstable lately. I'll give this a go for a while and if it helps...

Can't speak for the HD, but when I had the DNA it worked really well for me. I saw a 30-40% increase in battery life; post learning mode.

I'll report back, I just installed it and giving it a go.
At times helpful, at times annoying.
It kinda estimates when you're at home/office and turns on WiFi, which is nice if you don't want to have it On all the time, but once it learns certain habits, it will be constantly turning on WiFi, and it's kinda annoying to take the phone out of your pocket while in the streets, and having it search for WiFi networks when you're clearly not near one.
One of friend with us cellular galaxy s3 tried the battery guru app few days ago but his experience was not good. He experienced significant battery drain after installing this app. BTW i will try it with my razr hd soon...

If that's what it does, that's the exact same thing as Motorola SmartActions.
Yeah, I'm wondering if it actually does anything differently to SmartActions or Juice Defender. From what I can see, it seems to do the same things, just a bit more automated. I was kinda hoping that it might have some power management features specifically for Snapdragon processors, but I haven't seen any evidence of that so far...
My battery usage seemed a lot worse than usual today. 17 hours off charge and I'm on 9%. Moderate usage at worst today. No games or YouTube our music. Just emails, Facebook and some browsing. I'm usually over 50% on a day like today when I'm using juice defender....
At this rate the battery guru won't be lasting long.

Does the app show up specifically in your batter usage stats?
Mine's been OK so far, still in learning mode. I'm currently at 2 days and 3 hours with 2 hours of on screen time. I'm of course running a Razr Maxx HD so this kind of battery life is normal for me. I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary.

No it doesn't show up in the battery stats. Android OS was the number 1 user last night, the screen was number 2, but I don't remember the percentages. Looks like something might have been keeping it awake yesterday as I'm sure "phone idle" is usually in the top 3, but it wasn't yesterday...
I don't think the app will do much during learning mode. I certainly didn't notice any difference to my normal usage when it was in learning mode...
matt
I tired this app in my LG optimus G...Usually my mobile doesnt get into deepsleep mode nd consumes lot of power.....after i installed this app while it was in learning mode i uninstlled it and ma mobile suddenly enters the deep sleep mode nd got awesome bettry backup.....i did restart nd ma mobile came back to original state...no deepsleep mode now.... again i reinstalled the app nd testing...!!
Well I was able to get through the initial learning phase. In the end, it does exactly the same thing as Motorola SmartActions...just turns stuff on and off depending on where you are..that sort of thing. I also didn't notice any significant battery drain while using it...not sure why others would have that problem.
In the end I uninstalled it because I really don't need 2 apps doing the same thing.

[Q] Way to find out why phone not deep sleeping?

I am running Skyfall with stock kernel. I was getting decent battery life, but today noticed that phone was awake for 2 of the 4 hours that it was off the charger. I have gsam and wake detector and wake detector shows nothing crazy that wakes it. I did disable location reporting, so maybe that might be pissing off some apps? I have not installed any new apps, only change was location reporting.
Thanks in advance.

It seemed like it. I installed it while I still had BBS running. While I was running GSAM my awake time was about 2.5 hours out of just under 4 hrs total and the phone was just in my pocket most of the time. After I removed it and rebooted the awake time stayed proportional to the time I was actually using it. Other than turning on WiFi optimization I can't think of anything else I did. So it may have been either one but I didn't have WiFi optimization on before I installed GSAM and my battery life was okay.

I have tried with and without gsam. I flashed the lastest firmware and radios and also the snapdragon app that monitors your use and is supposed to save on battery and today I got 3 hours of SOT, off charger for 16 hours and still have 55% left. And wake time back down to normal use. Im about to flash the latest Skyfall so we will see how things go on that build.
So started getting bad wake locks again. I looked and saw media server using a good portion. I have 0 media on my phone as I just stream. Anyone else seeing this issue?
