Mirroring Thread (miracast/slimport/widi/chromecast/etc) - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone have any experience with any of the above methods for mirroring/'casting'?
I have the chromecast and I think we have all understand how that works and its limitations.
anyone bought any slimport or widi/miracast accessories/dongles? please share your setup/experiences,etc.
I have a 2012 samsung smart plasma that has a WiDi feature (60PM6700) but even though it recognizes the N5, it will not cast.

no slimport dongles?

widi is not miracast. I have a netgear ptv3000 that supports both. I get my n5 this week, we'll see if it works.

I'm curious about miracast as well, though I'm pretty sure it sucks in comparison to iOS Airplay Mirroring. Didn't have too much lag, and most videos or information I've seen about miracast show a pretty significant lag.
I bought a slimport off ebay. it was one of the cheapest ones I saw. Works great. Display is butter smooth, landscape fills the screen completely, which is nice because both tv and phone are 1080p. There seems to be little to no input lag between phone and screen. The average person wouldn't tell a difference. Also, the usb connector is nice as I just plug that end into the back of my tv, so it charges the phone while displaying on screen. I have been looking for a micro usb extension cable to connect to the slimport, as I have a small living space, and something like a 10-15ft cable could be hidden pretty well and I could use it from my couch to charge my phone as well as display on screen.
In case anyone was curious, I have a Samsung TV with "Allshare". Read up somewhere that its supposed to be some sort of Samsung customized Miracast, but alas, I could not get my phone to connect to it wirelessly.

Just tried it on a newer model Sony 50 inch TV with Miracast support and it didn't work
They really need to enforce the standard otherwise its useless...

Same here, 2012 Samsung smart TV and it recognizes my phone, but the phone doesn't recognize the TV.
I got a TV firmware update last night, and it didn't change the connection

I tried with a SONY R520 TV that is supposed to have Miracast screen mirroring, the phone and TV try to connect with each other but ultimately it says registration failed on the TV. The same thing occurs with a 2013 N7, and my dad's N4, all running KitKat. I wish I could have tested with my dad's N4 on Jellybean, but the update came the day before we ordered the TV...
I ordered a chinese Miracast adapter on ebay, will report back when it arrives.

Works just fine with my Netgear PVT 3000.

Oh jesus. That is the thing that completely turned me off to miracast probably forever. Seriously, a Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 both lagging like crazy sitting 10 inches away from that miracast box trying to stream 720p video. You have to be kidding me Netgear. Thats the best you got? I get that the problem is miracast in general, as its an absolute disaster of a "standard", but you can't advertise that your box is compatible with a device if its a disaster to use with that device.

Exactly my experience with the ptv3000 and a n4 then a n5.
So I ordered chromecasts, fingers crossed.

so some people are having good results with the PTV 3000 and some bad (amazon rating is 3 stars)?
All i want is one box/accessory to stream. it seems like none have good reviews.

Thats because "miracast" isn't a standard and its completely random if your device will be compatible with it or not. And then when it does work its random if it will be stable and if it will be able to stream video well. Its the worst. Save yourself the frustration and just get a slimport dongle.

I think the Dongle should support connection without DRM like for xperia tab. PTV has been reported to not work on Experia tab thread

yup - this certainly looks a lot like a mess!
Both the OP's TV and his phone are claimed on the official Miracast website to be compatible (links at the bottom of this page) yet clearly they lie.
Shame - I saw a demonstration video of miracast a while back and was a bit blown away - had been on the lookout for a dongle, my wife having an aversion to wires in the living room.
edit - you probably read this glowing review of miracast already - which happens to link to the same page I linked to above

Mine is 2012.

Landscape mode works great using Slimport. Not 100% sure if it's outputting 1080p though or if it's a scaling issue. There is very little noticeable lag, so I don't think it's converting to 720p. I'll test it later with a resolution app.

You need to have build in WiFi or dongle for it to work (I'll think)

you don't need wifi for miracast
you need it for DLNA for example or chromecast

wireless miracast screen mirroring with Netgear PTV 3000

Wireless miracast screen mirroring with netgear PTV3000 works fine with occasional stuttering with full HD videos.
See my upload https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxZKpg3o-dk&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Gaming there is a lag sometimes with stuttering but works fine usually for videos and photos and Google music and presentations etc. Great accessory. Just hope they enable this feature for screen mirroring for my nexus 7 too soon
for those who don't have the allshare cast hub or other wireless display solution check out sku 7511057 at bestbuy.com. Best Buy has a SMALL rocketfish miracast adapter that works with the s3, s4, note 2, and anything else miracast.
Sorry for no link, I can't post URLs yet.

This looks interesting in that it looks like it can be powered entirely from the TV. But I have had Rocketfish products before and they are not that great.
I'm especially interested in the range and latency, Someone shed some light on this.

I don't have any miracast dongle but my guess is that you have a debloated rom which removed all share cast or something relevant to the miracast function.
I have the PTV3000 and so far I have connected my S4, Xperia ZL, Note II, S3, and my Centrino laptop.
For connecting the Note II and S3, you have to use the Samsung AllShare Cast app. It usually takes 2-3 tries to get it to connect the first time, but when it does connect to the adapter the first time subsequent connections seem to happen right away. Also, the Note II and S3 seemed to lose all wifi when connected...any data pulled from the internet seemed to need mobile data (ie. streaming Youtube means using the mobile data to get the Youtube video, and wifi is used to stream to the tv). On the S4, this limitation does not exist as both wifi and miracast works fine. I guess the S4 has an additional antenna or there is something in the ac standard that allows simultaneous transmission and download.
The range is excellent...streaming works a good 50-60 feet away. There is lag no matter how close, so I would say its not ideal for gaming, but for just sharing our screen its great.
The S4 gets really, really hot as well...say goodbye to battery life with this of course.
If you get the PTV, make sure you update the firmware as a lot of bugs were present in the previous firmware. Works great now.

no my SGS4 is stock rom (GT-I9505) and the PTV3000 worked out of the box as shown in the video and later works with updated firmware from netgear website. I have not tried the beta firmware from google forums yet. The links to all this is in my youtube video description.
I have made other uploads of this working with my dell laptop and another video showing the latency. To note the latency, rather than watch the latency video continuously, you need to pause the video intermittently on youtube and see the timer difference between my phone and TV and you will note that latency is between 250-350milliseconds. Ok for videos and photos and angry birds etc but not for any time sensitive gaming. If interested in those videos then click the link on my tag line below which will take you to my uploads on youtube
I think if you are rooted then there are some HDCP errors from what i read. So i read elsewhere that if you do the triangle away procedure then may work. I havent bothered rooting as am fine with the device as is. Its for my wife as the phone is too small for me I am waiting for the Note 3 or something better

samsung galaxy s3 miracast working fine too via this adapter. No stuttering at all for videos but same lag of about 250 milliseconds but both audio and video is fine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xkh2xbeA-qk
powerpoint slides work fine too and using the allshare cast app on the S3 powerpoint slides are shown on the TV but phone shows both slide and extra notes at bottom which isnt shown on TV. so this will be useful for presentations
one difference i noted is that video play on the S4 screen and TV but on the S3 video plays only on TV and not the phone which just shows the allshare cast app

when you first connect the adapter to your TV and your S4 detects the adapter and then you click connect for the first time, then your TV should display a code which you need to enter on your S4 and then they should connect fine and the code wont be asked when they connect again. See if this helps. Did you input the right code displayed on your TV when the dongle is connected to your TV and powered and input signal on Tv shows the dongle output.
I dont think it asked me for a code? When I connect the rocketfish to my TV a rocketfish screen pops up with a setting button on the bottom left and some technical stuff like ssid and it says searching for peers then I flip on miracast on my s4 and it finds my TV and I connect. TV screen says connecting then connects then instead of my phone screen coming up some words come up and tells me my device doesnt support HDCP. I noticed that audio does come through like if I play YouTube I can hear the audio on my TV just no video Just a black screen.
I dunno if it's something in the rocketfish settings but I don't know how to get into the settings it doesn't come with a remote.

on my netgear i get this HDCP error too. First time i connected to netgear from my SGS4 the netgear input on the TV displayed a code to enter on my phone. my pone also showed a pop up box where i fed in the code. it hasnt asked me to give the code again.the same process happened when i connected my WiDi laptop to the netgear the first time. But even after feeding the code and accepting it, it still briefly brings up a HDCP error screen which is shown on my videos and then that error screen disappears and mirroring happens.
Have you rooted your phone and flashed a custom rom if so then you might be getting HDCP errors as far as i am aware and remedy is triangle away process as far as i am aware. Although i havent tried anything like that as havent needed to do it.
I'm not rooted. Thanks for the help I'll keep fooling with it see if I have any luck. It should work the lg og connects right away so maybe there's a setting or something I am overlooking.

The S4 works fine with Rocketfish's Miracast receiver. I bought one last night at Best Buy to try it out. There is no code needed, but you do need to follow the instructions provided. When connecting for the first time do the following:
1. Turn off TV.
2. Insert receiver into an available HDMI port.
3. Insert the microUSB to receiver and USB to an available USB port on the back of your TV. This is to supply power to the receiver.
4. Turn on your TV and select the input you chose for the receiver.
5. You should see the Rocketfish splash screen.
6. Enable display mirroring on your S4.
7. Hit the WPS button on the receiver.
Within a few seconds you should be connected and see your S4 screen mirrored onto your TV. I've tried the receiver in both my Samsung and Sony TV's and both connected fine without any issues.
It works ok for the most part, but I most likely will return it as it does have its flaws. If you still have trouble, remember to return to Best Buy within 15 days of purchase along with all original packaging and contents for a full refund.

I have experienced the HDCP error message one time, but it was for the AppleTV using AirPlay. The same symptoms occurred: audio goes through but no video. However, the issue was I had an HDMI cable that didn't support HDCP. After I swapped out the HDMI cable the issue went away.
However, since the Rocketfish receiver is plugged directly into your TV's HDMI port and not via an HDMI cable, then I would suspect that your TV may be using non-HDCP components or you have a defective HDMI port on your TV. Try plugging it into another HDMI port or test it out on another TV to see if you have the same problem.
I did everything you described still get the error message I posted. I purchased mine on ebay... the box mine Came in is different then your box maybe I purchased some knock off crap? On the instructions that came with it it says I need to go into settings>display>wireless display and select the SSID noted in step 1. Only problem is I have no idea how to get into the settings you can't navigate into the settings?

Mircasting

Anyone know of a top rated dongle to use for miracasting? I have a Sony tv, but it doesn't have mirascasting capabilities.
which series TV do you have the new W8 and W9 comes with screen mirroring built in.
The top rated "cheapest" dongle is by a company called Measy. check it on Amazon. See it in action here.

I have a 2007 Sony KDS60A3000. It's too old to have any fancy stuff, lol
I use a Roku Stick HDMI that I got free for beta testing. It works well as miracasting/mirroring dongle for my LG Smart TV, which ironically does not have built in Miracast support. The Roku Stick HDMI is I think $35 now, comes with remote and you can even use the Android app as a remote.
Most importantly the Roku supports the 5Ghz band as well which is important as I live in a 2.4Ghz congested neighborhood. Also microwaves and bluetooth can interfere with 2.4Ghz as well. Its well worth the money.

One last question about chromecast. I have seen where it can mirror apps and webpages, but what about videos saved on the phone itself, like downloaded movies and home movies/videos taken from the Z3 itself? Target has Chromecast for $22, heading out there after work to pick one up, IF IT CAN MIRROR/SCREEN Z3 personal videos.
Need help with chromecast
So I picked up Chromecast for $22 at Target today. It appears to work, with the exceptin that the screen on my phone is required to stay on. Is there a setting I am missing that allows my phone screen to be turned off, but still watch a video?
Nope. With Root/bootloader unlocking maybe.
I love the Chromecast, but no 5Ghz WiFi, which is bad, I get dropouts from interference from neighbors and espescially my microwave occasionally.
I personally dont have internet at home so I utilize the Belkin Miracast Adapter. Chromecast doesn't seem to work without a wireless router in the home.
Its a little bit pricey but it performs the best in terms of latency and doesn't require a wireless router to perform; all it needs is your phone and your TV. This adapter also has 5ghz support and works well with my Z3.
I had the Roku Streaming stick before I purchased this adapter and the Miracast option is available but it is very laggy and glitchy for me. Most likely since it is still in beta.
Hope this helps
I was a Roku Beta tester recently, its much better now. In Miracast there is always a minor lag though.
Fix to mirrorcasting w/ chromecast
So, I was able to fix the issue with my screen remaining on while mirrorcasting. I was irritated at the beginning because when I used showbox on my phone, the screen would remain on while casting to Chromecast. Also, when casting, you can't use your phone, due to casting.
Here's the fix and work around. Some may have already known this.. I downloaded an app called localcast (allcast works just the same). localcast acts like a server on your phone, so there is no mirroring (and you can turn your screen off and it still runs like a normal app), thus once the video starts, you are free to use your phone like you normally do. I also noticed the skipping of the video was eliminated when I stopped mirrorcasting and started using localcast!

1080P HDMI Output from S6

I've just found out my S6 doesn't support MHL I've tried MHL 2 and 3 adaptors and they don't work.
I don't have a Samsung smart tv and I don't have an allshare cast (which Samsung have discontinued)
How can I screen mirror please? Am i missing something?
Oh damn. I have to even tried my mhl
The manual just talks about 2015 Samsung TVs and doesn't say anything else I can see about tv-out.
I know they leave it off the s5 mini but on a flagship device?
I've spoken to Samsung, no MHL, no all share cast support. Basically their answer was buy a Samsung smart tv. Very poor show
I was able to mirror my screen to an amazon fire TV with a note 4, has that been taken out in the s6? Guess I should just try it huh
Please try it and let me know
You can cast a video or movie through video player. That's about it.
Other than thinking everyone who wants to screen mirror will buy a Samsung smart tv why would Samsung do this?
You said exactly why. But Chromecast is cheap and so many apps are supporting it these days, this is not an issue for me.
I can also confirm, doesnt work with samsungs own mhl cable, then i bought a microsofts miracast dongle, tries to connect but fails everytime, i think the only way to screen mirror with this thing is indeed to buy a samsung smart tv, but i went to best buy last night and the rep told me it doesnt work yet because the tvs need a firmware update, then i read it will work with upcoming K series tvs, asked a samsung rep when we will see them in the US and he said 2016, are u kidding me samsung? Im seriously considering returning this phone.
Samsung SideSync
SideSync lets me display my phone on my laptop which is connected to the TV. You can supposedly drag and drop files, but I haven't tried. I can rotate the display and control my S6 using my wireless mouse and keyboard. Fun playing a game on the big screen. You can even choose to keep the phone screen active in a side by side mode. Sound transmits so now I can play music over TV from phone. Not the perfect solution, but better than nothing. Still going to look into casting via other methods (xmbc or amazon fire tv stick).
I'm trying to get video out either via MHL or HDMI from my S6E to my Alpine x009 and no luck. My alpine just says device not supported. Chromecast needs wifi so I don't think I can get it to work....I was looking forward to being able to watch Uverse while I was sitting in my truck on a 9" screen. If anyone has any luck please let me know. I just bought a chromecast to see if I can mirror my S6 to it but haven't had time yet.
Wow.. I am completely shocked.
I finished installing kodi earlier with the plan of connecting my S6 to the tv in my room via MHL like Ive done on my previous Galaxy devices for years. I did not even notice the lack of MHL on the specs and not a single review I read before making the upgrade mentioned it either. I'm assuming this would be a hardware feature and not something a firmware update could enable so this is very very disappointing. I know people are saying that chromecast is the solution but in reality it's not, especially as KODI/XBMC won't ever officially support it and the work arounds to enable support are far from perfect. Guess I'll never be able to rely on just the one device like I hoped.. it's a shame.
The last few versions of chrome have been beta testing mirroring the screen is not perfect but may be of some help
Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk
The biggest thing was being able to mirror without WiFi which I think is what the newest version allows. No mhl or usb video out is ridiculous for a device that is $700-$1000 in my opinion.

Did you ever figure out how to transmit video from a S6E to an X009? Fighting that battle myself right now.

Any HDMI adapter for 6P?

hi,
Can 6P output video over USB-C?
Can generic USB C-type cable to HDMI be used?
Any other specific for 6P adapter can be used for HDMI wired output?
No, I don't need / want chromecast or miracast or etc wi-fi streaming.
thanks.

For the Pixel chromebook.
The 6P supports WiFi Direct, so I would suggest you go that route if at all possible. You may need to get a Miracast dongle for your flat panel display of projector.

During the reddit AMA they said it would not output hdmi. I also didn't think about this when ordering (i have an appradio hu as well)

I think because it's still USB 2.0 that it can't output via HDMI. On another note don't waste your time with a miracast dongle. I'm pretty sure Google dropped support for that to exclusively use Chromecast. IMHO I feel it's leaps and bounds better than miracast anyway and you can still mirror your phone

HDMI works just fine over USB2, it's MHL or SlimPort that extracts video/audio from phone microUSB port. I don't know details how it works, but that I use for my S3 with MHL adapter to feed HDMI input.
The specs say specifically WiFi Direct, which is what Miracast uses as the transport, so Miracast should work. It works well with my Nexus 7, and the Nexus 4, 5 and 10 work as well. The Motorola Nexus 6 did not support WiFi Direct. If Chromecast supports mirroring to the USB port of a flat panel or projector to display the output of the phone or tablet screen for PowerPoint, AutoCAD, etc, then great. At least in the past, that was not the case.

thats... not how chromecast works. receiving device needs something (chromecast, roku, fire stick) that supports the chromecast protocol (cast method). from there, you can mirror (cast) your device screen or chrome tab.
as far as using a miracast dongle goes, i believe it's the same principle as chromecast. you won't get display through the USB port of your device. the dongle has to connect through some video throughput (usually HDMI). most (if not all) display-only devices do not have the capability to accept display through a USB port.
I don't understand why it doesn't support hdmi output. The s6 doesn't either. I don't want use chromecast because i use my unlimited data plan to stream movies. That's only thing i'm jelly of the iphone right now.

what does having UDP and steaming movies have to do with CC? are you saying you want to steam movies from your phone to your device? there are apps that do this, including ES File Manager. if you're traveling, you'll need two devices to set up the CC to use your hotspot, but short of that, CC should work great for your needs.
everyone has different use case
for me I need that phone output video over HDMI input of my car radio (Appradio)
and I'd like to have it over cable
in my case streaming over wi-fi comes with annoying latency - that's delay between car touchscreen action and video display as reaction
for me it isn't about movie streaming, but GPS and other car related apps

This.
I thought I could live without root and ARUnchained so that Android Pay would work easily, and just get by with screen mirroring without touch interface on the head unit. Since Marshmallow, I haven't rooted and I've just been mirroring my N5 through SlimPort. I don't know that I can get by like this after being so used to full interface. And I imagine that the lag on Chromecast would be highly annoying. I'm quite disappointed there is no HDMI output on 6P, but I'm getting it anyway.

Oops, you are right. I said USB, but meant HDMI. For my Actiontec dongle, you use the USB port to power it, but the HDMI port for the video / audio.
I'll be honest... I see almost no lag Casting my N5 screen of a 1080p Youtube clip to Chromecast 2.
It actually surprised the hell out of me that the quality of the cast was much better than choosing the same video through the YouTube app for Chromecast

Crap! What do we do now? I also use ARUnchained with my AppRadio 3. Just got my 6P today.

I use the 6P via miracast to my AppRadio and the lag is non existant. The Nexus 5 struggled a bit but the 6P doesn't. This is using a Microsoft Wireless adapter.
Assuming you have supported the ARU developer, then join the Alpha group and he has a version that automates the connection process for Miracast / Chromecast. I have also posted in the ARUR thread how to get the screen to dim down to nothing.

Mainly because TV technology has moved on and the technology to stream is in most of those now. Very few phones will support MHL or Slimport going forwards, if any at all within a year.
I would not have bought the Nexus 6P if I'd known that it did not support HDMI out. No doubt about it.

Google Pixel (XL) Miracast

Does anyone know if either Pixel (XL) has Miracast built in? My Nexus 5 (2013) has Miracast and can cast to a wireless display. However, my Nexus 6P can not. I'm looking to finally use just one phone to connect to all my other devices (ie. TV, Spro2, PS4, and Computer monitor). I think it's sad I use my Nexus 5 (2013) just as much if not more than my Nexus 6P, being the newer phone. Hopefully if the Pixel has Miracast, I can have just one phone again. Someone PLEASE help me with your tech-savvy knowledge. :fingers-crossed:
Possible Miracast functionality
I came across this article that mentions a trick that enables Miracast support. I have not received my Pixel yet so I am unable to test. I too am interested to see if this works since I have a pico projector that uses Miracast.

I just looked at the directions. Will need root as build.prop edits are needed.
Sent from my sailfish using XDA Labs
I just went through that hack on my pixel xl adding the line to build.prop did indeed and the ability to check wiFi connect in cast settings and it actually shows that it's detecting the TV and connects but doesn't transfer video or audio hmmmm.
If anyone has successfully done this please let us know
Thanks ZR1
I have now tested this, and it does not work. It works as the last poster described. The "Enable Wireless Display" button does work now and you can pair it with a device. But once you attempt to connect to the paired device it is disconnected. Seems like it's missing some library or something.
I want to keep this thread going as I really need this feature to use in my Truck while in the back cabin. I have a Belkin Miracast Dongle and I like being able to send my movies from my phone to the TV. Help a trucker out! I'm pretty tech savy, and can grab logcats or whatever is required, message me and I'll be happy to test or gather any data for you.
Thanks in advance.
PS. Keep this thread going.
Waiting for a solution to this? I have Miracast in my car and can not cast to it
I really wish this gets resolved soon. I do impromptu powerpoint presentations and other seminars often, and I've been doing those just with my older phones and Miracast-supported TVs or projectors. Now I have to use the Microsoft WiFi Display Adaptor with the Pixel, which is fine except for those times my external monitors don't have HDMI port.
What's interesting is that I can project photos and videos from the Pixel to a Miracast TV without problem, using AllCast. However, I really need to project everything else, not just items from the gallery.

It is an app in the play store. I can cast to my Miracast Sony Bravia HDTV just fine. So, this app apparently does something that the built-in cast function doesn't.
Has anyone figured out how to get this to work? I am rooted, (XL by the way), changed the buildprop and rebooted, everything works fine, it trys to finish the pairing process for screen mirroring but nothing happens with the roku. I can screen mirror perfectly on my LG G3 so I know its not the roku, must be something with the XL. Any help wold be greatly appreciated.
I may be wrong here but my fire TV has mirroring and I searched and searched on mirroring Android phones and I read that after a certain version Google pulled the feature from the newer OTA updates. I've tried downloading apps also and nothin works.
It does but as far as I know it only works for google devices like the Chromecast. I've never been able to get it to mirror to my LG smart TV that has Miracast enabled.

Does the Microsoft display adaptor actually let you mirror successfully? If so, link which one?

I have the original adapter.
I also have this question. I am trying to mirror my screen into my 2016 Honda CR-V head unit with my Google Pixel XL.
