i am in the market to buy a new smartphone but confuse which one to go with. In past i have used iphone 3gs and iphone 4s never tried android.
so i want to buy a best android smartphone , but confuse because as report suggest Samsung GS5 will be launched in january, so i want to know
should i buy nexus 5 , wait for samsung gs5 or buy any other smartphone ?

The Nexus 5 seems to be pretty solid. It does not have all the functions the s5 will probably have, but at least what I did was buy the Nexus 5 unlocked from Google so I didn't extend my contract with ATT and when the next latest greatest comes out I will buy that on my upgrade from ATT. Hard to argue with a good phone that the total cost is what I would pay for a subsidized phone and with the subsidized phone I would have to extend my contract with ATT.
I for one will never purchase another Samsung phone with the whole Knox security situation

Honestly, if this is your first android phone I would recommend the galaxy s5. Nexus devices are more targeted at android enthusiasts/purists and don't have the bells and whistles that a lot of the others do. If you're not planning to unlock and flash custom roms and kernels then you're losing the biggest advantage of the phone (in my opinion). But if money really isn't an issue, then you could just buy both and sell the one you decide against.

i have jailbroken my iphone 4s so i am kind aware of all these , yes i don't have much idea about roms and flash but i will learn
so just tell me is 16gb enough ? i will be playing games . and do u think gs5 will released in jan 2014 ? or march ?

In that case, go with the n5...it will be much easier to unlock than the s5. I would be surprised if the s5 came out in January; they are targeting a "Q1" release date so to me that means March.
I actually just ordered my n5 last night and had the same dilemma about the storage. I don't usually store a lot of music or movies on my phone but in the end I decided on the 32gb version since there's no external sd slot and it's only $50 more. 16gb may be enough, but keep in mind that you'll really only have about 12-13gb of user storage available.

Ignore the comment about the Nexus 6. The Nexus 5 just launched and it'll be awhile before a new Nexus device is launched. You're looking to get an Android smartphone and soon.
Choosing between the Galaxy S5 (unofficial) and the recently released Nexus 5, it's a matter of opinion. The Nexus phones and Galaxy series phones have always been different. The Galaxy S5 is going to be significantly more expensive than the Nexus 5.
Currently you can buy the Nexus 5, 16GB model full retail from Google for $349 and the Galaxy S4 costs $749. I owned the Galaxy S4 for 6 months and switched to the Nexus 5 and enjoy the Nexus 5 more than. You can buy a 32GB Nexus 5 model from Google for $399. The Samsung Galaxy phones will have Touchwiz (their launcher) along with the Android you'll be getting. For the past many years, people have "hated" Android for being laggy and having bad battery life. Those typically come from added 'bells and whistles' that most people don't end up using. In my opinion, the Nexus 5 is an affordable smartphone with decent specs, Galaxy s5 isn't even released yet and will likely cost close to twice as much. Sure the S5 will probably have better specs since it's newer and costs a lot more.
From personal experience and I'm coming from an iPhone as well, I liked the S3 it was a nice phone with a good amount of options, didn't care for the S4, it was loaded with lots of features that I'd never use other than to show someone "hey look what this can do" It was big and felt like a mini tablet, total overkill for a phone unless you like that sort of thing.
I didn't care much for the Nexus 4 design, but I really like the Nexus 5, my only complaint is the camera which is supposed to be fixed with an update.
So, if you want lots and lots of features on a super expensive phone that won't receive updates quickly (unless you install a custom rom) go for the Galaxy S5
If you want an affordable phone that looks and works well and gets fast updates, go for the nexus.
PS: My only other complaint about the Nexus is that there's no Otterbox for it, but since Google has their own cases it doesn't bother me so much.

I don't know what you mean by multi-tasking experience? If you mean app-switching, there is a dedicated button on the Nexus 5 on the far right which allows easy app switching.
If you're referring to the "Multi-Window" feature to split your screen in two apps, no. That's a Samsung Multi-Window feature that the Galaxy S4 and Note 2/3 have. There are other things similar to that which you can get on a rooted Nexus 5, but it isn't stock.
Just my final thoughts on this... Carriers usually have a return policy. If you like the note setup then maybe Samsung is more to your liking? And about the space.... Since the n5 has no SD slot I bought the largest.... Would rather potentially waste 50$ than constantly run out of space and dislike my phone because of it.

I have been a happy owner of a Galaxy Note 2 on Sprint since the phone launched. I truly do love the phone, and I can't find any core complaints about it, however, I find myself really craving a Nexus 4.
I have jumped into Android development with my Note 2, and have thus been finding that this powerhouse of a phone is just too unique of a device for me to develop apps for 4.1.2 + and cover a broad amount of devices and test cases. I am also not too excited about flashing any custom ROMs or anything on the Note 2 as I lose much of the native functionality (which I like). Coming from an original EVO 4G, which I flashed the hell out of, I am missing this lifestyle.
Long story short, I am looking to perhaps sell my Note 2, pick up a new 16gb Nexus 4 (when it comes available) with the proceeds, and start my PhoneGap app development on a more more suitable, and uber-current piece of hardware. Has anyone else done a similar process before? Is there anything I should look out for when trying to make this switch? Will Sprint raise hell for any reason?
If I could afford to just keep my Note 2 and buy a Nexus 4, I would, but unfortunately I am not that wealthy. I am really just looking for opinions or impressions on something like this. Also perhaps anyone's experience in doing something similar.

If u upgraded to the Note 2 and extended your contract u may be out of luck. Nexus 4 does not support CDMA bands which Sprint uses. So unless u switching to GSM then I dunno what to say aside from the fact that Note 2 to Nexus 4 is a downgrade IMO

You'd need to switch to a provider that uses SIM cards such as T-Mobile or ATT.
If development makes you happy and you're out of contract or can afford the ETF (although that might be almost as much as just buying the N4) - go for it. But I agree it's a downgrade that lacks a lot of nice features the Note II offers. It'd be a trade-off (not to mention the change of carrier).
Great points. I didn't think about being out of luck and having to switch carriers. I suppose I'll just have to keep my eyes out for a used Galaxy Nexus I can pick up for $100 or so to develop on.
The Galaxy Nexus got the 4.2 Upgrade right? I would really just like to start preparing for Android Development, and be able to have the best broad test-cases for 4.1.2 and above.
Not to mention I would like to start playing with the SPen SDK

Not sure if the Verizon Nexus got the update yet. Since it's carrier branded there is bloatware and also has to go through the carrier for updates. It was late in receiving 4.0.4 and also 4.1

I'm new to all this so please bare with me a little bit. I've used apple products for many years, but in getting a little sick of iOS7 and the lack of jaibreak. So I've decided to make the leap to android (something I never thought I would do).
I have my choices narrowed down to the Nexus 5 and LG G2. Both phones at currently available for $99 on 2 yr term. The Nexus only comes in the 16gb version while the G2 is 32gb for the same price. I'm having a tough time deciding between the two. I like the Nexus 5 because it gets the OS updates fast and won't require removal of bloat. It's also unlocked.
The G2 seems to have a slight hardware edge with battery life, camera and screen size. It's also 32gb, but it's not stock android and is carrier locked.
My question is, given the same price for both, is it better to get the nexus 5 or get the G2 and use a custom rom to mimic the stock nexus 5? Will it be a hassle to keep the G2 updated, and how bug free would the experience be?

They are not the same price, the G2 is like $600 because of all the monthly payments you have to make. I'd go with the Nexus 5 because once you buy it, you actually own it.

Sound like you are on Sprint, right? I would say just get the Nexus 5 from the Play Store, and then sign up for the $60 BYOD on Sprint. You would end up saving more money. Also, I just don't like the LG skin, so I'm a little biased.
PS The battery life on the G2 is much much better than the N5 though, so that's something to think about too, if that's important to you.

Not sure I follow. I'm in Canada on Rogers. I'm currently out of contract and don't really intend to switch carriers because my wife and I share a plan and she's locked in for 2 more years.
The hardware upgrade for either phone is $99 with a 2 year contract, I'm not changing plans or paying anything additional, just $99 to upgrade.
Well, if you were into the jailbreaking scene then you would most definitely be into rooting, custom roms etc. Therefore, I vote for the N5. Nexus = Endless possibilities. Also, with the new features implemented by many roms such as ParanoidAndroid, Cyanogenmod etc, you'd never get bored.

On Rogers in Canada. Battery life is a little important, but i almost always have a plug nearby to charge. Memory size is also a little important.
I'll most likely be rooting the G2 to bring it to the stock level of the N5. I'm just not sure how easy that is to do.

Then you have a tough decision to make, honestly. A huge advantage of the Nexus 5 is that it packs excellent specs into a device that is affordable off contract. Buying the Nexus subsidized on a contract kind of defeats this cost-saving advantage, as you'll end up paying quite a bit more for the device over your two year contract. Price-wise, you'd be getting a much larger subsidy if you bought the G2 on contract vs. the N5.
Now, comparing the devices: I prefer the look and feel of the N5 hardware over the G2, but the G2 has a better battery and camera. And I really dislike the button placement on the G2, though it doesn't seem to bother others. And other than these things they're neck and neck performance-wise. You'll get quicker Android updates, more xda development activitiy, and kit-kat out of the box with the Nexus 5.
I can't say much for the g2 since I haven't used it so my response would be biased.
However what I can say is go look at the G2 development forums for your carrier and compare that to the N5 development section here.
Personally I've been with the galaxy S line since its launch (Galaxy S Epic 4g, Galaxy s3 and Galaxy s4) and when the Nexus 5 launched at such a low price I just couldn't pass up the fact that its a "universal" phone where developers can create a ROM and it works for everyone easily. Where as my previous phones (and the G2) split the developers up based on their carrier. Some devs ported their ROMs to all carriers for their device and that is much respected but I feel the N5 being "universal" can't be beat if you're a software junkie like myself.

Personally I've been with the galaxy S line since its launch (Galaxy S Epic 4g, Galaxy s3 and Galaxy s4) and when the Nexus 5 launched at such a low price I just couldn't pass up the fact that its a "universal" phone where developers can create a ROM and it works for everyone easily. Where as my previous phones (and the G2) split the developers up based on their carrier. Some devs ported their ROMs to all carriers for their device and that is much respected but I feel the N5 being "universal" can't be beat if you're a software junkie like myself.

I am a bit of a software junkie, but only to the point where I've customized my phone just the way I like it. If I can achieve that customization with the G2 and be able to maintain it without too many bugs then I may lean towards the G2. It's hard to pass up that extra battery life and storage capacity. Ugh this is a tough choice.
I'll take your advice and check the G2 forums though!

Your welcome. By glancing at the g2 forums I don't see a KitKat ROM, not sure if that's important to you or not.
The way I see it is go with the G2 if battery life, Camera and Storage outweigh your needs for the best software.
I don't use the camera for anything professional so the n5 camera is plenty for me, the battery life doesn't matter because I have wireless charging plates I just throw my phone on around the house. And the storage is completely different for everyone but 16gb is enough for me currently (Can't have as many 1gb games installed but never played them all at once anyway on my s4)

I would say that's your biggest conundrum right there. Can't wait till my contract's up in Feb and I can go to Koodo or Virgin. Or perhaps not wait that long even and jump ship when I see a better deal
On-topic, as a noob to Android customization and a customer of Rogers, I would say go for the G2. It seems you wish to stay on-contract and you'd be getting the better deal hardware-wise.

I appreciate your input. It's not that I want I stay under contract, it's just more logical that way right now. And yes I fully agree on the hardware aspect. The only thing nexus has that's better is the software support. I'm eager to learn about rooting and using custom mods, buts it's hard to justify the nexus purchase just for that.
I did read somewhere that G2 will get KitKat eventually, maybe it'll get better?

LG is planning to release KitKat eventually, but there's no set date. Also, from prior experience, if you're going to rely on official OTA updates, Rogers is the worst on releasing them in a timely manner. My prior phone was an S2 LTE (Skyrocket) and it was the last one out of the S2 family to upgrade to ICS, not to mention it was not optimized at all and actually ran worse than Gingerbread. Thankfully, it was all good when the JB update showed up but that took a while as well. Since I'm not getting KitKat on it, I bought the N5 off the play store since carriers are only carrying 16 GB.

I can see the issue there. I'm hoping to not rely on Rogers and their OTA and just root it and update it myself. That reminds me, I should prob expect even more bloat with Rogers.
Or I could just go with the nexus and never have to worry about that.

As noted before if you want the quickest updates (official and unofficial) than the n5 is a must, if you want to take a lot of pictures than the camera on the G2 and storage space is better at that.

Have you thought about getting a Iphone 5s on contract, selling it, then buying the nexus 5? I would do that instead of getting the nexus 5 directly from the carrier. That way you end up with extra money in your pockets since you can sell the Iphone for more then the nexus 5 costs from the play store.

This is a great idea. Take a look at the resale value of the phones available without a contract. Pick the one that gives you the best profit and do that. Use the money to buy a Nexus 5 if you like the phone. I did that recently and actually have another $100 extra to spend on accessories.

none at all. I have kept my older phone as a music player (nexus s). I love the nexus 5. My only regret is I couldn't get the 32gb version. But I will make do!

Nope. My Legend deserved the rest and I'm loving the Nexus.
I think depending on how much you paid for it. Stateside is pretty good value.. Euro side not so much imo.
Nope, I came from a Moto Atrix... Living with a giant middle finger from Motorola. Used as many custom roms as I could to keep it relevant, but that thing to me was basically treated as DOA. The most expensive, ignored, bastard child of modern smartphones I've ever bought... I paid $1000 for it outright day 1 when I was working in S.Korea. Somewhat ahead of it's time, but treated like garbage.
Will not purchase another Moto phone... which is kind of odd considering I own the godsend from mother Google.
Now if Moto makes a Nexus, not quite sure what I'll do... I've blacklisted Motorola.
Could get a nice deal with Tele2 so went for it.
Cheap subscription, lots of minutes, and a nice phone.

My old phone was a Nexus S, and although that was immense, no i don't regret it.
Had my head turned by the HTC One and if the Moto X was available here that would get a look in, but would still probably go for the N5.

I regret not getting a Note 3, but then again I did purchase this device outright at less than 2/3 the price of a Note 3, and there are tremendous amounts of development already available considering how new this device is.
I think I lose and gain some. Battery life however would technically still be better on the Note 3, but I ain't really complaining here since I'm not really getting wakelocks. I do miss the big screen however and the more vibrant display I did gain superb call quality and call volume however

Well, I came from owning a Note 2 for about 8 months. I'd say wait for Note 4. No reason to jump phones so many times so soon. This phone is quite well for the price.
No regret at all. Love the N5. :good:

well im elegible for an upgrade now.. And was thinking about getting a phone sell it so i can pay my credit card bill from the nexus 5... But not sure if i should return the nexus and just buy a note 3/s4 which imo will have a better sell price when new phones come out...
I think the nexus will sell used for $200 where the samsungs will probably be around 300-350
Basically for me both of them are the same price...
This is easily the best phone I've ever owned and having stock Android that is not some skinned-and-never-updated crap is a godsend. I've always put ROMs on my other Android phones before but I really don't think I will on this one.

Yes, I have some regrets. The battery life doesn't feel much better than my GNex and I wish the screen was bigger. Not saying I don't want to keep it, I'm just not sure. Maybe with the right kernel and apps it will be perfect. Or maybe I should've gotten a G2. I just don't know how the ROMs on that would turn out, and I like having wireless charging.
Now that the Nexus 6 cat is out of the bag and it's obvious the Nexus 6 isn't the successor to the Nexus 5, does anyone think it's still possible that Google will release a 2014 model Nexus 5? While the Nexus 6 looks like a beautiful device, it's monstorous and breaks the bank for many members of the Nexus customer base. Does anyone think that just maybe Google has new Nexus 5 model (i.e. a Motorola Nexus 5) up their sleeve but they're keeping it under wraps because they don't want to overshadow the new flagship devices with higher profit margins? Truth be told, I and I'm sure many others don't want a phablet and aren't willing to spend $650 on a phone so an updated Nexus 5 would be a welcome edition to the new lineup. We all know that inflation is a reality so the days of a high-end handset for $350 are over. Personally I would be willing to pay up to $500 for a Nexus 5 with 2014 hardware and flagship build quality as much as I love my Nexus 5. If Google were to release a 2014 Nexus 5 it would keep in tradition with the Nexus program since its inception and would provide developers with a top-of-the-line developer phone for a reasonable price. So does anyone else think that this is a possibility or is it all just wishful thinking?

It would be welcome, but it makes no sense whatsoever to do that.
If I want to refresh my Nexus5, I plug in an Anker external battery.
Or I could use my OnePlus.
It's possible to release a smaller phone they did keep the 5 so it's not likely to replace it. Now what the name is if a smaller device is released in 2015 is another story. Nexus 6 mini, nexus 6, Android silver, nexus 5, "nexus", nexus "insert oem name like xperia, one etc
Anything is possible, last year it would seem impossible for Google to release a 6 inch phone but they did.
I don't think they will have a "2014" nexus 5 edition, but will keep selling the 5 as a smaller version for people who don't like phones that big.
"Updated" Nexus 5 (or whatever it will be called) with 5'' screen seems to be a logical step to me. Just a question of time.

I will admit that's some good thinking. Unfortunately, for profit margin concerns like you stated... I don't think it would make sense for them. Most people can afford a flagship or have jobs. The iPhone 6 Plus is a rather big device. Google knew they had to stay another step ahead of Apple and that's probably why were seeing a phablet and not a phone.
I don't have an issue with the size whatsoever. I have an issue with that price though. If I wanted to pay 550 or more for a phone.. I would have gotten an S5 or LG G3. I remember my total from purchasing the Nexus 5 32GB wasn't even over 435$ with taxes included. In fact the 16GB model was so cheap I decided to spend a little extra and get a bigger model since it wasn't pricey to begin with, got a case too.
Now take the following into consideration. You have to pay taxes on the price of the Nexus 6, and most people will get a case or want a case and perhaps insurance. When it's all said and done you're looking at a rather large 3 digit figure.
The only easy way most of us are going to even touch a Nexus 6 will unfortunately be through pay as you go programs such as JUMP from T-Mobile where you pay a monthly fee. If the Nexus 6 survives the hype... Ill be looking into JUMP. And hopefully Motorola + carriers don't have an agreement to lock the device. I think Motorola and instantly think of Verizon and those very not sexy locked bootloaders.

Adding to this, the Nexus 6 doesn't have a full aluminum construction either and this is probably just what the other OEMs wanted. I wonder by how much the next flagships from LG, Samsung, HTC would cost, they're bound to increase the price even further.
Gonna wait for the nexus 5 2015 edition or go for the new moto x seems a much more vfm device this time around.
One theory of the price hike I have heard is that OEM's are getting upset about making a device for google, then getting undercut by that device.... Which makes sense... So maybe there will be no more cheap Nexus devices
I dont see it as OEM play, but more like carrier pressure, nexus have been from the first google play release, a developer phone, not an premium phone but a top of the line afordable phone for developers to get something to work with. Since the nexus line never needed publicity and were always based on existing devices no great efford was needed to create it so with some help from from google it could be launch at a good price.

I think the price hike is due to them making it available and being sold by all carriers. If they sold it in the play store for a cheaper price, they would be competing with all the carriers. Everyone would just buy it through Google and activate it on whatever carrier they are on. And I don't think the carriers would be happy about that.
And as far as a new Nexus 5. We don't really NEED one. Our Nexus 5 is still a great performer. Google doesn't need to spend more money on a spec bump phone.
I could see some sort of the Nexus 5. I don't envision Google going forward with only a phablet as there are a lot of people who just won't a phone that big, they'd be cutting off a big chunk of the market by not keeping a more reasonably sized phone (and reasonably priced). And if they don't keep a smaller one, people will just buy a Moto G or Moto X instead, which means less money for Google in the end.

Everyone in here is talking like the Nexus 5 is outdated and doesn't exist anymore. I'm not understanding why people feel that the Nexus 5 needs to be updated right now.

I didn't say it did, but it's not very often a device gets overlooked one year and ever survives for another new model phase. That's the concern...

I don't think they overlooked it. I think they still believe that the Nexus 5 is still great as it is (which it is). So they decided to add another device to their lineup. A bigger device is good as another option since a lot of phones are going that route and seem to be popular. The Nexus 5 is still going to be sold along with the Nexus 6 so they aren't tossing it to the curb or anything. Next year the Nexus 5 will probably be due for an update.

Hi, everyone. I'm a proud owner of a Nexus 5 and I've been buying the new Nexus every year since the Galaxy Nexus. I live in Bosnia, and I've gotten lucky over the past few years with transportation, however this year I can't get it until June so I've been trying to make my mind up between a few other phones I can get immediately. I don't think it's much of an upgrade to buy an HTC One M8, or a Galaxy S5, so I've realized that the best upgrades to my current phone are the LG G3 and Note 4. Are there any other good phones that I'm forgetting?
The Note 4 would be perfect, but I really hate Touchwiz. I'm annoyed by it in every way shape and form. My friend has an S5, which is a pretty powerful phone, and Touchwiz still manages to stutter. If I was to root and flash Cyanogenmod onto the Note 4 I'd be losing quite a bit of what makes it the Note 4, so I'm really torn about that. My budget is around $700 so the Note 4 is a bit out of my price range, but if it's really worth it I could get the extra cash.
On the other hand, I have the G3. I've used one for a couple of hours today and it stutters quite a bit. This is probably because of its software. Would I lose much if I was to root and flash Cyanogenmod on it feature wise? Also, it has a Snapdragon 801 with an Adreno 330, while both the Nexus 6 and Note 4 have a Snapdragon 805 with an Adreno 420. Is there a significant difference in performance?
