Rate the performance of STOCK 4.3 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Those who were able to successfully update to 4.3 via the OTA update, please comment on how it is. Describe the performance, fluidity, lag, ect...? How is your signal compared to MF3 with this update? Would love to hear these thoughts from users who have NOT modified the device in any way. Thanks

I have been flashing custom roms since e GS2 and I loved it. Never had to do a difficult root method, you just flashed Cwm and that was it. Now that Samsung is trying to prevent that with Knox and ATT locking the bootloaders, what's the point anymore? Far more devices will be bricked under locked bootloaders, versus unlocked bootloaders.
When I get my arctic blue i337 I think I'll just leave it stock and then I won't have to worry about warranty issues.

I had MJ9 and it made my S4 the best stock phone I've ever used. No lag using Apex and battery life was ridiculous. Even crossed the 6 hour screen on time mark. Was hesitant to update to MK2 but my OCD got the best of me last night. No difference that I notice from MJ9. My signal is lower with both but hasn't affected data speeds.

I did not see lag since MF3 update.. Now looks better. For signal and performance I will give 8.5-9 of 10

More bricked devices doesn't matter a damn to them in the short term. As long as they've already taken your money from the purchase.

Anyone else notice random vibrations? Not the usual phantom vibrations you think you feel in your pocket but actual random vibrations while it's just sitting or your're using it...

So the signal isn't as good as MF3? How is the headphone volume on the latest update? Does it go nice and loud? I have found the Note 3 does not have loud headphone volume.

Idk why but I turn all animations off, they turned themselves back on to 1x!

I was on MJ9 (got it early OTA before they halted) and got a 28Mb "mini" upgrade OTA to go to MK2. So far I see no issues, and it cleared up some of the bugs I had with MJ9, like security messages popping up whenever I toggled WIFI. Seems very smooth on nova. Maybe not that noticable vs MF3 which I thought was pretty smooth already, but this seems quicker imho. 9/10. I'm not sure but also it seems like the camera is autofocusing more quickly now at anything i point to before I press any buttons.
Headphone volume seems fine -- watched a video working out and no issues with volume. I didn't crank it all the way tho, so I don't know if it goes louder than before. No random vibrations. No bugs I've encountered. I'll report back if I notice anything else.

It sucks compared to 4.2.2. I'm noticing increased lag and other substantial errors / fails compared to 4.2.2. Side note, does anyone know of a root that doesn't involve an external Micro SD card?

Rooting by itself does not void the warranty. But, if you install a custom recovery and/or a custom ROM, you will change the binary counter which will technically void your warranty. You can unroot and re-install the stock firmware if you have a warranty issue. However, virtually no US cell carriers check the binary counter before accepting a warranty claim, and once they are sent to Samsung they're disassembled anyway. It's a risk you take, but honestly not a huge risk.

The battery life is no where near as good as 4.2.2, at least for me I charge my phone to 100% unplug it over night and after 8 hours it's at 88% that's ridiculous. Otherwise than that, it's way smoother.

(Q) lockup even after GB

Ok so even before GB my phone would lockup and forces me to do a restart just to get it working, and now even after the update that still happens. Am I the only one who is having that problem?
Mine is doing the same things but even more than before GB. It doesn't reboot randomly but it lags (in the browser and sometimes when using the keyboard - I use SwiftKey) and freezes a lot to the point of me having to remove the battery.
I'm new to Android but I think I'm ready to get a custom rom on this. Any advice?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
after the GB updates, mine is behaving not that different. It now restarts itself when i plug it in for charging and plug out from charging. Anyone having this kind of problem?
Tmobile tech team is now not doing the exchange any more, instead they are telling me to go to nearest store to investigate the problem.....looks like i'm stuck with this device......
with the GB update, the battery looks good. It does not drain out like it used to be before.
Yeah its really getting on my nerves. lastnight it locked up so much i just switched it off and went on my iphone. i might call customer care and get a replacement and see if that works better.
Any of you try and to a factory reset?
I've been running since the day of the release and the phone locked up only once while left on the dash and got extremely warm.
Every issue I've had has been fixed, the phone runs unbelievably well for me.
yea i factory reset and it still happens. only thing i cant complain on is improved battery life, but what good is that when my POS phone locks up lol.
The lockups are a hardware issue. It still exists even on different Kernels. Just request a replacement.

I've had lock ups before. Flash cwm and start trying some roms. I no longer have any problems and there are really some great roms out for this phone. Just make sure to wipe everything and backup each time to be safe. There's no reason not to try them, much of then are far better performance wise than stock.

No ROOT

Through the years, I've led myself to more issues with my phone by rooting it and customizing it to my hearts content. Recently, I decided to go back to stock. I'm pretty fed up with this phone, rooted or not. What I want to know is how I can get rid of busybox. I installed root checker to make sure the phone was factory stock, but busybox remains. Any answers? Only one I've found involves root access.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
This thread will get you bone stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111486
If it shows anything after that, then it either came on the phone, or it's picking up something on your SD card.
Hmmm, this is what I did originally. Why wasn't busybox removed? Couldn't be sd card, its been reformatted recently.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
Does anyone know why busybox is not being removed? I've odined the stock rom, going from ed1 to ee4 twice now. When I run root checker, it still says that "busybox has been installed correctly".
Edit: when I say going from ed1, I mean I odined that, then did the ota to ee4

IMO I don't think it matters honestly, they're not gonna run root checker at the factory... all they want to see is that it powers on and works and there's no physical damage, if they see something glaringly obvious like a custom rom or the superuser app then yeah they'll ding you for it
as for removing it without root I wouldn't know, if you knew how to compile/recompile rom packages you could remove it from the Odin package then flash it.. also it's in the market, maybe try uninstalling it from there or under 'all' applications tab in applications settings

Charge vs. Thunderbolt

Don't know if anyone's interested, but here I go:
Bought a Thunderbolt back in April and have had it replaced 7 or 8 times for various reasons. Each replacement, I've also had intermittent issues sending email from my POP3 account.
I demanded a Rezound, but they only gave me a Charge. Here's the comparison:
Speed: Charge wins EASILY. I expect at least 20 on the charge and hope for at least 10 on the Thunderbolt.
Weight: Charge is MUCH lighter. I like that.
Display: Charge wins easily. AMOLED is fantastic.
Screen: Charge. I love the way the screen feels. Much smoother than the Thunderbolt at times.
EVERYTHING ELSE: Thunderbolt. It's "quicker" overall, more responsive, GPS locks in within seconds (Charge took about 5 minutes), phone pad is more user-friendly and didn't require as much reaching from the thumbs, Thunderbolt NEVER freezes (Charge did), no longer randomly reboots (Charge did), camera sends portrait pics right-side-up (Charge doesn't), and I'm sure I'm forgetting something.
I should point out that because of its positives, I really wanted the Charge to work for me. It was a VERY hot chick. But it was not a wise choice. So for functionality, I'm sticking with the Thunderbolt. Just gonna deal with it not sending mail intermittently.

Just put Tweakstock on with the V6 Supercharger and Voodoo Screen Tuning. You won't go back to the TB and its ****ty battery life. Plus, with Imnuts' new PBJ kernel we can finally overclock and undervolt for maximum performance and battery life. Loving this phone again :]
Tweakstock? V6? Voodoo? I assume all of that requires rooting, right? Sorry. I'm too chicken to root.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
Rooting is the only way to go for the best possible experience.
I had a Thunderbolt, Revolution, and Charge so I have experienced all of them and will have to give it to the Charge as the best overall.
Thunderbolt was the only Android phone I had fail on me after 3 months of use. It also is considered a dud, with countless complaints from reboots, to radio issues, and so on.
It has a worse GPU/processor
Hardware buttons are TERRIBLE. They are mushy and flush, which doesn't sound like a big deal, but to me it's very annoying every time I use the phone
No hot-swappable SIM/SD
Less battery capacity 1400 vs 1600 and also by far the worst battery life of the three.
Hardware keys>capacitive keys
Thunderbolt does feel better in hand and I like the design.. I also am envious at the development/ROMs the Thunderbolt has, such as MIUI...
the only thing I'm jealous of the Thunderbolt for is the notification LED... I like everything else on the Charge (except the damn data drop which still happens occasionally for me ), and am content with the amount of dev work we have though admittedly little

Yes, if you root and download "FasterFix" your GPS will be much better. Although, it doesn't work for some people so you might need to edit a file in your /system. Either way your GPS will be much better. Rooting is insanely easy, you plug your phone into the computer, run a program, reboot, install a file and bam, you're rooted. Just check out some of the guides in Development. Also, don't feel chicken to root, we have the files needed to completely fix a bricked phone(unless you happen to brick it while messing with Voodoo Lagfix, which with our current ROM/kernel choices is almost impossible, and even then it can be fixed 99% of the time).

Install Imnuts' new PBJ kernel(its posted on Rootz) in CWM, then install Voltage Control and mess with your voltages/CPU clocks to your hearts content, although I warn you, never go over 1.4GHz or you run the risk of frying your CPU since anything over 1.4 heavily overvolts which is a very big no-no.
That's helpful...thanks for the advice. I've never rooted before, but that's quelled some of my concerns. I should mention that I'm getting some INSANE download speeds here in Kansas City...usually north of 23 and up to 49. It's great. I'm having issues with losing data connectivity (altogether) which requires a reboot. Other than that, I think my phone is getting used to me and adjusting accordingly.

I lose 3G data for days and I am on my 3rd phone. The last replacement lasted 2 hours before the data dropped for 10 hours.
It's weird, I think some Charges have data issues possibly due to quality control the either the 3G or 4G basebands or both, whereas other Charges don't have issues.
I can personally attest to having a reliable charge, although I rarely go to a 4G area.
I live in a solid 4G area but still the data droppage on mine is horrendous, problem is that its not reproducible in store because of their signal boosters so no go on a replacement (I don't like dealing with the reps on the phone either, most don't know what they're doing and I don't wanna call 50 times just to get a good one lol)
I'm saving up for a Nexus or I might wait for the next HTC superphone, either way I like my Charge a lot but the data issue on mine is a deal breaker otherwise I'd stick with it till my upgrade

Unfortunately I heard that it's not just a Charge issue, but a Samsung issue. Just from reading online articles it seems that the Nexus has the same issue. At lease it did with 4.0.2. I dunno about 4.0.3.
It is a Sammy issue. A lot of people came from the fascinate to the charge for just that issue.
We had 2 fascinates in the house bought at the same time. Mine dropped once in awhile the other was solid. I got the charge as a replacement and it has been very solid. My wife has a stratosphere and she loses data once in awhile but a quick airplane toggle restores it. It is a weird issue and must be in quality control, though the fascinates issue was resolved with a software patch eventually

Random Signal Drops?

I get random signal drops on the stock T-Mobile 2.3.4 rom. I have updated to the March Baseband using the LG updater tool. I just got this phone 2 days ago and I was wondering if there are any fixes for this?
Sometimes I jump from 4g > 2g.
Sometimes I jump from 4 bars > No signal.
These both happen even if I'm not moving.

See if you can bring yourself back to the July baseband. You may have to go without 2.3.4, but you could get yourself a better functioning phone instead. Lol.
Once on that, maybe try a stock 2.3.3, OR a custom rom.
I'd suggest flashing cwm and trying qwes 2.3.4 .. then use titanium backup to freeze the bloat or remove it. Prolly wont help, but its worth a shot before downgrading the BB.
I had hella issues with 2.3.3 which led me to xboarders modified stock without bloat and most of my issues went away...
Then I went to cm7 and had no issues at all. (Unfortunately the new bb doesn't work with cm yet)

The only time I have had that issue was with arcee's selfkangs of ics/CM9. But once I switched to aokp, I didn't have any issues with signal dropping.
This phone was a **** show for T-Mobile and LG. To be honest with you, the phone functions way better with custom roms. Cm7 with faux kernel (stock voltage) and I didn't have an issue.
The quality control on these phones was prolly crap. You may have to play the mix and match game with roms and kernels.

Try Hellfire Phoenix.
I know you said you don't want to do custom ROMs, and I'm guessing you'd rather avoid rooting (since you said it wasn't currently rooted), but honestly...you're not going to have a good experience w/your G2X unless you do.
I bought my G2X, when they first came out, and haven't been happy with any of the Tmo/LG updates/releases. Including the 2.3.4. I have noticed better GPS lock w/the 2.3.4 release, but I'm also getting random signal drops, and having issues with wifi calling...even on kwes ROM. (I should mention that kwes 2.3.4 is far more stable than the LG release)
The best experience I had, was with WeaponG2X (2.3.3/July bb). It was stable as hell, and had lots of nice extras. I may end up going back to that. However, I have also noticed, through my years w/Tmo, that I will get signal drops off and on for awhile, then they stop. So, it could be that Tmo is messing with their towers or equipment, and it's not actually our phones. If my issues persist, I may give up the better GPS lock, and go back to Weapon & the older bb. For now, I'm going to wait it out a bit.
Good luck w/your G2X.

Well, I really don't want to flash any custom roms unless it's ICS. I have AOKP on my Hp Touchpad and I love it; however, on all ICS builds the camera isn't working (namely AOKP, which is the rom of my choice). Since the camera isn't working on CM9/ICS builds I won't flash them since I use the camera regularly.
Now about CWM, I just flashed using NVFlash the experimental touchscreen version and I rooted my phone using SuperOneClick. I'm now in the process of removing tmobile bloatware (ex. WIFI Calling, Mobile apps, etc).
Anyway, I'll report back with the results.

What's your battery life like on AOKP?

Don't think so.
Does this happen while on wifi?
Does it actually prevent you from using the phone.?

Yes this does happen to me on WIFI, the service drops out and I'll miss important phone calls. It does not however prevent me from using the phone
What bloatware can I uninstall without any worries, so far I've only froze them all.

I just got this phone.. I'm not made of money.
The July baseband did the samething as well. That's why I even upgraded the baseband, to see if it'll fix the issue. I'll root and remove the bloatware myself. I don't want to install a custom rom yet.. Is this an issue with all G2Xs?

Can you try this?

Post your results. In my experience this is as clean a phone can get.

I leave for work about 130 and when I get off at 11 I would have about 60 to 65% battery left. On breaks and lunch I use the piss outta the phone.
With 2.3.3 I would get about 7 hours and it would die..
With 2.3.4 I have about 50% left at the end of work.
I can't wait till the new baseband is compadible with aokp, I've got really high expections for the battery life.
With cm9 kangs (i hate to even call aokp a kang, but it is in the name) the free app videocam illusion ( I think that's the name) allows video recording but the quality isn't best, but it works. The native camera apps will take pics, but forces closes on video.
Id run aokp see how that does. Then if its all good, try fauxs kernals. Keep in mind before flashing a kernal, backup ur rom. Just in case fauxs kernal has issue.. ( I can run faux kernals with stock voltage, when I do the undervolt, I have issues... some phones can handle it, others can't).
Hope my rambling helps.

Deleting bloatware on stock kernal didn't help, so I switched to AOKP. So now I'm testing that out to see if I still get the random signal drops. If a custom rom doesn't help I'm going to try a new SIM card, maybe the one I'm using sucks.

You convinced me, I gave in to AOKP. And it's freaking awesome, on par with my hp touchpad. I don't care about video recording, I just really wanted to keep the awesome pictures this phone takes and I did.
What's the benefit of fauxs kernal?

From my experience, faux kernals make the phone a bit quicker. Also with his kernals, when my phones asleep, (screen off) battery life is majorly improved.

[Q] Random Reboots

I've been dealing with random reboots now for a long time. With all this "stable" talk for JB roms I'm starting to wonder if it is just my phone.
I have ran many roms:
Slim Bean
All paranoid aspects of JB
CM10
sky JB
brickbeatz
Every single one the same. Multiple reboots or SOD's everyday at least 2 or 3. And if I'm using the phone extensively this amount could double maybe even triple. Is this normal? Is this something that other people are experiencing?
I have followed all install instructions including changing recoveries if requested by the install (big fan of TWRP but a lot of roms swear by sk8t's CWM)
I have odin'd back to uclf6 took the ota - formatted internal and external SD and is still happening no matter what rom I use.
When I was on ICS for a little I dig get a notification from time to time saying something to the extent of "battery disconnected" or "battery temp too high" and this is what made me start thinking that maybe this is a phone issue.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? This is my second Skyrocket. First was replaced by warranty because it started just rebooting consistently (may have been a stuck button, but I didn't worry about it).
Any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated. I do search, and I have tried pretty much everything I have found. Now I'm just frustrated looking for help.
Reboots are not normal with any of the roms you've tried. I've tried a number of roms and haven't experienced any reboots. Sounds like a hardware issue, but others may have different advice.

I've had 2 soft reboots since reinstalling Slim 3.1 (from stock ICS), but that's it. Some ROMs I've tried in the past seemed to have them more often than others, but I haven't been able to nail down exactly why that happens.
Most of them these days are fairly solid and shouldn't be rebooting, especially not as often as you are experiencing. Have you installed a custom kernel? Are you OC/UV? Do you have BBS installed to see if something is preventing deep sleep?

Two soft reboots are not bad, but the amount that I have had is way moer than that. I know that some roms are going to be different than others thats why I tried multiple to see.
I don't have better battery stats installed because battery loss isn't really my issue. I have decent battery life (other than the fact that the SOD's and reboots seem to kill 7-10 percent every time they happen. I also never oc/uv always leave stock..
Would BBS tell me what is causing the reboots?
Thanks for both of your inputs.
You had some high battery temp issues. Is your device still running hot? That would cause a reboot. Liquidzoo, you had hot battery issue, could this be similar to what you where experiencing?

The high battery temp issues came about right after I odin'd, but that was telling me these things in which I'm not sure that CM10 has a pop up for notification on these things.
It doesn't but how does the device feel? Does it feel hot. If it gets too hot the phone will shut itself down and reboot

Yes the device feels abnormally hot all the time
That's most likely why it's rebooting. Now all we have to do is figure out why it's hot. Liquid zoo had similar issues and I think he brought it all the way back to stock to remove some wake locks.
Liquidzoo , any thoughts?

My guess is the temperature is causing the reboots.
Install Better Battery Stats and look at the CPU States. It could very well be that something is preventing deep sleep, which in turn would cause heat and heat would cause shutdown.

I experienced the same thing with my SR. I called up AT&T customer care and told them that this was unacceptable. After a while they sent me a new SGS III. It is most commonly a HW issue, which is what I was experiencing. I explained that to them, and that is what lead them to send me the GS III
Cool deal, pun intended

The problem is I work in the call center atmosphere and I just can't bring myself to call in and be an asshole. It is unacceptable and I definitely should call them to talk to them about it, but I doubt I will get as far as you. I will also post some BBS dump after it has time to gather some information.
Thank you again for all your feedback
I took out my 32 GB SD card and haven't had a reboot or SOD since. I'm wondering if maybe this was part of the issue. Is it possible that it could be part of the issue?

Man, that's weird. No idea why that would make a difference. Was there anything on the card that could have caused the problem?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I957 using xda app-developers app
It's possible that the card had something to do with it, especially if it had errors or corruption.

After I pulled from the charger this morning I got 3 reboots/sods. Put my card back in and haven't had anymore since then. Which means the card has nothing to do with the situation. Still at a loss. Hmph.
