Root for mk2 update - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Root is achievable on the new mk2 ota update using the notoriously called "questionable" VROOT. **edit** its questionable because the website is in chinese, not a reputable developer so use at your own risk. That being said I did a full factory restore before doing this No personal info stored and immediately deleted their bootleg Super su app. Reguardless the instructions are pretty straightforward and easy for even a newbie to do with the explanation given. Just google "vroot xda" and you will find threads they don't mention att galaxy s4 but believe me it works I have stock 4.3 with root right now with titanium backup installed and crapware frozen.
I know some people already know this im making a thread on this for ppl that dont know yet and have beem searching like I have before I found it. Any questions feel free to ask as we are here to help each other against applesung I mean samsung

Doesn't work for me. I downloaded the USB drivers and installed them manually. Proceeded to download vRoot on my Win7 laptop and ran as administrator. Connected the phone, hit the green button and a small message popped up above the green button. I used the Google Translate app to find out what it said and it read "Device Not Recognized".
Yes, USB debugging is enabled (verified in Dev Options).
Yes, I reboot my phone multiple times.

I used Kingo root on mine and it worked as well.

The concern over this root method is not because the website is in Chinese...
Please research this method before doing anything that potentially puts your private data and IMEI number at risk.

From what I've seen, there hasn't been much way in reversing vroot/kingo to a viable known safe method; am I wrong? Is there development being done on a new root still?

Who knows with all these new phones coming out all the time... we can just use the known methods that work even if they werent meant for the devices we have
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app

I believe the problem with vroot was it opens your phone up to a Chinese server and most antivirus applications deemed it as malware.

Its not samsung...its any ATT phone now...ATT stated a while go they will no longer be supporting phones with unlocked bootloaders...in other words every phone from ATT will likely have a locked bootloader :/
And to the op...from my understanding the fact that its in chinese wasnt what was in question...it was the fact that it connects to a chinese server, and since its rooting they can obtain any data off your phone with out you knowing...could be stored credit cards, photos, contacts, imei...or nothing at all, but there is the possibility

Of course there is no danger in someone taking your IMEI, cloning your phone and using your service on your dime... or grabbing your bank account info because you use a banking app, or buying stuff on Amazon or eBay with your account, etc.
I cannot emphasize enough that anyone thinking about this method of rooting their phone do some research first.

Don't say z4root won't work, it never works unless you're on eclair. I'm saying you can't make a post simply stating something doesn't install on this forum, you gotta at least say "when I try to install it says 'application not installed'" or the like.
Like I said before, you shouldn't expect it to work anyways, so why make a post saying it won't work? Don't tell me how was I supposed to know that, because googling z4root will yield you some results from 2 or 3 years ago.
I also suggested you try unlock root and superoneclick, because the poster before you said to try superoneclick as well and my translation of your post was that you chose to ignore that suggestion.

Toss it my way. Correct none of the unlock apps will work for the I727, I've tried many. Your IMEI is still in the database, It is just AT&T not wanting to give it to you. Your best bet would be to use one of the MANY online sources. There are several that offer unlocking for under $10.00 others that offer for around $30.oo ish. Find one in your budget that will work for your time constraints and go with them.
As far as busy box, you have a few options from the market that will quickly and easily install it for you.

[Q] Unroot question

Is it possible to unroot your phone without going back to the stock rom? My employer started offering wi-fi but only for unrooted devices. Thank you.
There have been miscellaneous discussions regarding hiding root, I would suggest looking into those first.
As well, if there is no software/app needed to be installed on the device there's no way that a wifi connection could detect root. So, how do they plan to find out if you're rooted or not?

I work for a financial company so everything is extra secure.
I still don't understand why root access to your own device poses a threat so much that your employer doesn't want you connecting to wifi. Either way l, hope someone can help u hide ur super user status or connect to the network anyway

Because companies like that are paranoid and think you may accidently or on purpose give them a virus, or have them. Android is not affected by a Win32 virus, and it may not even be affected by a regular Linux virus (very unlikely but I don't know tons about the ins and outs on that level).

Not sure if hiding su would work. A simple app should be able to determine that you have su binary even without gaining access (IMHO).
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
Yes it's possible, I have CM9 without root. SuperSu has an option to remove root I think it's just the app and the SU binary not sure. I would assume that they don't want a user rooted because it's very easy to packet sniff if you're rooted and connected to someone's WiFi

Thanks everyone. I found a few things that I am going to try and will let you know if any work!

So I have an update on this. The app that my employer is using for this is AirWatch. I tried using the Temporary Unroot option in Superuser prior to installing it but my phone still came back as non-compliant. I know that the unroot worked though because ROM Manager told me that the phone needed to be unrooted in order for it to work. I am thinking there may be another app on my phone that it is detecting and thus causing it to say it is out of compliance. I am going to keep researching but if anyone has any ideas, please let me know!
Chuck
maybe it's detecting any of the apps on your phone that were granted su access....did you deny them SU access before hiding root?
I tried that and also uninstalled a couple of items but still no go. The only apps on the list are superuser itself and titanium backup as I deleted the others.

Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) . Android version 4.0.4. It was the last official firmware that we got for our phone. If you don't know for sure, go to settings>about phone and it'll be your model number. When you bought the phone, it was most likely running Gingerbread (GB ) , 2.3.6 (or something close to that). If you're on GB, first download kies on your computer and upgrade that bad boy to ICS. If you're on ICS, wonderful! I'll link you the information you need.
Read, very, carefully!
Our phone is pretty sturdy and not easy to brick, but that doesn't mean you can't do it! If you do something outside of the instructions, you'll brick it.

Alright, this link I'm posting IS NOT the guide I want you to follow, I want you to follow the guide that chweez posted on post #186. It's the one I followed and know. I'm linking you here because chweez posted all the links you need to accomplish this in the last post of the same thread. Download all those links, then press that link in post #186, read, read, read. If you have any questions, post them in the root thread chweez posted in post #186. I repeat, do not follow the rooted kernel guide by k0nane, you want the root guide of ICS posted by member Beastmode.

Happy flashing! Any questions, ask before you do anything. It's easier to explain something before you've done something we can't undo or a process to undo. We're here to help!

Make sure and have Kies uninstalled on the computer, kies and Odin don't play well together. After uninstalling kies, plug you're phone into the computer so the drivers load, then you're good to go!
OK thanks again

Going to hijack this thread for a second. Followed the guide and when I get to the part on hitting start on odin nothing happens, what could I be doing wrong? I've never done this before so this is completely new to me. Thanks.

If your phone isn't found or recognized, you may need to install the USB drivers for the Blaze . if the drivers are installed, you may want to try another USB port

Post here if/when a root method for nb1 (KitKat) is discovered...

Useful for people who actually do some searching/reading... And to keep it all in one place.

Cf auto root
Vroot
I think both of those have been confirmed not to work. Isn't vroot questionable?

dumb question- has anyone tried Kingo?
it was questionable, but now isn't, blah blah blah... I've got quite a few devices rooted with Kingo, still haven't had my identity stolen.
regarding CF autoroot, I was under the impression that it didn't work with our locked bootloader, even going back to the "good ol days" of MDL.
I have tried kingo, vroot, oneclickroot, saferoot, and srsroot. None of these work

No he just threw those out. They haven't been tested yet.
Cf auto Root works by flashing a temp recovery not possible on this locked down pos. I tried Kingo it trys every exploit in the book then also trys to flash recovery.

I give serious thank you to whoever gets a root method going. I took the OTA.... and like a idiot didn't defrost some things I had frozen. So the OTA removes my root but kept my apps frozen. There are a few apps that I have frozen that I would like to have back.... so im waiting patiently lol. Cant wait!!! thanks for all the hard work people put into these things! really!

So that's the coveted, ever elusive, mysterious search bar. It's amazing. I've never seen anything like it. It looks so simple.

You can also just go to app manager swipe to the far right to disabled apps and re enable the apps you want. I have re enabled apps disabled by titanium this way.
There is one app disabler that disables apps in a way that doesn't remove them and they cannot be restored this way. I forget the name of it. So beware there are some apps outside titanium this may not work for. If I find the one I used I will post the name.

Its not really Samsung's fault, its AT&T's for locking the bootloader. Samsung makes a great product IMHO.
Future versions of android may not be rootable. http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...ak-compatibility-with-many-current-root-apps/
