Hi! I recently upgraded to CM11 alpha build from CM10 and I must say that almost everything is perfect. But I have been having one problem. I can't seem to install APK files. I downloaded AdBlock Plus and when I tapped on the download to install it, it came up with an error, "Parse Error. There was a problem parsing the package." I know that CM11 is an alpha build and stuff, and that it most likely is due to a glitch with that, (so don't yell at me), but I was just wondering if anyone knew a quick answer to this problem. I have tried many different APK's even those that don't require root. All get the same error. I know it's not a KitKat issue because I have a friend with a Nexus 5 who is running AdBlock Plus fine. It's probably a CM11 error, but all the same I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about it.
Thanks in advance!
P.S. I have already spent an hour or more on Google looking for a solution and have found none that work. Common ones are "Enable unknown sources" and "Get the latest version" both of which I have done and don't work.

It is definitely fixed, but there has not been a release with the fix yet. The workaround is to use a file manager (the built in CM one will work) to copy the apk to somewhere like /data, set the permissions to rw-r--r--, and install from there, then delete the apk.

Thanks! I moved it to /data and set perms and it worked just like you said. Huge kudos. Will look forward to it being easier in next update.
Glad I could help. I believe it was mentioned in the CM11.0 Alpha General Discussion thread as well.

hey all
I have an Evo and my buddy just got the Inspire. One big thing I noticed is there is no option to enable installing APKs from unknown sources. Ive checked every setting menu and it is nowhere to be seen!
Any info on this? I found a desktop work around, but his swype beta wont work with the desktop workaround.
Thanks!
Att block this, use sideloading or root the phone. If u get the right swype version, it will work with sideload.
the sideloading only got me the installer, but then the installer needs to download the rest of it, and i cant due to the unknown sources. thats really my (well HIS) only problem. i get the installer o there but then cant do **** with it

I had the same problem on my Inspire, but this thread has the solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6798357
Since you already have the installer on there (like I did), you just need to follow the instructions in that thread from when you get the blocked install error.
Good luck!
Sideload Wonder Machine is working perfectly for me. Make sure to follow the steps exactly. The only thing I had to do was update my .net framework to the newest version.
Sideload here on XDA
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943174
so i did get it working and heres how. sideloaded the installer, then sideloaded a backup of MY swype to the phone and tried to install it. it didnt like mine because it wasnt on his license, so i hit get license, the phone kinda freaked out a bit, but i restarted and now it works like a dream no issues. thanks yall, all it took was a little inginuity and 3rd party software hehehe
For those who dont know, there is a new updated S-voice out that is currently working on most devices. I'm sure it'll be patched soon as well, and the need to change the build.prop will arise again. In the meantime, this one DOES work
http://www.mediafire.com/?fp04n29phdzeram
Move to system/app, install, enjoy.
When was it updated? I got the download from the original thread yesterday afternoon.
How is it different to skyvi?

This was updated earlier today. Many users were having trouble with the previous build after Samsung blocked access to the application from other devices.

I'm getting Force Close every time I tell it to do something that app oriented, I'm assuming it's looking for Samsung applications? I fixed permissions with in root explorer , is there something else I'm missing. Still think its kinda pointless lol. NVM some things work some dont, I sent myself a text but cannot set an alarm lol. this helped things though.

I haven't a clue then lol, tried that as well, with no luck.
I copied that .so file from the .apk into the lib folder and it works now. It appears the only time that the app FC itself is when it tries to launch another app. I'm guessing probably because it is trying to look for the Samsung app.

where do I find the "systems/app" folder that you mentioned? I'm on a Mac and using the USB Mass Storage, but I don't see the systems folder.
any help will be appreciated.
You're going to need to use ADB with cmd line to push it as far as I know or have root enabled file explorer like ROM Toolbox and you will see system when you're in it, this app never worked when I pushed it to system for me just installed it like a normal app and rebooted phone

The Google Now Installer/Restorer v1.1
Purpose
There have been a lot of users with issues installing and uninstalling Google Now for ICS. This is my solution for those users.
This is only an installer for the many different variations of Google Now that were created in this news worthy thread: The Google Now for ICS Project
This installer allow user of different types of roms and devices to quickly install Google Now to see if it works for them and if it does not, it allows these users to restore their original Google Search.
This thread is not and will not be about issues with specific modded Google Now apks, go here: The Google Now for ICS Project for that. I have no problem incorporating new apks into the installer. But I will not attempt to deal with issues outside of the installer.
Testing(Green = working, Red = not working)
(Need more people to test as many different devices, roms, and recoveries)
Devices
HTC EVO 3D
HTC EVO 4g LTE
Roms
OTA_Shooter_ICS_35_S_Sprint_WWE_2.89.651.2-2.17.651.5
Tranquility rls1b
Recoveries
CWM 5.0.2.0
TWRP s-on
So if you experience any issues, I will attempt to help, but understand that I if you are not setup the exact same, I may not know what is wrong.
Touch recovery is not active in this aroma installer, so use up and down to make a selection and the power button to confirm the selection.
Requirements
Rooted
ICS
CWM (only recovery tested, others may work, you let me know)
Instructions(should already know this, but here you go)
1. Transfer .zip to the root of your sd card
2. Boot into recovery
3. Select "install zip from sdcard"
4. Select "choose zip from sdcard"
5. Select "GoogleNowforICSInstaller_v1.0.zip"
6. Select "Install GoogleNowforICSInstaller_v1.0.zip"
Once the installer is up, the rest should be self explanatory, if not just follow the prompts.
I hope this helps someone.

I havent been following google now lately, but it seems that you're using stock rooted ics on evo where this works. is this also true for touchwiz phones?
will it work on stock rooted samsung?
Just checked it out on my HTC EVO 4g LTE running tranquility rls1b and TWRP s-on, works great back and forth. Thanks!

edit: there may be an issue with the Installer not finding the original Google Search apk, someone posted this and basically it states that you may have a some extra characters at the end of the apk.

I don't think it has anything to do with sense or touchwiz, the modified Google Now was modded for AOSP, which doesn't have either, but has worked on HTC and Samsung.

Since it won’t let me post to the forum I thought I would just do it this way. On my Verizon S3 I’m rooted, unlocked, OTA kernel, running a stockish rom (cleanrom) and CMW 6.0.1.2. The installer said it worked but it broke Google search. In the installer it said everything was fine but nope. I went to do the restore and it said it couldn’t find the backup so I went with the one provided and that worked fine. When setting up I chose the first one which I think was v7 for arm7. If I chose wrong I’ll try again but otherwise I’ll just wait for an updated version. Unlike others I’m in no hurry and was just testing it out on my phone. If you want more info I can try to install it again and try to provide whatever you might need or want.

What do you mean by it broke Google Search (what were the indications that it did not work)?

How much space does it state that you have free in the /system directory?
It would seem that you don't have enough space in your /system directory of your internal memory.
One thing to try to see if this is the case, when you do it manually, don't modify or add any files to /system/usr/srec/ directory
larva_pro said:

Yes I have that GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk in /system/app and yes it is without the _usa after it. On the line under it it has the odex version. Then the Google search widget apk and odex. It is this way with before and after I try to install.
Just tried it again choosing mikeyxda v7 it says created backup ok and return status 0. Google now installed return status 0 once the phone boots up it says “unfortunately, Google search has stopped”. I also get that message no matter how i try to search or tap on the google app it puts on it. Double checked the permissions from the main thread and all permissions are set right, if that helps. Went to restore and it says I never backed it up but I can use the generic one which I select and get again return status 0 for everything and once the phone comes back up Google search works just fine again. Hope this helps.

That's good to know. I see that the problem has to do with your system being odexed.
The reason it FCs is because when replacing the Google Search apk there is no matching modified odex.
This is modified for deodexed roms.
Check on this thread and ask about a modified odexed velvet.apk and velvet.odex

I am unable to flash the cm10 rom on my tf300t using TWRP 2.3.3.0. Most forums i read have cwm, but I am having some other issues with cwm so i have to use TWRP. The error is status 7, see attachment below. (I have already verified and md5 is alright)
Any help or pointers are appreciated.

the screenshot says no MD5 file is found. Not saying that is your issue, but just an observation since you said you checked it.
Also, it appears the zip file is inside a directory? try moving it to the root of the SD card. sometimes the paths for various functions of the flash assume that you are operating out of the root directory on the SD card.

Please see the line assert failed: getprop("
If you are using a tf300t then your error is in your build.prop file. It does not identify your unit as such.
The file you are trying to flash is the first cm10 download for the JB bootloader. I don't believe you will be pleased with that version.
If you still want to use it you will need to edit your zip to remove the asserts!

Why do you say I would not be pleased with that version? As per http://get.cm/?device=tf300t it seems to have been released on 13-Nov. I was looking for a stable CM10 and that is the most stable I found. Also why does it not identify my unit? Is that an issue with the TWRP? FYI -- TWRP was the first recovery I had flashed, but since it gave status 7 error, I flashed CWM. CWM gave me some MBR signature errors, and it was completely useless, since it would not even take backup of my ROM, so I again moved back to TWRP. Thanks by the way.

That cm10 was released prior to the first cm10 nightly. If I remember correctly it didn't support gps and may not have supported wifi. It was placed in stable because it couldn't be released in nightlies at that point.
The md5 failure is normal if you don't have a properly named md5 file in the same directory as the zip and have the option set to use it.

Thanks. So I guess that CM10 was not useful to me anyway, I was looking for a stable and complete ROM. I think I will then try something else, maybe superclean, have read that it is stable too. Personally I do not like stock, instead prefer AOKP or CMs but I guess I have no choice then. Any other ROM that you had recommend? (stable + complete)?
About md5, thanks for that, I wasnt really worried about md5, since I had verified it already (before flashing).

I know it says nightly but the recent cm10.1 releases are stable and everything I have used works properly. I don't have a dock so I can't address that. It is a good daily driver for my use.
Some people are bothered by having a 0 directory on the internal sdcard for the first user. Yes it is multi-user. Android 4.2.

Good Luck!
I updated my phone to4.4.1 today and ever since I haven't been able to open my music player 'Mixzing'. When I click on the App icon it goes to a black screen momentarily then back to the home screen without starting the app (this is the only app that it happens on)

Any ideas?

Same here, no solution yet.
I made a modded version of the mixzing app to get it to launch for me:
All I did was replace the following in com.mixzing.android.SdCardHandler.getCardId()
Code:
invoke-static {v10}, Landroid/os/FileUtils;->getFatVolumeId(Ljava/lang/String;)I
move-result v4
with
Code:
const/16 v4, 0xBEEF
You should use your own random number instead of BEEF since this effectively means that you are always returning the same value for getFatVolumeId as far as the app is concerned.
Can you explain this to the developer of MixZing? So they can update the original App.
Would be nice, thanks.

They have said that they know about it. They were just taking too long for my taste, so I did it myself instead.
If you can't wait I can post my modded version if you want, but I highly recommend doing the mod yourself rather than simply trusting that my posted version does not contain any malware. It's just a good habit to get into IMO.
Never modded an App. But I'm eager to learn. Any resource (document, blogpost, etc.) I should look into?

You can technically use a combination of 7zip (or another zip utility), smali, baksmali, and signapk to do this mod, however this is not the most user friendly way to do it. I would suggest using one of the following:
Here is one way, apktool (Linux, Mac OS, Windows): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195680
The other is Virtuous Ten Studio (Windows Only): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1619473
*EDIT*
It is important to note that since this is not a system apk -- I.E. one that comes with the phone -- you will have to re-sign the apk after adding, removing, or changing any of the files inside. If it were a system apk, you could place the classes.dex file directly into the apk (which is secretly a zip file) without re-signing. (VTS does this for you automatically).
Thanks, I'll check it out.
Ok, decompiled it and found the lines you mentioned in a file called SdCardHandler.smali.
Before I change it I want to understand a little bit what I'm doing.
The method getFatVolumeId() returns the Id of a given Mount Point. It's a native method call which I guess causes the trouble here.
If I change it to a static value, does it do any harm? I mean I have an internal and external SD card. Does MixZing check both?
You should use your own random number instead of BEEF

Just some hex value I can think of? e.g. AEEF, CEEF, ABCD, ...
Couldn't wait, wanted to try anyway
Did the changes, compiled a new apk, signed it, but it doesn't install :crying:
When installing via the phone itself it just tells me that the App hasn't been installed.
When installing via ADB it get an INSTALL_FAILED_SHARED_USER_INCOMPATIBLE error. Need to figure out, how to fix this.

The problem is that on our devices, that native method does not exist, so we just arbitrarily use a value such that it always returns the same value (I.E. always the same card) As for the error, uninstall any applications signed by the same certificate as Mixzing was or sign your modded copy with debug keys, and it should install just fine.
*edit*
Other fun values:
DEAD, F00D, B00B, BABE, C0DE.
Thanks. A little research brought me to the packages.xml file. In there I found the shared user attribute for the MixZing Upgrader App. I was not sure if I want to edit the file. But after your tip I just uninstalled the Upgrader App and I could install the modded version.
Thanks a lot
Meanwhile they have fixed the App in the store.
