Isn't the Bootloader already unlocked on the GPE I9505G? I was able to root and install custom recovery without going through the bootloader unlock process.
Please don't quote the whole OP. Last I checked it would be impossible to flash root or custom recovery on a locked boot loader.

So my point is why tell people who have the I9505G GPE phone they need to unlock the bootloader to root their phone?

You cannot Root a or install Custom Recovery on a Locked Boot loader.
The GE S4 could fall under the Nexus category but I don't know anyone willing to try it except you which you obviously did not do your homework and took a risk. If you did root the I9505G successfully on a locked BL then unroot relock and try it again then I will have all OP updated. You could even film it and upload it to YouTube so we can show it..

My point was I was able to root and install a custom recovery on my GPE I9505G without having to do the bootloader unlock. So my question is the GPE I9505G unlocked? Or was my phone an anomoly?
Not to drag this on and on, but I am 99% sure that I never unlocked bootloader on my GE either. That was one of the draws when these phones were announced while developers were struggling to unlock the ATT bootloader. Looking back in google search, it appears that the phone was to be delivered with unlocked bootloaders. I could be mistaken about this, but it is my recollection.

The phone shipped with a locked boot loader but falls under the Nexus category so CF Auto Root is able to flash and OEM unlock that's why when you run it on a locked BL and chainfires exploit runs when the phone reboots you see the unlocked symbol.
But to go back to the guy who's initial question. Yes you can Root without fastboot OEM unlock but only for select phones mentioned. It would BEHOOVE YOU to not look for shortcuts and Learn how to install the SDK and use fastboot FOR WHICH the guide was INTENDED. Its a MUST Have in certain situations.

MJ, thanks for the clarification. I have used SDK tools and must have unlocked my bootloader as I flash kernals, ROMS and radios without issues.

This guide if used correctly and understood will help anyone when it comes to modding android phones. ADB is an absolute Must if you have an HTC phone, toolkits fail so having the Old School knowledge is a life saver and is quicker once you get used to it. My goal with this guide is bigger than one phone or tablet. It gives you the core skills. Hope it helps

In my case I didn't use Chain Fire to root my phone, I used odin to flash a rooted stock rom, and then installed TWRP Manager and installed TWRP.

That's not What you said and that's a stock pre-rooted Odin package that does the BL Unlock for you. Do me a favor drat get off my thread or be absolutely clear on what your saying instead of confusing everyone.
SO FINALLY TO BE CLEAR GO BACK AND READ!! YOU CANNOT ROOT A LOCKED BOOTLOADER except in the cases previously mentioned X, Y, Z .
CASE CLOSED
I wrote you an easy guide to use adb but you want to be lazy use Odin firmware packages and then troll this thread when you missed the Guides purposes all together

No need to be hostile. My query was that the GE , I9505G, had an unlocked bootloader to begin with, and didn't need unlocking.

Your query was wrong! The I9505G does not have a unlocked bootloader to begin with you flashed a firmware package that does the work for you. What I am trying to do here is get you to understand how it works so you or someone else doesn't brick your phone because you think this is how everything works. The I9505G is different than other Samsung phones. If you tried to run a root exploit without Odin in this case on a locked bootloader you would brick your phone. I hope this clears things up for you. I hope that you go back re read the OP here and XDA forum rules and how important searching and reading is before posting potentially damaging comments. MJ

I don't want to throw gas on this discussion but the info is wrong. I installed TWRP and rooted long before I ever unlocked the bootloader. The ONLY reason I unlocked it at all was to help Chainfire test something, and that was about 6 weeks after I got the phone. You CAN flash custom recovery or other unsigned code without unlocking. It's quite possible. I've done it. It's one of the VERY few phones I've ever seen that allows it.

Yeah I know I made the point a couple posts back that this phone is like the nexus but I also wanted to get a good adb guide posted here for those who would like to learn and use it.
Our phone is unique in that sense. Hope this guide helps those who want to install and use adb.

Would be incredibly useful! Did you notice that in MKG they removed the ability to load an OTA from external sdcard? I had to sideload it this morning. Not a big deal but if you've never done it before it can be a little confusing. An ADB guide would rock!

Hence your adb guide feel free to add to it or I can put in a sideload guide, system dump..etc..etc.

A good idea. The trick to sideload isn't so much the adb. It's the damn drivers. I cheat and use Koush's universal ADB driver. I use adb sideload for installing root with touchless CWM, as well. These are very useful things to know how to do.

Strange I never have any problems using adb to flash or side load anything but the universal driver is an excellent tool

Whether your a noob or not, it nice to see a step by step guide as S-off is developer preview only and doesn't come with much instructions. I have simply Collaborated what is out there into one easy thread. Nothing complex.
here is my very small simple detailed guide. I have put a lot of Time and effort to make sure everyone can benefit so Just push Thanks if it helped
Click here for TROUBLESHOOTING OR FAQ
Step 1. To S-OFF your Sensation - (You do not need to do this if you have S-off already or done this before) - WORKING NOW for TMOUS users
Visit http://revolutionary.io/
download the application for your operating System. AND EXTRACT IT TO A FOLDER
YOU MAY NEED TO DISABLE YOUR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM- Norton is flagging up Revolutionary as a Virus when it isn't
IMPORTANT
Fill out the form under the download links with your OS, Device, Hboot Version and Serial number. This will give your beta key to enable you to S - OFF. Make a note of this.
How To get your Hboot Version - 3 methods below
1. Run the revolutionary Utility you just downloaded from http://revolutionary.io/ and if it has found your device it should read
"Found your Device: HTC Sensation Z710* Applications -> Development)
4. With the phone switched on (not in HBOOT, just the regular home screen), plug in your USB cable and select HTC sync mode.(IGNORE any warning messages on your phone telling you it cannot find HTC Sync )
5. Launch revolutionary.exe. It should detect the phone and ask for your beta key. Type it (BE CAREFUL, as its case sensitive) or copy and paste it in.
If Revolutionary fails to find your phone verify you have all the drivers installed, try disk drive mode or charging mode (Linux users can use disk drive mode. Confirmed to be working by others)
6. Once you have entered your beta key correctly, follow any on screen prompts or actions from revolutionary and wait for it to S-Off,
7. You're done. Your Device will Successfully have S-OFF....if it hangs on method 3 and doesn't S-Off. See post 2 below for solutions.
IF REVOLUTIONARY SAYS FAILED YOUR PHONE IS NOT SUPPORTED. Go back and check hboot using the methods above. some users are told its failed and they still have S off now. If you have S-off your hboot will now be 1.17.1011 and revolutionary will tell you now your device is not supported
8. Revolutionary will now ask you to Install clockwork recovery mod after S OFF. Type N and install it manually below (the recovery provided is v4.0.1.4 doesn't charge when device is switched off, the one below v5.0.0.1 does charge)
9. Your Device now is S-off.
To install clockwork recovery for the sensation. Follow step 2!
STEP 2. To INSTALL Recovery - v5.0.0.8
1. Download recovery v5.0.0.8 for the Sensation [URL="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1277975"]HERE:[/URL] or Multiupload

3. Turn off your phone FUlly and reboot into the Bootloader/HBOOT screen (see post above on how to get to hboot screen)
4. Press Volume up to Accept when it asks" Do you want to start the update"
5. Press Power Off to Reboot back to android after installation is successful (normal screen with homescreen)
6. Delete PG58IMG from your memory card and you can now root using step 3 below or install a custom ROM using CWM (Customs Roms are already rooted)
7. OPTIONAL: Boot into recovery or Completely switch off (Fastboot disabled or remove and reinsert battery)
Follow STEP 4 SUPER CID sub steps 1-6 to get adb running
8. Enter the command "adb shell cat /sys/devices/platform/htc_battery/power_supply/battery/status" Phone will confirm it is "CHARGING"
Charging issues fixed with new clockwork recovery. writing is now BLUE not purple or orange
Step 3. To permanently root your Sensation - (This means you will NOT LOSE ROOT on rebooting)
1. Download the file su-2.3.6.3-ef-signed.zip from here: DOWNLOAD
2. Copy su-2.3.6.3-ef-signed.zip to your SD card root folder (main folder of your memory card)
3. Start clockworkmod recovery (instructions below. See To Start Clockwork recovery)
4. BACKUP YOUR ROM USING CWM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ROOT!
5. Navigate to "Backup & Restore" using the Volume Down button and press select (power button to select) then select "Backup"
6. Select "install zip from sdcard" after backing up
7. Then select "Choose zip from sdcard"

10. Then go back
11. Then reboot.
12. You're rooted!
If you are getting error messages regarding S-OFF, Rooting or installation - Troubleshoot below in post 2
See POST 2(HERE):
STEP 4. WRITE SUPER CID [YOU ONLY NEED TO DO THIS ONCE]- (continue from step 11 below if you have already done this)
(allows you to flash ANY ROM to the device regardless of the carrier. Just click RUU.EXE)
1. Download adb tools here: download for WINDOWS or download for LINUX or from the attachments below
2. On your pc click on your local disk C: Drive (or D: drive for some) (WINDOWS users: Start > My computer > Local Disk (C)
3. Create a new folder called "adb" and extract the files from adb.zip into it. Make sure it doesn't create another folder in the adb folder when extracting

4. open command prompt (or terminal for linux) and type "cd" "followed by the path to your adb folder" (windows users can type "cd C:\adb")
5. Ensure your phone is switched on (regular home screen) and connect it by USB in charging mode (Ensure usb debugging is on settings)
6. enter the command "adb devices". This is to confirm your phone is connected. (It should come back with list of devices attached and your serial number)
7. enter the command "adb reboot-bootloader". (nothing further required device WILL reboot in bootloader)
IF it doesn't you can Manually put the phone in the bootloader/hboot mode
Navigate to fastboot by pressing volume down and pressing power button to select (power off > vol down + power on)
It will take you to the fastboot bootloader screen on your phone
Connect your phone via USB
Your Screen should now read fastboot USB
8. enter the command "fastboot oem writecid 11111111"
9. enter the command "fastboot reboot-bootloader (Wait for it to reboot the bootloader)
10. enter the command "fastboot getvar cid" [it should confirm your CID is 11111111]
11. enter the command "fastboot reboot"
12. You can now flash any ROM you like.
To reinstall any stock ROM after this or De-brand or reinstall a different type of Rom (European, Asian, US).
Just click here to download an Official Rom,
Connect to your phone in charging mode. click the "RUU_pyramid_*****.exe" file you downloaded and follow on screen instructions.
I can confirm SuperCID is successful as i just flashed a Tmous Rom (1.25.***) to my EU unbranded device to check. (added t-mobile tv and other carrier stuff to my apps list)
TO DE-BRAND OR REINSTALL STOCK ROM (Changes to Stock S-off, Removes Root and clockwork)
Reinstall your original stock ROM you had (e.g Vodafone, Tmous, Asian, European unbranded etc. if you are changing back to S-ON)
1. Backup all User Data and Apps (Titanium backup Recommended) SKIP THIS STEP IF YOU WANT TO WIPE EVERYTHING
2. Use the SUPERCID method above. (Confirmed to work)
3. If you cannot get superCID to work. Follow this by Alexp999. HERE: any problems PM ME and i will help
Your phone bootloader will read "PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL" after this, Root and clockwork will have been removed now
STEP 5 - CHANGING BACK TO S-ON - PROCEED WITH CAUTION. ONLY DO THIS IF YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO. BEWARE THERE IS A RISK OF BRICKING READ BEFORE GOING TO STEP 1.
YOU MUST Follow this correctly otherwise you could semi-brick your device (Semi bricks recovery by re-flashing RUU). If you follow it correctly YOU WILL GET S-ON SUCCESSFULLY -confirmed by other users
I cannot be held responsible if anything goes wrong but i will help in every situation. 2 unrecoverable bricks so far. 1 due to not flashing RUU
First time i did this with a custom ROM installed - semi-bricked my device (couldn't boot due to security warning as S-on doesn't work with custom roms), restored it using RUU.exe
Second time after S-off i took the following steps and successfully went back to S-ON without any problems and booted up into stock rom.
Confirmed to work by several others as well as myself
1. Follow Step 4 above to get SuperCID - Skip if you already have it
2. Restore your official stock Rom: Just click here to download an Official Rom RESTORE STOCK EVEN IF YOU JUST RESTORED IT RECENTLY OR ARE ALREADY ON STOCK ROM. This is to ensure nothing gets changed in stock for S-on to be successful
So if you are already on a stock ROM or you just went back to stock ROM, i don't care, restore the stock ROM again using the RUU.exe if you don't want to be bricked!
Connect to your phone in charging mode. click the "RUU_pyramid_*****.exe" file you downloaded and follow on screen instructions.
3. Make sure when you download the RUU. download the same or similiar RUU version as your phone came with (e.g. Tmous or EU or Asian etc). As long as you install a stock rom similiar to what you had you should be ok. FAILURE TO DO THIS MAY BRICK YOUR PHONE.
4. Switch your phone on now and let it boot for the first time and just skip through the welcome screen.
5. Go back to Step 4 - SUPERCID and go through 1 to 7 to get to the fastboot bootloader. (so just do what you did before, put adb files in local disk, adb reboot bootloader etc)
6. enter the command "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3" (Thanks Dazweeja)
7. Reboot into bootloader using "fastboot reboot-bootloader" or remove & reinsert the battery and press power on while keeping hold of volume down.
8. Bootloader should now read Pyramid PVT Ship S-ON RL.
9. Remove and reinsert the battery. Press power on as normal
You should now have S-on back and you can return your device or do whatever it is covered again under warranty.
10. IF IT DOESN'T REBOOT and bootloader says ***Security Warning**
Remove and re-insert the battery and go back into bootloader and holding Volume Down +power button select fastboot
11. Run RUU_Pyramid_***.exe to reflash stock rom. (the one u just downloaded in step 1) and then reboot. It should work now
The above method works successfully. So do not under any circumstances try this without going back to stock first using Ruu.exe. and Follow the instructions correctly if you want S-on WITHOUT problems Any doubts or questions PM me and i will get back to you and help you.
Donations welcome as i had a very shaky night experimenting and bricking my device (and having a panic attack over it) to find a safe method for successfully getting S-on back for all you out there complaining about warranty.
To Start Clockwork recovery
1. EITHER make sure fastboot is disabled in settings and shut down your phone
This can be done via Settings > Power> Untick "FAST BOOT" at the bottom.
OR take out your battery and put it back in. (this is easier)
2. Keep hold of the volume down button and switch your phone on.
3. Hboot will start. Navigate to recovery with the vol down button. Press power button to select and enter recovery.
To install a Custom ROM - you will not lose data or apps with this method!
1. Download your chosen ROM by other developers in the development threads and copy the ZIP file to your SD Card ROOT directory
2. Start clockworkmod recovery (instructions above)
3. BACKUP YOUR ROM USING CWM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ROOT! (skip this step if you have already made a backup previously)
4. Navigate to "install zip from sdcard" using the Volume Down button and press select (power button to select)
5. Then select "Choose zip from sdcard"
6. Then select "your_chosen_rom.zip"
7. Then select "Yes - install your_chosen_rom.zip" to confirm
8. Then go back
9. Then reboot.
10. First boot will take quite some time -This is normal, i know you want touch your nice shiny phone but BE PATIENT - ENJOY!
Special Thanks to AlphaRev, unrEVOked Team, Bin4ry & to everyone else that helped with this GUIDE and with S-off and Dazweeja with S-on
TroubleShooting!
signature verification failed in CLOCKWORK
Make sure you have installed Clockwork From Step 2 Above. V 4.0.1.4 specifically for AlphaRevX
1. Load up Clockwork Recovery (See post 1)
2. Navigate and Select "install Zip from SD Card"
3. Select "Toggle Signature Verification". Press it once or twice till you see the message. "Signature Check: DISABLED"
Installation aborted in Clockwork
E:Error in /sdcard/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip
(status 0)
Installation Aborted
1. First Try the above method of repeating it 3 times to achieve root. some users are getting installation aborted. but on third attempt rooted successfully
2. Failing that: Download su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip AND su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip.
3. Place both of them on the root (main folder) of your sd card and flash su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip using Step 3 from post 1. it is likely it may repeat the error above. INSTALLATION ABORTED
4. Flash su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip now using step 3 in post 1. YOU SHOULD BE NOW ROOTED!
Stuck on White Screen with Green HTC Letters for over 15 minutes or continuously rebooting without starting up
You are not bricked, Whatever you flashed in clockwork didn't flash correctly. Most likely a Rom
This could be due to a bad file, or download error or powering off or pulling the battery part way through. no need to worry
1. Re-download the Rom or file or theme you were trying to flash in clockwork
2. Install again using clockwork. wait till its finished and reboot. you should be cured
3. MAKE sure whatever you are flashing is compatible with the Sensation or made for the Sensation
Revolutionary Hanging on "Method 3"
1. Make sure you have installed all the drivers from above.
2. Please Make Sure you have HTC Sync uninstalled and Droid Explorer uninstalled.
3. Install These Drivers HERE:
4. Basically anything and everything that will allow your phone or other phones to automatically connect or sync to your computer has to be uninstalled
5. Try another Computer or Factory Reset your device as a last resort.
If you are getting root error messages
Some Users acheived root by repeating Step 3 a few times Try this
1. Repeat step 3 at least 3 times or until it installs completely .
2. Download busy box from the market , open it and install the app.
3. Reboot and that should do it , root should be working and WiFi with s off
4. You may get messages telling you it failed to root or installation aborted but reboot and check it with root checker. Many users are told its failed but are actually rooted now
If u want to verify if u have root download the app called root checker it checks for root and for busy box to b installed correctly... if that fails
Try Installing/REINSTALLING SuperUSER and Busybox (or busybox installer) from the market. if it still doesn't work then
Flash a custom Rom as they come Pre-Rooted
Many Tmous users are acheiving root while a few are not. please try all of the above mentioned methods.
Titanium Backup Crashing (when restoring backup)
1. Uninstall and reinstall Titanium backup
2. If that fails reinstall your ROM (Full wipe recommended in clockwork before reflashing rom. Unless you have already made a backup with titanium before. you will lose apps + data)
Titanium Backup not working
The likely Cause of this could there are some files left behind from your temp root. You need to delete the files in /data/bin/ you can do this by
Download Terminal Emulator from the market
open terminal emulator and type:
su
rm -r /data/bin/*
or if you are familiar with using adb: (you can use the adb exe supplied by revolutionary in his tools pack)
adb shell su
adb shell rm -r /data/bin/*
Then reboot into recovery and reapply the su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip installation. Another User posted this fix as it worked for them
WIFI PROBLEMS (ISOLATED INCIDENTs)
IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING WIFI ERROR.
Currently the only way to fix this is to flash Stock Rom again or Custom Rom.
1. Follow step 4 above in post 1
2. OR You can flash a custom Rom from Clockwork. LeeDroids Rom is close to Stock and confirmed to be working on a Tmous Sensation
Any problems or fixes PM me please
[GUIDE] TO UNLOCK YOUR SENSATION FREE - WORKING FOR EVERY SENSATION (noobproof)
Method 1 was discovered by a noob - Dav22. Dazweeja came up with a simple ADB command. Skygear for working it in Terminal Emulator
Method 2 was discovered by sieempi (Links at the bottom), STRING: NOT FOUND workaround found by jackmonter5
Big thanks to xplod4202. Risked his Sensation to see if Methd 2 was safe for us all.
And The simple guide : xl Viper lx : I am simply doing what i do best. getting you a noobproof guide and also simplifying the adb/terminal code
All of us will take credit for the collaborating and making of this thread to help everyone unlock with no cost. What???.....Yes thats right......We broke the FTSE index by providing free unlocks! lol
Also 9 people who voted no in the poll, ad voted before we found method 2 which unlocks every sensation
METHOD 1 - USE THIS FIRST
The SIM-Unlock code location for some sensation's (NOT ALL) has been found and confirmed to work for the few users who tested it. Use method 1 below to find your unlock code
(Method 1 ADB guide in post 2 if you don't want to use Terminal Emulator or you just want to use ADB)
Requirements:
-Rooted simlocked Sensation - Enable USB debugging in Settings > Application ->Development
-Terminal Emulator (Download free from the market) or click here to download and install into your phone
Your IMEI Number (Dial "*#06#" in phone keypad to get it)
GUIDE - Method 1
1. Download Terminal Emulator from the market if you havent already done so and Run it. This should bring you a blue screen. Full screen.
2. enter the command "SU".
3. Click allow when Super user pop up appears to give it root access. (If your keyboard disappears, keep hold of menu button to bring it back up)
4. enter the command "strings -n 8 /dev/block/mmcblk0p6"
5. This should give Output a bunch of numbers like in the screenshot! IF IT SAYS STRING: NOT FOUND MOVE TO POST 2 AND USE ADB!
6. The 8 digit number above your IMEI number is your unlock code. See post 2 on how to enter it.
IF it only brings you a date above your IMEI. Then the unlock code is not present in your device. Move to Method 2
GUIDE - Method 2 - USE IF METHOD 1 FAILED!
Revolutionary achieved radio S-OFF for Sensation (among other devices) which means you can practically do whatever you want with your phone (like actually owning it). This means it makes it vulnerable to all sorts of schemes including sim-unlock. The following method is quite efficient and easy to do and can be done with the need for a computer!
Requirements:
-Rooted simlocked Sensation!
-Clockwork Recovery or Revolutionary Recovery - NEEDED FOR NANDROID BACKUP
-Titanium Backup (Download from the market if you don't have it) - YOU ONLY NEED THIS IF YOU DONT WANT TO OR CAN'T NANDROID BACKUP
WARNING!!!
Backup all your settings/apps/sms/network/APN/Data etc.
Using this method to unlock will wipe your data and apps too! (Factory Resets in other words)
But it's this method that actually resets some other things including your sim-lock status.
Guide - Method 2
1. MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP USING RECOVERY - (Completely switch off your phone, Press Volume down + Power button to get into bootloader, Volume down to recovery then press power button to get into Recovery. Volume down to "Backup and Restore" in recovery. Press Power to backup and your done!
(Make a backup in Titanium backup if you don't want to or can't nandroid backup. Menu > BAtch >Backup systems data + Apps with data)
2. Download PG58DIAG for the Sensation HERE or FROM MULTIUPLOAD
3. Copy the PG58DIAG file into the Root folder of your SD card (The main Folder of your Memory Card)
4. Turn off your phone Fully and reboot into the Bootloader/HBOOT screen (see post 2 on how to get to bootloader screen)
5. Press Volume Down to Enter DIAG - Place the phone horizontally when it asks you too. (Flat)
6. Press power button to select "Clean S58 Data
7. Press power again to "clean S58 Data".
8. POW - your unlocked! Try a SIM card from a different provider!
9. Delete the file from your SD Card (Delete PG58DIAG) and REBOOT!!
Your phone Will set up for the first time, go through it all till you get to your home screen
10. Go back into recovery and restore nandroid backup. same method as step 1 above. but instead of backup, you use restore feature
(Use Titanium Backup to restore if you used it to backup instead of Nandroid backup)(Menu > Batch > Restore System Data + Apps with user data)
Now you’re free to go! Bear in mind, though, in certain circumstances you will lose your data connectivity or network signal. You’ll just need to check your APN, network type etc. and re-enter them; Just run the nandroid restore to get everything back
Thanks to Dav22. for discovery of method 1
Dazweeja for his simple Code to find the unlock
sieempi for Method 2.
Thanks to Team Revolutionary for PG58DIAG and S-off
Don't forget to CLICK THANKS, VOTE and RATE if this guide worked for you.
don't forget to thank the above users too by clicking the links

What is a noob?
A noob is someone new to XDA or new to the device and its methods of rooting/customizing. Its not bad being a noob. we we're all their at one stage. i was a noob for winmo in July 2009. I was a noob for Android in October 2010. you tend to learn everything pretty fast. easy to work with android is.
What is S-OFF?
S-OFF means that the NAND portion of the device is unlocked and can be written to. The default setting for HTC devices is S-ON (write protected), which means that neither can you access certain areas of the system nor can you guarantee a permanent root
Do i need Rooting?
An unrooted device is like logging onto the guest account of windows, you can do many things, just not everything
Think of Acquiring root as having Administrator Access on the device, so you can install/modify/fix/break anything you want.
What does clockwork Recovery do?
Clockwork allows you to flash Unofficial Roms and Themes via zip files on your SD card, also you can make backups of your current rom and wipe certain types of memory. (User data, system, boot, cache, dalvik cache)
What is flashing? (showing your bits off in public?) NO!
Flashing refers to Downloading themes or apps or Roms onto your SD Card and then installing them using clockwork or any other utility where the phones Operating System is modified

thanks a lot for the guide. i was confused about one thing. you say, "To get your Hboot Version, make sure fastboot is disabled". where exactly do we make sure that fastboot is disabled? is that a setting in android? i thought it had to do with recovery... thanks again!

. I don't even want a custom ROM. I just want to be rooted and run stock with rooted google play store apps. Am I there?
I just want to run rooted apps with no ROM flashing...oh god why...where is the guide to root and only root?
You'd think this http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1652398 would be where to go to do that, but evidently it's sending me down the road to custom ROM flashing. AGHGHGhjkdashbdas. Do not want.
Ok, so here's where I am, I have finished step 8:
1. Download Odin 1.85 .
2. Download(USE FIREFOX!) ClockworkMod TOUCH 5.5.0.4 OR TWRP 2.2.2.0, they are both named "recovery.tar.md5" and will be downloaded as "recovery.tar.md5", DO NOT CHANGE the filename or else it wont install.
3. Extract the contents of odin-185.zip to a folder.
4. Run Odin 1.85.exe from the folder you extracted it to.
5. Prepare Odin: Check "auto-reboot" and UNCHECK ALL OTHER OPTIONS. SEE COMPUTER SREEN PICS BELOW.
6. Only Click "PDA" and select the recovery.tar.md5 file you downloaded. SEE COMPUTER SREEN PICS BELOW.
7. How To Put your device into Download Mode: DO NOT TOUCH THE POWER BUTTON FOR THIS PROCEDURE. - download mode is NOT the same as recovery mode
a. Connect the USB cable to your PC, but NOT to your phone.
b. Remove the battery.
c. Reinsert the battery.
d. ATT PHONES - Press and keep down both Volume Up and Volume Down keys simultaneously.
ROGERS PHONES - Press and keep down only the Volume Down key.
DO NOT RELEASE THE VOLUME KEY(S) UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO IN STEP (f)
e. Insert the USB cable into your device. The phone will turn itself on when usb cable is inserted - DO NOT TOUCH THE POWER BUTTON.

9. UPDATING CWM OR TWRP:
Now you need to udate CWM, download and copy cwm6027touch_v14.4.6_skyrocket.zip file to your sdcard, boot into recovery and choose "INSTALL FROM SDCARD" from recovery, install the file and reboot back into recovery to see if it installed correctly.
sk8erwitskil's CWM thread is here HERE , check to see if above file is the latest or dl the "Flashable zip" CWM file from there.
If upgrading TWRP go here HERE and follow the dev's instructions on using goo app, or you can use the flashable TWRP 2.4.1.0 file HERE and copy that file to your sdcard, boot into recovery and pick "INSTALL" from recovery, install the file and reboot back into recovery to see if it installed correctly.
How to enter recovery read section #2 below.

I have completed everything through step 4. I completely do not understand what to do after that. So, like I'm a 40 year old soccer mom, can you explain what I'm supposed to do to fulfill step 5? Is it through the odin app on my pc? Is this completed on my phone? The link provided that ostensibly explains to noobs how to do this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1777970) doesn't adequately explain to me what I'm doing and where.
Help, please!

Assuming that you have successfully installed your custom recovery you then need to know which recovery you installed before you update it. If you used CWM you can get the updated version from the Skyrocket development thread. Put the updated CWM file on your SD card and flash that zip while in recovery. If you used TWRP you can update it through the app that it installed if it did install one. GooManager (someone correct me if I am wrong on the name) I think GooManager needs suoeruser privileges. So which recovery did you flash?

i think you should stay on stock, read more b4 you brick your phone, no sense in rooting/installing custom roms when you dont know how to install a file on your scard, im not putting you down but trying to give you friendly advice
Vincom has a point. I taught myself through these forums and Google how to do it back in October of 2011. I flashed many a ROM and many files since then until I bricked mine Thursday. Now I have to pay 60 dollars to get it fixed. But on the upside I now have a Note II to play with.
Edit: She is asking for help though and she did ask in the right thread. Some people need more help than others.

Oh. ****. I don't even want a custom ROM. I just want to be rooted and run stock with rooted google play store apps. Am I there?
I just want to run rooted apps with no ROM flashing...oh god why...where is the guide to root and only root?
You'd think this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398 would be where to go to do that, but evidently it's sending me down the road to custom ROM flashing.

For just rooting u have to run the superuser zip through your recovery
Oh and if you are not understanding what the stickies are saying to do then look it up on youtube because there are a lot of step by step instructions there.

a. put updated file in your micro sd card.... plug ur micro sd card to pc... drag file and drop it in your micro sd card. put the micro sd card back in phone.
b. to go to recovery press power button + vol+ + vol- all at once and hold.
why do u need to unlock play store app? playstore is accessible completely even without root. you can also sideload Amazon appstore and other apps without root. no need to get all bricked up just to run playstore. i'm confused what are you trying to do again?

im guessing he wants to run apps from play that require root, eg titanuim backup, but he doesnt know how to put a file on his sdcard, but then he has to learn how to install zips from recovery which someones got to teach him since he doesnt want to read/learn/search for the answers. he seems to be impatient and wants it done "now", its a brick waiting to happen, my advice to him was to slowdown and learn

agree and such bad attituted too. i wouldn't want to help anybody who cusses in every conversation geez little respect goes a long way
It you just want to root and not want to flash any custom ROMs or anything related to it,I will tell you how to from total beginning
ALL DATA WILL BE LOST , BACKUP EVERYTHING
In order to root Android 4.2 the following three requirements must be satisfied beforehand:
The Android SDK, which you can download from Google Developers
A custom recovery like ClockworkMod (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP)
SuperSU, which you can download from CF-Root
There are no major differences between the two, but TWRP is more touch-oriented thanks to larger buttons. CWM is also available in a touch-compatible variant, but it has much smaller buttons. It's a matter of personal preference between the two though, but you have to choose one.
Before starting the process I urge you to perform a backup, as all data might be lost afterwards. You can copy the contents of the SD card to a safe external location such as cloud storage service or computer hard drive.
The first step that needs to be performed after all the files are downloaded is to install the Android SDK. Afterwards open the Android SDK Manager and select the following two items:
Android SDK Platform-tools -- it contains the required programs to install Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
Google USB Driver -- it contains the necessary drivers for the Nexus device
Then you should create a folder in an easily accessible location within the command line. In this example I will use a folder named "Root" in my C:\ drive in Windows. The path name will therefore be: "C:\Root".
From the folder where Android SDK Platform-tools is installed (in my case it is "C:\Program Files x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools" copy the following files to the previously created "Root" folder:
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
fastboot.exe
The following files must also be copied to the "Root" folder:
CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip -- SuperSU file
The custom recovery that you previously downloaded for your specific device (please see below)
For my 8 GB nexus 7 wifi(codename "grouper" I will use TWRP with the name "openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-grouper.img".
You can easily find the codename for your devoice by looking into Google
The custom recovery file differs for each device, please make sure you download the correct file
In order to make the process smoother for instance the SuperSU file can be renamed to "root.zip" and the custom recovery to "customrecovery.zip". It's a matter of convenience, but for accuracy I will stick to the original naming for this guide.
If the previous steps are completed you must have the following six files in your "Root" folder:
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
fastboot.exe
CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip -- SuperSU file
The custom recovery. In my case it is "openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-grouper.img"
From there, you can proceed to install the drivers for "fastboot mode". To install them, follow these steps:
Power off your Nexus device.
Press and hold Volume Up and Volume Down then press and hold the Power button; the device will now enter "fastboot mode".
Go to Device Manager (Computer -> Properties -> Device Manager in Windows 7/8) and identify the device; for me it shows up as Android 1.0.
Right click Android 1.0 and select "Update Driver Software," then select "Browse my computer for driver software".
Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer," then click "Next".
From "Have Disk..." option go to the folder where you have Google USB Driver installed (for me it's "C:\Program Files .(x86)\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver" and select "android_winusb.inf".
Out of the three options select "Android ADB Interface" and validate any future warning window to install the driver.
Final preparations
Everything is prepared in order to start the installation process, but in order to do so a command window must be opened. Windows Key + R opens "Run"; type in "cmd" and the command window appears. Typing "cd C:\Root" and pressing Enter sets the "Root" folder as the working directory. Pressing the Shift key and right clicking inside the "Root" folder will also deliver the same result.
The device must be turned on in "fastboot mode" which I have explained at step no.2 during the driver installation process, and obviously plugged-in to the computer. You then have to type in the following commands while in "fastboot mode":
fastboot devices -- this is just for verification purposes; if there is no listed device then the drivers have been improperly installed and steps 1 through 7 must be redone.
fastboot oem unlock -> you have to accept the prompt in order to continue -- this command will unlock the bootloader, but it will also erase the data on the device which is why a backup is necessary.
fastboot reboot-bootloader -- this will reboot the bootloader.
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-grouper.img -- this will flash the custom recovery --please use the specific file and name for your particular Nexus device!
fastboot erase cache -- this will erase the cache -- might not be necessary but it's just as a precaution.
fastboot reboot -- this will reboot the device.
After Android 4.2 is loaded and running the SuperSU file must be copied from the "Root" folder to the internal storage (shows up in Windows Explorer as a Nexus device). A simple copy and paste will do the trick here.
Then you have to power off the Nexus device and enter "fastboot mode" again. Use the Volume Up and Volume Down keys to navigate until you can select "Recovery Mode". After the power button is pressed the device will reboot in the new custom recovery.
Rooting your Nexus device
If you have ClockworkMod installed, you have to perform the following steps:
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Select "choose zip from sdcard"
Select "0" (zero) folder
Select "CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip"
Select "Yes - Install CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip"
Select "Go Back"
Select "reboot system now"
If you have Team Win Recovery Project installed, you have to perform the following steps:
Press "Install".\
Select "CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip" -- for me it's in the "0" (zero) folder
Swipe to confirm flash
Press "Wipe cache/dalvik" (just as a precaution)
Swipe to wipe
Press "Reboot System"
After Android 4.2 loads your device can run apps with elevated privileges (meaning it's rooted). A SuperSU app is installed in order to allow root requests, so please use your judgement on which apps you grant access.
If you experiences any problem, please reply and I will look into it.

naman14, im not putting you down, your step by step howto is admirable, good work, but the problem is that the op is clueless on tech stuff, its not the word "flash" he has a problem with, i could of said "install" and it would lead to same conclusion, he doesnt know how to copy a file to his sdcard, if he cant do that he has no business in modding his phone until he learns more. anyhow the op is long gone by now
I upgraded my samsung skyrocket s2 version 2.3.6 to 4.0.4 through the Kies. Then I tried to install TWRP 2.2.0 and Odin 1.85. I saw COM 14 ; COM 17 when I hit start button .It said
FAILED. Now it showed a yellow triangle in the middle of phone & monitor pictures. ( including : Firmware upgrade encountered an issue . please select recovery mode in Kies & try again). Please help . Thank you very much.
I just tried other laptop . I saw COM 3 but it said it couldn't open the serial (COM )port . All thread completed (success 0/ failed 1)
I have a Nexus 5 32GB that's about 14 month old. Was running Lollipop 5.1 which was installed through OTA updates (4.44 >5.0 >5.01>5.1). The device is stock and unrooted.
One day, after powering the device up, it went into the boot screen and never managed to finsih the boot (for hours).
After reading extensively on this and other forums , here are the steps I tired , without success:
1. Go to bootloader and press Start
2.Go to bootloader , erase cache
3.Go to bootloader erase user data (factory reset).
I then tried to flash the factory image back. I tried all Lollipop versions from the google developers page of factory images.
starting with 5.1.0 (LMY47I) and going down. All flashing was completed successfully, but the problem remains.
Then I tried 4.4.4 (KTU84P) and the device finally booted up, but it was crippled: Most times It only sees a storage of 16GB , the phone does not recognize any cellular carriers, google play crashes, camera crashes, gallery crashes. An error states that "no external memory is available". Basically it was useless.
I took the phone to an LG lab. They said I need to replace the motherboard. Costs about 200$ !!
I was about to get a new phone , but decided to try one more google search for a fix.
This guide is for any poor soul in the same state.
This issue can be solved without replacing the motherboard for 200$.
The problem in my case was that the /persist partition was degraded, and could not mount.
I found out by trying to follow this guide: http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...dots-lollipop-screen-after-hard-factory-reset
I got as far as activating ADB Sideload when I got the error "cannot mount /persist".
This is a software problem.
Her's how to fix it (It's a long and detailed guide - but worth the result):
First, you must enable USB debugging mode , if it was not enabled (if it is enabled you can skip the first step of this guide) . The way to do that is to flash a stock image that will load, even if not fully working. In my case I could flash version 4.4x and get the phone to load. I am not aware of any other way to enable USB debugging, other than from within a working OS. If someone knows a way - please post it.
The easiest way I found to flash my phone is using Julian OS' script. You can download the stock image5.0 and 5.01 with the script from here:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=22367
You will need to adapt the 4.4x firmware to have the script flash it, but it's very easy, just a couple of files to rename.
When you open Julian's zip file you will see that he uses a script that flashes the firmware's images one by one. What I did was download the stock images from Google https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images , used winrar to extracrt all the files from the .tgz file to a folder, then unzip the only zip file there (image-hammerhead-xxxxx.zip) which contains 5 img files. I then renamed the radio-hammerhead-xxxxx.img to radio.img and bootloader-hammerhead-xxxx.img to bootloader.img. Now all the file names comply with Julian's script. From Julian's archive copy the files "From Bootloader.bat" and "fastboot.exe" to the folder where all the images you just renamed are.
Put the phone in bootloader mode (turn the phone off, press the Vol- and the power buttons). Once the the phone is in bootloader mode, connect it to the PC and run "From Bootloader.bat" and follow the onscreen instructions. In about 2 minutes, your phone will be flashed.
Turn the phone on, it should load the OS. Disregard all the error messages, and don't bother setting the phone up. If you skip wifi, and don't have a sim in the phone you can finish the basic setup quickly.
Next you need to get developer tools activated: Settings>about phone>Build number. Tap 7 times on the build number and this will unlock Developer tools. Go back to settings and the new Developer Tools and enable usb debugging. Approve any popups.
*** I am not aware of how to enable usb debugging if you cannot go into the settings. If non of the stock images loads for you, search for a way to get usb debugging working , or else you cannot continue. You need this for ADB to connect to the phone.****
Next, you need to have ADB on your PC, and it should be able to reach your phone. If you already have - then skip to the next step. If you don't - then here is how to get the latest version:
Go here and download the installer https://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html#Other
Install the file and when it's done run SDK manager. Choose only the first 2 tools (Android sdk tools and Platform tools), this will install the latest adb and fastboot tools. To make sure all is installed open a command prompt (Click Start, type cmd in the search and run cmd.exe) and type adb. You should see all the adb possible commands typed. Now you can test if your phone can be reached by adb: connect your phone (remember usb debugging must be on!) and type: adb devices. After a few seconds you should see something like this:
List of devices attached
024703f599cc8feb device
If you get this, it means you have usb debugging enabled and a proper usb driver installed and you can go to the next step . If there is no device in the list you need to install/update the USB driver:
You have to make sure that when you connect your phone with USB debugging on, you have 2 entries in Winodws Device manager:
Under Portable devices >Nexus 5 , and under Android device> Android composite ADB Interface.
If the second one is missing, ADB will not work and you can't continue. There are 2 ways to fix that :
1. You can install an Android driver called Universal Naked Driver 0.73 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2386956. Unzip the file to a folder.
The author of that guide states you need to uninstall any driver that already exists. This proved tricky because Windows would not uninstall the Nexus 5 driver. I decided to install it on a PC that has no android driver.
When you connect the phone to a windows 7 pc for the first time it will search for a driver. I disconnected the internet and windows installed a generic driver. In device manager I saw Nexus 5 with a yellow triangle. I Right clicked on it > update driver software > Browse my computer for driver software and point to the folder you unzipped the driver. You will get a warning - allow the installation.
2. If that does not work or if you don't have another "virgin" PC try this:
Run SDK Manager, under Extras mark Google USB driver. You don't need anything else marked. Install the driver.
Now connect your phone to the PC in normal mode (not bootloader!) . Open device manager. You should have two entries: Portable devices >Nexus 5 and Android device > Android Composite ADB Interface
If the second one is missing, but the Nexus 5 is properly installed, Right click on the Nexus 5 device >Update driver software > Browse my computer for driver software >Let me pick from a list. Now make sure that "Show compatible Hardware" is ticked . You should now have an entry called "USB composite device". Choose that and let it install. When it's done, if you still have an an Unknown device >Nexus 5 and no Android Composite ADB Interface in device manager, then unplug the phone and reconnect it again . You should now have both devices installed.
If by chance this does not work, and you have a Nexus 5 with a yellow error , right click it>update software driver> Browse my computer.> and point it to the Universal Naked Driver folder or the SDK>Extras>Google USB driver folder and it should update so both devices appear (Nexus 5 and ADB).
Once adb can see your pohne go here, to read bitdomo's guide to fix the broken persist partition.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/guide-to-fix-persist-partition-t2821576
There are some prerequisites to getting this to work:
The first one is that the phone can be reached by ADB, this is why you needed the usb debugging mode to be turned on, and the proper usb driver installed.
Second, you need to install a custom recovery image. Don't worry, you will overwrite it later. The one I used is TWRP. Get the latest version from here:
http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hammerhead
To install I recommend you copy Fastboot.exe and the TWRP file to an empty folder on your PC . Rename the TWRP file to "recovery.img". Open a command prompt in the folder (see here if you don't know how http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-open-windows-command-prompt-any-folder.htm) , in the black window type: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and hit Enter. Wait a few seconds and it will finish.
Last, you need to root your device. There are many ways to do this. I did this very simply by downloading CF-Auto-Root from https://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ The file you need is this: https://download.chainfire.eu/363/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-hammerhead-hammerhead-nexus5.zip . Unzip it, put your phone in bootloader, run root-windows.bat.
Now you are prepaired... Follow the guide by bitdomo . Open a command prompt , and run the 2 commands bitdomo wrote. You will get a series of questions , type y followed by Enter until it's all done.
SInce you are still in bootloader mode, and a big START is at the top of the screen, click the power button to reboot. Now your oS 4.4x should load properly. Make sure everything is working.
I did not follow the steps for the wifi and BT fix , because they worked fine (and still do 4 months later) , but you can go ahead and do that too.
Now you can flash to the latest firmware 5.10 - download the file from the developer site I gave before, use Jason Os's script to flash the image, and lock the device. Done! Boot up the device and make sure it recognizes the right amount of RAM on your phone (16 or 32GB). If it does, then all is well .
When I first booted the device , I saw that it only recognized 16GB instead of 32GB. To solve this install TWRP again, go to Wipe>Format data . Then reboot the device and make sure you have 32GB.
If you like the stock recovery instead of TWRP you can use Fastboot to flash the original recovery.img.
Now you have a working Nexus 5 , v5.10.
Thanks to LyricWulf and bitdomo for their life saving guides. I hope this helps others in the same spot, and saves them 200$ .

Not sure what your problem is, but if you are stuck at the boot screen (with the colored dots spinning) you might have the smae problem I describe. You can try to go to bootloader and wipe the cache, if that does not help and you don't mind a wiping all your data do a factory reset. , Go to recovery mode (third option in bootloader), then press the powr and vol up buttons together several times until you get into recovery. Then choose what you want to wipe.
If that does not restore your phone you need to follow my guide. Probably your persist partion is degraded and needs to be fixed. If you follow my guide you will find out what your problem is.
Good luck
Or just read the stickies.
I had the same problem, and for me, simple NAND restore from TWRP recovery solved this issue. I recently made this NAND backup for no reason and it happens to be a very good move. Cheers
Thank you so much for this! You saved my phone!

I had the same problem, and for me, simple NAND restore from TWRP recovery solved this issue. I recently made this NAND backup for no reason and it happens to be a very good move. Cheers

But for that you have had to install TWRP in the first place...
Mine was stock.
Where is the backup saved?
Mine was rooted + TWRP recovery and I saved my backup on flash drive with TWRP's backup option. I was able to boot into boot menu (pwr + vol-) and it would let me to enter into TWRP only. For me it was enough to initiate a restore process..

Did you just replace the button or did you have to replace something more?
Thanks
Just the button. You can DIY, it's easy.
worked
worked great. confusing in the start but got it working. Thanks for a life saving guide for nexus 5
incredible
Hi eross,
I registered and logged in just to say thank you for this amazing tutorial. I've been trying to repair my N5 for about 12 hours, and I was about to give up when I saw this post. You saved my Nexus!!
Thanks again. :victory::highfive::good:

Good luck

You can try to download the stock firmware that's installed on your phone and flash the recovery img, or flash twrp recovery.

This is a Nexus 5 32GB that's about 14 month old. Was running Lollipop 5.1 which was installed through OTA updates (4.44 >5.0 >5.01>5.1). The device is stock and unrooted.
Yesterday after powering the device up, it went into the boot screen and never managed to finsih the boot (for hours).
(can't post links yet...)
starting with 5.1.0 (LMY47I) and going down. All flashing was completed successfully, but the problem remains.
Then I tried 4.4.4 (KTU84P) and the device finally booted up, but it is crippled: Most times It only sees a storage of 16GB , the phone does not recognize any cellular carriers, google play crashes, camera crashes, gallery crashes. An error states that "no external memory is available". Basically it is useless.
I am wondering if it is a software or hardware problem. It appears as though part of the phone's memory is not functioning . Is there a way to check this? Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks
Edit: Just came back from an LG lab. Bad news. Need to replace the motherboard. Costs about 200$ !! Can't find anything cheaper on ebay. Guess it's time for a new phone
Edit #2 - SOLVED !!
OK, this for any poor soul in the same state. This issue can be solved without replacing the motherboard for 200$.
The problem in my case was that the /persist partition was degraded, and could not mount. Here is how I found it out, and how I fixed it:
First, try to flash a stock image that will load, even if not fully working. You will need this later. In my case I could flash version 4.4x and get the phone to load.
Turn the phone on, if you are lucky it will load the OS.
I am not aware of how to enable usb debugging if you cannot go into the settings. If non of the stock images loads for you, search for a way to get usb debugging working , or else you cannot continue. You need this for ADB to connect to the phone.
Once this is done , boot the phone into debugging mode.
Read the guide here http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...dots-lollipop-screen-after-hard-factory-reset
I got as far as activating ADB Sideload when I got the error "cannot mount /persist". I then understood what the problem was. If you get the same error - you are in luck!
Then go here, to learn how to fix the broken persist partition.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/guide-to-fix-persist-partition-t2821576
There are some prerequisites to getting this to work.
The first one is that the phone can be reached by ADB, this is why you needed the usb debugging mode.
Second, you need to install a custom recover image.
Third, you need to install an Android driver called Universal Naked Driver 0.73 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2386956. Unzip the file to a folder.
Since the author of that guide states you need to uninstall any driver that already exists, I decided to install it on a PC that has no android driver.
Last, you need to root your device. (I think this can also be done from within TWRP , but I am not sure how...) I did this very simply by downloading CF-Auto-Root from https://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ The file you need is this: https://download.chainfire.eu/363/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-hammerhead-hammerhead-nexus5.zip . Unzip it, put your phone in bootloader, run root-windows.bat.
Now you are prepaired... Follow the guide by bitdomo . Open a command prompt where adb.exe is located , and run the 2 commands bitdomo wrote. You will get a series of questions , type y followed by Enter until it's all done.
SInce you are still in bootloader mode, and a big START is at the top of the screen, click the power button to reboot. Now your oS 4.4x should load properly. Make sure everything is working.
Now you can flash to the latest firmware 5.10 - download the file from the developer site I gave before, use Jason Os's script to flash the image, and lock the device.
Addendum: According to bitdomo, installing a custom recovery like TWRP enables USB debugging by default even if the phone does not boot. I have not tried this myself, but this means you can foergo installing os 4.4x , and go straight to ADB and run the command that fixes the persist partition.
Go ahead and try it. It will save you a lot of time!

My N5 has exact problem as yours even same errors of camera and playstorw crashing when i loaded older android version.. now im positive your instructions will help me but im having some trouble with your steps i do not know how to type comnands with ADB .. im truly novice and dont want to damage the phone more could you simplify the steps or make a video please? Thank you
Sorry, I can't make it any simpler than that. I can't make a video now because my phone is fixed. Adb is very simple, it's like an old DOS window where you type the text. I would follow Bitdomo's advice and start by installing TWRP. This will get you USB debugging, and you can run ADB and follow his instructions to fix the persist partition.
Hello Everyone. This is my first post on XDA-Developers, and I want to share my experience on how I transferred my Huawei G750-U10 to Android 4.4.2. For the people not interested in my experience, and are only here for the explanation, scroll down to the tutorial part.
Story part (my experience)
First off, I did some research on how to root the phone, because you will need a rooted phone to install other firmware and custom ROMS. Rooting is essentially unlocking an account on your phone that has access to all the files and programs so that you can have more control over your phone (it is normally disabled for security reasons). Rooting the phone was easy. I used a program called RootGenius, which is just a 1 click-root program. Very handy and easy. After this, the hard part started.
Fyi, the only reason that I started this project is because I wanted to play Pokémon GO w/o buying a new device
From this step I did a full backup of my current ROM and NVRAM and wrote down my IMEI numbers (the G750 has 2 IMEI numbers because it has 2 SIM-Card slots). These numbers are unique for your phone and are used for calling and sending SMS messages. So make sure you write them down (in my phone they were also written down under the battery). The program I used to backup the NVRAM and the IMEI numbers is MTKDroidTools.
After this step, I tried unlocking my bootloader. But it was very stubborn (I was using the latest firmware from Huawei, B119) and I tried doing this with fastboot. Which failed every single time and gave a 0x7000 error when I tried to unlock the bootloader. But I have to say that my bootloader was acting weird from the start anyway. Whenever I used the command:
Code:
fastboot oem device-info
It always showed that the bootloader was unlocked, eventhough after I locked it using the command:
Code:
fastboot oem lock
Which is weird. So I will just include a tutorial on how to unlock the bootloader just in case yours works normal.
So, after realising that my bootloader was not working correctly, and I could not install any recovery mod like CWM or TWRP (or any custom ROM for that matter), I found out that I needed to flash to the chip directly. This was also a huge challange, since i've never done this before and I actually did not know what I was doing. I've changed ROMS on phones a couple of times before, but that always was with a unlocked bootloader and so via the "normal" recovery system way.
For this part, I used XDA user: jacktackles' post a lot. He had some handy information about flashing to the chipset immediately and on what files to use. Since my B119 firmware was locked, I first wanted firmware with an unlocked bootloader. So I flashed some Chinese G750 firmware, that changed my device from a G750-U10 to a G750-T00. The flashing process was not flawless at all, and was the part that took me the most time (10+ hours). This all because I forgot to untick 1 simple box... Oh well, I guess that is how it works (at least I got it to work ). So, after flashing this Chinese firmware, the hardest part was done. And I had access to TWRP Recovery. With this I installed the custom ROM that I wanted, and that is where my adventure ended.
So, to summarize: It is not easy, and not beginner friendly. That is why I wanted to make this post: To make it easier for you guys to do the same and get to catch YOUR Pokémon! (Or just to upgrade to 4.4.2). So let's now go to the tutorial part!
Tutorial part
I did this with a Windows 10 64-bit computer, although I would recommend using Windows 7. You will also need a usb-cable to connect your phone to your computer. Make sure that everytime you install a new ROM that you re-enable USB-debugging. You do this by going to your phone options > About Phone > Click "build number" 7 times > Go back to options > Developers options and tick the USB-Debugging tickbox.
Sorry for not uploading screenshots, but XDA prevents me from using any outside links because I'm a new user (so i'll try to be as precise as possible). This means that also any downloadable files should be retrieved from jacktackles' post (again big thanks to him!). His forum post can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/huawei-g750-u10-honor-3x-kitkat-4-4-2-t3038166.
So, go to his post and download the VCOM drivers, MKT Droid Tools, B113 4.2.2 base with unlocked bootloader, Root Genius, and this ROM from another XDA-Developer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62356379#post62356379 (Thanks a lot mate! Awesome upload). The Gaaps link is not needed with my method, and the last link is down. So you will need to get a replacement ROM for that. I used one from NeedRom. Just go to their site, and search for G750-U10 and download a ROM that you want (which is Android 4.4.2 of course). Or download another rom from any other site. The one I used is called: G750-U10 KitKat which was listed on the site on: 07/22/2015 11:35 pm. But you can also choose to download another ROM.
So to sum up, we got 3 ROMS:
1. The Chinese Firmware downgrade to B113
(FILENAME: G750-U10 V100R001C00B113CUSTC432D001_Firmware_Slovakia_Austria_Lithuania_Czech Republic_Latvia_Estonia_Greece_05021NHU)
2. The ROM from pavel22 to change the device to G750-T00
(FILENAME: G750-T00_mod8_265_FlashTool)
3. The ROM that we finally are after
(FILENAME: Huawei G750 U10 Kit Kat 4.9.16)
(In my case of course, not if you downloaded another "final" ROM)
Okay, so after all the files are downloaded and extracted (except for the 3rd ROM), we can start!
1. Rooting
This step is very simple and quick. Plug in your phone to your PC and open Root Genius. Click the big button and your phone should be rooted. If it gives an error, just try again and again until it works. After this restart your phone, and a new app "RootKing" should be installed. If not, the phone is not rooted.
2. MTK Droid Tools (backing up NVRam & IMEI)
Extract MTK Droid Tools from it's ZIP file, and place it in a folder. Now extract the VCOM drivers and install them. These drivers make MTK Droid Tools recognize your device. After installing the drivers, open up the .exe file from MTK and make sure it recognizes your device. If it does not, reboot your PC and try again. After your device is recognized, install the "adbd insecure" app on your device, from the playstore (or download it somewhere else if you do not want to pay). But trust me, it is worth the money. Once adbd is installed, tick both boxes on the app, so that we can connect to your phone with MTK. If done correctly, MTK Droid Tools should now be able to get full access to your device, and a green box will appear in the left bottom of the program.
Now, backup your NVRam and IMEI. You do this by clicking on the "IMEI/NVRAM" button, and clicking backup. To be safe and for ease of access, write down your IMEI's on a paper or notepad file. Now the real fun starts!
2.5 Unlocking the bootloader (you might not have to do this)
Only do this step if you get a BROM error with code 6045 when trying to flash any roms. Here is how you unlock the bootloader:
1. Install ADB drivers. I used a tool made by XDA user Snoop05 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48915118)
2. Connect your device to your pc
3. Open up a command promt from windows
4. type "adb" and check if it returns a big list of available commands (that you know for sure that adb is installed)
5. Type "fastboot" and check if it returns a big list, for the same reason
6. Now type "adb devices" and check if it gives your device, if not make sure you have correct usb drivers installed for the G750-U10, if not just install HiSuite from Huawei (It comes with the correct drivers), then disconnect your device and type "adb devices" again.
7. Now type "adb reboot-bootloader" and your phone will restart in fastboot mode.
8. Type "fastboot oem unlock" and follow the instructions on your phone screen (they are very small and hard to read).
3. Flashing the Chinese Firmware
In the Chinese firmware folder, there will be 4 sub-folders: SD_Upgrade, Update Tool, USB_DRV, USB_Upgrade.
0. Delete the SD_Upgrade folder (Not needed).
1. Go to USB_DRV and install the .exe file in the: "Driver For servers 2012-11-27" rar file.
2. After this open the Update Tool folder and extract files.
3. Open the flash_tool.exe file, which is used to flash the device (like the name suggests )
4. Once the program is open, click on the "scatter-loading" button. Search for the USB_Upgrade folder, and select the MT6592_Android_scatter.txt file.
5. Turn off your device, remove the battery, wait a few seconds and reinsert the battery back into the device. Do NOT turn on the device.
6. Make sure SP_Flash_Tool is set to "Download only" (can be set by the dropdown box)
7. Click the "Download" button, and connect your device to your PC.
8. Wait, and the progress bar will fill up. DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR DEVICE OR YOU COULD BRICK IT!
9. Success? Great! Restart the phone and progress to the next step!
10. Failure? Untick the Preloader partition and repeat from step 5. Still not working? Also untick USRDATA and try again.
4. Flashing the: "G750-U10 to G750-T00" Firmware
This will be almost the same as part 3.
Extract the "G750-T00_mod8_265_FlashTool" rar file, and:
3. Open the flash_tool.exe file, which is used to flash the device (like the name suggests )
4. Once the program is open, click on the "scatter-loading" button. Search for the USB_Upgrade folder, and select the MT6592_Android_scatter.txt file (make sure that you select the scatter file from the new rar file, and that you are not using the same one as before).
5. Restoring your NVRam and IMEI
You might need to root your device again, check if need be, by searching for an app called SuperSU or RootKing. If they are not present, root the device again with Root Genius.
You will need to re-install the "adbd" app on your new ROM. If there is no Play Store present, search for a Play Store APK on Google. Once, installed check the 2 tickboxes and re-open MTK Droid Tools.
Click on the "IMEI/NVRAM" button restore your backed-up NVRAM and retype you IMEI codes. Once the restores are done, restart the phone and check if you can call someone. If it works, good job! You can now progress to the very last step! If not, check if you entered the IMEI correct. You probably made a Typo.
6. Installing final ROM
Now that you have installed pavel22's ROM, you have access to a recovery system. So copy the whole 3rd zip file to the root folder of you device. Turn off your device, and turn it on again but this time while holding both volume buttons and the power button until TWRP opens. Click on install, search your zip file and swipe right. When it finishes, do a factory reset from TWRP and then reboot the system normally. You should now have a fully working G750-U10 with Android 4.4.2. Congratulations!
This was my tutorial and personal experience with converting my G750-U10 to Android 4.4.2. It has been a wild ride, and i've reached points that I wanted to throw my device against the wall. I'm now very happy with my (feeling like) new device. I can now finally catch 'em all and become the best PokéMaster ever!

Thank you for the tutorial. I know nothing about flashing.
However, I could follow the instruction until 4. Flashing the: "G750-U10 to G750-T00" Firmware.
The problem is that after I had clicked the "Download" button, and connected my device, the error popped up BROM ERROR : S_SECURITY_SECURE_USB_DL_IMAGE_SIGN_HEADER_NOT_FOUND (6045).
Could you please help? Thank you.

That error means that your bootloader must be locked. For me, it was acting weird. They way you want to (try) to unlock the bootloader is as follows:
If your bootloader is now unlocked, you should try to flash again. My phone gave an error at the step 9, but I still followed these 9 steps. So the error I got could also have been a visual programming error, or bug.
I hope this helps! Keep me up to date

Same error. I tried several times with "fastboot oem unlock" but it didn't work: err 0x7000. I could't find anything helpful on the internet.
The odd thing is when i typed "fastboot getinfo-bootloader" I got "(bootloader) unlocked".
I just wanted to be a pokemon trainer too

Alright, then skip step 3 and go to step 4. I might have screwed up the step orders (It's hard to remember in what order I did all the steps ) if that works, i'll change the OP. I'm dorry if thats the case.

Yes, flash the g750-t00 one, and then the rom that you want if that worked. I think that I might have skipped that whole firmware downgrage rom
Thank you for answering
I tried what you had told me to do, but when I typed "fastboot oem unlock", the phone told me to use Volume Up/Down button. I used "Volume Up" button to unlock bootloader but it failed - err 0x7000 same as Iroh96, I guess. So I typed "fastboot getinfo-bootloader"; however, I got "waiting for device" instead of "(bootloader) unlocked". Then, I tried step 4 but it was still an error 6045. I don't know what to do next.
Why is it so hard to be a pokemon trainer?
hi, i couldn't download the:
"Rooted with twrp recovery inbuild base rom"
because the link is not available.
is this really necessary?
if yes, can you give me another link to download it?
i wanna start follow the steps but first i need all the downloads
Inquiries
I already read and downloaded all files which included in jacktackles thread.. I even read the whole posts
My point of view is, im kinda a noob to root business and afraid to end up by destroying my device especially when I contacted an Egyptian -who had already converted his phone- and he didn't recommend to do this.. so please bare with me.
*first of all is the deal link for "Rooted with twrp recovery inbuild base rom" is this really necessary?
*2nd point is my phones build, its B116. Can I proceed converting my phone or it won't work?
Thanks in advance

I found this post from Pavel22

Good luck! I successfully converted my Huawei G750-U10 to G750-T00. Now, I'm on Kitkat 4.4.2. Thanks for this in-depth tutorial, btw. Was really a great help.

I can't download the KitKat rom from needrom.is there any other link?????
Hi mates! I'm stuck in the bootloader unlock step; it keeps showing the 0x7000 error and it doesn't let me flash anything with the SP Flash Tool (guess it's because of the 0x7000 error). I tried to follow the Pavel22 guide posted up there... i can flash the rework-secro succesfully, but i get the 4008 error when flashing the whole rom. Can someone help me? Thanks!!
Here is some info from my recovery menu

I have a stock AT&T Galaxy S7 G930a I think on Oreo. I broke the screen around April 2017 and haven't used it since then. I just repaired the screen but I cant remember my pattern unlock and I want avoid wiping/reset because I want the data on the phone. ADB Debugging is off, bootloader isnt unlocked, it's not rooted and it's on stock recovery. What are my options to get past the pattern unlock screen to recover data without wiping/reset?
Things I've tried
"Samsung Find My Phone" to unlock the screen and while my device is listed it cant connect to the phone.
"Where's my Android" - cant find the device most likely because I've updated my Google password since 2017 and I believe Google will log you out of any device using your old password.
Deleting gatekeeper/pattern/pin files through ADB shell wont work cause ADB Debugging is off
Dr. Fone PC Software - Galaxy S7 isnt listed as supported devices
If I have no option but to reset/wipe I'm willing to use file recovery software like EaseUs to recover my deleted phone data. I've used this software to recover data on a couple corrupted hard drives and it's a must have for me now. I dont know how well it works for phones and it requires root tho. Can this phone be rooted once I reset/wipe? If so, what are the steps I would need to take?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated
Is there another google account linked to the device? Looking at your current situation, you probably don't have any choice to wipe the device.
This specific model you mentioned (G930A) is a US model & has a Snapdragon processor. Meaning that, the bootloader is locked and cannot be unlocked to install a custom recovery with root.
You probably can use this, but it requires a data wipe, so not really useful..

Nope, but I found this thread that I replied to the OP. How would I know what bootloader I'm on? It's said you need to be on V4
[Easy_Root/Unroot][Any_Oreo/Nougat_Firmware_V4_Bootloaders][Tmp_Twrp_Recovery] | XDA Developers Forums (xda-developers.com)
I guess you can root and install custom recovery somewhat but they require wipe. My question is at step 9 of the instructions. Here are the instructions below with my question.
"Instructions
1. Download S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS.7z and your model and version you want from above
2. Unzip S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS.7z to S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS folder
3. Unzip the Model/Version file you downloaded and copy the files to the S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS folder and place them in the Odin folder
4. Prepare your phone for a data wipe
5. Reboot your phone to download mode and flash the AP_ROOT_G93*.tar in the Odin AP slot and reboot your phone to recovery
6. Once phone is in recovery run the Setup.exe in the S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS folder
7. Now in the cmd window make sure your device is connected and choose Option (1) Launch TWRP
8. Your phone should launch TWRP leave phone plugged in and command window open on computer
9. Now In Twrp choose wipe and choose format data. Type yes in the box when it ask "
Now right before step 9 wipe and format, while I have TWRP open can I install Aroma File Manager zip or send adb commands to delete gatekeeper, pin, pattern unlock files, then reboot so I can get past my phones unlock pattern? This is all I'm trying to accomplish. I just want to confirm before I process because I don't want to wipe my data. 'm trying to recover pictures and videos from this phone.

Don't install any aroma file manager, you can just plug your phone into your computer and then your data would be mounted onto your computer.
I hope everything goes well!
EDIT: You are on V4 or Binary 4 as noted in G930AUCU(4)CRE4 (the 4 meaning version 4 or binary 4)
