[Q] Need Help! Brand New Out OF Box Root Went Bad. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'd just rooted Nexus 4 and that went very easy.
Now of out of box root on Nexus 5 went bad.
Installed ADB drivers, adb devices confirmed device, adb reboot bootloader, fastboot oem unlock (which erased everything), fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.2.3-mako.img (same 1 I used for Nexus 4 4.4 KitKat) and installed, went to recovery and enter. Then it locked up to a dim lit background. Now it won't turn on. Just turns on to very dim lit background that's blank.
The phone is not recognized by the PC no more. No ADB.
Need Help! Any Ideas?

i'll do some looking around. is there a reason you flashed a recovery meant for a different device instead of the ones you can get for the nexus 5?

I was in a hurry and should have read a little more. I thought if it worked for Nexus 4 with KitKat 4.4, it would work for Nexus 5 4.4 (bad idea). Now, I'm worried because the phone won't boot to nothing or turn on. It's just a dim lit background that's black.

so then i'm assuming you cant boot to the bootloader.

Since I got it today, do you think I could return it and just say it defective? This is going to take an expert to figure this out.

If I read OP correctly it says he flashed recovery for Mako on the N5. Wouldn't that bork a whole bunch of stuff?

Hey, I got it in bootloader and tried to start it up but went back to dim lit black background. What should I try next?

@fish411 your only supposed to flash a recovery that's compatible with the nexus 5. You said you flashed to same recovery for your nexus 4 that's the problem it's not compatible.
While your phone is off try accessing recovery mode by holding volume down and power then use volume buttons select recovery. If that brings you to recovery mode try factory resetting

try fastboot flashing the right recovery. if that doesnt work, you have to fastboot flash the factory image.

How would he access recovery if he flashed an incompatible one? This looks like flash stock image territory.

Bootloader is recognized by the PC now. I got the Nexus Root ToolKit. What's the best option to use from that?
At least I'd thought, the driver shows up in device manager, but when typing in adb devices in command prompt, it just said " List of devices attached" with on device listed.

In the bootloader you are in fastboot mode, you would have to use
Code:
fastboot devices
not adb

yup. you'll fastboot flash recovery, not adb flash recovery.

Tell me I've not bricked my Xoom!!!

I've just tried to root my wifi only Xoom using the 1 click method, but didn't see there was a tab for wifi only & a 3G tab. I went through the options using the 3G options.
Now my Xoom's stuck at the red Motorola screen & won't go any further.
Are there any threads to reverse my balls up?? I've had a look but can't see anything
Please tell me I've not bricked it?!?

I could tell you that it's not bricked...but then I might be lying.
Moved to Q&A. This is not development.
You will need to adb and flash recovery then flash the rom again.

Please let us poor souls know how you did it!!! I am stuck with the same problem - the screen freezes with the Motorola logo and the tablet wouldn't boot up!
For those still having issues, try going into fastboot and flashing the stock images.
You can access fastboot by restarting your xoom (power and vol up) and then once the red M comes up, tap the volume down key around a second later. You have a decent window of opportunity to press the key. This should take you to the bootloader. Once in there, use the volume down key to enter fastboot.
From fastboot you can either flash a custom recovery then from the recover install the BRD 3.1 rooted update, or you can just use the fastboot flash command to flash each partition back to stock.
Good luck.

[Q] How to root nexus s 4g?

i downloaded the matrix rom and i liked it but i wanted to go back to ice cream sandwhich for the day so when i tried to go to recovery it froze on the google screen while trying to get to recovery i kept trying and trying but my recovery wasnt working i couldnt get to it. so i went to titanium back up and clicked un-install all system and data because i thought it was when i restored all system and data from ICS but after i did the uninstall i kept getting a force close alot of things and i got all the way down to one and it was process.android i think and everytime i clicked force close it popped right bacj up instently. so i took out the battery and put it back in and now i cant power on my phone it gets stuck on the matrix screen. can you please help me i can only acces the volume up power button menu.
Boot into recovery, wipe data, cache, Dalvik cache, format /system and flash the ICS ROM of your choice.
If the ICS.zip file is not yet on your SDCard, you can mount it by going to 'mounts and storage' in CWM and selecting 'mount storage'. Then it'll be recognized by your computer and you can copy it over.
Good luck.

Nexus 5 stuck! Please read! Help!! ):

Today I decided to try and put my Nexus 5 4.4.4 rooted phone back to stock. I unlocked the bootloader and then it would boot up to the 4 coloured orbs. I discovered that this is because of ClockworkMod Recovery (which is the reason I wanted to get a fresh install of 4.4.4). I went into clockworkmod and do the "wipe data / factory reset" but that didn't help. I think my USB debugging has since been turned off due to this.
I can boot my phone into the area with the menu for "Recovery" and "restart bootloader" and stuff like that. The bootloader is unlocked but when I run "flash-all.bat" it says "waiting for device".
Please help me! ):

I'm not sure. I just tried it and it looked like it was working but it was stuck on "writing..." for ages after pressing any key to end because the .bat had finished.
I do now have stock recovery but it is just showing the open Android with the exclamation point .

[Q] Nexus 5 boots in "erasing"

Completely stock Nexus 5 wont boot. When it powers on it goes into the animation of the Droid with "erasing" under it. This began randomly last night after I unplugged it from a car charger. Up until this point the phone was perfect.
I can boot into the option menu where I can select Restart Bootloader or Recovery mode, but no matter what I choose the phone restarts and goes directly to Erasing.
Any tips on how to recover without losing everything?
Thanks in advance ~ Shaneous

Don't think he mentioned if his bootloader was locked or unlocked..
If it's locked, there is nothing you can do except sent it in for a repair (you'll likely lose everything anyways since they'll probably just do a motherboard swap), or unlock it (and lose data).
It it's unlocked, then there a multiple things you can do; flash factory images, use a custom recovery, etc.

[Solved] Need help with installing custom recovery (twrp)

Hey all, so I bought a nexus 5 about a week ago(loving it!) and it came with boot loader unlocked. Basically I'm tryna install twrp through fastboot so I can flash SuperSU and root. Andriod version is 5.1 lollipop and I'm trying to install 2.8.5.2 twrp. I can get cmd to recognize the andriod SDK platform and is recognizes the fastboot recovery command but it says waiting for device. Do I press start on my phone or should it do this itself?

Fastboot is waiting on device if there isn't wright driver installed.
Enable use debugging
Install drivers and adb using adbinstaller.exe. Google it.
Then try "adb devices" in cmd
Yes my device was booted to fastboot. I already installed the android SDK, and the PC already installed driver. I'm gonna enable USB debugging as I forgot though. Will look into all of this and let you guys know. Just curious as to what is the start option in the fastboot menu on my phone?

That's true. Adb and fastboot are two different things. In fastboot you don't need USB debugging enabled. You need to install drivers, when you are allready in fastboot mode (booted in bootloader).

If the phone is running normally, try the "adb devices" command and see if your device is recognized. Or if booted in to the bootloader, do "fastboot devices". Either way you should see your device as an alphanumeric string. If either recognizes your device, you have the correct drivers installed.
You will fastboot flash a custom recovery in bootloader mode.

Alright guys thanks! Got the custom recovery installed and phone is rooted! Solution was installing the Naked (United?) Drivers for nexus 4(yes they work for nexus 5 too!) Fastboot recognized the device and installed recovery susscessfully! Now it seems I have another question,I installed elementalx kernel and reverted back to stock as stock is way easier on my battery. Just wondering when changing the settings in the elementalx installer and then reverted to stock did the config stick or revert? I noticed my phones running hotter than usual which leads me to be leave the thermel throttling didn't revert. Thanks!
EDIT: It seems battery is draining faster too!

There's no way elementalx is worse on battery than stock. It's far better.

I reinstalled to test thoughly. I see where I can disable mpdecision and use custom hotplugging in the elementalx config, is that it or is there other steps I need to take besides that? Any advice or threads on this?
EDIT: I'm guessing the overheating is causing the battery drain. Stock didn't heat my device like this. Its not bad overheating but it does get significant and the battery seems to plummet when it happens. Usually happens after playing games, although stock didn't heat up this bad or drain battery that bad while playing games. It may also be the new charger I got, will charge with stock charger to see what happens.

True but I don't want mods thinking I'm trying to spam or troll.
Thanks guys, I've done all I needed to do. As suggested by Ben using custom hotplugging and adjusting thermal throttling, device settled back down and is running smooth and heatfree(besides heavy gaming which is usual.) Thanks everyone! Guess it'll hold me over till official Cyanogenmod 12.1 nightlies start rolling out.
