What rom are you using, and what version of WiFi Tether?
Also can you be more descriptive of the problem, are you unable to see the wifi broadcasted from your phone on your computer?
PS i have seem WiFi tether be a bit buggy on some roms, or maybe its just particular versions of wifi tether that cause it, to where you have to go into, and then back out of airplane mode after you start the tether. Have you tried this?

you can try downloading this version and installing it
http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wireless_tether_2_0_2.apk
I still don't understand. Can you connect to the phone with a computer?
1. You can either connect to the phone over wifi, but don't have internet on your PC
2. You can see the phone as a wireless network, but trying to connect fails
or
3. You can't see the phone as a wireless network.
I know your typing on your phone, but it would make it easier for us to help you if you could give more specific information and used punctuation. I don't expect perfect grammar, but atleast use some periods every now and then. Your sentences run together and I cant tell what your saying. No hard feelings though
EDIT, after re-reading your posts a few times, I think your saying you can connect over WiFI to your phone after you enable Wireless tether, and it all seems good, but you don't have an internet connection on your PC; the wireless tether app never shows any data transferred either direction? If this is the case, open the app, start the tether, connect to it with your PC. Then, on your phone, press menu, then select "Show log", and lets see what it says.
Good luck =)

ok so i tryed and the log said it was all done but it wonk work at all. so heres the deal ill try to explain it again. ok so i open it up (on every rom with it PRE installed so it should deff work) it says installing files for it. when its done i press the green button, it asks for super user and i press always allow. then at bottom were it should say the down is 0.~ and up is 0.~ it stays at o.o and in my taskbar were it should show im using 3g it doesnt at all. so its like the app cant find the 3g im using or something of that sort. its hard to explain this since i dont understand why it wont work. lastly is there a Cretan pri or anything like that i need to run this?
Looking at the task bar in the first post it shows you are connected to 3g, going from left to right in the pic you attached I see:
Battery(or memory?) % indicator, Wifi Tether icon,Location indicator icon(blue circle with crosshairs), 3g Icon that looks like this (3G), Signal strength bars(2), circular orange battery indicator( only partially visible because battery is low, and the clock.
Did you try the newer version linked to above?
Try the newer version if you haven't, also..
open wifi tether, press menu, go to setup...
be sure bluetooth is not checked,
turn off wifi-Encryption
try changing the SSID
try changing the channel
Disable access control
Does your computer say it connected successfully?
Lets be sure its actually connecting properly. We'll be sure its getting its IPaddress from the phone, and not trying to use default windows ip or no IP
From your computer, go to start->run then type in CMD, press enter.
from there, type ipconfig, and see what your IPv4 Address is.
You may want to uninstall the app completely either through the phone or using adb. Then download this one http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_1_60_htc.apk&can=2&q=HTC+Donut and move it to your tools folder in the sdk.
From command prompt type
Code:
adb install wireless_tether_1_60_htc.apk
Also once you start the wireless tether app can you see it from your computer. You might want to make sure you are choosing the correct network. Some of the wireless apps have AndroidTether as the network name and some have G1Tether. Once you click the correct one you should feel your phone vibrate after it is connected, somewhere between 5 and 20 seconds and in your drop down menu it should say it is connected.

Uninstall that version, put 1.6 back on. Turn tether on, then connect from your computer. Then back on your phone, press menu, then access control, and when you see a computer info pop up in that menu, click the check box beside it for good measure. Then give it about a minute or so, then try to connect. See, it may not be the app itself. Go into network connections on your computer, right click the wireless network adapter icon, go to properties. Where it says ip v4, click that and go to settings I believe, then click automatically get ip address. Press ok. Then disconnect from your hero tether and re tether.

Ok, So I was having this same exact problem and still from time to time do. I can connect my pc to it and it is connected but everytime I open the web browser its say the page cannot load, please check internet connection and try again. So after some searching around I found that this worked for me.
1.) start Wifi tether
2.) connect pc to new wifi network (default name "AndroidTether")
3.) on phone while in wifi tether (dont back out or close app) push and hold the phone off button to bring up the power menu
4.) Select Mobile network to disable the connection
5.) repeat last 2 steps but this time to re-enable the connection.
6.) close browser on computer and open back up... and...
Presto!!! internet connected and working great.
Dont know why it does this but it is a good work around.
Hope it helps and works for you as it did for me.

it sounds like you forgot a couple of steps... after it asked you for SU permissions and you clicked always allow, it should then be connected..
BUT you have to click menu on your phone, then click access control. make sure your phone says "Access-Control is enabled." if not click "Enable"
Now don't back out on ur phone or anything.. leave it with this menu up..
On you computer pull up your wireless networks, and if your using version 1.60 pre3 then you will see G1Tether. Click to connect.. (make sure ur not connected to any other network at the time and if u are disconnect that first)
once you have connected to G1Tether on your computer, wait about 30 secs and on your phone, in that same menu that u left open, under Access-Control is enabled, it should now have a dialogue that says Connected/Authorized Clients and should have you credentials. MAKE SURE u tick the box. Then click on menu from ur phone and click Apply Settings.
after that u should be connected...

If anyone wants a completely bug-free wireless tether:
1. make a folder called android.tether on your SD card.
2. Unzip the file below into that folder.
3. Download the newest Wireless Tether from the market.
4. Enjoy bug free tethering.

The only steps I take when using the tethering app is change the ssid to my personal choice, and then open the access control and set it up for security by only allowing my laptop to connect. As for the d/l speeds, that really depends on your individual situation. Since I have wimax available, my speeds are very good. Hope this helps ...

Here's specifically what I do ...
Leave the device profile on auto, leave the setup method on auto, do not enable encryption. Check the boxes on access control, vibrate on connect, and disable wake lock. Next, I start the tethering ... once connected, go into access control through the menu, where you will see the mac address of your connected device. Check the box, and save through the menu. This will secure your signal so that no one else can connect. I then will turn off the tethering and then re-start the tethering app. This will allow the access control to start with the saved configuration. Sorry if this is too elementary ... just wanted to be helpful with the details.

Leaving the device on auto & auto put my tether in an 'ad hoc' network. If you want it to be more like an actual wireless router then change the device profile to Google Nexus One and Setup Method to softap(master). That will create an 'infrastructure' network meaning just about anything with a wireless connection should connect to it. My friends PS3 can't connect to ad hoc networks, so I played around with it for a bit.
Hope this helps in anyway.

anytime, bro. Glad you got it working.
Anyone have luck connecting to a PEAP AP with credentials, I tried some apps that don't seem to work? I can't connect at my University.
Photon Q
I haven't been able to join my work's network with the photon q either. Someone in my thread suggested "explicitly trusting" the certificate but I haven't had the chance to see if the network team is competent enough to do that.
Other people at work also have other motorola phones with ICS so I'll ask them if they can connect. I haven't seen any other devices struggle like the photon q. It just constantly says connecting and then giving up. I can manually set everything correctly and it doesn't matter, if I don't manually create the profile it never asks for the rest of the information.
I'm really at a loss but if sprint's LTE announcements hold true in a couple weeks it may not even matter (assuming an LTE signal is even remotely discoverable).
same for me, I'm just hoping for an JB update soon(yeah right) cause LTE will never be here, but we don't even have wimax. thanks

I know... I do miss my evo shift's wimax, sometimes my work network was so crappy that I'd just wirelessly tether to my phone and got much better speeds.
Interesting that you noted JB. Is the general consensus that Motorola is rather slow about releasing OS updates? My co-worker with the Droid 4 just got ICS a few weeks ago while the Galaxy Nexus has been starting to get JB on sprint.
Successful connect to EAP
Well, my university has 802.1x EAP for wifi encryption. I was unable to connect from my Photon Q using the wifi settings. I have, however, found a workaround. It consists of using this app "WiFi Connection Manager" (Sorry I can't post the link)
I added the network manually through this app, and my phone connects to the network automatically.
Ill write down the steps for my University's network:
1) Click on the app "WiFi Manager"
2) Click on the menu button inside the app
3) "Manual Add Network"
4)Put in the credentials
5) Click Add
6) the phone should connect to the Enterprise network now.
Hopefully it works for everyone who needs it.

I'll have to give this a shot when I go to work tomorrow, I had the network director fiddling with my phone for a while and checking the AP manager and they just weren't talking properly. We loaded our certificate onto the phone as well and that had no effect.
EDIT: IT WORKED. Oddly enough the APs showed up as WPA/WPA2 PSK in the program, but when I manually created the profile with the settings that I know are correct it did eventually connect and work.
good work guys, my univeristy just switched over to peap and this thread helped.
Thanks, guys. Once I had gotten my Photon Q back in late September, I was able to connect to my Universities' wi-fi, although it was kind of a pain because I had to delete and re-create the network profile a few times before it would work. A few weeks ago, though, we had a security certificate expire, and so for the past three weeks I've been unable to connect to our wi-fi. Using the WiFi Connection Manager to manually create the profile worked like a charm though!
In case people are curious, our Universities wi-fi is 802.1X EAP/PEAP using MSCHAPv2 as Phase 2 authentication.

Thanks for this thread, and thanks for this post. I had the same thing happen. My work wifi showed WPA/WPA2, ect., and I could not enter my credentials. We also have an open wifi, which the program kept logging into automatically, but it doesn't work for me because it doesn't allow ssl. So, I had to delete the open network, go to the settings to filter the scan to ignore open networks, then add the secure network manually with all the credentials entered. Then it worked.
Hey All
since upgrading to CROM-i v5 i have been having some issues with connecting to me work WiFi, i never had any issues before v5 but this seems like the only place that has issues. We use Cisco access points that run through out network and we are currently using 802.1xEAP authentication. All devices need to authenticate via MAC's which i have passed onto so they can add it in but when i enter in my details it just stays at "Connecting..." and just hangs there and never ever connects.
i use the tablet at home and it connects with no issues.
Anyone have any ideas???
Cheers

So baggs, should I, a US user who is on 5.03, install WW version to try and make mine stop dropping connections after sleeping? I'm also having a hard time connecting to my ATT wireless router. And other places that I used to be connectable with before I got my 20x Dock. I love the dock but need wireless connectivity. I wanna watch movies in bed, err before sleepie time anyways.

I keep trying to log into the network at home and on job sites but the wireless utility never seems to accept my passwords. I can't get a signal reading, which is bollocks as I see high signal strength from the access point in the wireless AP list. I will install logcat and capture some logs later.
I dont recall the wireless being this heniky before the newest ROM. :crying: Oh and sorry bought the bags, I see after more careful reading its "dags"!
seems to me that im not the only with this new wifi connection problemj hmmm i still havent been able to connect on my home wifi even with a reformat, factory reset and fresh install of the newest cromi 5.0.4

This may be mute, going to try flashing 5.04 and see if that makes a difference. But per your request Im attaching both startup and sleep recover logs. Hope it helps. I have no network connectivity at this point!
Edit0: I did the update and at first network didn't connect. So I "forgot" and then reselected my network and now I am connected and am getting email, updates from apps, and other goodies. Will try sleep and recovery to see if that works too. Just hope it works going forward so I can watch some movies and family guy episodes when trying to go to sleep. I'm happier for now at least. If this fails I will go back to 5.02.......

sorry for the late reply just got back from overseas holiday and 2nd day back at work.
i reflashed using WW and still have the same issue. i think it might be y works WiFi they must have changed something and cant connect now. might have to get them to recheck that my MAC is still in the allowed group but just so weird that it stopped working.
will have to confirm what channel they are using and get back to ya. It does find the connection but when ever it tries to connect it just sits on "Connecting..." and just times out.

Just confirmed with our network guys here we dont have a specific channel set for wireless devices, they have set it to auto-select so it will choose the least congested channel and try and connect. They also auto-adjust down/up their power so they dont overlap with other points of the same network.
Dont know if that will mean much to ya sbdags. But i might try and dig up the older versions and see which version it started happening.
you recommend doing a wipe and then flashing? or is it fine to start from 5.0 and dirty flash the way up till it stops? also you recommend using a specific kernel? i have been using _that's kernel from version 5.
Cheers

5.0 and dirty flash up should be fine. Also stay on that 4 as that is a stable kernel until you can determine if there is a problem.

I am not running that rom.. I would try to go into settings and when your on your wi-fi menu. I have three vertical dots in the upper right hand of the screen.. Push and a drop down menu will appear.. Go to advanced.. If you have these options turn them off.... Network notification...Scanning always available and wi-fi optimization...Than make sure if you have a wi-fi region code it is set to your location.......Hope this helps thx lj
Maybe a reboot after all that LOL!!!!

hmmmmmm just tried what you suggested @lj50036 actually got a little further than before, attempts to connect and does for a 1 second and then drops out and turns my WiFi off and then back on, and attempts to connect again and does for 1sec and then sits at Connecting... again and just keeps cycling around like that...
i was able to get a guest account and that connects no problems, but the way that i am trying right now actually authenticates through my domain account and allows me access to my works environment
thanks for the input guys much appreciated... i guess its just a lost cause.
Cheers
As the title say I want to know if there is a way to turn on WiFi hotspot without turning off WiFi I saw this feature in one of my friend's phone he was running 2.3 (Gingerbread). Is there anything like this for KitKat (4.4.2) ? Please recommend external apps or method.
Thanks

its not software related, its built in to the phone itself. most phones cant handle both connections at the same time.

No turn on hotspot to provide WiFi to other device without turning off WiFi so that it will not consume my mobile data

If so it isn't possible to do it manually only trough apps, I suppose.
Try search Google for it if not successful try search in Google Play you might find something
If still not successful then I'm out of options
Edit: Unless you find out a way to create 2 different Wi-Fi's with the same connection. To do it you will need to go to your Internet Connection Settings trough your IP in any browser to find the IP go start than search CMD press ENTER then type Ipconfig and it should be under IPv4. Then copy your IP place it into browsers address bar pres enter. You will be provided to enter login and password. So type admin to login and admin to password. And from there you are all alone.

So, if you already have wifi, why do you need to use your phone as a hotspot, if one already exists? Or are you looking to use it as a repeater?

I think he wants to enable both the things just to increase his router range? Isn't it?
