Bad headset speaker? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Phone was great the first week or so, but in the last few days the headset speaker on some calls(most actually but not all) sounds muffled and scratchy. Actually sounds like someone is talking into a cup and rubbing the mic at the same time. Anyone else with similar issue?

[Q] Why does sound only come out of one speaker?

It seems as though music and sound only comes out of one speaker on the device.
Whenever I play music, the right speaker (facing the device) seems to be louder. I "scientifically" tested this by covering one side and putting it close to my mouth to make wah-wah noises. The right one is definitely louder.
Is it a defective device? I noticed the tendancy as well with the iPhone 4. I assumed it was because of playing games. My hand would cover one of the speakers. It wouldn't cover the dominant one, though.
So.. What's up with one speaker?
Because there is only one speaker.

ohh haha
Things are beginning to make sense now.
Haha, thank you guys.
I hate how they made it look like a speaker, granted I like my phones somewhat symmetrical. They could of been cool and made the speaker setup stereo instead of monophonic. Or hell even a monophonic setup with two speakers, would make our music much louder.
The bottom and faux metal bezel is a design ripoff of the iphone 4 I believe apple is suing them over it. Its just a cheap speaker our turned down because the iphone has a loud speaker with same design.

I noticed it too but I assumed one was for the mic so thanks for the post cleared things up for me

rear speaker problem

i noticed lately that when i play songs or w/e in the rear speaker while full volume, the quality is just horrible and its very dirty sound.
could it be that the speaker got ruin from a drop? or could it be that its a software problem? or maybe this speaker is just like this while full volume?
thanks for the help.
no one have problem with the phone speaker?
Did you already try this on cm9 with some dsp speaker tweaks?

i yet started to play with rooms root and all those things.
right now im fully stock 2.21 untouched
I had this and found that the holes for the speaker on the bottom cover had been plugged. Cleaned them out and it has the same as factory sound again.
I'm curious what horrible means when talking about a tiny phone speaker. It's not really intended as a home theater system, simply a way to hear the narrow range of the human voice hands free. You probably should be using a dock or headphones.
it could be dirty or that it has gotten some water in it and has a short. i see this on a lot of iphones and samsungs in my line of work

Nexus 5 sound quality

Hey guys this is one thing I'm extremely curious about, anyone able to review how the sound is on this?
Nexus 4 was horrible because of the low volume problem playing through aux cables in the car, my galaxy nexus was way better, just curious to how the sound is on the nexus 5

The actual speaker loudness its self... For me its not very loud!
I have played it though aux in a car and its fine

It seems nice and loud to me. I'm using headphones and Bluetooth with mine though.

Another question for the owners who tried the phone in their cars (AUX) how is the sound quality? since in the N4 the sound quality via the AUX was crap (no other word to describe it) :good:
I thought it was pretty good. Nice quality and loud

Well playing via A2DP is really good. Just like my S3 if not better due to the bitpool being correct.
Playing via headphones also seem to be fine. Not as good as the S3 for me but once a kernel is out with some decent DAC settings i cant really compare.
Yes the speaker quality is CRAP. Not very loud and also tinny. With some sound mods it will be better i can only hope.
Not talking about speakers, about quality through the headphones /aux!

Can somebody else confirm that the speaker is crap? Is it better or worse than the N4? The one thing I miss about the iPhone is the external speaker, in terms of volume. I could, with the 4s, put it in my pocket and hear the music without a problem. That wasn't the case with the N4.

Considering it deals with sound quality, no. If you don't like it then start another thread or quit *****ing.

Seems that the speaker is a turd. HTC One was superior in this sense...even when ringing and getting notifications.
I played through Bluetooth today and it sounds absolutely stunningly perfect.

I affirm it again speaker is crap, probably barely good enough for ringing and calls. Tried to play some dubstep from YouTube and at 50% volume it was far from loud and already starting to saturate. And I'm not a kid that wants to blow is hears off.

I've been trying the speakers out and I gotta say, they're really bad. My dad's super old iphone 4s speaker volume was louder then my n5 speaker when i had it on full blast and he was about 5 feet away. I played youtube music videos on them as well and they sound like ****. Headphones sound fine though.

Phone Quality

Hey I was wondering how the call quality was with the nexus as the ear piece is pretty small. I have a note 3 and while everyone and their mother gave it a great review for phone quality I'm not very impressed. Is the voice quality loud and crisp? Also, when putting casks on speakerphone how is it? I know the speaker hasn't been reported to be great but sometimes voice is a little different.

if your calling T-mobile to T-mobile on both HD Voice capable devices it sounds really nice so far heres the level of ear piece quality based on network mode
GPRS- Crap
EDGE- Decent
HSPA - Excellent
HSPA W/ HD Voice- Amazing
The earpiece is good its just the quality of the audio coming from it depends on the network mode at least for me this is how it is
Can you hear me now? Good.
I have noticed that most speaker grills are much larger than they need to be. The nexus 5 ear piece is about how much is used. Or so I have heard.

i actually prefer those larger grills for the top phone speaker. well not larger, but wider. like the N4 has it.
with the N5 i have found myself having to adjust where the phone is or a part of my ear will cover up the grill and make it difficult to hear. it's probably just my personal use though, like i press the top half of the phone against my ear too hard maybe
Took my first call just a bit ago and can say that I'm very satisfied coming from an s4. Same, if not better volume/quality. Only complaint is how 'sharp' the top edges are too my ear.

Call quality is awesome. I use my phone for work, so good calm quality is a must.

Comming from HTC, call quality on Nexus is worse.
Not bad, but not excellent.
I don't spend much time talking on the phone, but sounds fine to me. Kinda sounds like a phone.

I have difficulty hearing the other side of the line, some times the sound level become so low that I can't hear anything, next minute It has a sharp clear vice, might be the little speaker issues.
OP,
I jumped to N5 from iPhone 5. I see no difference in call quality or earpiece - both sounds fantastic, loud, clear. I had same worries - its so small on N5.
Yeah I figured the small earpiece would be problematic, but it's fine.

I hold my phone away from my face slightly and haven't had issues hearing anyone over 4g.

Speaker question.

Has anyone had issues with the speakers? It seems I only get sound out of one side, don't think this should be normal, but, I might be crazy.
Hi,
There's only one speaker so it's normal...

To expand on that, one side is the speaker and one side is the microphone. They just wanted it to look symmetrical.
