Personally I would say the Note 3, I am getting mine this weekend. If you really use your phone for videos and gaming and just overall alot of screen time and like big phones/screens, then get the Note 3. If you don't use your phone for other then maybe a few games or apps here and there and don't like big phones/screens get the Nexus 5. The Nexus 5 is a good phone, but all in all it isn't really a multimedia phone in my opinion. Though so might say otherwise.
The Nexus phones are really meant for developers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_Dev_Phone
it should come down to cost and potentially hand size.
The note 3 is slightly better, but significantly more expensive.
If cost is a factor or if you have girl hands, go N5. If cost isn't a factor and/or you have man hands, go note 3.

As a woman, I object to that.
Anything over 4" is too big to hold as a woman, so what does it matter if it is 5 or 5.7"? (Put that thing back in your pants lads, your phallus does not have a screen, let alone the ability to multitask.)
I wouldn't go back to a smaller phone if they paid me for it. No way.

Really now, a note 3 can be compared with a nexus 5? In which area except the fast software updates? I want to know also.

Nexus 5 is a lot cheaper, for the price it's hard to beat. Still though the Note 3 is a much better phone overall.

I think you probably posted in the wrong forum to get an honest opinion.
I've been contemplating this too. Price is a factor. I also like the clean look vs the mess of status bar icons. Although it looks like I can address that through themes etc. The biggest things for me is the bigger screen and battery. I may go back to a Nexus device sometime, but for now I decided on the Note 3

They do have the same processor.
No comparison, the Note has sd card and changeable battery. Those are absolutely essential for me so the nexus doesn't even bear consideration.

Agreed. Those were my factors plus the multi window capability.
I have a Note 3 even though I was going to get a Nexus to receive the updates sooner. When they released the Nexus 5 I feared I would regret buying the Note, but no. I love this device and I don't think Nexus 5 offers a lot more compared to this, and it doesn't have spen. But keep in mind I wanted a big phone to replace a tablet too, so if you want something smaller and don't nees the spen, Nexus is an excellent choice for the price.

Sure it's cheaper and that's why it lacks the 40% of the things that N3 has.
I repeat you cannot compare 2 devices that are in 2 different categories with the biggest different imo the pen. Only phones with pen can be compared. Academically speaking nexus is great device for its price really but honestly if you go for N3 and used to the pen abilities there is no going back. I haven't touched with fingers except some zoom in/out since day 1.

Absolutely but the op hasn't really been clear about what they want from a phone so I stated the only logical reason to choose the Nexus 5 - price.

Go Nexus if you don't care about its poor battery life. At least you will be free of this Knox and locked bootloaders crap. It's also way cheaper and you will have way more roms and customizations available.

Congratulations on your first post I was in the same situation, whether to wait for Nexus 5 (still own Nexus 4) or buy this beast. And as you said it, I never regreted it, absolutely beatifull peace of hardware. And surprisingly, love the amoled and its deep blacks. I am back on Samsung after years of HTC/Google phones. Still need to get used to S-Pen, barely ever using it, but the phone is excellent even without it.
Got a Nexus 5, loved it but had issues with my 3UK home signal box so got a Note 3. Personally I prefer the Nexus 5 as its much easier to handle. Nexus I can use with one hand but when I do the same with the Note 3 I feel like i'm going to drop it. Both are amazing phones but to me 5" is the sweet spot for the mobile phone screen size.

So.. you compare specs.. whats the point ?
What a terrible biased "review" of both devices.
* You buy a Samsung Note series device for the S-Pen first, and whatever they throw in including the kitchen sink is icing on the cake
* You buy the Note 3 for the expandable memory and the removable battery! In which case you can add on a 2nd oem battery or use a plethora of external higher capacity batteries that are available
* what about the triple mic's on the note 3? The adaptive sound dsp?
* How easy to not mention about multi-window use on the note 3, the killer slow motion with 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 speed adjustments, the browse while you stream video window ability with the stock video player, the adjustable AMOLED color profiles, bluetooth 4.0LE, advanced modes, the wifi-direct modes
* what about the screen writing which works amazingly well? The s-Pen command mode with scrapbook, screen write, and the pressure sensitive screen???!!
* Don't forget the sensors on the note 3: Accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer, temperature, humidity, gesture
* how good the camera really is and no camera focus lag like on a nexus 5
* even if you guys don't like touchwiz, a simple launcher can fix that. But the bulk of the phone is made even better by samsung, really.
* and best of all it works on Verizon's network. Supports simultaneous LTE data and CDMA voice.
The pros on the nexus 5:
* price <---
* OIS in camera but what's the point when the extremely laggy focusing is in play
* IPS screen with ultra pixel density; at least no worries like SAMOLED screen burn
Those are about the 3 pro's going for the nexus in my book. I don't want stock android for it does NOTHING! Samsung threw in all the whiz bang features and if you don't like the features turn them off. At least you have that feature to turn off vs. a stock android which has nothing! I find it interesting the so called hard core android user choose nexus because they choose to have stock everything on the phone no extras. But what is the point of owning a smartphone in which you don't have any fancy features? Why not just get a regular dumb phone and call it a day.
And the article states you rarely change batteries - what a joke - because when my battery gets near 30% which is about 1day to 1.5days/2days time, I just swap it out in less than 40 seconds with a fresh one waiting in the charger. I use a 64GB Samsung mSD card now to hold all the 4K videos and 60fps 1080p videos and also the mic on the note 3 is extremely good! You can even zoom in the mic!
You shouldn't even compare the note 3 to the nexus 5 because the note 3 really is a fantastic phablet. The nexus 5 is a good phone for the price but again, if you want stock android that does nothing, go for it!

If you have the money for the note 3, it is a no brainer.
But nexus devices are still amazing.

Had both - started with the Note 3,sold it for the nexus 5, sold the nexus 5...and there I am, back with a black Note 3
The nexus is a BEAUTY! I love the design, the handling, the screen...I love the speed, the back of the device, the simplicity.
BUT:
I just can't go with a SP on which i can't rely on in terms of battery life. Not a great step forward from the nexus 4 - i am more a heavy user. And folks : if i have to turn off Google now just to be able to get through the day, there is seriously sth wrong. I want to be "power independent" and that is simply impossible with the nexus. And still the camera is kind of bad.
No, the Note wins in all terms. (at least for me)

So absolutely worth it not just for the phone but for the Dev support that is backing it, my wife and I as well as a friend of mine all switched to the Nexus 5 and have not looked back!! you will not be disappointed!
And if you make the switch check out my ROM HERE
I switched from note 3 and previously had a note 2. Dev work is nice but you will miss battery and screen big time. After 2 weeks of using the phone you get accustomed to the screen size but battery life is not anything close to a note 2

I came from a Note 2 and definitely recommend the Nexus 5.
Screen:
The smaller screen takes some getting used to, everything seemed small at first but now I prefer the Nexus screen. The Nexus screen is crisper, brighter and more accurate color wise, no inkly OLED blacks though. The auto brightness on the Note 2 was too conservative and washed out in direct sunlight. The Nexus auto-brightness has a better range.
Battery:
About 20% shorter on the Nexus compared to the Note. I still easily last the full day with solid use, wifi, gps, bluetooth enabled. Wireless charging is very convenient
S-Pen:
I never used the S-pen much so I don't miss it. Although the S-pen was technically impressive, it was always held back by poor software implementation.
Speaker:
Lacking on the Nexus. The 4.4.2 update helped but I miss the Note 2's ear shattering speaker
Speed:
Holy crap, the Nexus is smooth like butter compared to the Note. The Note 2 was no lightweight but the Nexus is a quantum leap forward in speed.
OS:
Kit Kat doesn't take long to get used to. Better multitasking, no Samsung bloatware, fast updates. Nexus can't be beat. Google now is surprisingly awesome.
Misc:
Bluetooth and Wifi connect faster. The Nexus will feel incredibly light compared to the Note 2. Gorilla Glass 3 has higher scratch resistance than the Notes Gorilla Glass 2. Soft touch finish feels luxurious compared to the Note's slippery scratch prone poly-carbonate.
Thanks for the feedback everyone! Much appreciated

I love my Nexus 5 no real complaints with battery I was just wondering though if anyone here has had or have GS4 GPE? If so how smooth is the phone compared to the N5? Was thinking of trading this in for my GF GS4 and loading a GPE ROM onto it and either buying an extended battery or buying a few OEM batteries. Coming from the Note 2 maybe I am just spoiled. This is not a rant or anything I knew the battery was non replaceable and knew the battery was significantly less than than the N2. I am just assessing if buying a battery pack for the N5 or swapping this for a s4 would be best for me. I know this is subjective just wondering what each individual experience was/is.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The Gs4 battery isn't as good as you might think and the Gpe version is even less efficient.
The N5 battery is smaller, powers a faster SoC and gets longer battery life under equal testing conditions. None of the people I know with S4's can get my 6 hours SoT without even flashing anything, for example.

I had a GS4 with GPE 4.4.2 ROM loaded stock kernel. After rooting and installing a new ROM, my battery life is roughly the same on both phones. I just don't have an SD card anymore.
Thank you, the appeal I guess is that the battery is removable so I could use an extended battery or just swap them out on the fly

Are you saying gs4 ran better with touchwiz or that it's not as efficient as the nexus 5?
I don't mind touchwiz on the note but on the "S" series it's just bloat and a bunch of crap apps and features I don't use
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I had an S4 for six months and I ran GPE for most of that time. SOT is better on the N5 due to the fact that the amoled sucks up a lot of juice. With the same usage and apps I could squeeze about 5:15 on the s4 and 615 on the n5. Off screen battery was the same.
I was happy with both phones.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
When I ran my S4 with a GPE ROM it was quick, just not as quick as the Nexus 5. The S4 just seemed to lag more than the N5 does. The GPE is smoother than a regular S4 but by not that much. I ended up giving my S4 to my wife so I can get the N5. The N5 just feels quicker and smoother. I feel it has to be the graphics card.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
The N5 is faster and smoother than any other Android device I've ever used, and I've used a lot of them. As a former S4 user, the N5 blows it out of the water (even running the GPE rom on the S4).
Hello Brothers,
i am just confused choosing right Mobile for me, is Nexus is slow than s5? if we dont look at Snap 801. i am not camera user,

i dont like other models, i am just confused in btween Nexus 5 or S5 .
Thanks in Advance.

The S5 has a Wolfson WM5110 DAC, which is considered to be one of the best on the market, so if music is a priority then that might be something to consider. Nexus 5 still sounds good though, but pale in comparison to anything Wolfson equipped

The S5 looks to be the better phone on paper (and it should be for the price!), but I'd still take a Nexus 5 any day. In fact I was going to get a S5 after my Note 2, but it was just too big for me and I'm sick of all the Samsung gimmicks. Very happy with the Nexus 5 though
Might be worth your while checking them out in person, if there are any mobile phone shops local to you.
Im not sure why you think you'll get an answer to this question that is helpful.. Make your own mind up.
But yes, as mentioned Wolfson DAC is better than N5. Stick Viper4android on N5 though and the difference is negligible.
Regarding the Performance.
If you are comparing N5 vs Touchwiz S5...the performance would be much better on the Nexus 5.
If you are comparing with the GPE S5...well that will depend on the kernel.
I think the N5 with the Google AOSP kernel could perform a little better.
But who knows...both ROMs are so similar.
P.S.: I'm assuming there is an S5 GPE. I think I read something about it weeks ago...

Everyone here will say N5. Everyone in the S5 section will say S5. Lol
Research and weigh your needs, budget.... Etc..... no one here can know what you'll prefer.
S5's 801 processor is faster than the N5's 800, however the S5 will feel slower in normal usage due to Touchwiz.
You'll have to make up your own mind. But since u asked...Nexus5 ftw!

By specs galaxy s5 have to be faster, since it has the newer snapdragon 801 it is locked to a higher frequency than snapdragon 800 by default. Both has the same gpu, adreno 330. I know the gpu in nexus 5 is at 450 MHz. But MHz and newer hardware does not means that you will feel faster the galaxy s5 or the nexus 5 than the other device. The term "fast" can mean so many things. It could mean faster webbrowsing, boot up time, opening apps, doing tests with float numbers, camera shoots between pictures and etc. But speed does not rely on better hardware. Let's the android os is not well optimased on galaxy s5, or tne camera software, or the samsung browser, or the touchwiz framework. You would see the galaxy s5 slower than nexus 5, even if galaxy s5 has better hardware specs. In short, better hardware does not means that everything is faster.
In theory, if nexus 5 and galaxy s5 would have the most well optimased android os, drivers and softwares then galaxy s5 will be faster, but would you notice the fastness? No.
You said that you do not really care about tha camera. S5 has 13 MPixel camera and has no OIS, while N5 has a 8 Mpixel camera with OIS. Btw I think both devices makes really stunning photos.
I cant really speak about the sound quality on speaker, because I could not test in on S5, but I have heard that people are complaining about S5 speaker because it has a membrane which gives water restiance to the phone, but makes the sound more muffled compared to S4. Nexus 5 has just an ordenary speaker by sound quality. Since you listen to music I have to assume that you will use headphones more often instead of the speaker. I have to say that the sound quality through headphones on nexus 5 are impressing. I use a stock galaxy s4 mini headphones.
From music we get to storage.
Nexus 5 does not have sd card slots. It has 12 gb (16GB version) or 26 (?)(32 GB version), while galaxy s5 has sdcard slot supporting up to 128 GB sdcards. If you that kind of persone who stores all his/her music on the phone, then make chose 32Gb version of nexus5 or galaxy s5 with sdcard slot.
Move on to features.
Galaxy s5 has planty of features which nexus 5 does not have. Like fingure print scanner, multiwindow, pulse measure, air gestures and many others I could not remember.
Galaxy s5 has 2800 mAh battery while nexus 5 has 2300 mAh battery. I cant tell how long can a galaxy s5 survive a day with that extra 500mAh. For me my nexus 5 survives the whole day, from 8 am to evening 8 pm the goes between 20-30%. I normaly surfing on the web on 3G data and wathcing a few yt videos when there some Open wifi hotspots. Surfing the web on 3g or 2g are more power hungry than on wifi. I cant speak of LTE since my operator ask for extra money to allow me to connect to LTE network.
Battery usage depends what do you do on your phone and how well the OS is optimased.
Consider my following words about root and custom roms.
S5 has Knox, if you root or flash custom rom a warranty void flag will set from 0 to 1 which means you lost your warranty and samsung will not repair your phone under warranty even if your phone clearly have a hardware issue. That flag cannot be reseted when it gets changed.
About nexus 5. I am sure if you buy your n5 from any google playstore or from offical retails in EU you will not void your warranty even if you have root, custom android and unlocked bootloader. If you buy it from somewhere else I cant guarantee that your device will be fixed under warranty if you have custom android, root, and bl unlocked, but you can lock your bl anytime and reset that tamper flag anytime you want.
Bootloader can be unlocked easily on nexus 5 because it is meant to be like that, while for galaxy s5 samsung tries everything to make hard to unlock your bl.
About android update.
The reasone I chose nexus 5 is the fact that nexus devices are the firsts which gets an android update. it takes time for samsung to implement the new android os and port touchwiz to the newest android and if you bought your s5 from carrier then that can add some extra time for the upgrade because carriers have to implement their carrier apps to the newest android and etc. A carrier can also deny to upgrade their carrier devices to be updated. On the nexus side, carriers cannot add their apps or deny the update. There is no carrier variant nexus devices and allow them are sim unlocked.
Galaxy S5 has removeable back cover and battery while nexus 5 does not. Nexus 5 has support for wireless chagging while on s5 you have to buy the wireless charger backcover.
I dont really like the design of S5, the shiny fake chromed midframe, but I have to tell that it looks much better in real life than on pictures and the back cover has a nice soft material.
I like more the black nexus 5, it looks more serious and elegant for me, but this is my own opinion.
I advace you to try nexus 5 and galaxy s5 before you make your choice.

Coming from an iPhone 5S, I'm searching for an Android device, which is:
<= 5"
- fast enough
- good screen
- good camera
- good battery
- well built
The N5 is currently on top of my list - follwed by the Galaxy S4 i9506 (with Qualcomm 800) and dthe Galaxy S5.
Which one would you recommend? Or a totally different one?
Someone able to tell sth. about the battery from the N5 compared to an S4 or S5?

IMO you should consider the S5 OR Nexus 5. The S4 is getting a bit too old.
From friends who have similar phone usage (screen on time, etc.) The S5 battery last significantly longer compared to the Nexus 5. I usually get 2-3 Hrs of SOT(Screen on time) and the S5 of my friends are usually about 3-4 Hrs with ease.
The i9506 is comparable to the Nexus 5, as it has the same CPU / RAM / etc... so why not consider this one? It even has a slightly bigger battery and a better camera... but as I said...I really don't know if it makes the difference? My SOT is at about 2.5 hours currently.
Nexus 5 or... NEXUS 5!!!! But if the ~4 hours of screen on time bothers you then it is look for an other device.

Nothing more to say !
battery is just the same as iphone 5s and the camera of n5 is cooler while the camera of 5s is warmer. trust me, i've been comparing my sister's 5s and my n5
For the money either a Nexus 5 or OnePlus One. Wouldn't touch a Samsung after putting up with my S3 previously. Poor build quality, Touchwiz ground the phone to a halt and Samsung dropped support pretty quickly to move onto their next phone. Also custom roms were limited because of their restrictions with drivers (camera constantly crashed for me). Seems as though you're just paying for a lot of marketing.
The OnePlus One is just WAY too large
Nexus 5 battery is too small
