The stock Hangouts is so bright, would like something darker. I tried Sliding Messaging Pro but it just doesn't feel right. I read that there's a black out version of Hangouts but from what I've seen, it's too dark.

Haven't seen grey hangouts, i've seen both the default and blacked out version you speak of. Surely there are themes or ROMs available that mask something like that, making it easier to view. But for stock, I think we're SOL.
FoxHound rom has a Gray-ish Hangouts. I would really like having that zip, it goes great with Aviate launcher. But I can't seem to find the zip file, have you had any luck finding one yet?

There are plenty of themes for the messaging widget, making it more transparent or changing the colors of the buttons to access it, but the inside of the app itself is still white and uninteresting.
So, can someone please theme one? Or, if it's been done, send me to where I can find a themed stock messaging app? Maybe a black background and green text? or hell a black background and many options as to the color of the text. Just something that isn't that drab white. It doesn't go with any rom I've flashed.
If anyone can do it, thank you!!!

1. The widget is full screen, transparent and simple. Hancent you consistently have to click on the little picture, then menu, then "all threads"...it's annoying. Also, in most themed sense roms, the widget is themed but not the app itself. So in myn's rom, everything is dark and transparent...but when you open the app, it's boring and white. It's like you're only trying to make the home screens look better and nothing else. Also, you can't theme the widgets from chomp or handcent, so unless your theme happens to look like their widgets, it looks out of place and you're boned anyway.
2. Handcent and Chomp have ads. Ads are annoying and make the product look cheap. I even paid for chompsms ads to go away and they came back. I left a strongly worded e-mail...and review...and i tell people not to get it.
3. the stock app is faster and takes up less space than the 3rd party ones and can't be uninstalled. You HAVE to have it, so why can't someone spend some time and make an app you HAVE to have look a little better?
4. Gmail, menus, the drawer launcher, the drawer itself and various other stock programs are themed all the way through, why not the messaging app too?
I would ask for the stock sense mail app too but I don't use it enough to really care. The messaging app I use 200 times a day minimum.

I love the look of the stock messaaging app in CM6 and would like to have the same thing on a sense rom. Im sure its possible some how.

I've always wanted this also. I didn't think it was possible since no one has a themed mms.apk in their rom, so I never posted about it. I did use the cm6 version of AOSP but for some reason mms never worked. Hopefully some of the great developers on xda can get this done for us.

1) With LauncherPro plus you can have a messaging widget that displays messages from what ever messaging program you use. Its great, I love it!
2) I've never tried ChompSMS because I love Handcent and I've never once seen an advertisement except for an ad for one of their own services within the settings menu. Such a tiny infraction is something I cannot fault them for given how long I've been using their otherwise ad free app.
3) You're right on this one but its really not a concern. On my old MyTouch 3G, I worried about it, absolutely. However, given that Froyo offers the ability to install apps to the SDcard there is absolutely no reason to worry about space. Its just silly. Its akin to being worried about fitting a six pack of beer in a Suburban.
4) No clue, so I'm not going to address it.
As titled states, I find most gosms themes simply ugly. If not for the feature set I really would just use the stock cm10 one from super lite jb but sadly I can't.
I love the way the messaging app in that ROM look with the simple blue and black, but can't find anything similar. Any takers?

I used to use this for ICS like messaging: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jb.gosms.theme.googleui_free&hl=en it's about as close as you can get I think.
Used to love Go SMS. Then a few months ago they removed the ability to backup messages to your sd and forced you to use their super ****ty cloud service. After that they've continully pumped out updates with each one making the app worse than it was before. You should just get on CM10, AOKP, or similar ROM and you'll have hundreds of awesome themes available, and you won't have any of the worthless bloat or feel like your messaging app was designed for a 12yr old girl living in Southeast Asia.
Crimson cobalt theme for gosms is like the crimson cobalt theme for cm10/9. I use both, most of the time.
Is it possible to bring the stock TW contacts app into any AOSP ROM? I like the benefit of having the latest Android software of an AOSP ROM, but I really dislike the contact app. It is really hard to see with the white background. I have looked all over xsa for a solution. You would think it would be easy as the GMAil 4.2 substitute. I am not sure what files to use.

Have you tried Slim Bean rom? It has all apps inverted and,I believe, the contacts as well. It used to be called the Real Dark Slim addon on but "after 4.2.2 build 2. It's now integrated into the ROM with a toggle." I too hated the white background on contacts. Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I did try Slim in the past. "pre 4.2". I am not sure if the ROM had issues with the graphics or what. It seemed not very sharp after installation. Everything looked fuzzy. I even tried Eclipse ROM. I will figure out something. I just like the look of the stock TW contacts. The app also additional features. At the moment LiquidSmooth has the best 4.2.2 ROM out there.
In general TouchWiz apps cannot be used in AOSP ROMs. On a personal note I loath the TW phone and contacts app. Mainly because you cant swipe between the recently called, favorites, keypad etc.

who knows if the actual stock contact app is actually TW. I just like how it looks. The black background looks better than the white background of AOSP. The stock actually has the same screens where you can move back and forth. I am putting this topic to rest. It is a lost cause. I was going to see if I could replace it using root explorer, but decided against it and it wasnt worth the trouble. Oh well.

It deferentially requires the tw framework. If you want a dark AOSP contacts app search for it. There are lots of inverted stock apps floating around and incorporated into ROMs.

I love the material design messenger app, but the randomly assigned colors piss me off. Is there a modded apk or any way to set customize the background color? I would have thought google would have made in an option.
The only way you're going to be able to mod that is by decompiling the messenger apk and going from there. Seems like it would be a lot of work though. I could take a look it at but I doubt I have the know how in order to do it.

Crappy Half-Solution
I've been watching this thread hoping for a more elegant (i.e. code-based solution) but for the time being I found a sort-of work around. First, uninstall the messenger app. Then say you want to change Person A from showing up orange to showing up purple, just for the sake of example. Google image search purple screen (or whatever, the point is to get a plain purple image of a shade similar to the app's). Download the pic to your phone, change the contact's picture to the plain color picture. Reinstall app, and open it up. Person A's conversation should now be purple. It should even be safe to change the contact's picture back, the point is to have the plain color photo as the contact picture when you install and first open up the app. You should be able to change as many contacts to whichever conversation colors (that the app comes preloaded with) you wish. Some notes: I did this on an AT&T galaxy s 4 active running kit kat 4.4.2 with the google messenger app being used as default sms app. My motivation was my gf saw her's was the orange and wanted to figure out a way to switch it to pink, lol. When I figured this method out to do just that, I changed a friend's convo color from green to red, and then an additional friend's from purple to green in order to verify. Again maybe this doesn't work all the time, or maybe it doesn't work on your device or maybe it's too much of a chore, but if you're looking to change conversation colors in this (otherwise very well put-together) app, this is the only way I've heard of so far. I don't know if it matters but I'm rooted stuck on touchwiz (locked bootloaders are a terrible thing, but at least it's de-odexed and I can mod it myself) and I use root browser to convert the google messenger app to a system app, because I like it better than Samsung's sms anyway.
Not getting my S6 until Monday, but two of the first things I plan on doing are installing the Google Now Launcher, and the Google Keyboard. As a long time Nexus user, hopefully this will get me as close to that vanilla android feel as possible.
So my question is...has anyone installed those apps? How is it running? Anything else you can do to make it as vanilla feeling as possible?
the problem with the google launcher is the samsung icons stay, you have to wait for a lollipop theme to be available on the gs6 theme store
I use nova launcher and a LP icon pack. i also set the animations in nova to be LP and the google now search as LP style

That was my other thought. Haven't used Nova Launcher in a while...but might be using now just for the lollipop icons. Looks like lollipop icons comes baked into nova launcher now, awesome.
How about Google Now? Would be awesome to get it via swipe to the left in nova...but doesn't look like that's possible. Any suggestions for that?

I actually use the stock LP icons in nova. Looks fine for me. I dont use google now because the lack of customization, the icons/drawer are too big.

Looks good. Any good ways to mess with the pulldown and quick settings? Seems like the notification shade and settings pages are the only thing that will be "touchwiz" at that point.

No way to mess with the look of them, thatd be related to rooting/roms/mods
I did remove any quick setting toggles so there would only be 5 that i use regularly

I can live with that. Does the built in themes affect the look though? Can set a different theme to mess with the shade, and then use Nova.

I'm waiting for other themes so i can find one I like. But I would imagine the system themes from samsung would affect the look of everything else, and then the launcher would be overtop and be the "visual" styling for stock android
One thing I'm missing is the priority setting for notifications. Stock android you could set volume profile to priority and get only calls/texts from starred/priority contacts. Then could also set an auto time interval

Samsung has some built in do not disturb stuff though right? On my nexus 5 I use "Nights keeper" at night so I get phone calls, but everything else is silent. Can set whitelists and everything.
The google keyboard is a touch laggy at times on the GS6 for me, specifically when swipe/slide typing. So are third party launchers. It's very small though. Some won't notice it I bet

The themes do change the shade, and practically every other aspect of the look, except the icons as mentioned, if you're using other than stock launcher.
I am using the latest nova launcher.

I feel pretty confident that this will take off and be Hugh...Plus for the themers it probably will make their work easier since it will probably come with some sort of themer package. This is one of the best parts of the phone is the ability to make it look different!
