Can the Sprint Nexus 5 Have a Bad ESN? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I understand that you pop in a 4G LTE sim card. But does this cover the whole activation?
In theory, can the Sprint Nexus 5 have a bad ESN? All I really want to know is if it's possible that I can get scammed on CL/eBay.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app

Still need ESN for CDMA portion so yes it can still be bad. However odds are it wont be just yet because of the fact the devices are so new. However still ask them for ESN then check with provider if it's reported stolen.

I'm on AT&T go phone, can I purchase the one x full retail witouth problems?

I know what you think, go phone sucks, not enough data blah blah blah. But AT&T recently upgraded their gophone data plan to 1GB from 500 mb. Honestly 1GB for me is more than enough cause I use wifi at home, wifi at work, I live in the Washington dc area and there's wifi everywhere so I barely even use my data. Do you think I'll be able to buy the one XL ( off contract of course) or will AT&T give me a hard time cause I'm a gophone customer? I'm just worry about the fact that it's LTE.
You might get some pushback from the rep or manager, but there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to get it. You will just have to change your APN, as the only one that works with prepaid is "wap.cingular"

Thanks for the reply, I guess I'll buy it from amazon mobile that way I won't have to deal with the store reps and managers.
I don't know.... they might auto switch you. I would try to ask customer service

Typically, Amazon mobile or other 3rd party retailers, will charge more for non-contract phone than AT&T because they can't get any payback from AT&T.
Your biggest problem will be microSIM activation. You may have to buy a microSIM cutter to trim your current go phone SIM yourself. AT&T won't be thrilled to activate One X for a Go phone plan.
There is also a chance that AT&T will stop your data service once it detects that you are using a 4G smartphone (it has the IMEI number on database) on a Go Phone plan. Yes, it happened to others before.

Thanks for the advice. I already have a micro sim cutter so I'm good on that end. I'm using a galaxy nexus on my go phone for about 3 weeks and no problem at all. It isn't 4G though so I don't know.

The difference here is that AT&T has no idea what Galaxy Nexus is because it doesn't have the IMEI number on file because it is not an AT&T branded phone. It does have all IMEI# of AT&T branded phones on file.

True. I'll call an AT&T store and ask them just to make sure.
It's a lot easier to do something like that with T-mobile's monthly 4g pre-paid plans. All you need to do is order a sim online from them. They don't care what you use with their plan.
If I recall correctly u need a special lte sim to use lte.

I don't really need lte, if I pop up my sum can I use hspa+?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Your phone won't get hspa+ or lte on prepaid service. In fact, you won't get any data until you change your apn to wap.cingular, which is a 3G apn. If you need a microsim, just go to the at&t store and tell them you don't have your phone but you want to activate a prepaid plan. Be sure to specify that you need a microsim and they will just put a dummy IMEI consisting of all 1111111.

Despite the US Carrier's "4G" (fauxG) marketing blitz, HSPA is actually 3G. The LTE build out is a proper 4th generation network.
If you do not care about LTE why not import an international version and not have to worry? Also you might be able to buy one from Rogers in Canada it is the same device but AT&T shouldn't have the IMEI number

I've actually thought about buying one from rogers. Like the fact it doesn't have a
carrier logo, but I don't know of any shops that sells them to ship in the states.

AT&T version has 1-year warranty while imported version likely has zero warranty. If you bricked your phone one way or another, a warranty is probably quite important to most of us.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but unlocking bootloader on newer HTC phones is done via HTC Dev, and that voids your warranty automatically ( as in they have your IMEI and know you rooted with them)?
If so, then don't worry about having warranty for bricking the device, you lost it when bootlader was unlocked.

When your phone is bricked, e.g. can't boot up, there is no way AT&T can tell which version or unlocked boot loader you are using. At least not for the clerks at warranty center. If your bootloader is still functioning. Chances are you can still manage to load another ROM on to it.
Besides, there could be other hardware defacts that you may need to exchange. A warranty is always welcome.

Possible? Metro phone flashed to a S2 (att)

I got a old S2 I want to give to my buddy but shes on a metro. No sim cards.
Now im not asking for any bad advise that might get people in trouble but the guy at store said don't flash phones anymore but he wouldn't explain what that means (prob didn't know)
What did he mean? If there no sim card how did they put a metro phone onto a S2.
Can I do it? I know I got the tools? I can follow driections good... any advise? or just tell her can't do it..
I like her so try and help if you can
What country do you live in? There is a thread in the general forum with information regarding that it is illegal to unlock phones after 1/26. I don't think anyone really knows what the implications are at this time. See that thread for more info.

don't worry about this lol ^^^^
as for your friend, metro PCs?? is I believe a CDMA network, which doesn't use sim cards. Since your phone is GSM phone its hardware is incompatible, no way to make it work.
if you're looking for a CDMA compatible phone loom for unlocked ones in your area with craigslist.com or eBay, make sure they're unlocked and that u get the imei to check If the phone was stolen
I can do that. Well only reason I thought possible is metro git said they used to flash them. Was he full of it
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
maybe it was a CDMA / international version. the skyrocket is a gsm variant of the s2.
so basically unless he was talking about a different model, yes, he was full of it lol. no sim means no service on this phone

(Q)Bell or Virgin N5 locked?

I found a good deal for a new n5 on craigslist but the guy thats selling it says they told him its locked to his carrier. I went online and almost everyone says you cant lock a nexus phone to a carrier.
As far as i recall sprint had the nexus locked. He got his directly from bell canada. Does anyone know anything about this?
Thanks!
Sent from SGH-T889v Canadian Wind Mobile
All Nexus 5 phones are factory unlocked some one at Bell probably gave him wrong info as they normally only sell fully locked phones from the other manufactures.
I'm not entirely sure that all Nexus 5's come unlocked - - A lot of folks said that about all previous Nexus devices, i.e., they all come unlocked, but there were one's that came locked (although none of them were from Canada). That said, every Nexus device prior to the Nexus 5 sold by Canadian carriers has come unlocked, if that is any indication.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk 2
sometimes the carrier locks their own phones. I'm not sure if this was the case though
The carrier probably lied. My dad had a nexus 4 and the fido CSR told him it was locked too.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Well I decided to pass. Not because it might be locked which i really doubt it would be. But because
I would only save about $50 but if something was to go wrong when i get it home or a week down the line
I would be SOL as google wouldnt cover the warranty. It seems that they match the IMEI with the account it
was purchased under to do any returns or fixes. Save 50 bucks or risk 350 ..go figure

[Q] Tmobile N5 on sprint

My brother recently got a tmobile nexus 5 on craigslist, and it turns out it can't be activated on tmobile. My question is could he use the nexus 5 on sprint or does he have to get it carrier unlocked. I've read around and some say that the phone is carrier locked and some say it isn't. Just wanted to get an answer from the reliable xda community.

its not carrier locked, but you might have to get level 2 support for them to add the IMEI to their system.
he cant activate it on tmobile then it must be blacklisted. if its blacklisted, it goes on a national registry. i know att and vetizon are part of the registry, if sprints on it as well then you wont be able to use it on sprint.

This. Not to mention the fact that there is no such thing as a carrier locked Nexus 5. If you want to take a Nexus from one carrier to another, you simply add the IMEI to their system when you activate the new service. If you can't activate it, then the phone must be blacklisted which makes you SOL. All the more reason not to buy a phone off of Craigslist.
you can check if its been blacklisted, for free, here http://swappa.com/esn
Almost positive that the tmobile nexus 5 doesn't have CDMA in the phone. Try an att Sim in the phone. If att and t mobile don't work in there, then nothing will.

there is only 1 version of the nexus 5 and it does have both GSM and CDMA radios.. i did a quick search and it looks like sprint MAY activate your phone if you give them the imei minus the last digit (MEID).

Yes it can be done but there is a different situation here whereby the phone cannot be activated on tmob, presumably because it's blacklisted.

Galaxy Note Edge brand new, but...

Hey all, I got one of these brand new in the box from one of those machines that you have to try and get the stick through the hole and it knocks down the prize. The thing is, this one was branded by Sprint (did NOT say Sprint anywhere on the box, only within the phone itself on startup.)
I tried to bring it to MetroPCS, and they said they can't flash it because it was too new or something.
Is there actually a way to flash/unlock it from Sprint to use on Metro?
No, there is not. You have Metro PC which is GSM and you have Sprint which is CDMA. You can contact Sprint to unlock for international use. But it cannot be unlocked for domestic, be it CDMA or GSM.
Call Sprint international customer support.
BTW: This is Dev Section of the forum.. You may want to post in the Q and A section of the forum for questions like these. Its easier to get a helping hand.
Actually i thought the note edge was capable of both. It suppose to run on cdma or gsm like the nexus

Actually, there is a possibility that if there is no lein on the phone itself, you may be able to contact Sprint and get them to unlock it.
