I know Moto G is considered a smart phone but can I possibly buy them without ATT bothering me about signing up for one? Being off contract and all, I am hoping ATT won't pester me.
No need to sign up for a data plan. If you get it from AT&T, it might be locked to them. If you want, you can buy it directly from Amazon or Motorola.

I have a question for anyone that can be of assistance. I am looking to upgrade myself and my wife from our old antiquated HTC Wizard finally. The problem is I dont want to lose our grandfathered 5.99 data plan through the upgrade. I'm looking for 3g phones that people have upgraded to without problems. This also has to be done with a plan ( I know it would be easier to by a phone outright but unfortunately I don't have the money for that now.) So please any suggestions? Thanks for all of your help.
I sold an iphone recently to someone with a grandfathered plan and tmobile actually said they can remain on the grandfathered data plan. Have you tried calling your tmo customer support agent?
dont call tmobile support. just get a phone from another carrier. i have the cheap data plan on my lg expo.
Thanks guys. I know I can purchase a phone outright and do it. But unfortunately I don't have the money for that right now. So I have to go the extended contract route and upgrade phone. I have gotten mixed messages on this working for the G1. Some say tmobile finds out somehow and cuts this off after a while forcing you to upgrade data plan. Anyone else?
If at first you don't succeed, try try again..... Anyone else please?
I was wondering if there is anyway to get a smartphone w/o paying for a dataplan.
For example hiding or changing the IMEI/TAC number.
I did read of grandfathering smartphone no data but not sure if I have it.
Obv I won't buy from ATT else I get the data plan. Any ideas?
Buy it unlocked from another company youll have a smartphone but only for calls and of course wifi will be your only data solution

Newegg has a great section of no contract phones

Never knew about the newEgg unlocked store. Thanks for the info!
AT&T found me out. I had given them the IMEI of a non-smartphone to take advantage of their data plans and now they're forcing me to go back to a non-smartphone completely. What I want to know is-- if I buy an unlocked phone that is not in their smartphone lineup, can they force me to buy a data package? I was thinking about buying something like a BlackBerry or Sidekick as long as it's from another carrier, unlocked.
Does AT&T have any rules about this? How can I come up with a decent phone after this?
Thanks
Im currently on verizon and am paying a little more than when I started. My contract is over but I cant take advantage of the upgrade because I would loose my unlimited data plan. My sister and I have a family plan, She pays for 2.5 of the phones and I pay the other 2.5(we both pay half of moms). So I am looking at switching to T-mobile but I have no idea what the coverage is like here in town. So first of I would like to know if anyone is from Waco, Tx. and what kind of coverage they get.
My other option is unlocking my razr and using tmobile for a month. I wouldn't want to loose my verizon plan just in case the coverage here is crappy so I would have to pay for both verizon plan and tmobile. But I want to know if theres a way I can do this without verizon knowing that I unlocked my phone and used it on tmobile. Can I just deactivate the device and activate another one I have?
My third option is using my nexus 7, but I dont think I can make phone calls through it. I was reading through the forum and dont think they ever got that issue fixed.
Any other options? Any ideas?
Hi, planning on getting the Moto G for my dad. He currently is in a grandfathered family plan and it doesn't have data on it.
If I get him the Moto G from amazon and not tmobile, is Tmobile going to automatically add data plan to his plan when they recognize the IMEI? I don't want that, and would prefer for him to keep his current plan with no data and just be able to swap sims with no other BS.
Thanks.
Don't worry. From what I'm aware of, T-mobile doesn't serve that kind of BS like ATT does. If the sim fits, just put it into the phone, or have T-mobile swap it to the correct sim size.
