default setting cannot be remembered - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

it seems my Nexus 5 cannot remember any default settings such as default browser. I install Firefox. when I click any link, it prompts me to choose Chrome or Firefox. and then I choose Chrome and always. but it cannot remember my choice, next time it still prompts. my previous Android phone doesn't have this issue. Could someone help me on this issue?

Did u install another browser between the selection "Always Chrome" and the next test? Stock configuration?
Do you use a 3rd party app to clean the cache/history of your apps?

no, I don't...

Same here. Tried making MX Player the default for playing videos from the camcorder, but it wouldn't stick

It's really crap. I have different browsers for different reasons and wouldn't want to freeze any of them.

Mine too, and after trying everything I can think but still can't solve this problem, I flashed in cm 11 rom, the good thing is, some operations can be remembered, like opening a picture, but the browser chosen continue popping up again and again, no matter how many times I tap "Always". It's so annoying that I'm just thinking of change my phone

It is WORSE on the SGS4. On the Samsungs, after the pop up to choose a default app, it then pops up to say you can change the defaults by going into settings etc... but it says this (IDIOTIC) message every (FRIGGING) time you choose a default, and you do that again and again and again and again...
Personally this seems like an Android bug, or maybe a bug with Android phones that are rooted? It does not seem like a manufacturer specific issue... and yes, bloody annoying.
Mark.

So, I think its a problem with a specific app. I wiped my settings and just installed a few apps. Default app was remembered. I might just start removing apps one by one to see.

Hi
With all respect, I don't see how you deduce that one app is causing THE issue. Surely it could be an Android issue that occurs in certain apps, that one being just one of many? I have this in many apps and don't have geoop...
Mark.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

I deduced that 1 app is causing THE issue for ME. In truth, we are likely both right. Google probably changed something with KitKat that makes it possible for apps to break this functionality, possibly without even knowing it. I now have a problem with the dialer not saving, something I didn't have before. I'm sure if I traced it, a specific app would be to blame. But, I confirmed that GeoOp was causing this issue with regards to the browser default, and I did that by running a totally fresh install with only 3 apps installed, Chrome, Firefox and GeoOp. As soon as GeoOp is out of the equation, I can save the browser default again.

Yeah, but that might be one of many apps, and it may be a combination of apps... I've never used that app and get the open with requester with many apps, even google ones like Gmail, currents, etc...
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

My choices have all stuck. Is there some where in the options where you can change this later? Maybe that would help your situation.

Having the same issue here on my Nexus 5 and I don't have GeoOp so not sure what's causing it. I also have a Galaxy Tab Pro running 4.4 with most of the same apps and not having the default issue there. Both devices are rooted.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

happens all the time with me for dialer while selecting a missed call notification.!
even though i select the default dialer as "always" it still notifies to complete the action again when there is a missed call.. any fix for this ?

I've since completely reset my Nexus 5 and reinstalled everything from scratch, and the phone is still not remembering default app settings. Every time I click a number to dial through gmail or chrome, it asks me whether to complete action using Phone or Skype, even though every time I choose Phone and "Always". Same thing for opening web pages (Chrome and Dolphin), opening Instagram links (Instagram or Chrome), and anything else I have more than 1 app for.
My Nexus 5 is rooted using CF-Auto-Root. Is this an issue with rooted phones only? Or is it a sign of a hardware defect that I should be requesting warranty service for? Anyone gotten to the bottom of this?

Still no idea what is causing it? Android L seems to be remembering the default but it may just be luck. If there is any solution please tell me It is driving me crazy

I have this issue as well, on any rom. Currently using PA.

[APP] Note 8 MODE Switcher

Hello Note 8 users,
As a favor to a friend of mine, I made a MODE switcher app that allows the user to switch between the default PHABLET interface and the alternative TABLET interface. This app also allows the user to switch between an alternative Multiwindow mode as shown on the pictures below.
Requires: a rooted note 8 tablet with busybox installed (works for both odex and deodex).
1. For safety, make a backup.
2. Ensure you have busybox installed. If not, install busybox installer from the Play Store and use it to install busybox.
3. Install an alternative launcher like Apex, Nova, ADW, etc. just in case TW Launcher crashes when switching from one mode to another.
4. Download the app below and install. Launch and enjoy. Make sure you grant it root permission when asked.
DOWNLOAD
5. A THANKS would be nice or you could buy me a COFFEE.
NOTE: For those having issue with Play Store in tablet mode, the solution is to use the multi-dpi Play Store from the following THREAD.
CAUTION: Use this app at your own risk. I am not liable for any damage or loss due to use of this app.
You always surprise me ... how you get those ideas

Thank you so much - tablet mode great to switch to when using BT keyboard and mouse!
Thanks a lot for the app.
I am a rookie here and have a issue with this app.
My device is rooted and installed BusyBox pro for the first time.
Then, installed this app.
The mode switch works great, but Multiwindow Mode doesnt work.
it says "ERROR: Missing permission file."
Could someone tell me what I have done incorrectly?
Thanks in advance.

No doubts
You are the one who started it all. But where are you man? I guess, something is brewing
Do share when its ready, we all together can sip it
(app, build.prop and play store compatibility question deleted - but I don't think it's relevant any longer. Restored build.prop, reinstalled this app, now have no issues with play store visibility. However, it is useful to remember that play store can be impacted by build.prop issues - if you do see a visibility issue, a restore can be helpful.)
@chipwizz & @ianbbaa - glad to see you roaming around this thread. Did you guys bought a note 8 and leave me behind in the note 1 forum? I'll be with the note 1 for a longer time I suppose as I can't afford any new device at the moment.

Make sure you have "com.sec.feature.multiwindow.phone.xml" in /system/etc/permissions folder. That is the missing permission file.
This is a very cool app - but does it modify the build.prop file?
I ask because around the time I installed it, my build.prop file was changed (of course, I was making many changes at the time ) and this morning I noticed a ton of stuff in the Play store said I was not compatible. When I noticed the delta time on the build.prop I restored from a backup and now have normal play store visibility.

Yes, it changes one build.prop entry (ro.sf.lcd_density=177) to achieve tablet interface. Play Store may be an issue for some but the solution is to use the multi-dpi Play Store which you can download from HERE.
What was surprising to me was that after I reverted back to 'phablet mode' I was seeing GPS not loving me.
But this morning I reinstalled after redoing the build.prop and for now, at least, Play is working fine.
Thanks for the link to the play store that ought to hold up if I go back.
Samsung's done some weird stuff with their hardware buttons -- both Button Savior and the back button on the tablet style interface tend not to work very well or often when you try to "back" with them. I'd hoped to be able to disable those hardware buttons by being in tablet mode, but not yet.
I grabbed the key test app a bit back and the hardware and the soft keys do send the same codes, so Samsung must have written something in that grabs inputs on those lines and prioritizes it.
It 's reboot when calling or receiving call.
How to solve this?

Can you use call function without problem?
So I downloaded this morning and doesn't seem to be working. I know I am probably missing doing something simple but here is some background. Rooted with busy box, framaroot I , model 5110, I also have multi window manager already on here could that be the problem. when I go into the app and hit multi window mode it states need to reboot so I do than after it reboots nothing it is back to the normal mode. I am trying to get the cascading window mode. Any help would be appreciated.
Call off the hounds. after a few additional reboots. it seems to have decided to work. I will report back if i have any other unnecessary requests to make.. Thanks

Hidden menu in stock browser incl. change user agent

Please forgive me if this has already been posted, or if it's regarded as common knowledge. I couldn't find mention of this anywhere in the S4 forums, so I figured that it might not be widely known.
I was reading a post about a hidden debug menu in the stock browser for a different device, so I thought I would try it in the S4, and it works!
Open the browser.
In the url bar, type chrome://debug
It should say "This web page is not available". Ignore that message, but don't close the tab.
Then press menu and tap settings. You will see a new menu item: Debug.
In there, you will see a hidden menu of settings including, most interestingly, an option 'UAString' which lets you change the user agent ID which tells websites what browser you are using. In other words, you can set your browser to tell websites that you're using a desktop, or an iPhone, or a tablet, etc. Other browsers, like Dolphin or Boat Browser, have this option. You can use it to avoid getting mobile versions of websites by default, or to access certain features on websites only available to iPhone users.
Once again, I apologise if this is old news. Let me know if it is

[Q] Dropbox Camera Upload feature not working in background? Requires app open?

On my Galaxy S3 and S4, whenever I took a picture, it would immediately upload it to Dropbox using the camera upload feature in Dropbox.
I have the same settings on my Nexus 5, but it only seems to work when I open the Dropbox app. It does not happen automatically after I take a picture. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but it still seems to have the same issue.
Is this a Nexus 5 or Samsung thing or is something not working here? Can anyone else confirm that they are or are not having this issue?
Thanks!

Probably. KitKat can be a little aggressive with the memory management.
Can anyone say whether or not this was working properly on the Nexus 4? That would help determine if it's a Samsung thing or a Kit Kat thing.
Thanks for the responses so far! If I can get some more info I'll try contacting the dev.

Dont know how it would be a samsung thing. They are both made by LG, but I did not have any issues with my nexus 4 uploading automatically. It was on 4.2 and 4.3, I never used it on 4.4.
My last two phones were the Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4. I had instant camera upload on them so I am not sure if Dropbox is supposed to work the same on Nexus devices or if Samsung/Touchwiz has something else going on that helps it.
A good example is Facebook sync. It works on Touchwiz but not on the Nexus 5.
If the Nexus 4 never had instant camera upload I guess I can't expect it on the Nexus 5. I'm hoping that's not the case.

Dropbox camera sync works fine without me opening the app. I switched from a note 2. On the note2 the upload was almost instant.... On the n5 there is a few minutes delay on the sync.

Thanks - I checked my settings again as well. I have tried Wifi only and Wifi + Data, with no change. The size limit only shows when you set it to Wifi + Data and the only options I see are "Under 25 MB" and "All Files". The phone doesn't take any photos near 25 MB size so that should never be a problem.

Today it seems to be working properly. Perhaps it needed a reboot to reset the background services? There was a SuperSU update later yesterday that I rebooted for...
Can you guys test again, after installing the Dropbox update and rebooting, and see if it's working for you now?

Things that you can do:
1- Clear Data + Clear Cache + Force Stop (All can be done from App Info) then Restart app and see if it works.
2- Uninstall then install Dropbox again (reinstalling)
3- Clear Cache & Dalbvik Cache from the recovery
4- Flash a custom kernel(Franco Kernel)

Where is this? Via update? The image hasn't even been posted yet...i hope to god they addressed the multichannel audio pass through for ac3 and DTS, not to mention add mpeg2 hardware decoding
my nexus player auto updated itself. Haven't used it all day and when I just checked it 5.1 was already installed. Android phones/tablets usually require the user to approve, but it looks like android TV will auto update. Perhaps a notification is shown and after awhile if the user doesn't do anything, it auto updates?
Doesn't look like a lot is changed, from a user POV. One thing I did notice is a "restart" option in settings->about, which is nice. No more unplugging and plugging to reboot!

my nexus player auto updated itself.

I've noticed the same thing happens with the apps. They are just magically updated. No questions or manual intervention needed.

I am still waiting for update. I am not rooted.

That's because playstore is set to auto update apps by default. If you don't want that behaviour, change the setting.

Question for those on 5.1.
Does the bluetooth audio function now? Can you pair bt headset, or bluetooth stereo to it?
Note 4 ?
Anybody known if the root out there is ok for the new 5.1 update or is there a new file posted somewhere?
I believe the existing root still works as there wasn't a new one for my phone Nexus 6 when it went from 5.0.1 to 5.1
Perfect will give it a shot. Stuck into a minor issue in the meantime. Cant mount the cache arghhh. Factory image does not include a cache.img partition. Can I use the cache.img from another nexus device?

lolipop vs my picture option headache

Not really hoping for answers since there's not many info in google, but well, here it is. this message was number 27500 on an "ask any question" thread and seemed like everyone just skipped it due to the detailed info I wrote and decide to answer the short ones
Just getting a new android 5.0.2 running cyanogenOS. The only thread here in xda can be found when typing "andromax cyanogen" in search box.
Now, the problems.
- bbm will show "bbm has stopped responding" with an OK button when I click on "picture" option to change display picture. However, clicking on "sample picture" and camera icon will do its job fine and the display picture will change accordingly.
- xda app will show "xdamobile has stopped responding" with an OK button when I click on the camera icon below.
- fb lite app will show "app has stopped responding" with an OK and report button when I try to attach a picture when replying to a post. But, when I created a post, I am able to include a picture on the post.
- upon reboot, phone will get stuck on cyanogen logo, randomly
- also randomly, phone refuse to wake up no matter what after being left untouched for at least 1 hour. Have to physically remove the battery and replug to be able to turn on phone.
What I did:
- upon the 3rd day of getting phone, I decide that I want to get titanium backup of apps so I can save my internet quota. So I root using Kingroot 4.5 and install TB to found out that physical sdcard is now useless and that's why the phone has generous space (1.88gb system, 4.77gb internal/legacy/emulated).
- I then searched xda and found out to add an extra line in /system/etc/permissions/profile.xml to make physical sdcard usable again. Then I found out about those apps errors. I thought, it must be the extra line that makes the os messed up.
- so I did a factory reset via settings. Didn't seem to actually clean everything up because when I click on playstore it recognizes my email add right away. Then I reboot into recovery, did a wipe media, wipe cache, wipe data/factory reset and then turned phone off, removes battery and physical sdcard.
- upon reboot it said "android os is upgrading" and it counted from 1-116. Now I thought it truly is clean, as it asked me my gmail address for Google playstore. I DIDN'T ROOT THIS TIME. The first thing I install is bbm, then I reboot before setting up bbm. Guess what. Upon setting bbm (waiting for that circle to stop spinning), when it came to, my bbm pin stays the same and the problem of unable to change display picture using the "picture" option still stick.
- then I searched around to find a way to reflash the phone and after I did, well, everything brand new and clean. But the same problems with those apps PLUS the later that I mentioned.
Does anyone has a clue of what's going on? Or what to search for, to be blamed as the culprit(s)? The info on this phone is very limited almost none available.
I have tried to make a trouble ticket from bbm app but using chrome and uc browser, the form would just keep reloading without being sent. Dunno what's wrong. Will try tomorrow using a computer, although I doubt that they will provide a satisfactory answer (like when I still actually uses a bb device, they insisted that my os5 device would have to run bbm8 in order for them to run a diagnostic and help me, which actually destroys my bb, that's why I moved on to another android beside this oppo)
Thank you for the time to read. I hope that someone would shed some light for the badly confused me :banghead:
Can i know that which device are you running

Device giving problem is Haier G36C1H, known as AndromaxQ.
The only info available here in xda can be found when typing "andromax cyanogen" in search box. Google wise it will only give info on how to root which obviously a copy of info made available here in xda

Antutu Benchmark already gives almost the same info. I have a screenshot that I cannot post due to the problem.
Existed from day 1? Yes for bbm. Not sure about this xda mobile app as I was focused on "curing" bbm.
Well since you insisted, I took pictures of antutu info from the problem device. Let me edit some info and post the pics asap
