When will I get 4.4.1? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The camera improvements sounds nice but.. It's been a few days and my Nexus 5 still hasn't updated yet. Is this just me or what?

No, it's not just you. If you're tired of waiting, you can easily sideload the update. If that's something you need help with, there are other threads on this forum that discuss it in more detail. You can also do a Google search for "How to sideload Kitkat 4.4.1 on the Nexus 5" and you'll see detailed, step-by-step instructions in the first link that comes up in the results. It worked for me on my first try and it's a lot quicker than waiting for the OTA update to arrive.

Why don't you just side load it? There are tutorials here that will help you out. The OTA is already available for download as a zip file. you just need to have adb up and running and you're good to go.

Eh I'm lazy. How hard is it to get a custom recovery on the Nexus 5? I haven't looked into it but my previous HTC phone was a terror.

Please read the existing threads, especially the stuck threads at the top of the forums... There's no need to create a new thread for this.

take it easy, u might hurt ur self
ok its not quite in the right place, but no need to bite his head off.
anyway, in answer to your question, the way i removed the branding from my vodafone DS was this
http://revolutionary.io/ download this tool and follow its instructions, this will root your phone and give you a recovery tool that will allow you to flash a new ROM onto your phone.
With the phone rooted, you will be able to back up your data using an app from the market. Titanium Backup is the usual favorite.
EDIT : may be wrong about it providing root, I personally skipped the backup step as I had no data to lose, but if that is the case there are guides in the forums for obtaining root access
next look through this forum to find a ROM that suits your needs, from the sound of things you want the stock one, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1230029 should suit you.
download the zip file and transfer it to your SD card.
next you need to reboot into your recovery mode by turning the phone off, then hold the vol down button and power button together and selecting recovery from the menu
finally use the volume buttons to select install zip from SD card, and point it at your downloaded rom. it may take a few mins so allow it to finish then select reboot phone.
again this first boot may take a little time, but once its up you should have a debranded ROM as if you had just bought the phone new.
Add the details for your google account and redownload your backup app so you can restore your data and you are good to go
thank you very much for your help,
I shall give it a try,
by the way, will be able to install official updates on it, or will I have to stick with custom ROMs for ever?
thanks again

Nooo, not forever. Just until you get a new device
But seriously: Custom roms don't work with official updates. The trick is that most of the custom rom developers provide their own flashable updates for their roms. The difference is in the way you perform the update. There are even fairly developed custom roms, like MIUI, which have their own over-the-air updates (actually more often than official updates are coming.)
EDIT: In fact, you can switch back to a stock rom anytime and get the official updates back.

although a lot of effort had been put into creating a lot of resources which are very user friendly, so it's quiet frustrating when they aren't even looked at.
Plus development is for just that, which is why the moderator moved the thread.

Once unlocked, i.e. rooted, you can use titanium backup or a root file explorer to uninstall the apps you don't need from the rom you are running atm.

Well, again: read around the forum a little, please. There is a sticky thread right on the top of the development section, called ROMS/RECOVERY/ROOT etc. It's a must read for newcomers. Very useful thread. There you find a link to a collection of stock roms. These are distributed as .exe files, so you can run them in windows and a simple-to-use installer will pop up and help you with pushing the stock rom to your phone. It is advisable that you double check that you are flashing the rom you really want. Someone here will help you to choose the right one.
EDIT: By the way in the general section (where we are now with this thread) there is also a very useful sticky. It's called Guide for Newcomers to Android. Seriously, it's a good read, given that you own an Android phone...

OK man, I will do that, thanks for the tips
Thanks chris5s, Ill definitely give it a shot.
This tool would help to get rid of the annoying Orange splash screen, and other useless apps could be removed as stated before.
Of course, best way is to install generic HTC European rom or custom rom of your choice.
Aforementioned tool would also help install roms, radios, etc, of your choice.
Good luck
Peace
Edit: sorry, Android flasher won't help install roms, but will help with installing custom recovery - Ext4 or Clockwork Mod - essential in s-off/rooted flashing.

[Q] Updating my new Desire S

Hello,
First of all, thanks for this great forum, i'm new to android and being here is really helpful.
I've read some of the guides posted, still i'd like to have some tips and infos.
I'm from Italy and my Desire S is still working on Gingerbread (!). I would like to update the firmware, if not to Jelly Bean (since the custom one is still beta, but advise me here), at least to ICS, but i don't know the routine to follow (ROOT, then Flash one of the custom ROMS? Being in S-Off mode is needed i guess). Another thing i don't get is flashing radios..
Help would be really appreciated, THANKS.
There is nothing to tell you that you can't find by reading the stickies and understanding what to do.

If you haven't messed with your phone, i.e. rooted it, flashed any fancy thirty party rom, etc, and the phone is running official HTC ROM and in the exact same state as you bought it, I'd suggest OTA and upgrade to official ICS since you are new to android. Go to setting - about phone then update from there.
If you'd like to try other ROMs then there's plenty guide in this forum already.
Imo official 4.0.4 is a bad idea.
1) It has bugs
2) hboot 2.02 cannot be downgraded without htcdev

My Desire S is new and "untouched". For what i had got, the official htc release is to be installed manually and has some issues, so I had thought a custom and more recent ROM would have been better.

Then use revolutionary (S-OFF) not unlock via htcdev.com, 4ext recovery and you are good to go
If you are on Sense 3 you will have to downgrade in order to use Revolutionary.io
And of course I concider the ROM in my signature as the best to date

If you are going custom better not use OTA
Revolutionary will install custom recovery so the next thing will be a backup of your stock ROM and installing the Rom.zip from the sdcard via the recovery. No rooting, because all custom ROMs are pre-rooted.
My ROM is ICS, there is no complete stable JB yet but once you have s-off you can try them all within minutes. And do not forget to sync/backup your data (contacts, etc) to Google or with some app from the Play Store. And read some guides before starting anything. I am just giving you directions not a tutorial

So why do you "root"? Just to unlock the phone without touching the FW?
Going custom i guess it's the only way, because htc is not going to update anymore, so better learn how to.
Anyway THANKS A LOT, it's more clear now

Yes you can root your current software (the stock one) if you need just root for an app or something specific without changing the software.
But going custom means to run Android and Sense version which you will never have officially. And they all come pre-rooted

They have different versions, because they are ported from different devices and there are difference between them. Not only visual but also performance.

The best app for applications and data backup is titanium backup. It also allows you to make a flashable update zip you can flash after installing a new rom

Nandroid backup is a part of the recovery and not an app.
Start reading instead of asking, please. The procedure is covered a million times in a million places.
To the answering guys, (almost) off-topic:
I have a riddle for you, or actually, a somewhat sad observation to share and see your opinions. Since this thread is one of the examples for what I'm going to talk about, and it's useless anyway, I won't feel any remorse diverting it.
I've seen several threads during the last couple of weeks where a random noob got the best out of one of the knowledgeable members of the community - in this and other forums - and they helped him instead of sending him to read stuff that he was supposed to be reading to know the answer.
In absolutely all of those threads, noob questions continued and deteriorated to the most basic ones. There wasn't even one thread where the noob wouldn't continue with flood of basic FAQ-sort of questions.
I've wrote in a couple of them more or less what I wrote here - an unpleasant message to stop the flood of baby questions.
All of the noobs were offended.
All of the noobs actually searched and found their answer after that message, and stopped the flood (with a message that here, they were so great they actually found everything themselves).
It's kinda sad, don't you think? Quite a few times bad treatment seems the most efficient way to achieve the best results... Guess there's no miraculous other way I'm missing, or maybe there is?
(P.S. I'm also moderating a local motorcyclists forum, and keeping the same harsh line in technical sub-forum. Works 100% for >5 years already. But sometimes it gets you wondering about human nature...)

Hi guys ! This is my 4th Galaxy and every time first thing I've done before ROOT -->CWM--->FULL Back up within CWM--> Unlock with CODE--> Install CM --> Enjoy
That was my formula always and with it I'd be able to save Stock/Rooted fresh OS in case something needs to be done and because I did it with CWM it's really easy to restore. But this time I think I'll hold my horses. Too much chatter about things that was not a problem before ...some OTA updates, lock bootloader, etc. Can anyone create post that cannot be replied to with Q/A that matters and update it as more info become available. I mean questions like should I OTA update (if one available), is good root method available or not, is CWM available etc. Just a few things that EVERYONE in here needs to know. Because as of right now everything is a mess. Bootloader hacked ..but it's not REALLY hacked ...no CWM on official page yet ...some sim unlock method available (non code) etc. I got this nice device and REALLY want to do above formula and start enjoying my i337 but because so many questions and no proper answers I can't. So I guess what I am saying Moderator create Office Q and A that CANNOT be replied to and just update with latest info that checked and working properly. Because too much noise right now. Good roms

What is the best full functioning custom Rom for desire s? I currently have cm7.2, but it's got problems with the Wi-Fi, it's good, but it's boring I would like an Android 4 based rom like cm10.1, but yet again that has bugs, I looked into the pac man rom looks great wanted it, but download was corrupted couldn't find another file for the desire s
Please help me find a good rom that's as great as stock but better and stable. Would like a jellybean look.

Hi, old quote from a mod.....
"Best" ROM/kernel threads are not allowed on XDA.
Please test these things for yourself.
This is the only way you will get an unbiased opinion, and then, you can decide for yourself if it meets YOUR needs.
ps: pacman link is there, search..
Sorry for butting in, as @jmcclue said there are links in the PAC thread (mirrors) to the ROM. The link in the first post is corrupted (well, just not working when trying to flash). I think on page 180 or so of the thread there are alternate links that work.
Just as I downloaded that one and it worked fine. Even (fingers crossed) the random reboot problem I was getting initially has stopped!
I've moved from this, to CM10.2, to Carbon, back to this. It's such an amazing sturdy ROM (battery life). Ok, I've yet to tinker with the performance issues (slight lag...but doesn't impede progress or detract from it overall).
I suppose as an aside I tried the CM11 nightlies and was getting the Status 7 when trying to install. But I'm guessing that's just a recovery issue (I hope). Found a 'cheat' video where you can edit a file in the rom to bypass recovery checks...but not advisable.
Going to continue to use PAC and wait patiently for an update.
Thank you, I have been looking around I did eventually find the link earlier today for the pacRom file that works, I did't think that there was another download link until I went to the end of the thread, the very end and people had posted saying it was corrupted and people were referring to use a link previously posted, now I know that people have put links in threads I will look harder and think better. I have the rom now, yet to flash it though, hope it works out fine. I hate being new to things this is the first forum I signed up too, still getting used to the rules I will eventually get the hang of it been told off for posting to many threads searching more now. Well thanks again.

Check the existing thread. Everything you need has already been explained.
@jonas.anderssen
Why exactly do you want to root? Because you have a specific need, a particular application that you can't live without? Or because it's super-cool to have a rooted phone? Rooting can be simple, but it brings difficulties, such as no longer being able to install OTA updates, so you're looking at doing manual updates every month every time Google releases a new version with security updates.

There are countless threads here and also dedicated stickied threads describing step by step how to do this. If you want someone to hold your hand and don't want to do any of the reading or work, then you shouldn't root your phone. Because you'll just be on here in a month crying about how your phone is bricked and wanting someone to hold your hand again.

Hello, i am sorry i thought i replied to you but somehow i missed it. I would like to root my secondary phone because i do have some apps i cant use them without a unrooted phone. I am aware that i wont be able to install weekly updates but thats not necessary because this is a secondary phone.
I have found out a website that shows me how to root it it asked me to download fastboot, recovery clockworl. beta supersu, android studio and hamemrhead mmb2. It seems to be a complex issue but i remember in the past i used ODIn and it rooted the phone within 10 seconds without any issue. Is that still possible?
Thank you again for your time
Ten seconds, no.
But the website says to download "hamemrhead mmb2", which I suppose is Hammerhead MMB29S. If all you want is root, and not a new ROM, you can do it easily by booting into recovery (CWM or TWRP) and installing SuperSU v2.66. It's that easy. 30 seconds, maybe.
And if you're going to work on your phone you need to work on your typing skills first...
You have an excellent resource in this Q&A section, had you read prior to posting your own thread, you probably would be rooted by now.
