I'm trying to unlock bootloader for my inspire and I keep getting an error:
Error Code: 173.
Error Reason: Check Rule Fail with exception.
I've read a thread that was posted about a year ago and it said something about the website messing up.....? I dunno what to do..
I did it with my HTC one VX perfectly about 2 months ago, but it wont let me do it
Can anyone explain to me why its doing this?
I tried going through the process on google chrome
Any reason you just want to unlock and not s-off? You can do much more, alot easier with s-off, and its reversable, unlike unlocking.

Hey, I have been coming to XDA for almost 2 years now and have always been able to find an answer to my question until now... So this is my first post.
I am attempting to unlock my HTC Rezound using the HTCDEV.com bootloader unlock. I have downloaded and installed all the resources they requested but when I paste the key and hit submit this is what I get...
"We're sorry, but it appears your attempt to unlock the bootloader on this device has failed. This could be caused by several factors including simple errors in the entry of the unlock token, problems with your device, or a lack of manufacturer support for the unlocking process. Please see the specific error code listed below, and try again if necessary.
Error Code: 173.

Has anyone else received this error? any solutions?
Please and thank you!!

Which variant do u have (att, rogers)?

You may want to do a bit more research before attempting these types of things in the future.
1. HTCDev is for unlocking your bootloader, which if you have AT&T, doesn't work.
2. A root method is available in another thread in the development section.
3. The development section is not here to post questions to developers. It is here for developers to communicate with one another and to post their work. There is a specific forum for questions called the Q&A forum.
Hope this helps.
This belongs in Q & A but if you have the att version, you cannot use htcdev to unlock your bootloader. It is being blocked by att.

and dont post here right? ...post in Q&A for future ref
Thanks
As stated already, the AT&T version is locked out and cant be unlocked by HTCDEV. There are already several threads with ongoing discussions about this and attempts to get around it.
Also, moved to Q&A...
Hi all,
Again I've searched everywhere and can't find this so I must post my second in 1.5 years of lurking.
I'm usually good at breaking in to my phones but turns out I know only enough to be dangerous. I think the backup.ab file is my last option before I give up on this phone. Basically I can't re-unlock the bootloader due to an error 150 after making a mess of my phone and supercid (returned to stock values) etc. I'm hoping a full restore will help me pass the bootloader unlock however I didn't learn about it until recent so don't have one. Something is different about the RUU's maybe or possibly htcdev doesn't give out more than one unlock code.
Feel free to help if you can by offering a link to an s4 backup.ab file, another way to unlock without htcdev, or using this code...

I'm in the same boat. I have the original unlock code as I thought it would always work but my token has changed 2 times noticeably in the last week so I don't think it will work. Also I have a full backup so have my original boot and recovery but can't write them. That's why I asked about the backup.adb file since I thought maybe it will bypass security and bring me back to stock and perhaps original token.
How can you obtaain a backup.adb?

That's what I'd like to know but you can make your own prior to unlocking and rooting or whatever you do with adb backup command and follow directions on your phone. It was pretty quick and painless with my new android phone. Do a search and you'll see more info on the subject.
I've tried multiple times at trying to unlock my HTC One X bootloader, I've just about given up at this point, Every time I try to Unlock it I get this same error On HTCDev
"We're sorry, but it appears your attempt to unlock the bootloader on this device has failed. Error Code: 160.

Any Help?
Hello all,
Has anyone tried to unlock the Bootloader by following the steps given by HTC in HTCdev.com?
Is it the same as S-Off ?
I have done it, and no it isn't the same as S-Off. Unlocking the bootloader allows root access and access to only some system areas. Critical areas such as the radio firmware are still locked down as far as I understand. when the bootloader is unlocked the phone is still in an S-On state. You can still flash custom roms and poke around a bit with S-On
S-Off allows access to all the areas, even the critical ones and is much more dangerous as far as accidentally making your phone inoperable.

Thanks. I am unable to obtain Temproot on Sunshine. The prompt says unlocking Bootloader from HTCdev.com and then trying a different root method might work. Any tips on this?

There's a tutorial on YouTube, on how to use HTC.dev to unlock the bootloader. It shows a HTC 10 but still the same process.
The only part that will give you a headache is the bootloader token (which is covered in the video) I suggest you read up more and watch videos on the entire process and what the meaning of it all is.

It's still the same as back then. Last one I done was the HTC Droid DNA.
Here's the YouTube video I used for reference.

Haven't used Sunshine, just got back to Android a month ago from IOS. Good luck
I am submitting the form with the unlock token on HTCdev website and get the success message, but I never receive the email with the attachment! Account is registered to an gmail-account. Checked all folder including spam. I am using chrome as browser, tried two different computers (win 10, win 7) . I am not getting any response? The submitted token varies every time its generated even on the same PC. I thought the token is something like a guid, so there fore it should be the same every time generated? Thanks for your help!
