[Q] STOP screen turning on when charging? (SOLVED!) - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Update/solution: For those who are looking for a similar situation and may stumble across this thread through searches, I managed to find this program on the Play Store that does exactly what I was after and doesn't even need root: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mp.screenstayofffree

Anyone know how to prevent the screen from turning on when starting to charge?
I have my phone on my bedside-table but my partner goes to sleep before me so I'd rather not wake her up when putting the phone on to charge!
Previously I used to put phone face down on floor, plug in charger, then turn off screen and place on nightstand. Now I'd like to use the Nokia DT-910, but that obviously faces up-and-out by necessity, therefore I'd like the screen to not turn on when placed on the wireless charger
Anyone able to help? Due to the nature of the search terms, this is REALLY difficult to search for!!!

The light from the phone for 30 seconds is gonna wake her up? She must be a really light sleeper then. Being night too it shouldn't be on 100% brightness unless you changed that so I doubt that will wake her up one bit.
Don't think there's a way though to charge without as then you wouldn't know it's charging unless the charger had a indicating light like some wireless chargers do.

Blackout curtains and the sudden-ness of the light change really makes a difference unfortunately
I'd much prefer to be able to do the considerate thing and not having it light up in the first place if there is even a way to do it!

Thanks, was hoping to avoid custom ROMs if possible, but I'll bear that in mind if no other solutions present themselves!

the only other option you have is to look for an app that might do this. by default, the phone can not disable the light from going on when you plug in.

I'm pretty sur Xposed can help you

You could set an automation using Tasker or even Llama should be able to do it.
At the very least you could use them to set the brightness to switch to 1% to make the least of an impact when it does happen.

well, I gave it another shot searching on play store and kept going through the search results until I found something, and I came across this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mp.screenstayofffree
Tested it out a few times and it does exactly why I'm after! Seems I just didn't look hard enough or I just got lucky this time with the search terms...
Fingers crossed this will work out, otherwise you've all given me a few alternative options that I can work with!

http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/54871/ which is a forward port of this http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/47159/
That was also in CyanogenMod but just noticed you said you wanted to do it without custom ROMs.

Solution found, mods please lock this thread as "resolved" if you see this post

Captivate Hardware Reset Button

Hey, Just thought I should post this... To reset the Captivate without removing the battery, there is a connection on the board called "TP". It is right below the MMC card and you can barely see it with the phone's case on it. Here is a picture of the rear case removed. The TP is the white dot. It is covered with white paint to avoid accidental connection.

You can stick a needle through and ground "TP" to the side of the SDCard. Your phone will reset.
It's a signal line. and it's separated from bat+ by 1000ohms.
Thats very useful. Thanks!
Will this reset work on "soft" bricks and/or paperweight states?
Sent from Gingerbread on a Captivate using XDA Premium App
It will work on soft bricks. I'd like to see how a hard brick would react to UART communications. I've got one comming, so I will be able to tell you more soon.
This is a great find for flashing addicts. Thanks so much for sharing this. When I get to my PC I will hit the thanks button.

I've found it quite useful... but I've been doing some non-standard things with my phone...
That looks sick! Someone's been having fun. Has your phone orbited the Earth yet?
Haha not quite... I've been researching non-invasive methods of recovering bricks, and it requires invasive techniques for analysis. Its amazing how many people brick their phones and how expensive jtag methods are.
Doesn't work on Hard Bricks. Tested.
So is it possible to fix a soft brick using this method instead of making a jig?
On my way home right now, guess I will find out soon enough, thank you
Wasn't quite sure what it was gonna do, and hoping it would magically get me into download mode, where the usb or power wouldn't. big down side, it botch'd something in my hardware, and my battery will no longer charge, can not run the phone without being pluged into the wall or pc. unbricked using a standard ol jig, flashed to 2.1 via 1 click, dunno if it just fried battery or did something else. Any ideas what to trouble shoot first? i've tried reflashing, few different roms, tried reseting battery stats, tried factory reset via settings, and via 1 click with no luck, wont be able to test another battery till tomorrow

You did something else....
I used this method about 50 times consecutively. No ideas for you on your issue.
This reboots the phone and that's it. Its easy for bench testing purposes. How long did you hold it?
Just until the screen shut off, then released, not really what sure happened. Is there something rom side that controls the charging of the battery or is it strictly hardware?
Just hoping battery just decided to die, needed excuse to get a bigger one anyways.
Edit-Yeah definetly thinking battery is bad now, it showed 100% charge this morning finally, but as soon as i unplugged from wall it died, plugged it back in and was showing it dead again. Soo hmm, dunno sound like bad battery? fixin to make the 30min trip to ATT store to see if they can check it or swap it.
just wanted to say, i wasn't trying to imply the reset you pointed out had killed the phone, i just wasn't quite sure what happened, and this had been one of the last things i had done.
I just didn't realize a battery could go that quickly, had it tested today, and the guy at store said i was the first person he could tell without a shadow of a doubt there battery was dead.
1500mAH battery, and it read dead at first then full charge on tester at 28mAH.
This looks very interesting and I would like to try it out. Before I try it, I was wondering if you could explain it more in depth like if the battery should be in the phone, if it is necessary for the battery to be fully charged and if this method will work on all Captivates. I also noticed a number on your sd card slot that is different than mine but I assume all phones have a different one. Thanks in advance

[Verizon] Blue SGS3 Power Problems

Blue 32g SGS3 just died this morning. Worked fine since it was first powered up on 6/6. Overnight charges were fine bringing the battery to 100%. Have not rooted it yet. This morning noticed that the screen was dimmed while it was actively being used (then, after a short time, the brightness returned). Set the phone down for a few minutes, returned and now it's completely dead. Won't power up, plugging in the AC power does not show the charging battery display.
Found one post: www modaco com /topic/355514-sprint-sgs3-screen-sometimes-wont-turn-on/ that seems to indicate that this problem is isolated to the blue SGS3's.

I'm confused. What would the case color have to do with the circuitry of the phone. Just because this has only been reported on blue phones does NOT mean the problem is related to the phone being blue.

Blue 32G Power Problems
Sorry 'bout the typo in my first post. Received the phone 7/6.
Took the phone to the VZ store. Tech there was unable to get the device to power on. Tried all of the usual options (ie. replacing the battery). Had the tech call VZ level 2 which was pretty much a waste of time. Level 2 tech said that I couldn't RMA the device because it was still in pre-order status which was after she said that if the phone was RMA'ed I would end up at the end of the pre-order queue. There was no possible way to get a new phone overnighted to me. Was told that the easiest solution would be to go to a VZ store on Wednesday (launch day) and RMA the phone then.
I mentioned that the Blue phones seem to have problems and asked about changing the color to white on Wednesday. Was told that there would be a restocking fee as the blue and white phones have different sku's. Obviously wasn't too happy, but will fight that battle with VZ on Wednesday.
At the end of the visit, the VZ tech reactivated my old Droid I.

Thanks!
Mine has had problems since I turned the thing on. The screen turns purple with lines through it then it dies and I have to pull the battery to get it back on. Just waiting til it releases in stores to do an exchange.

Energizer Inductive Charger In Use

I just got my Energizer inductive charger today, and it works GREAT!
The charger, however, is a dust magnet, and the phone gets pretty hot while charging.
I'm using a diztronic TPU case on my phone, and the inductive charger manages to work with the case on.
One thing that doesn't seem to work is charging the phone while the phone is powered off.
Also ordered an Oregon Scientific Clock + charger, will report the results when I receive it tomorrow.

haven't calculated it yet but i heard it takes twice as long to charge compared to normal usb charging.
Would you mind taking the case off to see if the phone stays or slides off. I see that slant, and it takes less than that for the phone to move
I've been using the Energizer Qi charger for over a week now and it works great. I have a bumper case on it so sliding is not an issue. I put it on the charger when I go to bed and in the morning the blue light is off meaning it is charged. Make sure you turn off 'DayDream' mode in display settings since this keeps the screen on during charging and causes really slow charging and heats up the phone. So far I haven't been having any heat related issues using the Energizer charger. I also ordered the Panasonic TM101 which hopefully will be here from Japan in the coming weeks.

I had this charger for a few days when I first got my N4. For those worried about the phone sliding, here's what I did... Went to the auto parts store and picked up one of those sticky dashboard pads and cut it to fit. Worked perfectly. I've since purchased the LG WCP-700 charger and use the same sticky pad on it.

I've had two of these chargers for a few weeks. Just today, I noticed a very faint clicking noise coming from the charger when nothing is charging. I've never noticed this before. I'm not home at the moment to check my other charger to see if it also makes the clicking noise, but I'm pretty sure this just started. It still appears to be working fine, but the clicking can get a little annoying. Can anyone else hear it if? Try putting your ear up to it. It has a certain repetitive pattern to it too.

Nope, doesn't have dual alarms, only has one alarm. I'm not really liking the clock, it seems pretty small and the instructions are kind of vague.

I just received mine in the mail yesterday. Cool a$$ little device. It charges, functions as a trusted BT device, finds my phone, my phone finds it. Moto Connect reads the remaining battery.
I was concerned that it would be too big for my keys, which is not the case. I'm very happy with it. AMA about it.

I've had one of these a few weeks now (2 actually, but haven't opened the second one up).
The battery drain is less than 1% per day. Since receiving mine and fully charging it, I hadn't charged it at all for at least two weeks and the juice was just down to 90% with the BT turned on.
Unlike the first poster, I find the thing just a hair too large to put on my key chain, but I also have my car's electronic key and another BT tether device on my keychain (no actual keys, though!). I just put my PP in my back pocket (work slacks, not jeans).

First, it will not charge the device fully. The Power Pack's capacity is 1500mAh, while the Moto X 2014's capacity is 2300mAh. So you're looking at getting about 65% of your battery back at optimal performance, minus some due to technical inefficiencies, and some more due to other limitations.
Second, it charges at 1A. The Moto's charger is 1150mA (1.15A), so it charges the phone slightly slower than the stock charger.
Hope this helps! I personally don't see the value in $40 for such a device, but if I lost my keys and/or phone more often it'd totally be worth it.
Yeah I regret buying it. Every time I use it it only change like maybe 30%+ from a full micro

make the display stay OFF when plugged in?

Hi guys
I have an old android phone with a broken display and it would cost too much to replace it. I can still use the phone when plugged into a screen or TV.
My question is how do I make the display stay off? There is no reason to have on when it's plugged into the TV, just using power and adding heat.
I tried searching online, but I keep finding posts how to make it stay on
Try using Tasker which you can use to make a profile. The profile will turn off your screen once it gets turn on after you plug in your charger.

So just to make sure, the screen will be turned off, but it still works via the HDMI out on the TV right?
If it's an LCD display I wouldn't worry too much about SOT. The back lighting LEDs probably have a 20K hours lifespan at full brightness.
Turn down the display brightness if you're really concerned.
Direct sunlight is a LCD's worst enemy. They can also be poisoned by solvents. Keep all solvents including isopropyl alcohol away from them.

I don't really have experience with things you're trying to do but the best thing you can do is to actually try it in practice. I cannot guarantee that your monitor will stay on if the phone is off. Download Tasker and you will see.

LCD's can have memory "burn in" which is reversible. The broken glass though will eventually destroy the display.
