Hi all,
So it's a few days the power button seems to be kaput! The phone only wakes up by removing and re-inserting the battery and after the screen turns off there is no way to turn it on again (unless I receive a call for example). So first I thought I'd just replace the power key as I thought it would be just a clip-on circuit but no! it's soldered to the main board.
Right, next thought was to look whether Touch Control / Sweep 2 Wake-Sleep etc. is possible. I've used this feauture on newer Nexus devices so hoped something would be available for poor old I9023 as well. However, bponury's T/C app is not available for Nexus S and I can't seem to find any S2W/S2S kernel either. It's a long time since I was following Nexus S development closely so is there something similar that will allow me to not throw away the phone or am I looking in vain?
Thanks!

Volume Rocker Wake should be a custom rom's option I suppose? I will look into it.
Regarding remapping search button, I've searched at Play for "button remap" but seems this kind of apps have disappeared! Any link?

This might be sort of an overkill solution....
Install SlimBean 4.2.2 ROM. It has volume rocker wake AND button remapping.
I've been using the ROM since months and haven't used the power button at all.

Hi all,
Is there a tweak or something that allows for other ways to wake the phone from standby?
At the moment i have found that removing the stylus or opening the keyboard is the only way to wake the phone, to me this is kind of a odd behavior.
What if i want to make a one handed phone call, the above methods for bringing the device back to life is uncomfortable at best.
The mode i describe as standby is keys locked and screen powered down, in a perfect world i would like to press home and have the screen power up "dimmed" so that i can see where the unlock buttons are and go from there.
Is there a solution to this?
Im new to phones of this sort so if there is a generic solution i am not aware of it
Since nothing of relevance came up during my search im guessing that i am the only one who sees this as a problem?
Press the power button
ohh
Thank you
that was really funny but it's okay..
I press my bluetooth hands-free button for that.
OK with bluetooth hands-free button but starts voice dialer too.

Could you please be more specific for the newbies here; i.e. from what height should you drop it, what surface is more effective (concrete, damp grass, wood chips?), should you let it just drop from your hand or actually throw it, etc
Thanks.
to be certain of dropping it properly you should do it from at least a 5th floor window, tho 8th is reccomended.
i believe the best place to try to wake the phone from standby would be the empire state building. always works like a charm when i throw my phones, laptops and tv`s to wake up (others)
I dropped my phone from the 8th floor, but now it "crashed"
Interesting to see that you found a thread that has been dead for 6 weeks just to make fun of the issue i had.
My bet is that you searched yourself to this thread since you had the same "problem" as i did
all joking aside he actually had a good question. we all know the power button wakes up the phone, however i would like to know if there is a way to have the center d-pad button wake the phone up instead of or in addition to the power button.

I would like this or just a simple tap on the screen should wake it. I think there should also be a "screen lock" when it sleeps like the Iphone
i found then when your on a call and the screen turns off, you can wake it back up by press down on the scroll wheel.

I was thinking of mapping it to PTT, but center d-pad button would be even better and intuitive. Is there a way to do this mapping?
not sure, im sure anything is possible here at XDA. if it is possible im sure someone here can figure out how to do it.
Mapping PTT to "wake up" Fuze
Does any one know whether it is possible to map PTT (short press) to wake up fuze from standby. It's not all that convenient to reach the power button with one-hand operation.
I just picked up a used AT&T Fuze, it works fine, but whenever I switch it on for a couple of minutes it acts as though the volume button is being held down (or the volume icon on the screen being used).
After looking into it further it appears that the up volume button is not working (which probably explains why I could not get it to hard reset). Is there a link to taking apart the phone and cleaning the buttons? Or a link to somewhere to buy new buttons (been browsing eBay but having a hard time finding buttons amongst all the pink with hearts cases).
Thanks.
OK, so reading another thread I saw that someone who purchased this kit http://cgi.ebay.com/OEM-HTC-FUZE-LC...wItemQQptZPDA_Accessories?hash=item3ef8817bf6
Had to move the volume rocker button over from their old LCD Digitizer to the new one, since I am assuming that the rocker button simply pushes on a contact behind the button itself, is it safe to believe that if I ordered this part I could move my volume rocker over and have a working up volume button again?
Thanks.
One of the down sides of having such a large screen is the amount of travel your finger has to do to get to the power switch to turn the display on.
is there a hack or an app that can allow me to customize the capacitative buttons (home, menu, back, search) to turn on the phone? (not from a power off state, but from a suspend state)?
Other potential solutions could be remapping either of the volume keys, or maybe using the accelerometer to determine the orientation of the phone and then wake up the screen.
Yes, I am looking for the same thing. The power button on Inspire is not that well designed. I can't really tell if i am pressing it or now. I am afraid the button will broke since it doesn't have the press down feeling. I think everyone has the same problem on this button.
I think only midgets and girls have this problem. Are you a midget or a girl?
lol jk
try widgetlocker
you can wake up phone with volumes button !
Thanks in advance!
WidgetLocker has the ability
Just tried it, checked the box in settings, but no dice
Uninstalled and got a refund.
Any others?
no lock?
or
Screen Off and Lock?
Thanks, already tried both of them because they worked on my og evo, but no such luck
Coming from the galaxy s2 I do miss the power button on the side, hoping to find a solution still

Actually, I used to have a Nexus One and the power button was broken. To circumvent that, I had to use an app called AnyUnlock. I turned the screen on with the volume rocker and you could also use a widget to turn the screen off (rather than using the power button to turn the screen off). Which I suppose could be useful if you have smaller fingers or something and didn't want to make the reach. Very, very useful app when your power button stops functioning.

I'm sure it uses the same method that the other apps use and it even says in the description on their app page that it only works on Froyo and GB.
Yea seems like all of them don't work with ics urrrrrrrrr

I was actually wondering this very same thing earlier today. Hope someone finds a solution.

Volume Rocker Wake works on CM9 Alpha 5
I've been using CM9 Alpha 5 for a few hours now and it's great !
The first think I set was the Volume Rocker Wake as the Power Button is not as easy to press when using most cases covering the power button.
To enable it, go to SETTING --> DISPLAY --> VOLUME ROCKER WAKE
it enables waking the phone by pressing the volume rocker EITHER up/down.
There is no way to specify one or the other
However, it works great ! I'm really liking CM9, my only complaint is the missing HTC Camera which was just amazing with the hardware burst (I'm still looking for a way to flash it if that's even possible).
The power button of my i9023 completely died so I remapped the search button as power button by modifying the key layout file in /system/usr/keylayouts/ but it seems that hardware touch keys are inactive when the screen is off.
Is there a way to enable them? I already tried adding the WAKE flag but it doesn't work.

These keys are not kept on when the screen is off. You'd be better using something such a volume wake (wake phone by pressing vol + or -) instead. Lots of roms have it in their options.

I already have the volume wake but it doesn't work when listening to music so I installed Tap Tap to unlock also with the proximity sensor; this thread was more for curiosity and aesthetic reasons than for real need.
So, from what I understand, that behaviour is hardware related thus impossible to be changed by software.
Hm, I have one question, is something like this:[KERNEL]Slide 2 Wake possible on our device?

I believe it would need to be implemented in the kernel. I don't think anybody took the time to check deep enough to do that for our Nexus.
Kinda wish we had it too.
