I've been noticing a weird shift in percentages of usage on my battery. Before a few days ago, display would take up a good 70+% of the battery. Now, I seem to be seeing a 40%-ish usage from Android System. My girlfriend and I have the same phone, we both unplugged at the same time and within 2 hours, hers only had about 4 minutes of CPU usage from Android System while mine had a whopping 1 hour.
I can't figure out what the problem is or what's causing this.. Anyone able to shed some light on this for me?
I noticed that Android System is using the second most battery after the display for me too. Hadn't noticed this at all until today. Are you rooted?

I am not.
It just doesn't make any sense to me because my girlfriend and I were in the same spot for those two hours; nothing should have been different.
Yeah that is weird. Anyone else that can shed some light on this?

Sounds like a rogue process. Reset and see what happens.
You may want to use an app like Quick System Info Pro (or something else, can anyone suggest one?) and capture logs of that process. That might shed some light on whats going on.
I had that problem, and then through elimination figured out that if I had a clockweather widget on the home screen, it caused some issues. I dunno why.
a number of things are always going to be using the battery. if the display isn't the biggest battery user and the android system is than it simply means that a number of background processes have been consuming your battery while your display has been off. how is or was your battery level compared to your girlfriend's phone? perhaps you have more things that are sync'ing in the background than your girlfriend. anyway, unless you're seeing an unusually high drain in your battery than I wouldn't worry about it.
Well, I powered off/on the phone and it doesn't seem to be doing it anymore. I would love to find an app that could help me pinpoint this next time so I don't have to power down my phone just to fix it. I have aLogcat installed but I can only see the past two minutes of logs because it goes by so fast.

Yeah, the problem is how much battery it was draining. Within the 2 hours it was unplugged, I lost 54%; she only lost 29%.
Ive had this same problem with Android System going crazy. I have no idea what causes it. A reboot fixes it, but it's pretty annoying.
Yup. I've seen this too.
I'm gonna guess you guys were on 4G? I've read this exact thing happening to a few people, and they've all been on 4G. It's happened to me three times -- all on 4G. I keep my phone on 3G at work because the signal is terrible and WiFi at home and haven't seen this issue in those circumstances. Some kind of 4G radio issue, most likely.
I read in another thread Verizon is aware of the problem (or so somebody was told on a support call about it), so hopefully it'll get fixed in an OTA update.
not dead black screen problem just battery issue usually in battery usage android os shows normally like this(image)
but sometimes it is 60 to 70 % and that battery drain too fast
is it a firmware issue ? or hardware ? my phone is 2 week old
this thing happen to me 2 time only
it happen to my phone at night on standby mode
and what all other aps( in the image) which is showing in battery usage it is all close(from task manager) but it shows it is using battery.
The battery usage being shown is the overall battery juice used by the apps listed since the phone is switched on.
Its basically shows the history of your battery usage and which app/system components have used how much % of your battery.
There's nothing wrong in that, its not a problem as you are assuming it to be and the apps shown there are not necessarily open.
ok thanks
i'll post in future if this problem come again
now android os usage is rising 40 + is it ok ?
Just enjoy the phone bro. Anyways u wont get more than 1~1.5 days ona a single charge except idealized conditions
I received my Galaxy this Thursday and didn't restart it at all until it drained itself yesterday in 14 hours.
After charing my phone to 100% and using it very very little during the day, it had drained itself completely after 14 hours. See the attached screen shots.
Android OS used 75% of my battery. It was completely useless.
Today after charging to 100% during the night it has been running fine. Currently at 68% after 9 hours with average use.
I've seen another thread about Android OS draining battery for SGS2, but I'm not sure there is a conclusion as to what processes causes it.
I suggest a restart if the battery starts draining too fast.
It's always like that with new smartphones. When I bought mine, battery time was just horrible - not even one day of ordinary usage. After few charging cycles (let's say after approx. 2 weeks) it got much much better. Now 2 days is not a problem at all.
Dont know how its works on custom roms/kernels but on stock 2.3.4 battery going down much faster with sd card on. If I put off sd card, battery life is extended. How no idea why.
lol i don't have any sd card yet but this problem occurs sometimes only
restarting works sometimes not every time i checked it
now what i found battery backup and drainage is ok in android phones wait for ICS 4.0.3(officially) lets see if they fix that battery bug. this thing should be solved in galaxy R.

Dude did you turn off Background auto sync ?
Your display usage is 2%, so it seems your phone was not used much by you. I feel you have turned on too many system background apps or something like that.
Do check that & update here if it solves the problem.

ya i close every application and clear ram eachtime before pressing the power button for stand by later i'll post image if this problem come again
I had this problem on stock rom.
I googled around and it seems that Samsung OS has some bug where after switching the wifi off, it still keeps consuming CPU resources.
Try flashing a custom ROM.
I haven't had this problem since the day I shifted to InfectedROM+ardatdat's kernel.

So I recently cracked the screen of my Nexus 5, ended up asking the official LG repairer in Australia to replace the battery with a new genuine one as I thought this was the perfect opportunity.
When I received the phone back I had the 6.0 update waiting for me, did it straight away and I was getting amazing battery life. Over 4 hours of SOT. I was thinking this was a combination of a new battery and Doze.
Anyway, since then my battery life has been terrible. "Android System" just chews up so much battery and my phone is really hot all the time from it. It almost always is using more battery than the screen.
I thought maybe a factory reset would work but it hasn't. I've unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone and I'm not running BBS. I was wondering if someone could take a look to try and help me figure out what's causing it. How can I go from such fantastic battery life to this in the space of a few days?
Here are some screenshots of how much Android System consumes my battery when I've not long taken it off charge. The phone gets really hot when this happens.
Also here are 2 BBS dumps. As you can see, in one, I get 4 hours of SOT and the Android System wasn't eating battery like it was this time. I don't know what's causing it. Turning Google Now off, location off, WiFi scanning off, 2.4GHz only and mobile data off hasn't changed anything. As you can see 'com.android.phone' seems to be using a lot of battery under Process in BBS. Could this have something to do with it? When 'Android System' wasn't eating battery and I was getting over 4 hours of SOT you can see I was listening to podcasts and using my phone a lot and it was fine. I'm hardly using my phone when 'Android System' is draining battery so I've got no idea why this is happening.

Can anyone see what could be causing this? I've got no idea and it's seriously annoying me now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Well the first days i updated to 6.0 i had a similar issue with wifi. A couple of days later and now its exactly the same as yours. I have no clue about what's going on.

I wiped the cache partition from recovery when this was happening and turned mobile data off, 'Android System' then stopped draining battery. I think there is an issue with the radio, like the radio active bug in Lollipop. When the drain is there, turning off mobile data doesn't seem to make it go away on its own, the phone it seems needs to be rebooted. Any time the drain is happening, it's once again 'com.android.phone' in processes of BBS that seems to be doing the damage.
Edit: Okay, it still happens with mobile data off. I've got no idea what's causing it.
It seems to happen more when I use Hangouts and specifically send and receive text messages. In one conversation I have about 70,000 SMSes. Could this cause it?
My phone had been off the charger for 6 hours and I hadn't touched it. Looked and the battery was at 25%. And it was warm. Looked at the battery consumption and "Media Server" had used 75% of the power. I can't disable it there, and I can't even find it in Apps to try and disable it there. Google hasn't helped either.
Has anyone else seen this? Nougat and this is the first time I've seen the problem, but I've only had the phone for a few weeks, and Nougat for a few days.
What version of the device do you have? What OS/FW are you running?
If you use memory card, remove it or format it through the phone.

I have the same issue. I lost in 3 hours about 30-40% and dont use the Phone really. I had this problem since 2-3 days. Mediaserver is always at the first place with a big difference to the second place in the battery consumption. Have also Nougat

Once I rebooted, I haven't had the problem since.
Hi,
Try running the phone in Safe Mode for a while, to see if it`s the system itself that is keeping it awake or one of the other apps. If this happens when using the device in Safe Mode a full factory reset should resolve this issue.
Cheers.
I had this problem last week. Google gave me a suggestion to go to Media Storage in the apps list(you need to show system processes) and clear the data/cache and the problem cleared right up.

Hi everyone,
I've been using Moto Z4 Verizon version with Visible about 1.5 years now, generally speaking without any issues with the stock ROM and no rooting or any other software changes etc.
For the past couple of weeks, I've notice the battery running out faster than the average times I've used before. For example almost %30 of the battery would drain overnight whereas it would only be %3-4 before.
When I check the system battery statistics there is no one specific installed app draining the battery, so I am not sure if the OS background is using the battery more than necessary.
Has anyone have experienced something similar? what would be good trouble shooting steps?
Thank you in advance!

Try putting it into safe mode overnight, if battery drain is reduced it's an app you installed.
