Switching from Nexus 5 to Moto X? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am about 98% satisfied with my Nexus 5. My only complaint being that the haptic feedback feels wonky. I am on my second device and it turns out I don't think it will get any better. Regardless, the only reason I shied away from the Moto X to begin with was the price point but now that it is being offered at $350 on Cyber Monday, I am highly considering returning my phone and buying the Moto X. Has anyone gone from Moto X to Nexus 5 and have a reason I should stay? It seems like there is not clear cut decision here.

I bought the Nexus 5 on day one and then jumped to Moto X when the moto maker opened up for T-Mobile. I'm back to Nexus 5 now. Both are great devices, here is what I think Moto X advantages are.
1. Better feel in the hand since it's smaller.
2. Motorola has added nice additional features like trusted devices, touch less controls etc. Though some of them can be got on the N5 with alternate apps.
3. Customization of phone look.
Nexus 5:
1. Better Camera
2. Better screen.
3. Feels more snappy because of faster soc. Not much of difference but you can tell that N5 is much snappier.
4. Stock and gets updates faster. Even though Moto got KitKat pretty fast, almost same time as Nexus, I'm not sure if they can do that on all updates.
If you like customization of your phone and better ergonomics then go for the Moto otherwise Nexus has slight edge.

And posts like yours aren't beneficial either. Why not just let the mods do their job?
@OP- I have both devices, and both are great for their own merits. I prefer the Moto X, but still really like the N5 though it took me a while to warm up to it.
Moto X-
Nicer screen (lower res but much nicer colors)
Better battery life
Better in hand feel/size
Software customizations (active notifications are the greatest thing ever)
Better speaker
MotoMaker
N5-
Marginally faster
larger screen
Faster updates
More development
Geek cred

Ditch One S for Nexus 4?

I placed an order for the Nexus 4 16GB on the Play Store last week for around 380 including tax and shipping. It will still take two weeks before it ships, and now I am having second thoughts. I like my One S and am not too impressed by the Nexus 4 specs. Any personal thoughts / opinions?

The only things it has over the one s is double the speed/ram and stock android updated by Google, other than that the one s has a better build quality better camera

I've heard bad things about the N4's battery life. And I am very sceptical to any phone with a back made of glass. That said, it is really cheap for the specs it has. Snapdragon S4 Pro is pretty sexy.
Yea I'm not into the back being made of glass, the galaxy note 2 to me is the best on the market but until I get onto a new carrier which won't be for awhile I'm stuck on the one s

Cannondale, it is only thanks to you that I stuck with the One S. I only had it for 2 days and thought I had bricked it until I found your post on repairing a soft brick.
My opinion is that a LG phone will never have as good a build quality as a HTC phone, also camera is way below HOS spec. I have heard that the battery life is very poor. The only current phone I would possibly swap for is the Galaxy Note 2!
Change your mind and stay with the better phone for now.
I don't know, I see all this praise over the One S, only from the owners of one, I have the Galaxy Nexus and the HTC One S unrooted stock (for now) and I always prefer to use my GNex. Bigger and better display makes a big difference for the better and the customizations and support. The HTC One S is more powerful but the freedom of the Nexus is a wonderful thing! I haven't rooted my One S yet cause I can't find a Cincinnati Bell Wireless RUU for it, I guess there isn't one. So when I use my One S I miss all the things I can do with my Nexus. I suppose I can do the same things with the HTC it just doesn't seem easy or practical. The Nexus is a developers phone and if you are a flash addict like me thats what makes Nexus users always go back to Nexus. Once you go Nexus you never go back! Lol. I loved my Nexus S and love my Galaxy Nexus even more and I am sure I would love the Nexus 4, just don't have any reason to give up on my GNex yet. So if you are happy with the development for the HTC One S then I would probably stay, I still need to root mine to find out. From what I have seen, especially since there is no RUU for my network it seems to much of a hassle.
Unfortunately the one S is a highly under rated phone, people right it off straight away before even using one for more than a few minutes (even though pretty much every expert review has spoken very highly of it and the only disadvantages they mention of it, is the screen sharpness and limited storage), you don't get to appreciate just how good it really is in 10-20 minutes of usage. IMO the only phones that are truly better overall are the:
- XL and the X+
- GS 3 and note II
- RAZR HD/MAXX
Plus having virtually no advertisements for the phone means average joes etc. will think that it mustn't be that good and therefore won't care, advertise/market the phone as good as the GS 3 and iphones and people will be interested.
The galaxy nexus display is nice, definitely sharper/clearer than the S, however, IMO it is too dull for SAMOLED panel, the one S is the best when it comes to calibration for colour settings, whites are the best I have seen on a SAMOLED screen, view ability in sunshine is far better from my usage with both. The display isn't "much" bigger due to the on screen buttons, iirc the height is pretty much the same but the galaxy nexus is a bit wider, I would have liked the screen on the S to have been a bit wider.
I was going to get the nexus 4 if HTC didn't get the JB update out by the end of this month, however, after reading reviews and loads of users comments, I will probably stay with the S till the butterfly comes out here. Seems more like a side/down grade overall:
- Mixed opinion on the screen, some say it is as good if not better than the X display, but others say the screen is washed out and poor viewing angles, which I can't stand, personally I prefer SAMOLED screens overall
- camera overall isn't as good
- build/perceived quality and design IMO isn't as good (still a lovely looking phone though)
Main advantages of the nexus 4 over the S:
- battery life once they fix the problems with the drivers/software
- nexus device so will get updates
I didn't get the N4 simply because it's too big. I have a one S with AOKP JB ROM and it works like a charm--fast internet, data, no problems with any apps I've tried. I recognize I'm probably in JB 4.1 for the life of the phone but JB finally realizes the promise of Android and I'll probably be happy with it for the next couple of years. And on eBay the one S, rooted and all, was a third cheaper than the N4.
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
I had the two phones side by side the other day, and after turning both screens on my decision was made. After being spoiled by the true blacks and rich colors of the one s screen, I couldn't stand the nexus 4 screen.
As far as the specs go, yeah, you get more processing power and ram, but do you need it yet? Does screen size outweigh screen quality? And as far as updates go, if you're rooted, you got 'em.

If I've helped hit the thanks button
I want to thank everyone for your sensible responses and advice. I decided to sell my Nexus 4 to a colleague. It was very, very difficult to give it away. I had only opened the box one time before, and when I opened it again to give it to him, I almost went back on the deal to keep it. But my resolve was strong

I have a N4 and One S. I haven't had it long enough to give a full review. I've been waiting for the successor to the Galaxy Nexus for a while and was turned of at first to hear it was produced by LG. Now that I have one I don't care who made it. He's some simple observations.
Build quality: Very Good - My phone has no creeks or blemishes it's a perfect example.
Screen: Looks great, I don't have much experience with color accuracy but the colors/brightness/clarity are good.
They did speed binning on the SOC and I also got lucky there and got a "Fast" one. I think it just means the kernel will under-volt it by 50ma vs a "Normal" chip
I flashed CM on both phones as fast as I could so there isn't really any difference in terms user experience.
I don't use any of the new 4.2 features.
While it feels thicker laying the two phones flat on a table side by side they seem the same thickness overall. The One S is slimmer in the middle of course.
HTC One S has USB OTG. The Nexus does not, I'm really bummed about that.
Speed wise they are the same to me.
Turns out the 3g/4g switching that alarmed us when the One S came out is hear to stay. It's just more honest reporting of phones connection. Both my phones drop to H when not pulling down data and switch up to H+ when there is actual through put.
I thought I would like the buttons drawn on the screen but they seem to close. I don't like it now that I have it.
That's it for now. I need a little more time to get a better feel for it.
I am getting HTC One S with S4 processor for $180 and Nexus 4 16GB for $280
which one should i choose at this price ? Help experts ....

Anyone come from a Moto X?

As the title suggests, i'm just curious how many people came from the Moto X or have both phones.
I have been using a Moto X for 3 weeks now and my Nexus 5 will be here soon (hopefully) so I was wondering how they compare mostly in terms of battery life or anything else that you guys think is worth mentioning.
Thanks in advance
I did . I just got my nexus 5 today and all i can say is that I love this phone. Too soon to tell about the battery life, but its pretty good so far. I've read in the battery discussion thread that others are having great battery life.

I have both. I've been pretty disappointed with the N5 thus far. I've only had it for about 8 hours but I'm fairly confident when I say that the Moto X is the vastly superior device.
Things I don't like about the N5 so far-
1. UI of Kit Kat (not the N5's fault but treating it as a whole package). The Moto X (4.2) has a wonderful techie theme to it and 4.4 has all but done away with it.
2. Hangouts for SMS (who's idea was this? Fire them)
3. The screen- Washed out colors, poor black levels, bad viewing angles when viewed from certain angles. It's passable, and better when you don't compare it to any other device, but I will take the Moto X's screen over this one any day of the week.
4. Battery life *seems* mediocre at best, but I need to give it a week before I can truly comment on it. I unplugged it at 100% 30 minutes ago and it's already down to 96% and I haven't even touched it. By contrast, I'd have at least 3 hours off charger and 15-20 minutes of solid screen time by the time it hit 96% on the Moto X.
5. Physical feel of the phone/lack of heft- it feels like a fragile, empty shell. Almost like a store mockup that just so happens to work. The Moto X on the other hand, is the best feeling phone I've ever held.
I'm sure I'll come up with more but these are just my initial thoughts.

Yeah, I was really excited to get it but was disappointed by it within the first hour. Sorta wish I went into work today, lost a few hundred bucks from taking the day off.
Another thing I forgot to add to the list are ACTIVE NOTIFICATIONS. I can't tell you guys how many times I pulled my N5 from my pocket today only to be incredibly frustrated that I had to actually turn on my phone to see who texted me. Seriously, who uses the power button anymore? Neanderthals. lol

I got hold of a N5 today too, much like Metal I'm coming from a Moto X and I hate to say it with the exception of the KitKat changes which will come to the X anyway so I'll call that a wash I agree with him on nearly all counts.
The form factor and the battery life are the two biggest things for me. The X just feels so incredible in hand it's spoiling all these larger phones, at least for me. The speaker on the N5 is also far, far worse than the X and thus far the battery life isn't close though it's still on a first charge so I'll wait and see. Going to use it for a day or two and see how it holds up with regular use.

Yeah man, the Moto X is hands down the best phone I've ever owned. And I have had every flagship Android device on Sprint and quite a few on AT&T. The X is the only phone that I have had no desire to flash a custom ROM on. Just made a few mods with GravityBox and it is perfect. Definitely NOT getting rid of it for the N5. I'll probably still keep the N5 just because, but the X will remain my primary phone until the X2 comes out.

Yep. And I live in the DC area and craigslist is pretty busy here so hopefully it shouldn't be too hard. I won't even unbox it to see how it look. I might get a moto x as a secondary device, way too many great feedback for me to over look it.

Can't speak to battery life yet, but...
Nexus 5 looks better.
Nexus 5 feels much sturdier.
I can see why some people (especially females) might find the N5 too big, but to me, the N5 fits better in my hand. I'm convinced it is the increased bezel at the bottom that makes it easier to use the navigation buttons when holding it.
Nexus 5 screen looks so much better than the cartoony, over-saturated AMOLED screen of the Moto X.
Nexus 5 is smoother, less laggy, more buttery all around.
Nexus 5 camera is much better, even after the Moto X update.
Nexus 5 has KitKat now; with Motorola's track record, there is no telling when the Moto X will get the 4.4 update. GNex was released with ICS 4.0, while the Moto RAZR was released as "ICS upgradeable." It took what, nine months?
The only things that the Moto X wins in are...
Active Notifications is a pretty great feature. It needed improvement (more interaction than open or dismiss), but it is better than just an LED indicator.
Shake twice for camera. I enjoyed that.
Unless the Nexus 5 battery is just horrendous--i.e. 2.5 hours of screen-on time, like the GNex--it is clearly the superior device. I would take the Nexus 5 hands down at an even price. The facts that the Nexus 5 is much cheaper, it is unlocked on AT&T, and it will have much more development makes it seem like a silly question to even consider the Moto X. Maybe if I had kid hands?
tl; dr: Nexus 5 wins by a long shot.
I am currently debating between these two phones. I really like the active notifications feature I have heard about on the Moto X, but not sure if that alone would justify the price difference to me. I am fine with the battery life on my N4, so if the N5 battery is similar it won't matter to me that the Moto X is better in that regard. I like the performance I have seen from the N5, but from what I understand the Moto X is silky smooth even with a weaker processor.
I am most curious though how the wake-by-voice / touchless controls compares between the two. Can anybody who has used both compare those at all? Are they the same? Is the Moto X slightly better (if so, how)? Is the Nexus 5 slightly better (again if so, how)?
Thanks

Wow....I also have both devices, and you've summed up my thoughts perfectly. I do like the Nexus 5 and plan on using both phones regularly, but the screen being washed out irritates me, especially since the Nexus 4 had the same well known problem. Battery life also is on par with yours; I had an HTC One as well and the battery was also nothing to write home about. Maybe its just 1080p phones in general.

Nexus 5 (and all other 4.4 android phones) will need to be powered on before they can start listening.
Moto X is the ONLY phone that allows you to do it while the screen is off.

The Nexus 5 is smoother. This isn't even close. The Moto X can get laggy. I've only had the Nexus 5 for 24 hours, but it has shown zero signs of lag. The Moto X showed signs within the first ten minutes.

That being said, the Moto X's always-on listening is vastly overrated. For one, the "Okay, Google Now" command screws up all the time. More often than not, the "Now" part shows up as part of the command being issued when the speech is converted to text. So, for example, when I say "Okay, Google Now. Call John." instead of calling John, it does a Google search for "Now call John." I'd say the Moto X has a 15-20% accuracy when speaking to it from the off position. Remember the commercial where they say "Okay Google Now, play [insert track name]?" Give it a shot. I tried 15-20 times, and it never worked. On top of all of this inaccuracy, there is a several second delay between issuing the command and the phone actually recognizing the speech and processing. The real killer is that it is supposed to be trained to your voice, but it obviously lacks the technology to really do so. Therefore, the voice commands that can be issued with a secure lock screen are very limited. If you have a secure lock screen, this feature is useless.
With the Nexus 5, yes, the phone does have to be on to issue a command, but it works. So far, my Nexus 5 has always recognized my command first try. It converts my speech to text more accurately than I thought possible. Coming from the Moto X, I noticed a huge difference here, and I was very pleasantly surprised.
So, sure, the always-listening function on the Moto X would be cool, but it simply doesn't work within any acceptable range of accuracy. I would much rather turn on my phone and have it register my command first try than have to issue the command three times only to give up and do the task manually.

[Q] If not a Nexus 5, then what?

I keep dithering back and forth between buying the Nexus 5 or "something else." My wife has the Nexus 4, and I'm looking to replace our outmoded land-line with a cellphone of my own now. We use T-Mobile and I'm quite the technology addict, so I'm always on the lookout for something "high end."
Google is currently saying 2-3 weeks for Nexus 5 orders, which unfortunately gives me plenty of time to consider other options. Are there any? Does the Galaxy S4 or HTC One even come close to the Nexus 5, technologically speaking? I've also read good things about the Galaxy Note 3. If you could pick something "not the Nexus 5," what would it be?
Any opinion is appreciated!

In my humble opinion, the only other phone to even consider right now besides the Nexus 5 is the Moto X. I have both phones, and still prefer the Moto X over the N5 for a variety of reasons. It really is the ultimate smartphone to me. The N5 is great and has its own merits, don't get me wrong, but the Moto X is the complete package. Motorola absolutely nailed it with that thing. I've also owned the HTC One and GS4, and neither can touch the X.

I'd say the s4 and HTC one are as good or better than the n5. With that said I have an n5 in the mail. I didn't get the s4 or one mainly because the bootloaders are locked and you can't do much with them with out a lot of mickey mouse. If you're into messing with your phone and having fun with it the n5 is hands down the winner. I looked at the s4 for a long time and with all the crap Samsung and the carriers were doing with it I wouldn't get it for the world.

Warning: A lot of writing
Well, we're in a Nexus 5 forum and bias is to be expected. However, I've had a Gnex, Nexus S, and am currently rocking a Galaxy Note 2. A Nexus 5 is due to arrive today for me. I've somewhat been at a cross for the last couple of days. I am pretty sure it's because I keep reading about the defects, faults, and comparisons of the N5 to others.
But, because of this, I am wondering if I've made the right choice. There are two other choices that cannot leave my head and that's the LG G2 and the Moto X. The two are completely different phones and it's almost like the Nexus 5 is the perfect balance between the two. Perfect isn't what I'm looking for, more like an even balance of the two.
On one side, the G2, you have an exceptional device with many internals similar to the Nexus 5 but with specs such as higher batter capacity, higher megapixel camera, IR blaster, larger size screen, etc. However, with the G2 comes the four different variants for US carriers, LG's skin, and minimal developer support. I don't even know if it'll be updated for long. It's what drove me nuts about my Note 2 although I loved its hardware. My problem with the G2 is the unknown support lifetime and small developer community. I consider it due to its superior (especially battery) hardware aspects of it.
Then, you have the Moto X. I can't say there's much of a difference in terms of software development due to locked bootloaders, but the stock software is amazing. No one has any complaints of it. It's either you love it and can't live without it or you simply have no use for the feautures. It's not a bad phone at all. It has lower end specs, but performs CLOSE, but not as fast as a Nexus 5. It has been confirmed to be updating to KitKat. The problem with the Moto X is a much smaller, yet friendly, developer community. There also seems to be a huge lack of accessories for the two devices and that's a bit of a big deal.
It seemed like the Nexus would acquire some features of the Moto X like touchless controls and an extermely efficient battery. But, that wasn't the case. We know because it's a Nexus device that it's going to get support from its userbase for quite some times and that means a lot for me. But it seems like there is just so much wrong with the phone hardware wise that I'm stuck. I don't want a crap battery (coming from Note 2 of course) and a lower-output speaker but I'd really appreciate constant developer support and guaranteed updates.
TL;DR There is no perfect device at the moment. Each device will require you to sacrifice something that you believe is worth sacrificing. You sacrifice accessories, developer community, update lifetime, and other small things for the Moto/G2. But, with each of those devices you gain something a Nexus can't give you with a larger battery and better battery life, smaller or bigger screen size, handy software features (touchless, knock knock, etc.).
Price isn't a factor for me either and I know you can root these devices but that comes with broken features and instability. I'd be great to have a G2 with stable 4.4 and touchless controls. That's the perfect device, IMO.
I know I rambled a bit too much and a little off topic, but I needed to kind of let this out somewhere. Heh. Seriously though, it's an amazing time for us smartphone lovers. You don't lose in either choice you make. We're just picky. Good luck!

Well, you've dithered this long, what's another 2-3w?
For the longest I decided to get the Moto X. I had seen the specs for Nexus 5 and all the leaks but I was set on the X. That was until the Nexus 5 was launched and I made my decision in less than 30 minutes of launch. I'm in love with my Nexus 5 and don't regret my decision at all. Loving the bigger screen but if I could not have gotten the Nexus 5 I definitely would've gotten the Moto X. Love the form fit. Never would have considered the S4 or HTC One. I prefer as close to vanilla android as I can get and the Moto X is pretty amazing. But then again so is the Nexus 5. I would've waited for either.

Everyone loves the HTC One. I think the GS4 is better. Technologically speaking, the GS4 is as good as the Nexus 5. I just prefer the Nexus 5. My girlfriend prefers her GS4 to my N5. They are both great phones. Also, as someone else mentioned, the G2 is supposed to be pretty good, but I haven't given it a try. "Technologically speaking," you will not find a better device than the Note 3. It's huge, though, so you should make sure you're comfortable with it. I would rather have the Nexus 5 for my phone and a Nexus 7 as a tablet rather than a single phablet like the Note 3. Funny thing is, the N5 + the N7 is about the same price as the Note 3.

I personally hated the Moto X. I found it poorly made and laggy. It is definitely not a future-proof device. It's behind the GS4 and HTC One, both of which predate it by 4-5 months. But if you are looking for something future proof, you should either get the Nexus 5, which is guaranteed to receive the latest software updates for at least two years, or the Note 3, which has better hardware than any other phone on the market. Or, if you can wait until April, get the GS5 when it comes out.
got-killed: you make some good points for each phone. But i have to say the things that really led me to get the Nexus 5 (aside from really wanting a new phone and having no upgrades available yet through AT&T) to upgrade from my Galaxy S3 are:
1) Developer support, as you mentioned, but also updates direct from Google, without any software really being locked down and the source always available, which also means BETTER custom ROM's.
2) The screen is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
3) .... did i mention updates directly from Google?
But in all seriousness... yes, the Moto X has some nice features.... but i honestly can't imagine myself using them very often. Touchless operation.... I had enough trouble with Touchwiz waking my phone when i received a text message, and accidentally unlocking the phone through my pocket (which you'd be surprised just how well these screens work through a layer of cotton and denim). Kinda like the whole "Pocket Detect" feature the S3 has, where it'll automatically lock the phone if it seems like you've put the phone in your pocket. Nice... but yea... easier to just hit the button on the side of the phone and not worry about IF it locked.
Not sure what you mean by the Nexus 5 not having an energy efficient battery. The battery in the Nexus 5 is ever so slightly bigger than what's in the Moto X, and also has an ultra-low power bonus CPU core to greatly minimize battery usage while the phone is asleep. I can't say i use my phone heavily... but it's already doing much better than my GS3 ever really did. Can get 14 hours on a charge with nearly an hour of screen time, and still have upwards of 20% battery life left, depending what i was doing with the phone.... and that was only on it's second charge so far.
And yes... the speaker is a fair bit quieter than on that of something like my previous Galaxy S3.... but the side-by-side comparison between the two, it's no contest. I'd MUCH rather have the superior sound quality from the Nexus 5's speaker than what the S3 has. The sound is rather tinny on the S3. Watching a video of Sungha Jung playing his acoustic guitar is not only practically ear-splittingly high pitched on the S3, but the lower tones when he's drumming on the side of the guitar with his wrist while playing are for the most part non-existent from the speaker. The Nexus 5's speaker can output tones a fair bit deeper than the S3's speaker can, and the highs aren't as squeal-y. And i'm sure, either be it from the development community or from Google themselves, we'll probably see some sort of mod to make the volume louder from the N5's speaker.
Picking a phone is very personal choice. Go to the store and play with the models you can, go to an AT&T store to check out the Moto X.
Personally it comes down to this, if I were to buy a phone on a subsidized, or JUMP, plan it would be the Moto X. But being that I usually buy a phone and hold onto it for a couple of years, and I am buying in cash, the nexus made much more sense to me.
While the moto x is great, imho, it isn't future proof. How will it perform in a year or two, what about the developer community. Add to that, you couldn't get the 32 gb model on T-Mobile, and I went with the Nexus 5.
But, I will admit, it is much more comfortable in my hand and pocket than the Nexus 5.
I don't regret my decision at all.
Thank you everyone for your input and ideas! You're a GREAT community here!
After thinking about it some more, I actually cancelled my Nexus 5 order. Not because I don't want the phone anymore, but because I realized my real issue here is that I'm just not comfortable with brand new tech that barely hit the market. I've felt a little let-down with my 1st gen Nexus 7 getting slower and slower over time and it's made me a bit gun shy to run out and buy the "next big thing" the moment it hits the market (like I did with my tablet).
I'll spend some time researching all the suggestions posted here before I dive back in. Honestly, the MotoX never even crossed my radar, but it sounds like it has a solid following and deserves some consideration.
Thank you again! And please feel free to keep posting your ideas! I'll keep coming back and reading them.
As per sig i have 3 devices. .just got the nexus 5 today and its going back tomorrow and I will buy the G2...I should have went with it in the first place but I couldnt resist the white nexus.
Nice device just not for me..if you want a 5 inch device...s4 hands down..or if you want to go a bit bigger G2.
Note 3 is a beast of a device...nuff said there.

Just remember someone like you, I gather, will be stuck with what you get out of the box(OOB). The nexus/playstore editions have the least bloat and get OS updates the quickest... that is IF you decide to go with an Android device, but as I intimated before, you've dithered so long now, why hurry? Go look around some more until you're sure of what you want/need/are comfortable with.
Personally, I REALLY like nexuses for their non-bloatwareness, although when I bought my last phone the nexus 4 there was nothing but the n4 really, the the One and S4 hit the play store, but I decided to go with the n5 again. Maybe next time something different especially if mfgs. like ASUS step into the ring and also limit bloat plus update fairly regularly(I have shield(tegra 4) FYI which has already gotten one OS update so far, I also have the n7(2013 version snapdragon v. your tegra3 2012 version), also most of my desktop and home networking is also ASUS(motherboard(P9X79, I build my own), router(AC66U), monitor))...
Good luck, and I'll just re-iterate you've waited this long, so just don't jump into anything willynilly, but also I'd suggest not terminally procrastinating...

I owned the first generation Nexus 7. Bought it the day it was released. It is the only device I've owned that really did slow down like you said. It is too early to speak for the Nexus 5, but this problem did not exist on the GNex, Nexus 4, Nexus 10, or second generation Nexus 7. I ran into the problem with AOSP based custom ROMs on my GS3, but not with stock TW or TW based custom ROMs. The first generation Nexus 7 just didn't have great hardware, and it showed after lots of use, especially on the 8gb version. I don't think you should have that fear going into the N5, but I think you're being smart holding off until you're sure. I jumped the gun with the Moto X and got just above half of what I paid when I resold the PoS.

I bought a N5 for experiment and I will stick with my Z1. Better camera, quality, waterproofness, better screen even though z1 is bad for yellow tint N5 is worse. With the N5 you simply get what you pay for but I would pay a little more for the premium glass/aluminum finish phones like the One or my Z1
I have had the HTC One and I currently have the Note 3 and the Nexus 5 (My 3rd Nexus over the past few years). I really enjoyed the Note 3 but the size got to me. I have not had the N5 long enough to really form an opinion other than the battery life sucks compared to the Note 3. Also the N5 seems a little less polished than the One or Note. So far the best every day phone was the HTC One that opinion might change with more time with the N5. Just my .02.

So wait.... you're saying if you want a 5" device, you shouldn't even consider the 4.95" Nexus 5 and instead get the 5" GS4... but if you want something a bit bigger, you should get the 5.2" LG G2? Really nitpicking over .25", aren't we?
And i'm really loving the people who insist on constantly pointing out the battery life of the Nexus 5 sucks in comparison to *insert phone here*.... especially when that phone is the Note 3. Yes, the Note 3's screen is nearly an inch larger than the Nexus 5's.... but the battery is also 39% larger. That's like somehow expecting a V6 Jeep Cherokee to perform just as well as a V8.
Don't get why everyone's saying the battery is crap, anyway. I don't think it's THAT bad... and i'm coming from a Galaxy S3.... where it seemed if you did anything more than some texting and web browsing, you would basically be lucky to make it through an 8-hour work day and still have a decent amount of battery life left. first two days with the N5, and i've gone 14 hours with similar usage as i had on my GS3, and still had 20-40% battery life remaining.

So how is the moto g?

I cracked the screen on my nexus 4 and only half of the screen response to touch. Now question is would it be worth it to replace the screen on my nexus 4 (which I love) or just purchase a moto g? I am only asking in the sense of hoping that there are other nexus 4 users who have switched over.
The Nexus 4 is noticeably more powerful with graphics intensive games, or when you have many apps open (slight juddering in the web browser, or heavy apps because only 1GB Ram), but the Moto G will easily beat the N4 on battery life with heavy use, and has working usb-otg out of the box.
Mine has been on for 3 days and I still have 35% battery left. I prefer the Moto G screen which is warmer than the N4 as well. If it worth it. Biggest advantages of N4 are NFC, Miracast/dual band wifi and 2GB ram. Kit Kat will also benefit the Moto G greatly as it has a smaller footprint in memory.
The screen on the Moto G is better and the battery life is better as well. These two are the most important for me so that's why I'm moving on from my Nexus 4 since neither of those criteria fit with the Nexus 4 in comparison with the Moto G.
The added bonus with the Moto G is the fact that it's one handed use is so much more comfortable than the Nexus 4. I find the Nexus 4 too wide and even found the Nexus 5 a bit more better to use for some reason over it.
I've had both the Nexus 4 and Moto G.. In my opinion they're almost evenly matched, but overall I'd go with the Nexus 4. It's a bit more powerful and has faster updates but has worse battery life(can be improved with a custom kernel) and not as good a screen(although still good)
Yes I have to admit, the screen on the nexus 4 seemed faded. I just tried to take it apart and it's becoming a project and glass is everywhere from the screen. I am going to order a moto g. Screw it! Lol
I've had a nexus 4. I bought my Moto g as a second phone, I like how it was similar to the nexus 4. I'm shocked how similar they are, it's maybe got less punch on paper! But in use it feels just as good and the screen is far better. A fantastic device that's quick and easy to use. I'd say it holds its own against any of last years top phones & it's by no means a sluch against this years. My s4 is of course quicker, but there isn't a huge gulf between them as you might think. I'd expect this kind of difference from a device £100 cheaper, not £400 cheaper. Truly amazing and can't wait to see it on 4.4 with art enabled, expect your phone to fly.

I would recommend replacing the screen yourself on the N4, then either keep it or sell it and then buy a Moto G (which is what I did after my screen broke -- it had other probles and I was sick of it lol). Even if you don't fix it, people still buy cracked screen N4s on eBay, so definitely sell it.

Bought mine after buying a new screen for a nexus and the digitizer not working, after dropping £70 on a non working screen (either due to a dodgy eBay seller or heavy handed ness on my part) I figured I'd "downgrade" to a motoG rather than chance it again.
I've yet to notice any significant area in which the motoG lets me down in relation to my old nexus 4. It plays the games I was playing on my nexus, the battery stamps the nexus into the ground, the call quality is superb. GPS is instant on the locking side too.
Really... After a month of owning my motoG I can't honestly see any downside in replacing my nexus 4 with it.

Help me Decide. OnePlus One vs Moto X (2nd Gen).

Hi. I know this has been brought to question many, many times, but still, i'm having a hard time deciding. I got a Black Friday Code, which is valid until December 15. So i could get my hands on a Moto X (32gb) for around 420$. I've used the Moto X (2nd gen) and it's a beautiful phone. Feels premium in my hands and the screen and operating system is beautiful, Moto Voice is accurate and snappy, i loved the phone overall. On the other hand, there is this OnePlus One. 0.3 inches larger, but not sure if the proportion is the same (seems taller, but not wider, might be due to the capacitive buttons on the bottom). What i like about the OnePlus One better? - Capacitive Buttons, not a fan of of on-screen buttons, they take quite a chunk of my screen size. - Slightly large screen. (My note 3 suffered an accident, and its the phone i am looking to replace, i am used to the 5.5 inches, even if 0.3 difference inches is negligible, i can surely feel it between a 4.7 inch and a 5 inch phone). - Larger Battery. 'nuff said here. - 64 vs 32 GB Storage, neither of them has SD card slots, but 64G is huge for me.
"Higher" Levels of customization are irrelevant to me. I am a power user, and i've been around android since the times of the Motorola Milestone (Android Eclair 2.1) so i really like customization, but i could achieve that on a rooted Moto X and Xposed Modules and Such.
I am aware of some defective units being shipped, the yellow bleed on the bottom of the screen and the "already solved" black bar bug.
So question is, from you users, who have had both devices in hand, which one would you keep and why.
I am aware of the superior Customer Service by Motorola, but, is really the defective percentage of OnePlus One phones high? Is it really unstable to be your daily driver?
For me it comes to reliability vs power using. I wish both came in the same package, and they probably do, but surely outside my price range.
Thanks for your help!

Because nobody wants them or because of the issues with the phone itself?
There really isn't a problem with this phone. You'll hear more complaints than praises, like anything. Battery life is a big thing for me. So I choose the one plus.
Go with the oneplus one man. Happy person over here, been having mines for 3 months and no issues other than some bugs from hardcore flashing...

What ever blows your dress up. If you don't mind dumping the money for the X get it. If you want to save your money and still have a great phone get the 1+.
I have a Opo and considering the switch mostly for the software additions that Moto added. My wife just ordered one and once she gets hers I'll play with it and make a determination.
If I could make the decision again, it would be for the moto x... Yes, more expensive and a smaller screen, however at least I KNOW that I will be getting a quality unit with some level of manufacturer support... OPO said my dead pixel is normal and it shouldn't bother me that much... Do yourself a favor and get the moto x
Yeah, if you can afford it get moto x. And I been pretty happy with my One. But the warranty issues are concerning.
Thanks guys.
I asked myself the same question some time ago and I got the OPO.
I wanted yo try something different, and I'm pretty happy with my OPO, no problems at all.
My wife's Moto X arrived. It's a beautiful phone. The screen is (inaccurately) punchy. The added Moto software tweaks are pretty fantastic. The build is phenomenal. And it already has Lollipop. Performance is super snappy--noticeably better than the OPO.
Battery life, however, is a big step down from the OPO. And obviously it's more expensive. Camera looks to be about the same.
The One is really cool. I use mine since 6 months and it runs perfectly!
Comparison of specs: gsmarena .com /compare.php3?idPhone1=5601&idPhone2=6327
The OPO beats the MotoX hands down. I find the build quality to be really good, I love the soft back (Sandstone black edition) and metal strip running around the phone edges. Luckily, I haven't had any issues with the phone so can't say much about how helpful Oneplus is with warranty.

My current daily driver is a Moto X Pure Edition. I'm in possession of a OPO for a little while (another strange story that I'll elaborate on later if anyone's interested) so I decided to do a little A-B comparison. I have to say that I am very impressed by the OPO. But as Stories pointed out, I too found the Moto X to be much snappier and responsive. This surprised me, a lot because they have identical processors, and the OPO has 3gb ram vs 2gb for the X. Am I missing something here? FWIW: the OPO is brand new, box stock, locked bootloader etc....
Edit: I'm not dissing the OPO, rather I'm looking for suggestions to close the gap with the X.
When I first receive the OPO the size a big bit hard getting use to coming from Nexus 5. But after a month with this phone it's hands down the best phone out there. Ridiculous battery life tons of support and developments. It's like a nexus 5 with double the battery life

I'm kind of fighting with a similar issue; Nexus 6 or OPO. I have both and have been using the N6 as my daily driver for the past week and 1/2. Great phone, love the big screen, super fast even with encryption on. The OPO just keeps drawing me back, its really that good. If you go over to the N6 thread you will see the same kind of issues that you see in the OPO thread, so I always take that with a grain of salt, neither pf the phones had any issues at all.
Either of your choices are good ones for sure. The OPO has the best battery life I've used in the last 5-6 years, I came from a N5, HTC One. It boils down, for me anyway, what features do you want and who best can fulfill it.
Ultimately you have to make the choice, but honestly you can't go wrong with the OPO.
I have owned both devices and I would go OnePlus one simply because the battery life of the Moto X is just not good at all. It does get you through a work day but some days I need more juice and I have to charge the phone several times a day. I recently went to NY and I had to charge the phone 3 times that day. That sucks to me. If it wasn't for battery life then it'll be a harder choice. Oh yeah, if camera is something you really need then Moto X is a no no. Here are my pros and cons between both devices:
Moto X pros over One +1:
-Fits much better in hand
-Very stylish, customizable look
-Extremely fluid performance, zero lag
-front facing speaker are only bested by The boomsound speakers
-The Motorola features are the best features added to android
Cons:
-Mediocre battery life
- crappy camera
- very limited storage options
- Development is almost non existent
One +1 pros over Moto X:
- bigger display, more screen real estate
- Much better battery life
- Much better camera
- Development is pretty good
- more storage
- Price
Cons:
- warranty issues
- yellow tint issues on many panels
- HArd to purchase ( fixed?)
- CM has some bugs (fixable with roms)
The best way to compare devices is to pretend they came out the same day. The One Plus is a few months old but if it was released today alongside the Moto X, considering the price, specs, development, battery life, performance and all, honestly I think the OnePlus would be the best option IMO.
I had all moto phones and I bought the oneplus one and I am very happy. I had the droid maxx (newest version of the max line) and other moto/droid phones before the 1+ one I'm glad that in switched. I have acdisplay to get my active display. The only thing I miss is the twist to activate camera.

I have to agree with your assessment of both devices. The decision relative to which criteria are most important is obviously a personal one. Thanks for your input.

A question for you. Do any of the custom ROMs available for the OPO significantly improve the responsiveness and fluidity, vs stock CM11S?
