rebuilding partitions / cm10 / low memory - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am referencing this post to try and get more info from a broader audience if possible
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544702
heres the issue:
I wiped fully my p3113 several times correctly... (data / system / cache / dalvik / etc etc)
installed latest cm10 nightly
i get only 4.59gb onboard ram (see the screenshot in the above link)
apparently the cat who wrote the threat above was able to rebuild the partition to solve this problem... my question is, how does one rebuild the partitions??? which ones need to be rebuilt? can i do it within cwm or do I have to do it within odin?
thanks!!!!!!!!!

First off, don't mix up RAM and internal storage, these are different things! What you are talking about is not RAM. Second, 4.5GB of user-accessible storage is all you get on this tab - it's normal, there is nothing wrong with that! The other thread you are linking to is about a different problem - if you read carefully, you'll see that the OP was only having 500MB available out of 4.5GB. That was the problem he fixed. You have nothing to fix, don't mess with your device.

thank you brother.... my question then is why when I have the stock rom installed does the memory show up as being 8gb internal and only 4.59 with cm10?
is cm10 actually taking up over 3gb of space? and if this is the case what is the best way to use the ext card as the memory to which I install my apps? there is nothing that I have seen that works with cm10 in the memory swap area.

I don't know much about CM, but on every version and flavour of stock ROMs that I tried on my tab (and I tried quite a few), I always got around 4.5GB of storage available. Also, this is what I recall reading from the specs somewhere. Frankly, I can't understand just how you would get 8GB reported by the system to be accessible, whether on stock, or any other ROM... On all devices, accessible internal storage is always significantly less than the total - for example, on my phone the accessible storage is only 25GB out of a total of a 32GB.
A couple of screenshots to illustrate my point (stock-based 4.1.2).
BTW, I'd like to ask anyone to provide a screenshot from any ROM on this tablet, showing a larger amount of available storage. Really, I would very much like to see that.

thank you so much for the feedback. what rom are you using and how do you not run out of space for apps? are you not using an apps to sd script or app then?

No problem. The link to the ROM I am currently using is in my signature. How I don't run out of space -- I dunno... I just don't. I am not an app junkie, and I don't install or use any games, so everything works fine for me so far. I am also not using any scripts or apps to swap int/ext SD, or to install apps on ext SD card. The biggest space hogs for me are offline maps (I use Maps With Me and Nav Free) and multimedia (photos, music, videos), and I keep those on my ext SD card.

do you have the 8gb variant or 16gb? also when your running stock rom are you using 4.2.2 jb? if so then thats why it shows up as 8gb. with previous version of the stock firmware it used to show up as split partition 4gb for system and 4gb for internal until samsung offically released 4.2.2 for the GT-p3113

Damn Samsung bastads. This was driving me insane as I just flashed mine last night and thought at first I F'ed it up, then I was going to blame the OS CM-11 for not reporting the full space. sigh this one little sentence puts me at ease. For that, I thank you :good: :highfive:

What does it show when you do settings/storage ? That one is accurate for me.

Here are the complete details which shows about the memory :
In Task Manager it is showing : System Storage -> 10.24GB/11.87GB
From Settings > Storage :
Total Space : 11.77GB
Apps : 1.39GB
Pictures, videos : 213MB
Audio : 0.91 GB
Downloads : 20.01MB
Miss : 1.52 GB
Available : 1.52 GB
From settings > Application Manager :
Device memory : 10GB Used
1.7GB free
cache...
Not sure if you have already tried this... Use a good cache cleaner and check if something is taking up space in cache
Also are you using link2SD ? If yes let us know..
Connect the Tab to computer and check how much free space it shows in explorer...if it too shows 10GB used then definitely somewhere a big file is taking up space...
Last thing that comes to my mind is , install " SD Maid " and there is a option to list Top 50 Biggest size file...please check if that helps
any workaround?

You know guys, I already found the answer to this and posted it for all to find. I cannot take credit for this, another fellow got irritated that his kid could not install games anymore, so he figured it out. The answer is not all that bad and is easy, and quick.
Use ClockworkMod ROM Manager to boot into recovery. Use the menu to format your internal SDCard. Reboot. You will loose all of your apps and have to start over, but your Google account will recover and put back everything in fairly short order. Mine completely restored itself in about ½ an hour. Sweet!
Losing all storage on the internal card is a very, very frustrating thing and it drove me nuts for longer than it should have. My girl was SO upset that I would lose all of her game progress that I could not update for a while until I used Titanium Backup to backup all the stuff on the tablet. Titanium Backup restored all of her game data so that she would not have to play Jewels Star from the beginning again, she already cleared all 3 major hard board and gained a bonus board of 100 more levels. Lose that and man I would be dead meat. Titanium put it all back, thank God. Another bad thing is the apps would not even update anymore, no room. Oh, baby is here now, time for bed.
Please, click the Thanks button if this post helps you! Night night everyone.
One question - is formatting internal SD safe? Won't it delete system or something? I don't need to flash rom or anything else after that?

'Internal SD' is a separate partition of the internal memory away from 'system' partition. So no worries that you will screw anything up by formatting internal SD.

[Q] Unlocking and Rooting

Hello,
I am from India and I just happened to read this thread. I have a few questions and I appreciate If you could answer them.
I purchased a new nexus 5 32 GB. Now, I am afraid to do rooting as it could void my warranty.
I would like to know how to install apps to the external storage. Since Nexus 5 comes without an sd card(sealed sd card). How do I access this sd card, becuase If I install any app. It just installs(currently, it tells 350mb and 26 GB free). Now, is this telling me that 350 MB is being used on sd card.
Secondly, where can I check the amount of RAM being used ?
Regards,
Avi
If you don't want to root, don't. As for your other question, I don't understand... There is no external storage. Unless you get an otg like meneevo but you can't install apps to that. Everything runs off the internal. 32 GB should be more than enough unless you install like 1000 apps...

Hello,
Thanks for the reply. But I still have some doubts.
If I install any app from play store, By default, where it will install, in the internal 32 GB Memory or on the 2GB RAM ?
Because, my intention is that whatever apps I install, It should by default install in the 32GB internal storage and not on the 2GB RAM. How to do this ? If any screenshot helps, please let me know.
Regards,
Avi
they are installed in 32 gb not ram lololololo.....

Apps will only install on the phones memory and never the RAM. RAM means how many apps you can have open on the phone at one time (multitask). For example you can have Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Browser, etc all open at one time without the phone crashing or running sluggish. RAM is basically the towing capacity of a pick up truck.
The phone memory is basically a car trunk filled with groceries (data, pictures, videos, apps, etc). The larger the car trunk, the more groceries you can put in it before you run out of storage and have to put it in the back seat/front seat (external SD or OTG).
In short, you have 32gb and all your apps will be downloaded ONLY to the 32gb.

Hello,
If it is that all the apps will be downloaded to 32 GB internal memory, then why would anybody use link2sd apps, because the main intention is that nothing goes to phone memory(2 GB) and all of them goes to 32gb internal memory. I believe that link2sd apps is probably not for nexus 5 phone at all and only for other smart phones.
One thing, I would like to tell is that I downloaded the link2sd app(hoping that this could increase the phone performance). Here, when I launch the app, for few apps, it tells that the app can be moved and tells that symbolic link is not found ? Does this make all sense what I am saying ?
What is your take on this ?

Avinash

Link2sd is not for our phone. Its for phones that support external SD. We have internal SD and no external SD (micro SD slot)! Delete Link2sd and enjoy your phone. Don't worry about storage space. You should have more than enough storage space unless you download a lot of songs, movies etc. I have over 200 songs on my phone and I have a lot of storage left! I have the 32gb model also.

Unlocking and Rooting
Hello,
Thanks for all the reply. All my answers are answered pretty well.
What I understand is unlocking and rooting is required only when custom roms and link2sd need to be installed, As far as Nexus 5 is concerned, would unlocking and rooting help as already I am running kitkat 4.4 latest build.
Also, I have some queries related to apps, would you mind If I post it here or I should create a different post.
Regards,
Avi
You cannot use link2sd as there's no sd slot so no, root will not help.

There is much more than link2sd which requires root, link2sd is used on phones with almost very less internal memory so no use on nexus 5..….if u are newbie just keep ur phone stock and read and carefully understand about rooting and unlocking from xda and later you can try them

[Q]SOLVED! CM11 m3 ( and cm10.2 stable) internal memory out of space?

Team, I was really enjoying my cm10.2 and i was running out of space.. like 5gb total, maybe 1gb used per storage screen in settings and it says 1gb free.. on top of that it says im running out of space.. i did notice it is showing my sd card music and pictures being listed in the internal memory when in fact its on my sd card.. This seems to be chewing up 3gb+ i need for apps etc..
So I flashed cm11 m3, which i actually really like so far.. but its suffering from the same issue.. can someone help me repair this? googling it has not helped any.. ( ps i did factory wipe before flashing cm11 in recovery)

Check your application data usage in settings|apps, also check to see if you have any CWM made backups. That's often stored outside of the directory trees that android itself normally looks at (/data/media/clockworkmod) Also if it's saying your music and such is on your internal storage than it probably is. Check using a file manager, and manually move that stuff to your SD card.

[Q] I accidentally skipped S-OFF and I've lost 3GB of space.

Hey, guys.
Forgive me if there's already a thread for this, or if I've posted in the wrong spot, but I seem to be in a tricky predicament.
I flashed Venom ROM on my HTC One SV, and accidentally forgot to do the S-OFF thing on my phone.
Now, my phone only recognizes 1GB internal storage instead of 4GB. This is annoying because I can't even update my apps because it says there's not enough storage space.
What do?
Is there a way to get that 3GB back without doing an S-OFF and wiping everything, or at least a method to make everything automatically install to the SD card?
Cheers,
Anthony
EDIT: I've attached a few screenshots.
If i get your pictures right, this is the normal state of your phone and has nothing to do with S-off.
The phone needs some space for the Android OS and the rest of internal storage is partitioned this way by HTC.

The OS shouldn't take up 3GB of space. The device comes up with all of that free space in Windows, but it's not showing all of it on the phone.

There is an app called app2sd. Could try that.
I would suggest formating a portion of your external sdcard as ext4. Use that portion for your apps. Even better, and I don't wish to make a guide on it, but you can also use the swap format as additional ram, also known as virtual memory. Should an app or daily activities on your device begin to run low on ram then it can pull from the virtual memory on your external sdcard thus giving an increase in speed. I did this to my sdcard. 8 gig card but 1 gig is used as swap for virtual memory to help keep my device running smooth when developing on my phone. Some of my stuff can get to be cpu hogs ha!
Of course, you would need to do some research if you are unaware on how to do this.
It's really easy so I guess if you are interested in the swap I can give a brief and easy explanation but it's preferred that only experienced users do this.
Pics to show that I am using swap for virtual memory from my external sdcard.

merge data and internal sd

I have the infuse which has a16gb ROM with 12gb internal SD and a 2gb data partition and a galaxy s5 with 16gb ROM which has 12gb storage space that is shared between apps and internal SD. I was wondering if there is a way to setup the infuse to work like the s5 does or at least switch the internal 12gb SD card with the 2gb app storage space. I need lots of room for apps and don't ever even use the internal SD card as I have a 32gb external card in the phone so there is like 12 megs total in use on the internal SD while app storage is completely full with hardly any apps installed. Just kind of seems like a waste to me. Thanks in advanced for any help you might be able to give

Not that easy. You would have to re-route (comment out) the line for /data/data in the fstab file on the boot.img ramdisk. If using stock ROM, then you have to make sure all that is signed the way Samsung wants it.
There are some later KK 4.4 ROM's that ignore the datadata partition (my signature has a link that will provide options) but if you have the AT&T model (v.s. Rogers) and still on FY 2.2 or GB 2.3, there does not seem to be an upgrade path anymore (patched bootloader to flash ICS+ is lost).
A simple solution is to get a MicroSD card, split up that MicroSD with a ext2 second partition, and then use Link2SD. Mind you, the apps on the external SD would be slower, but at least you can get more apps that what you could before.
Hope this helps.
I have cyanfox 4.4 kitkat installed on it already. I know there is ways to use external SD as ext4 partition, is there any way to do something like that with internal SD instead.

You may be able to figure out a solution with FolderMount (or one of the other options in the following SII thread):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2548834
Alternatively...
I am curious though, how are your wakelocks? Is your Infuse able to fall asleep? This can be determined by going into Settings > Battery > History Details, and checking the blue bar under "Awake". If it spans the width underneath that title (and the screen has been off for a portion of the uptime), then you have a GMS bug, and is common with most 2014 KK ROMs.
Not to sway you particularly - I compiled a build in 2015 that not only abandons /datadata, but also fixes the GMS bug:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61012641&postcount=1060
May be worth it, even if only just looking at the post.
