A question for those who have a European Nexus 5... - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a European Nexus 5 bought from the UK Google store. On the back the model of my phone is stated as the D821. My LTE connection is not working. I entered the service menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and when I select 'Select Radio Band' I only get 'USA band' as an option. Did LG put the wrong motherboard in my phone? Do you guys also have 'US band' as your only option. I called Orange ten times already and they say that everything is ok on their side. Any ideas?

That code takes me to testing menu. I cannot specifically see an option to "select radio band"

Just a little FYI, with the hope it will help you. I also have a D821 (bought on the French Play Store), with Orange FR as my carrier. "USA band" is also the only option I have but LTE worked fine when I tried it (I could not get more than 20 Mb/s, but I didn't try in different locations when I was in an LTE-covered area). I should also mention that I changed my SIM card to a new one when I got the Nexus 5. Good luck!

Not sure if Orange FR are the same as EE in the UK (Orange UK + T-Mobile UK combined), but their LTE is limited to 20Mb/s

Well I am in Poland. Orange just updated their network. My download with 3g is 20 mb/s. Was hoping for 50 mb/s like on the other LTE networks here.

Same here : bought it from french play store, my carrier is SFR (RED) and I can only see "USA Band"

That's also what I thought in the first place, but according to my SLA, my bandwidth is only capped when I reach my fair-use limit of 3 Gb. I didn't expect to hit the theoretical 150 Mb/s "rev limiter", but I have seen some Orange users saying they had an average of 30 Mb/s.

Just bought a sim from a competing network. 56 mb/s down 25 mb/s up. The problem lies with Orange.

i just ordered one from china. i hope it will work here in europe.

Here in Germany most (or all?) operators limit LTE-Speed depending on which contract you signed with them. I haven't run a speed test but my contract is limited to about 20 Mbit/s.

I cannot even get in "select radio band", it says "the process com.android.phone has stopped.
By the way, I got the D820 and we don't have LTE over here yet, but do you guys think D820 LTE will/should work in Europe (Germany/Italy/France...)?

Hi,
Old thread i see but one of our forum user have changed with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.snclabs.radioswitcher&hl=pl this option to USA Band on D821 and now he can't use 2G/3G, only LTE.
Anything another than reflash ROM will help?
I've searched about this but without luck.
Thanks.

Maybe someone?

[Q] LTE

Hey guys,
I'm hoping someone can help me because 3 hours later, 2 Google Play representatives and 3 online chat customer service O2 workers couldn't help me out.
I have a Nexus 5 and I'm on O2 here in Berlin, Germany. My Network Mode is switched to "4G" and my APN (as per another post) is correct. The plan is an activated LTE and the coverage in my neighbourhood is perfect according to the guy at O2.
I still don't seem to be getting LTE on my phone. Neither the LTE logo above the signal bars, nor the speeds (supposedly 50 Mbps).
Thanks.

Tried removing and reinserting the simcard? Or go to settings/mobile network and change from LTE to 3G and after that go back to LTE and reboot.

Just removed SIM, asked me to restart the phone...still on "H".
Every time I switch the Network Mode from 3G to 4G it automatically changes the APN to another option.

So I visited the O2 shop and the guy had absolutely NO idea what to do. He barely even knew what the Nexus 5 was!
He first thought it was a SIM issue but since the SIM is only 2 months old, it's 100% LTE compatible.
One more try with the online chat help and he said my area had a weak LTE signal and I should go somewhere else and try it.
I haven't done that yet but will try later today.

So apparently they're setting up a tower next to my apartment on the exact same day I'm moving out. -_- I've been frustrated all day trying to get this to work. I'll travel to one of the upscale areas now and see if it works. I don't need 4G at home anyway, it's only for when I'm out.
Will be back with updates later tonight.

So apparently the problem was the coverage in my area. The more heavily populated and "cooler" parts of Berlin have a fully functional super fast LTE.

Droid's GSM/UMTS reception

Question for all people running Droids (Mini) on GSM networks. How is your reception? I have my Droid on my desk and the phone is saying 50% signal strength. My nokia next to it, on the same carrier is 100%. In my garage my nokia has a signal, my droid hasn't.
settings says UMTS = -90 dBm
Is this normal?

Europe... When I turn data ON, then the settings says GSM signal about 80%, but notice the icon on top right corner is still small. Screenshot attached.
Very sad about this. I am living in the middle of the capital city, all phones I have ever had had 100% signal here.
I´m having the same issue with my droid maxx in Sweden
My mini is suffering the same deal, one bar almost all the time here in Sacramento with aio.
Thanks a lot for your feedback. I have investigated a bit and found this. It was confusing for me that UMTS and GSM was switching during data access so try this:
settings > more > mobile networks > network mode - here I had GLOBAL, but I changed to LTE/GSM/UMTS. If you do that, new options will be available in mobile networks menu. Here:
select network > GSM only
Huray, 100% signal strength!
I have no deep knowledge of this, but it seems that the phone is by default in UMTS mode when it has crappy reception. This could be because of the design of the phone, or because this is a new technology and the carriers network sux in UMTS. My nokia has no UMTS capability and is in GSM mode, so thats probably the reason why it was OK and Droid was KO.
Only problem with this is that you will probably have slower data connection. But you can experiment with this and switch to UMTS any time.
It would be great if somebody with deeper knowledge of this participate. Who knows what the android icon shows and how the switching is done.

I have just inserted a nano SIM on my Droid Maxx and guess what.
The network is seen, but registration does not get through.
So, I tried another nano SIM (from another provider). The data works fine, but calls cannot be made.
So, is the Verizon phone locked to the carrier?
I am trying to use the phone outside India and the carrier bands is not an issue.
I see two local carriers right now, but the registration process takes forever and does not complete.
Any ideas?
it shouldn't be locked. Have you checked the settings I wrote about? I don't know what type of network you have in India. Or check your provider's bands, what type of network it has and check with your phone settings.
Many people on XDA proved that these phones work on GSM networks.
To all:check this:

WTF. I have tried this, I found a similar line but it doesn't help.

Well, I have looked at those settings. If I switch to anything other than Global mode, after a few seconds, I get a message that there is no network found or something like that. It prompts me to switch back to Global mode. Even if I cancel that and try selecting GSM or UMTS, there is no real difference. I don't see any network. With my earlier cut SIM, at least I was able to see the network.
My cut SIM is now with an adapter inside my normal phone where it works flawlessly. So there is nothing wrong with the nano SIM as well.
OK so I take back that my nokia hasn't 3G. It has and the signal is full. So it is the DROID!
I tried modifying build.prop with no results. Also entered the testmenu and the signal strength here is the same as in settings menu.
I am frustrated.

[Q] F350S on AT&T in Ohio No 3g/LTE

I've been scouring the internet trying to find a solution. I've been wanting this for a while. I did my research to figure out which model of the G pro2 worked with AT&T. It arrives and now nothing. I'm only getting G not 3g or LTE. I am a bit new to smart phones. I've tried everything I can think of. Am I using the wrong apn settings? Is there something in the band selection menu I'm missing. I'm at a complete loss what am I doing wrong?
In Dialer 5754#*350# and activate your Bands or 5457#*350#
Still no dice
I've gone into the menu and specifically selected the required bands but still not dice. I went into the lte band selection menu. Is there another menu I should go into?

I have yet to root my phone I am a bit of a newb when it comes to things like this. I do plan on rooting it and giving it a Skin that has a lot more english. I have done this I selected bands 17 and 5 for lte and 850, 1900 for wcdma and gsm. In the Band Selection Menu. Should I be doing anything with WCDMA Channel, LTE Channel, WCDMA Security, RAT mode, RRC Version, SMS MO Domain, Service Domain, any specific APN setting what is it on your wife's phone, EF file edit, HSPDA category, HSUPA category, GCF Test, OEM RAD Settings, SKT Auto Test, IRS Setting, CA Setting, LTE 3GPP Rel. VER. or anything else I am missing?
I've determined that my phone is a very good fake
IDK if this is real issue but if some does have this problem and comes up with a solution. Please post it here I was beyond frustrated and hope this problem can be solved for someone.
Try going back to 4.4 and using LTE
Try taking your phone to an AT&T store and explain it to them. They will install a new SIM card and associate it with your IMEI #. Then you will have LTE!

I'm sitting in front of a Tmo store waiting for them to open and see where that goes. Hey guys how's battery life with this device. For what ever reason when I did put a Tmo sim in this phone it got only 3g now the chip was a nano from my nexus 6 using a quality adapter but holy crap I've never seen a phone eat a better like Godzilla. Hell it killed the device in like 3hrs. Although when removing the sim it seems to go normal using just WiFi connection. Very strange device behavior. Does this phone have bad battery life in its normal state? Since I am a huge "Big Screen" fanatic I would probably just get the extended battery from the Japan guys on amazon. Your thoughts?

Which band is missing on the N920T from the N920A?

I'm having a hard time finding a definitive answer about which LTE band I'll lose using the tmobile variant on att.
I don't think any, I think both are identical. I am using the N920T with AT&t. I would suggest you consider using DarthStalkers ROM, he was able to pull the AT&T carrier files.
The N920T & A are the same. If you had bought the N920I you might lose bands.
Does anyone know where I can get a band 12 coverage map? I can only find the LTE coverage map which doesn't specify if band 12 is used there

17 and 30 (I don't think the 920t's band 12 will work with AT&T's B17 - even though 12 is a subset of 17 (or do I have that backwards?) Possibly 29 (downlink only for AT&T) - but there's very little documentation on B29, so I'm not sure if the N920A supports it or not.

Band 29 is rarely used by AT&T (only as a downlink in heavily congested areas.) This shouldn't be a problem.
Band 30 (WCS band) is something AT&T _just_ started deploying, but I've never seen it in actual use. In fact, until very recently, none of AT&T's own phones supported it. B30 is really of limited value for general use due to it's propagation (or lack thereof.) Like 29, its probably only used as a supplement to other bands. I wouldn't worry about B30.
B17, however, is a Big Deal for AT&T. That's AT&T's primary "lower frequency" LTE band. Because of the low frequency, it has excellent propagation (meaning it moves farther and through trees, buildings, etc.) They use this band to cover large geographical areas with minimal towers. If you will be using your phone in a non-urban area, B17 is almost essential for AT&T. (My phone spends the majority of the time at my home on B17.)
I haven't heard of anyone with a TMO Note 5 device (without explicit B17 support) attaching to AT&T's B17, but that doesn't mean it won't work. However, Unless someone confirms B17 functionality on the n290T from actual use (and not just what they think), I'd suggest assuming that it won't work.

An informative post if ever there was one indeed.
What app do you use to determine which hand your phone is connected thru? I have found this app "LTE discovery", and it seems my att note 3 stays connected to 5 mostly, or 4 for lte. But then for GSM is doesn't list a band, but appears connected. On her t-mobile note 4 connected to att, she stays on 5, but the GSM doesn't appear to be connected to anything..
We will be almost exclusively in the middle of a city, but as with anything that could change or in the event of a road trip..
Is there a place I can sit and study this information? Perhaps a website with all of this data? Or do you happen to work in the field?
In a sea of noobs, an informed person is a real diamond in the rough - I appreciate your time.

Is that with "lte discovery" that she doesn't appear to have any GSM side connection? She most likely does, as that's where voice calls will take place...

Google. Then google some more. If you run out of pages from google, use another search engine. All the information is readily available - it just takes time to find it all.

That's a good app to use. I also use my phone's diagnostic menu's, but I doubt AT&T left those enabled on the 'a' variant.

so i got through all the hoops.. don't have LTE ;-(
it connects to band 4 or 5 when i first come out of airplane mode, but it jumps right back off. stuck on 4g. called at&t for an hour, they said initially it wasn't provisioned on my sim card, but then afterwards they determined it was a problem on my end, walked my thru APN settings and then ended the call.. still no LTE.
do you have an opinion of what i could do?

Quoting me in a thread was enough... didn't have to also PM me...
@TEKHD has a firmware that might work for you. Check it out over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...h6-tekxodus-n5-urv1-00-00-lollipop-5-t3201869
He has apparently provided a mechanism that is working for other AT&T users... (probably via loading the AT&T RIL libs.)
I haven't tried this (and I don't even have a 't' variant myself.) On the other hand, a quick search of that thread seems to show that other people are having successes with AT&T sim's on 't' variant devices.
Good luck!
Gary
sorry about the double.
after a precursory examination, idon't see exactly what you are talking about in his thread..
is it a download?

i searched all 114 pages and didn't find reference to any of that.. now i know why search provided no results; there weren't any!
so i need to find the att ril libraries. how will i ever find that.

Maybe that was the wrong firmware... it's something in the TMO dev section. Please search.

i've searched the entire tmo dev section for term "at&t" and there are sparse hits; there is some conversation about CSC for a guy in canada getting his VoLTE working, but nothing on att.

Apparently, you already found it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...on-1-aroma-t3212091/post63516726#post63516726
This has AT&T RIL's in the update.zip, and from a quick look at the first post in that thread, they are installed based on an aroma installer. Others in that thread claim it works for them. You're using a TMO device on ATT, so you have to expect some level of incompatibility. There are AT&T LTE bands that the TMO device simply doesn't support. It doesn't matter what happens with your Note 4. Different device and different modem.
So, if you want to use a TMO device on ATT, you'll have to make some sacrifices. Most people will find the sacrifices are less drastic using an international version of the phone. For some reason, US carriers go out of their way to ensure their devices are incompatible with each other.

ok this is where i started, by flashing the ATT option for this rom. but that doesn't solve the problem. i'm in the process of clean flashing the tmobile choice like he suggested.
thanks for all your help.
i'm afraid this isn't going to work either. i realize the wife's note 4 may have different hardware, and isn't a good reference.
i can see the thing connect to band 5, then band 4, lte .. but it's in "emergency calls only" mode, then it gives up on that, connects to HSUPA or HSPA+ and that's the last of an LTE connection.
i feel like it would connect if it could, and that i'm having a software issue.
problem solved guys sorry for the large headache..
Solution:
AT&T did not recognize my IMEI as being LTE capable. Because of that, they decline to allow my phone to connect to LTE. My phone would connect to an LTE tower (as in the screen shots a few pages back), but wouldn't receive anything back from AT&T, so it would say "emergency calls only" and then give up after about 10 seconds, and then never go back. Crap data all around at this time.
What you'll need to do is walk into an AT&T store, take a picture of the IMEI off an LTE phone, and then call in and change your IMEI to the phone you found. This will cause the system to recognize your phone as LTE capable, and like magic, you'll have LTE.
I can confirm that I have a tmobile branded unit that attaches to band 17. It isn't as frequently as on my note 4, I'm generally on band 2. With that said I've had virtually no trouble with service. I was initially worried about the b17 issue, but it hasn't seemed to make any difference.

Does it attach to band 17 on AT&T or t-mobile?

Using the EU Version in the US

I'm considering buying the European version of the xz premium for use in the US, since it comes with the fingerprint reader already enabled, and is about $100 USD cheaper. However, I've seen some people raise concern over the cell reception when running the European firmware. I'm wondering if anybody knows if this could be due to the European firmware not matching the physical bands included on the U.S. device (of if that's even a thing), and also if that could be somewhat solved by just getting it straight from Europe. Is there anybody that has the European version that could speak to the cell reception quality in the United States?
If you use the European device in the US, you also have to change the settings for the used bands.
There is an option to change used frequencies in *#*#4636#*#*. Guess that would make a difference since the hardware is always the same.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. I didn't know that they all had the same physical bands
You don't need to change anything.
When you pop in US sim, all bands are available and appropriate LTE CA combinations are loaded.
3G calling will work, but you will miss out on VoLTE with euro region firmware.
Bought my XZP from Clove UK.. Using it in NYC.. No probs with reception.. No need to change anything, all I did was pop in the sim card, working great ?
I recommend to change the radio configuration to "United States" just in case.
I just popped in my AT&T sim and no problems. I did set the bands to the United States...makes no difference as everything works the same.
UK model G8141 here in US. I just put my AT&T sim and got LTE and great connection right away. No worries.
I ordered mine from Clove as well, and while it does seem to work just fine with my AT&T SIM, I always have only 0-2 bars of signal and the phone always shows 4G/4G+ instead of LTE. Anyone else have this issue? I've been trying to do some digging to see if perhaps there is some setting that I need to adjust such as the APN used or something to get better signal strength. Thoughts?

First of all, 4G in the UK is the same as LTE in the United States, so no issue there.
Do not look at the bars as this can be manipulated by the programmers. To see how strong your signal really is you need to go to settings > about phone > status > SIM status. The lower the number the better. I am fairly certain that if you DO NOT use 4G you will get a stronger signal which may be perfectly fine unless you need a real fast signal. By not using 4G you will be using 3G. Hope this helps! :good:

Oh good. I was wondering about whether or not the UK actually called it LTE like we do here.
My average signal strength seems to be -119dbm 99asu pretty much regardless of where I am in my city. It just seems weird since my Huawei Mate 9 got consistently better signal than this in the same market, with the same SIM, supporting the same frequencies. Just makes me wonder if there's something I'm missing or if I should try getting a new SIM from AT&T.

I doubt that a new SIM will help anything. Those numbers are quite high. Too high in my opinion. If you do not stream videos or something that needs very fast LTE signals, then I would choose to not use 4G. You should get a much lower number (better signal) and everything will still work just fine.

Have you tried re-provisioning the phone? Maybe have it pull down the settings and reboot. I got mine from clove and am on AT&T as well... Pulled the sim out of my SGS6 and everything seems to have worked perfectly.
How are your speedtest results?

You mean having it download mms and Internet settings, then reboot? I've done that a couple times but I never rebooted after doing it. I did notice that in my APN settings, there are two for AT&T and I can't find an answer as to which one to use. One is called "phone" and the other is "nxtgenphone".
My download speeds aren't terrible but they aren't super amazing either. Last I checked it was 35mbps down and about 5mbps up. I'll try reprovisioning and restarting and see what happens. It just sucks not ever having more than 2 bars no matter where I am.
Edit: just tried downloading mms and Internet settings again but it didn't help. Maybe I should reset my network settings to default and try again just in case?

Mine is set to nxtgenphone. I really wouldn't focus on the bars. My z3 was also from the UK and did the same thing. You can check under the diagnostics settings screen to see what your data connection is or try doing the magic combo number to see what bands you're set to.
Is there anyone with a phone on the same carrier that would pull up their signal strength info so you can compare the actual numbers?

Maybe someone can give me some but others have told me that averaging -119dbm 95asu is a pretty weak signal.
Others have said I shouldn't need to change any settings in the hidden phone menu, but I set it to United States just to be safe. I didn't mess with any network settings in there aside from that.
Edit: checked radio band setting and set it to United States. Network preferred type is set to LTE/UMTS auto (PRL). Not sure if I need to change any of these settings or not.

Ouch, yeah... that is what my signal is like when I'm in the office and the repeater is down. I can't send/receive texts most of the time.

In your APN settings for nextgenphone, is the APN protocol set to IPv4/6 or just IPv4?

Whenever I test it in the hidden menu the IPv6 test always fails. Even AT&T's official documentation says not to use the IPv6 but I'm not sure what to believe since the downloaded settings have it enabled.
